Na wstępie realizatorom filmu podyktował warunki. Nie zgodził się na zasadę policyjną, polegającą na tym, że ktoś delikwentowi zadaje pytania, a ten obowiązkowo musi na nie odpowiedzieć. Nie zgodził się też, by miał to być film biograficzny, albo prezentacja sylwetki twórcy. Gotów był zaakceptować jedynie film o sytuacji, w jakiej się znalazł, z którego, być może, wyniknie kim jest i jak się zachowuje. Oświadczywszy to, Sławomir Mrożek gościnnie otworzył bramę wiodącą do jego meksykańskiego rancha "La Epiffania" i oprowadzając po nim gości, skrupulatnie pokazał wszystko: podkowę wiszącą na drzwiach, wyjątkowej urody sęk, śrubę nie wiadomo do czego i garderobę dla psich smyczy. Wyjechał z kraju 33 lata temu, bo czuł się własnością państwa i - jak mówi - nie wiedział kim jest, a chciał się tego dowiedzieć. Zatrzymał się w Rzymie. Potem znalazł się w Paryżu. Wreszcie, mając blisko 60 lat, wyruszył z Francji za ocean. Osiadł w Meksyku. Kupił rancho. Urządzał je i pielęgnował siedem lat. Teraz zdecydował się zostawić ten dom, ogród, psy i wrócić do Polski. Nigdy nie przypuszczał, że znajdzie się w sytuacji bohaterów "Wiśniowego sadu" Czechowa, lecz oto w niej jest. Siedząc przy pierwszym w życiu prawdziwym biurku, które kupił sobie w ramach stabilizacj, mówi o mało spaktakularnym, w odróżnieniu od innych, procesie twórczym pisarza. Robiąc przerwy na krótkie spacery po kipiącym zielenią ogrodzie, opowiada o swej młodości, początkach kariery, zerwaniu związków z krajem, swej twórczości, emigracyjnych doświadczeniach, sukcesie i meksykańskim domu. Na koniec kamera wyławia go w tłumie na krakowskiej ulicy. Wrócił, lecz już tego nie komentuje. [PAT]

Sławomir Mrożek (29 June 1930 – 15 August 2013) was a Polish dramatist, writer and cartoonist. Mrożek joined the Polish United Workers' Party during the reign of Stalinism in the People's Republic of Poland, and made a living as political journalist. He began writing plays in the late 1950s. His theatrical works belong to the genre of absurdist fiction, intended to shock the audience with non-realistic elements, political and historic references, distortion, and parody (Wikipedia).
The Emigrants, Mrożek's second most-frequently staged play, was written while he was living abroad. It is a study of two different forms of exclusion, juxtaposing idealism with the solid common sense of a political immigrant who left his country for the sake of money. This adaptation was directed by Kazimierz Kutz, an accomplished film and theatre director, screenwriter. It features outstanding performances by Marek Kondrat and Zbigniew Zamachowski (culture.pl)
The translation draws heavily on Henry Beissel's translation in Mrozek Reader (2002). Most differences between the original translation and this one are due to changes to the original text introduced by Kazimierz Kutz's adaptation. It is my first Polish to English literary translation of such size and embarassing errors are to be expected. If you spot any errors, please report them, and I will correct them in the next revision. Sławomir Mrożek (born 29 June 1930) is a Polish dramatist and writer. In 1963 Mrożek emigrated to France and then further to Mexico. In 1996 he returned to Poland and settled in Kraków. In 2008 he moved back to France.
Mrożek joined the Polish United Workers' Party during the reign of Stalinism in the People's Republic of Poland, and made a living as political journalist. He began writing plays in the late 1950s. His theatrical works belong to the genre of absurdist fiction, intended to shock the audience with non-realistic elements, political and historic references, distortion, and parody.
In 1953, during the Stalinist terror in postwar Poland, Mrożek was one of several signatories of an open letter from ZLP to Polish authorities supporting the persecution of Polish religious leaders imprisoned by the Ministry of Public Security. He participated in the defamation of Catholic priests from Kraków, three of whom were condemned to death by the Communist government in February 1953 after being groundlessly accused of treason (see: Stalinist show trial of the Kraków Curia for more details). Their death sentences were not enforced although Father Józef Fudali died in unexplained circumstances while in prison. Mrożek wrote a full-page article for the leading newspaper in support of the verdict, entitled "Zbrodnia główna i inne" (The Major and other Crimes), comparing death-row priests to degenerate SS-men and Ku-Klux-Klan.

Peter Gene Hernandez (born October 8, 1985), better known by his stage name Bruno Mars, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii by a family of musicians, Mars began making music at a young age. He performed in various musical venues in his hometown throughout his childhood. He graduated from high school and then moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a musical career. Mars produced songs for other artists, joining production team The Smeezingtons.
Mars had an unsuccessful stint with Motown Records, but then signed with Atlantic Records in 2009. He became recognized as a solo artist after lending his vocals and co-writing the hooks for the songs "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B, and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy. He also co-wrote the hits "Right Round" by Flo Rida featuring Ke$ha, and "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan. In October 2010, he released his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Anchored by the worldwide number-one singles "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade", the album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. Mars was nominated for seven Grammys at the 53rd Grammy Awards, winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Just the Way You Are".

Sławomir Mrożek (29 June 1930 – 15 August 2013) was a Polish dramatist, writer and cartoonist. Mrożek joined the Polish United Workers' Party during the reign of Stalinism in the People's Republic of Poland, and made a living as political journalist. He began writing plays in the late 1950s. His theatrical works belong to the genre of absurdist fiction, intended to shock the audience with non-realistic elements, political and historic references, distortion, and parody (Wikipedia). The Emigrants, Mrożek's second most-frequently staged play, was written while he was living abroad. It is a study of two different forms of exclusion, juxtaposing idealism with the solid common sense of a political immigrant who left his country for the sake of money. Wreszcie, mając blisko 60 lat, wyruszył z Francji za ocean. Osiadł w Meksyku. Kupił rancho. Urządzał je i pielęgnował siedem lat. Teraz zdecydował się zostawić ten dom, ogród, psy i wrócić do Polski. Nigdy nie przypuszczał, że znajdzie się w sytuacji bohaterów "Wiśniowego sadu" Czechowa, lecz oto w niej jest. Siedząc przy pierwszym w życiu prawdziwym biurku, które kupił sobie w ramach stabilizacj, mówi o mało spaktakularnym, w odróżnieniu od innych, procesie twórczym pisarza. Na wstępie realizatorom filmu podyktował warunki. Nie zgodził się na zasadę policyjną, polegającą na tym, że ktoś delikwentowi zadaje pytania, a ten obowiązkowo musi na nie odpowiedzieć. Nie zgodził się też, by miał to być film biograficzny, albo prezentacja sylwetki twórcy. Gotów był zaakceptować jedynie film o sytuacji, w jakiej się znalazł, z którego, być może, wyniknie kim jest i jak się zachowuje. Oświadczywszy to, Sławomir Mrożek gościnnie otworzył bramę wiodącą do jego meksykańskiego rancha "La Epiffania" i oprowadzając po nim gości, skrupulatnie pokazał wszystko: podkowę wiszącą na drzwiach, wyjątkowej urody sęk, śrubę nie wiadomo do czego i garderobę dla psich smyczy. Wyjechał z kraju 33 lata temu, bo czuł się własnością państwa i - jak mówi - nie wiedział kim jest, a chciał się tego dowiedzieć. Zatrzymał się w Rzymie. Potem znalazł się w Paryżu. Wreszcie, mając blisko 60 lat, wyruszył z Francji za ocean. Osiadł w Meksyku. Kupił rancho. Urządzał je i pielęgnował siedem lat. Teraz zdecydował się zostawić ten dom, ogród, psy i wrócić do Polski. Nigdy nie przypuszczał, że znajdzie się w sytuacji bohaterów "Wiśniowego sadu" Czechowa, lecz oto w niej jest. Siedząc przy pierwszym w życiu prawdziwym biurku, które kupił sobie w ramach stabilizacj, mówi o mało spaktakularnym, w odróżnieniu od innych, procesie twórczym pisarza. Robiąc przerwy na krótkie spacery po kipiącym zielenią ogrodzie, opowiada o swej młodości, początkach kariery, zerwaniu związków z krajem, swej twórczości, emigracyjnych doświadczeniach, sukcesie i meksykańskim domu. Na koniec kamera wyławia go w tłumie na krakowskiej ulicy. Wrócił, lecz już tego nie komentuje. [PAT]

Mrożek joined the Polish United Workers' Party during the reign of Stalinism in the People's Republic of Poland, and made a living as political journalist. He began writing plays in the late 1950s. His theatrical works belong to the genre of absurdist fiction, intended to shock the audience with non-realistic elements, political and historic references, distortion, and parody (Wikipedia).
The Emigrants, Mrożek's second most-frequently staged play, was written while he was living abroad. It is a study of two different forms of exclusion, juxtaposing idealism with the solid common sense of a political immigrant who left his country for the sake of money. STRIP-TEASE premiered at the University of Chicago's Logan Center for the Arts, during its inaugural season. The performance features three singers and The University of Chicago's two Grammy-award-winning ensembles in residence: eighth blackbird and Pacifica String Quartet.
The story is the composer's own adaptation of a play by esteemed Polish dramatist Sławomir Mrożek (b. 1930), whose works written during the early years of post-war communism offer a biting critique of life under an oppressive regime, often disguised in surreal circumstances. In the opera, a pair of office workers find themselves detained, for unknown reasons, in an empty room. - Nie mam wielkich dążeń (jeśli chodzi o $), bo pisze dla ograniczonej grupy czytelników. Nie jestem potęga pisarska jak Françoise Sagan, wiec nie mogę zabiegać o zbyt wiele. Dzisiaj mogę żyć ze swoich dochodów, ale dlatego ze żyję z pieniędzy zarobionych przez ostatnich 30 lat.
- Nie ma pan wrażenia, ze uznanie przyszło trochę późno?
- Oczywiście jest to dla mnie trochę smutne, ponieważ wiek i choroba nie pozwalają mi na korzystanie z tych wszystkich rzeczy. Ale zawsze uważałem, ze sztuka nie może dawać korzyści. To znaczy, artysta drugorzędny, powiedzmy, wirtuoz czy aktor może sobie korzystać: ma brawa, może zarobić fortunę, itd. Ale artysta, który dąży do tworzenia czegoś głębszego czy czegoś bardziej osobistego nie może liczyć na zysk: musi płacić.
Jest sztuka za którą nam się płaci i sztuka za którą płacimy. Płacimy zdrowiem, przyjemnościami, itd... Ja niem wiem, czy jestem ważnym artysta czy nie, ale w tym sensie wiodłem życie ascetyczne.

They respond to events in a very different way, so it was obvious each character should be composed by another composer. In all known operas one composer writes the material for every character, so they have one hallmark. In this chamber opera each of the characters arrives from a different part of the world, from a different culture, and they try to “row in one boat”.
