The Irish Times 2015-03-26Benjamin Scott "Ben" Folds (born September 12, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. From 1995-2000, Folds was the frontman and pianist of the alternative rock band Ben Folds Five. Since the group disbanded, Folds has performed as a solo artist and has toured all over the world. He has also collaborated with musicians such as William Shatner, Regina Spektor and "Weird Al" Yankovic and undertaken experimental songwriting projects with authors such as Nick Hornby and Neil Gaiman. In addition to contributing music to the soundtracks of the animated films Over the Hedge, and Hoodwinked!, Folds produced Amanda Palmer's first solo album and has been a judge on the NBC a cappella singing contest The Sing-Off since 2009.
Folds became interested in piano at age nine. His father, a carpenter, brought one home through a barter trade with a customer who was unable to pay. During this time, Folds listened to songs by Elton John and Billy Joel on AM radio, and learned them by ear.[citation needed] During his years at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Folds played in several bands as the pianist, bassist, or drummer.
Regina Ilyinichna Spektor (Russian: Реги́нa Ильи́нична Спе́ктор, IPA: [rʲɪˈɡʲinə ˈspʲɛktər], English: /rɨˈdʒiːnə ˈspɛktər/; born February 18, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. Her music is associated with the anti-folk scene centered in New York City's East Village.
Spektor was born in Moscow, Soviet Union in 1980 to a musical Russian Jewish family. Her father, Ilya Spektor, is a photographer and amateur violinist. Her mother, Bella Spektor, was a music professor in a Soviet college of music and now teaches at a public elementary school in Mount Vernon, New York. She has a brother Barry (Bear), who was featured in track 7, "* * *", or "Whisper", of her 2004 album, Soviet Kitsch.
She learned how to play piano by practising on a Petrof upright that was given to her mother by her grandfather. She was also exposed to the music of rock and roll bands such as The Beatles, Queen, and The Moody Blues by her father, who obtained such recordings in Eastern Europe and traded cassettes with friends in the Soviet Union. The family left the Soviet Union in 1989, when Regina was nine and a half, during the period of Perestroika, when Soviet citizens were permitted to emigrate. Regina had to leave her piano behind. The seriousness of her piano studies led her parents to consider not leaving the USSR, but they finally decided to emigrate, due to the ethnic and political discrimination that Jews faced. Spektor is fluent in Russian and reads Hebrew, and has since paid tribute to her Russian heritage, quoting the poem February by the Russian poet Boris Pasternak in her song Après Moi, and stating “I’m very connected to the language and the culture.”
Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright (born July 22, 1973) is an American-Canadian singer-songwriter and composer. He has recorded seven albums of original music and numerous tracks on compilations and film soundtracks. He has also written a classical opera and set Shakespeare sonnets to music for a theater piece by Robert Wilson.
Wainwright was born in Rhinebeck, New York, to folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. His parents divorced when he was three, and he lived with his mother in Montreal for most of his youth. Wainwright has dual US and Canadian citizenship. He attended high school at the Millbrook School in New York (which would later inspire his song "Millbrook"), and later briefly studied piano at McGill in Montreal. He began playing the piano at age six, and started touring at 13 with "The McGarrigle Sisters and Family", a folk group featuring Rufus, his sister Martha, his mother Kate, and aunt Anna. His song "I'm a-Runnin'", which he performed in the film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller at the age of 14, earned him a nomination for a 1989 Genie Award for Best Original Song. He was nominated for a 1990 Juno Award for Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year.
I know that you're in there
I can see you
You're saying you're ok
I don't believe you
And now that the gig is off
The spell is broken
The fat lady sung
The president has spoken
These days that you were waiting for
Will come and go
Like any day
Just another day
There's never gonna be a moment of truth for you
While the world is watching
All you need is the thing you forgotten
And that's to learn to live with what you are
So freak out if you wanna
And I'll still be here
Don't call me for years and when you do
Yeah, I'll still be here
I'm not saying the effort is a waste of time - but I
Just love you for the things you couldn't change
Though you've tried
These hours of confusion they will soon expire
Like everything
Does
There's never gonna be a moment of truth for you
While the world is watching
All you need is the thing you've forgotten
And that's to learn to live with what you are
Sometimes
Everything you've ever wanted
Floats above
He's sticking out his tongue and laughing
While everything
Anyone can ever need
Is down below
Waiting for you
To know this
There's never gonna be a moment of truth for you
While the world is watching
All you need is the thing you've forgotten
And that's to learn to live with what you are
You got to learn to live with what you
You got to learn to live with what you
Are
She plays, 'Wipeout' on the drums
The squirrels and the birds come
Gather round and sing the guitar
Oh I, have you got nothing to say?
When all words fail, she speaks
Her mix tape's a masterpiece
Walks through the garden
So the roses can see
Oh I, have you got nothing to say?
And you can see daisies
In her footsteps
Dandelions, butterflies
I wanna be Kate, Kate, Kate, Kate
Everyday she wears the same thing
I think she smokes pot
She's everything I want
She's everything I'm not
Oh I, have you got nothing to say?
She never gets wet
She smiles and it's a rainbow
And she speaks and she breathes
I wanna be Kate, Kate, Kate, Kate
Down by Rosemary and Cameron
She hands out the Bhagavad Gita
I see her around every couple of days
I wanna see her so that I can say, "Hey Kate"
She never gets wet
She smiles and it's a rainbow
You can see, I wanna, wanna
Wanna, wanna be Kate, Kate, Kate
Woke up this morning, what do I see
Three thousand cameras pointed at me
Dude says, "You Levi?"
I'm like, "Yes, that's me sir"
"Well you just knocked up the VP nominee's daughter"
So I tell him "No, you got it wrong mister,
Already got a girl and her name's Bristol"
They all laugh and say "Where you been, sonny?
Your mother in law's a heartbeat from the presidency"
So I say, "Mother in law? No, we aint getting married"
They say, "Soon you will boy, she just announced it"
I get on my dirtbike and ride to my girl's home
Gonna lay down the law
Tell her what's goin' on
I'm a fuckin' redneck, I live to hang out with the boys
Play some hockey, do some fishin' and kill some moose
I like to shoot the shit and do some chillin' I guess
You fuck with me and I'll kick your ass
So we talk and it turns out we don't believe in abortion
And sex outside marriage is against our religion
And when I try to tell them I'm 18 years old,
They say "Levi it's too late, you've got to do as you're told"
I'm a fuckin' redneck, I live to hang out with the boys
Play some hockey, do some fishin' and kill some moose
I like to shoot the shit and do some chillin' I guess
From the back of your big brown eyes
I knew you'd be gone as soon as you could
And I hoped you would
We could see that you weren't yourself
And the lines on your face did tell
It's just as well you'd never be yourself again
Saw you last night, dance by the light of the moon
Stars in your eyes, free from the life that you knew
You're the magic that holds the sky up from the ground
You're the breath that blows these cool winds 'round
Trading places with an angel now
Saw you last night, dance by the light of the moon
Stars in your eyes, free from the life that you knew
Was a time when I had nothing to explain
Oh, this mess I had made
But then things got complicated my innocence has all but faded
Oh, this mess I have made
And I don't believe in God
So I can't be saved
All alone as I've learned to be
In this mess, I have made
All the untested virtue
The things I said I'd never do least of all to you
I know he's kind and true, I know that he is good to you
He'll never care for you more than I do
But I don't believe in love
And I can't be changed
All alone as I've learned to be
In this mess, I have made
The same mistakes over and over again
There are rooms in this house that I don't open any more
Dusty books and pictures on the floor
That she will never see, she'll never see that part of me
I want to be for her what I could never be for you
And I don't believe in God
So I can't be saved
All alone as I've learned to be
I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for the special offer
Guaranteed personality
I wasn't born so much as I fell out
Nobody seemed to notice me
We had a hedge back home in the suburbs
Over which I never could see
I heard the people who lived on the ceiling
Scream and fight, most scarily
Hearing that noise was my first ever feeling
That's how it's been all around me
I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
A guaranteed personality
I'm all tuned in, I see all the programs
I save coupons from packets of tea
I've got my giant hit discotheque album
I empty a bottle, I feel a bit free
The kids in the halls and the pipes in the walls
Make me noises for company
Long distance callers make long distance calls
And the silence makes me lonely
I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for the special offer
A guaranteed personality
And it's not here
It disappeared
I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for the special offer
Guaranteed personality
Goodnight, goodnight sweet baby
The world has more for you than it seems
Goodnight, goodnight
Let the moonlight take the lid off your dreams
We took a small flight in the middle of the night
From one tiny place to another
And my parents they remained at the shack
With Lorraine and my aunt, and my grandpa and brother
We walked past the tarmac and boarded the craft
The rain had me chilled to the bones
Just the three of us took flight that night
Uncle Richard, me and James Earl Jones
And the pilot he gave me a blanket
And the tall dark man
Sang to me in deep rich tones
Goodnight, goodnight sweet baby
The world has more for you than it seems
Goodnight, goodnight
September '75 I was 47 inches high
Mom said by Christmas I would have
A bad ass mother G.I. Joe
For your little minds to blow
I still got beat up after class
Yeah, now, I'm big and important
One angry dwarf and 200 solemn faces are you
If you really want to see me check the papers and the TV
Look who's telling who what to do
Yeah, kiss my ass, goodbye
So give me that bull, you know who I am
I'm your nightmare, little man
Vic, you stole my lunch money, made me cry
Jane, remember second grade?
Said, you couldn't stand my face
Rather than kiss me you said here I die
I'm big and important
One angry dwarf and 200 solemn faces are you
If you really want to see me check the papers and the TV
Look who's telling who what to do
Yeah, kiss my ass goodbye
You'll be sorry one day, yeah, you will, yes, you will
You shouldn't push me around 'cause I will, yes, I will
You will be sorry when I'm big, yes, you will, yes, you will
You will be sorry
'Cause I'm big and important
One angry dwarf and 200 solemn faces are you
If you really want to see me check the papers, check the TV
Oh, no, look who's telling who what to do
I got up and I drove to work
On the wrong side of the road
What the hell would I do
I must admit I didn't know
Andrea came along y'all
To add a couple lines or so
I got one I finished yesterday
And I got three-point-six to go
One down
And three-point-six
Tomorrow
And I'm outta here
One down
And three-point-six
Tomorrow
And I'm out of here
People tell me
Ben, just make up junk
And turn it in
But I never was alright with turning in
A bunch of shit
Don't like wasting time
On music that won't make you proud
But now I've found a reason
To sit right down and shit some out
One down
And three-point-six
Tomorrow
And I'm outta here
One down
And three-point-six
Tomorrow
And I'm out of here
Yeah, yeah
I love you more than
Any man has loved before I
Love you more than
All the stars up in the sky
I think that we should
Settle down and
Live happily forever
After
What do you think of that?
I'm really not complaining
I realize it's just a job
And I hate hearing belly-aching rockstars
Whine and sob
'Cause I could be bussing tables
I could well be pumpin' gas
Yeah, but I get paid much finer
For playin' piano and kissin' ass
And it's one-point-six
Yesterday
And three-point-six
The last
One down
And three-point-six
Tomorrow
And I'm outta here
One down
And three-point-six
Tomorrow
And I'm out of here
One down
And three-point-six
One down
And three-point-six
Tomorrow
All is quiet his tired eyes see figures jotted down
And clothes all strewn around the bedroom floor
Now nothing's adding up and nothing's making sense
She's sleeping like a baby, she doesn't know
He wasn't meant for this
I'm missing the war, I'm missing the war all night
Missing the war, I'm missing the war
He drove home again, pissed and beaten
It's really no big deal, it happens all the time
It's no big deal
I'm missing the war, I'm missing the war all night
Missing the war, I'm missing the war
Till beads of sunlight hit me in the morning
So much time so little to say
Time may fly and dreams may die
The shaking voice that tells him "Go"
Still thinks he might, he knows he won't
I'm missing the war, missing the war all night
Missing the war, I'm missing the war
I should warn you, I go to sleep
I know you don't know what I mean
Yet, I get upset or happy, I go to sleep
You won't know when, I go to sleep
'Cause I'm not tired, I'm not tired
I'm not tired, I'm not tired
I know it seems that I don't care
But something in me does, I swear
I don't remember all last year
I left you awake to cry the tears
While I was dreaming
Oh I'm drowning, save me, wake me up
I should warn you, I go to sleep
Nothing hurts when, I go to sleep
'Cause I'm not tired, I'm not tired
I'm not tired, I'm not tired
I'm not tired, I'm not tired
Bitches ain't shit, bitches ain't shit
Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks
Lick on these nuts and suck the dick
Lets get the fuck out after you're done
And I hops in my ride to make a quick run...
I used to know a bitch named Eric Wright
We used to roll around and fuck the hoes at night
Tighter than a mutharfuckin' gangsta beats
And we was ballin' on the muthafuckin' Compton streets
Peep that shit, got deep and it was on
Number one song after number one song
Long as my muthafuckin' pockets was fat
I didn't give a fuck where the bitch was at
But she was hangin' with a white bitch doin' the shit she do
Suckin' on his dick just to get a buck or two
And the ends that she got meant nothin'
Now she's suing cuz the shit she be doin' ain't shit
Bitches can't hang with the streets
She found herself short
Now she's takin' me to court
That's some real conversation for your ass
I once had a bitch named Mandy May
Used to be up in them guts like everyday
The pussy was the bomb, had a nigga on sprung
I was in love like a muthafucka lickin' the protung
The homies used to tell me that she wasn't no good
But I'm the maniac in black, Mr. Snoop Eastwood
So I figure niggas wouldn't trip with mine
Guess what? Got gaffled by one time
I'm back in the muthafuckin' county jail
Six months on my chest, now it's time to bail
I get's released on a hot sunny day
My nigga D.O.C. and my homey Dr Dre
Scooped in a coupe, Snoop we got the news
Your girl was trickin' while you was draped in your county blues
I ain't been out a second
Now I already gotta do
Some muthafuckin chin checkin
Move up the block as we groove down the block
See my girl's house, Dre, pass the glock
Kick in the door, I look on the floor
It's my little cousin Daz and he's fuckin' my hoe
I uncocked my shit...
I'm heart-broke but I'm still locked
Man, fuck that bitch!
...3,...4,...
Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks
Lick on these nuts and suck the dick
Gets the fuck out after you're done
And I hops in my ride to make a quick run...
I used to know a bitch named Eric Wright
We used to roll around and fuck the hoes at night
Tighter than a mutharfuckin' gangsta beats
And we was ballin' on the muthafuckin' Compton streets
Peep that shit got deep and it was on
Number one song after number one song
Long as my muthafuckin' pockets was fat
I didn't give a fuck where the bitch was at
But she was hangin' with a white bitch doin' the shit she do
Suckin' on his dick just to get a buck or two
And the ends that she got meant nothin'
Now she's suing cuz the shit she be doin' ain't shit
Bitches can't hang with the streets
She found herself short
So now she's takin' me to court
That's some real conversation for your ass
Bitches can't hang with the streets
Bitches can't hang with the streets
Bitches can't hang with the streets
Tourists wear their wallets
In high places when abroad
So as not to be ripped off in ways
To which they're not apprised
Lawyers write some goofy terms
In letters to the future
So as not to get all screwed by methods
Here and after devised, so will I
And I guess I will protect myself from you
Sometimes I get so tickled I can't talk
And I will protect myself from you
I'll keep on reminding me, I'm always free to walk
You're not exactly what I'm looking for
You don't even know that when I've got it straight
Now keep it in mind
No you're not what I was looking for
I just need a little bit of what you've got
A little bit, don't make me laugh
And I guess I will protect myself from you
Sometimes I get so tickled I can't talk
But I will protect myself from you
And I'll keep on reminding me, I'm always free to walk
And always free, free to walk, hey
Whatever happens between you and me today
Probably will be okay
But won't bother me in anyway
And I guess I will protect myself from you
Sometimes I get so tickled I can't talk
But I will protect myself from you
And I'll keep on reminding me, I'm always free to walk
Free, F R E E
You can't, you can't hurt me
'Cause I don't care about you
[Incomprehensible] I don't give a shit
And I don't give a shit about you
The pussy ass sounds of white people
Playing jazz
I thought about sitting on the floor in second grade
I couldn't keep the pace
I thought I was the only one moving in slow motion
While the other kids knew something I did not
But if I acted like a clown
I thought it would get me through, it did
But that don't work no more
You're not a kid no more
I thought I'd do some travelling
Never did
Regrets, regrets
I thought about the hours wasted
Watching TV, drinking beer
I thought about the things I thought about
Until immobilized with fear
And all the great ideas I had
And how we just made fun
Of those who had the guts to try and fail
And then I ended up in jail
Regrets, regrets
But just for a day
Seems the police had made a computer mistake
Said there must be thousands like me with the
Same name
Anyway, I thought about the things I settled for
Or never tried
I never visited my grandma even once
When she was sick before she died
So I don't blame you if you never come to see me
Here again
Regrets, regrets
I see it all, I get it, I promise you I do Your mom walked out on you when you were only two You've grown up believing that this country hates the poor You're a dad three times over and you're only twenty-four
The Christians on the radio, they act like you're scum Self-righteous condescending bastards, each and every one I don't read the Bible but I try to love you, man Every flaw and violent act, I think I understand
But your dogs, your dogs, what's fun about those? And that tat on your neck, and that ring through your nose? The weed, the junk food, the violent pornography Don't you think you'd want to be Just a little bit more like me?
I still have high hopes you could join our community There's more of us than you now, but we'd welcome the diversity You're not white trash, like the other neighbors say If you want to challenge stereotyping, join the PTA
At night, when your pit bulls are scaring our children My wife, I'll be honest here, wants me to shoot them And sometimes I let my fantasies run
But that's only at night, when I'm not really thinking And you're listening to Metallica in your backyard and drinking The rest of the time I think we get along fine I never judge you, I'm a live-and-let-live guy
But your dogs, your dogs, what's fun about those? And that tat on your neck, and that ring through your nose? The weed, the junk food, the violent pornography Don't you think you'd want to be Just a little bit more like me?
I don't need you or your brand new Benz Or your boozy friends. I don't need love, looking like diamonds Looking like diamonds

[Chorus:] I don't need you or your brand new Benz Or your bougie friends And I don't need love, looking like diamonds Looking like diamonds I don't need you or your brand new Benz Or your bougie friends And I don't need love, looking like diamonds Looking like diamonds

I don't mean to critique on your seduction technique But your money's not impressing me, it's kinda weak That you really think you're gonna get my rocks off Get my top and socks off By showing me the dollars in your drop box Me and all my friends we don't buy bottles, we bring em We take the drinks from the tables when you get up and leave em And I don't care if you stare and you call us scummy Cause we ain't after your affection And sure as hell not your money, honey
[Chorus:] I don't need you or your brand new Benz Or your bougie friends And I don't need love, looking like diamonds Looking like diamonds I don't need you or your brand new Benz Or your bougie friends And I don't need love, looking like diamonds Looking like diamonds
Rat tat tat tat on your dum dum drum The beat so phat, gonna make me cum, um, um um, um (Over to your place!) Rat tat tat tat on your dum dum drum. The beat so phat, gonna make me cum, um, um um, um (Over to your place!)
And so
Annie waits, Annie waits, Annie waits
For a call
From a friend
The same
It's the same
Was it always the same?
Annie waits for the last time
The clock never stops, never stops, never waits
She's growing old
It's getting late
And so he forgot, he forgot
Maybe not
Maybe he's been seriously hurt
Would that be worse?
Headlights crest the hill
Shadows pass her by and out of sight
Annie sees her dreams:
Friday bingo, pigeons in the park
Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time
Annie says "You see this is why I'd rather be alone."
And so
Annie waits, Annie waits, Annie waits
For a call
From a friend
The same
It's the same
Was it always the same?
Annie waits as the last...
Headlights crest the hill
Who will be the one for evermore?
(ooh ooh)
Annie, I could be
If we're both still lonely when we're old
Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time
Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time
Annie waits
Fred sits alone at his desk in the dark
There's an awkward young shadow that waits in the hall
He's cleared all his things and he's put them in boxes
Things that remind him: 'Life has been good'
Twenty-five years
He's worked at the paper
A man's here to take him downstairs
And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones
It's time
There was no party, there were no songs
'Cause today's just a day like the day that he started
Noone has left here that knows his first name
And life barrels on like a runaway train
Where the passengers change
They don't change anything
You get off; someone else can get on
And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones
It's time
Streetlight shines through the shades
Casting lines on the floor, and lines on his face
He reflects on the day
Fred gets his paints out and goes to the basement
Projecting some slides onto a plain white
Canvas and traces it
Fills in the spaces
He turns off the slides, and it doesn't look right
Yeah, and all of these bastards
Have taken his place
He's forgotten but not yet gone
And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones
And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones
And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones
I thought I'd write, I thought I'd let you know
In the year since you've been gone I've finally let you go
And I hope you find some time to drop a note
But if you won't
Then you won't
And I will consider you gone
I know that you went straight to someone else
While I worked through all this sh*t here by myself
And I think that you should spend some time alone
But if you won't
Then you won't
And I will consider you gone
I wake up in the night
All alone and it's alright
The chemicals are wearing off
Since you've gone
The days go on, the lights go off and on
And nothing really matters when you're gone
If you think that you feel nothing at all
If you don't (If you don't)
Then you don't (No, you won't)
If you won't
Then you won't
And I will
Then I will
Her window was hung like a painting
She worried it might come to life
She stared for hours
So obsessed was I and self-absorbed that I
Didn't see that she was
Crying
There was always someone carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someone's carrying Cathy
There were times when I'd find myself saying that:
"Friends, you don't understand"
And she's different when it's just me and her, and I
Closed the door and I tried to hang on and she
Sank into the dark
I was over my head
There was always someone carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someone's carrying Cathy
We gave you everything
You could have been anything
We gave you everything
You could have done anything
But to imagine a fall
With no one at all to catch you
There'd always been someone
Then one night she climbed into the picture frame
Out in the frozen air
And out of sight
Woke up sad from this dream I've been having
The last couple nights or so
With her father and brothers we're all at the funeral
Carrying a box through the rain
Then somebody says that it's always been this way
Always someone's carrying
There was always someone carrying
Lucretia walks into a room.
Because she does it's not the same room
The one she wanted to be in
She says, "Everywhere I go, damn! There I am."
And I just want to walk away
Won't you let me walk away sometimes?
Won't you let me walk away?
Every one of you is fired
I'm just an ordinary guy
And all I want is to be loved - is that so wrong?
Don't think that I don't know what you're saying about me
I hear it all through these thin walls
And I just want to walk away
Won't you let me walk away this time?
I just want to walk away
Every one of you is fired
Every one of you is oh oh oh oh
Every one of you is fired, yeah!
(Ooh!)
I just want to walk away
Won't you let me walk away this time?
'Cause I just want to walk away
Every one of you is fired
Every one of you is oh oh oh oh
Every one of you is fired
Every one of you is oh oh oh oh
Fired
Let me tell y'all what it's like
Being male, middle-class and white
It's a b*tch, if you don't believe
Listen up to my new CD
(Sha-mon)
I got sh*t runnin' throught my brain
It's so intense that I can't explain
All alone in my white-boy pain
Shake your booty while the band complains
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Just like Michael Jackson did
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Except that he was talented
I'm rockin' the suburbs
I take the cheques and face the facts
That some producer with computers fixes all my sh*tty tracks
I'm p*ssed off but I'm too polite
When people break in the McDonald's line
Mom and Dad you made me so uptight
I'm gonna cuss on the mic tonight
I don't know how much I can take
Girl, give me something I can break
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Just like Quiet Riot did
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Except that they were talented
I'm rockin' the suburbs
I take the cheques and face the facts
That some producer with computers fixes all my sh*tty tracks
In a haze these days
I pull up to the stop light
I can feel that something's not right
I can feel that someone's blasting me with hate
And bass
Sendin' dirty vibes my way
'Cause my great great great great Grandad
Made someones' great great great great Grandaddies slaves
It wasn't my idea
It wasn't my idea
Never was my idea
I just drove to the store
For some Preparation-H
Y'all don't know what it's like
Being male, middle-class and white
Y'all don't know what it's like
Being male, middle-class and white
Y'all don't know what it's like
Being male, middle-class and white
Y'all don't know what it's like
Being male, middle class and white
It gets me real p*ssed off, it makes me wanna say
It gets me real p*ssed off and it makes me wanna say
It gets me real p*ssed off and it makes me wanna say
F*CK!
Just like Jon Bon Jovi did
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Except that he was talented
I'm rockin' the suburbs
I take the cheques and face the facts
That some producer with computers fixes all my sh*tty tracks
These days
Yeah yeah
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Yeah yeah
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Yeah yeah
You'd better look out, because I'm gonna say 'F*ck'
You'd better look out, because I'm gonna say 'F*ck'
You'd better look out, because I'm gonna say 'F*ck'
Some summers in the evening after six or so
I walk on down the hill
and maybe buy a beer
I think about my friends
sometimes I wish they lived out here
but they wouldn't dig this town
no, they wouldn't dig this town
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
try not to think about it
anymore
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
anymore
no, not anymore, oh
Alice, the world is full of ugly things
that you can't change
pretend it's not that way
it's my idea of faith
you can blow it off
and say there's good in nearly everyone
just give them all a chance
now let's give them all a chance
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
try not to think about it
anymore
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
anymore
no, not anymore, oh
no, it didn't work out
no, it didn't work out the way we thought it would
no, it didn't work out
(an arranged marriage is not so good)
thank God it's you
ya know your timing is impeccable
and I'm not fooling you
I don't know what to do
some dude just knocked me cold
and left me on the sidewalk
took everything I had
and everything I had
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
try not to think about it
anymore
it's getting late where you are,
Alice Childress
anymore
no, not anymore
anymore
no, not anymore
The lights are off again
She took me by surprise
She's so sensitive
This sh*t just happens sometimes
She's my everything
She's my best friend and more
We don't do anything
We didn't do the day
Before you go
You oughta know
That I didn't mean to hurt you, I just wanted you to know
Black tears are falling down her face
And I am wrong
Black tears are falling and she won't say what I've done
She's sitting here beside me, then she is gone
Black tears are falling, falling
Remember long ago
Together laughing, loving
Oh so long ago
When we were buying something
Life was simple then
But she's not happy now, and I
Don't feel anything
Her lips are moving
I am mesmerised
By tiny lies
I'm watching as the shapes are drawing slowly from her eyes
Black tears are falling down her face
And I am wrong
Black tears are falling and she won't say what I've done
She's sitting here beside me, then she is gone
Black tears are falling, falling
Black tears are falling, falling
Losing Lisa
Losing Lisa
Losing Lisa
And there's nothing I can do
Black tears are falling, falling (ooh ooh)
Black tears are falling, falling (ooh ooh)
Black tears are falling, falling (ooh ooh)
You took a trip and climbed a tree
At Robert Sledge's party
And there you stayed 'till morning came
And you were not the same after that
You gave your life to Jesus Christ
And after all your friends went home
You came down, you looked around
And you were not the same after that
(Ahhh ahhh)
You were not the same after that
(Ahhh ahhh)
You were not the same after that
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on...
To it
You took the word and made it heard
And eased the people's pain and for that
You were idolised, immortalised
And you were not the same after that
Walking tall, you'd bought it all
And you were not the same after that
Till someone died on the waterslide
And you were not the same after that
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on to it
(ooh ooh ooh ooh)
(YOU WERE NOT THE SAME!)
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on:
You're hanging on:
Won?t you look up at the skyline
At the mortar block and glass
And check out the reflections in my eyes
You see they always used to be there
Even when this all was grass
And I sang and danced about a high-rise
And you were laughing at my helmet hat
Laughing at my torch
You go ahead, you can laugh all you want
I got my philosophy, keeps my feet on the ground
And I trust it like the ground
And that?s why my philosophy
It keeps me walking when I?m falling down
I see that there is evil
And I know that there is good
And the inbetweens I never understood
Won?t you look at me, I?m crazy?
But I get the job done
Yeah, I?m crazy but I get the job done
And I say, "Go ahead, you can laugh all you want
But I got my philosophy, keeps my feet on the ground
And I trust it like the ground
And that?s why my philosophy
It keeps me walking when I?m falling down"
I pushed you ?cause I loved you guys
I didn?t realize you weren?t having fun
I dragged you up the stairs and I told you to fly
You were flapping your arms, you started to cry
You were too high, oh too high
You may take this all for granted
You take the mortar, block and glass
And you forget the speech that moved the stone
But it?s really not that you can?t see
The forest for the trees
You?ve never been out in the woods alone
So you can laugh all you want to
I got my philosophy
Keeps my feet on the ground
And I love you, you?re my friend
But you got no philosophy
I know you
You think I don't but I do
I've been listening and I don't forget so I can do this
I can pass the test
You went to school in Chicago
Your mom's maiden name is Dupree
Your favorite actor is DeNiro
Your birthday's 03/08/83
C.H.I.C.A.G.O.
D.U.P.R.E.E.
D.E.N.I.R.O.
I know you
You think it's weird but it's not
You're all looking at it all upside down
It actually means I really love you
You used have a dog called Montey
You only drink chardonnay
Your sister's pet name is CeeCee
You have a thing for David Blaine
M.O.N.T.E.Y.
C.H.A.R.D.O.N.N.A.Y.
C.E.E.C.E.E.
And I know you
I know you
You think I'm blind but I'm not
I've been watching and what I've noticed is
distraction, boredom and vacancy
I know your favorite dish
I know your favorite band (Polyphonic S.P.R.E.E.)
You spent a year in Barcelona (B.A.R.C.E.L.O.N.A.)
That asshole's name was Anthony
Turns out you never went to T.U.L.S.A.
To see your old roommate J.A.N.E.
I think my middle name is S.U.C.K.E.R.
And I was born yesterday
I don't know you
I thought I did but I don't
I wasn't listening to the right things
Now the houses are ghosts over Silver Street
And you've got 'em dressed up like clowns
Married couples slamming doors, bums are praising the Lord
And you're playing tapes for the town
Now the neighborhood's mixed and your college friends
Getting younger every year
The wind don't blow and the grass don't grow
You're never leaving Silver Street
You bought some brown wire-frames at a junk shop
That was your trademark at school
Now they're barely hanging on and the styles are moving on
Hard for a man to stay cool
Now the seasons change and the storefronts change
Everything else stays the same
The wind don't blow and the grass don't grow
You're never leaving Silver Street
But, now don't get me wrong 'cause I like this neighborhood
Oh, and seeing you was good
But now we spent the day so completely uninspired
Asking, "Why oh why would I be tired?"
They're filling the potholes in on Silver Street
You're waking the neighbors up at noon
Now you're friends are out on break and
You're out on your brown lawn raking the dirt with a broom
Now the seasons change and the storefronts change
Everything else stays the same
The wind don't blow and the grass don't grow
You're never leaving Silver Street
I said what you wanted to hear
And what I wanted to say, so I will take it back
And all the dishes intact let them be broken
Broken
It's easy to be, easy and free
It doesn't mean anything
You remain selfless, cold and composed
You've done me no favour to call and be nice
Telling me I can take anything
I like, you don't owe me to be so polite
You've done no wrong, you've done no wrong
Get out of my sight
It's easy to be, easy and free
When it doesn't mean anything
To remain selfless, cold and composed
Come on baby, now throw me a right to the chin
Don't you stare like you never cared, I know you did
But you just smiled, like a bank teller
Likely telling me have a nice life
Come on baby, now throw me a right to the chin
Just my sign in and show me that you give me change
But you just smiled, politely in a go we care enough
Said much you are into here and what I admire the same
So I will take it back
It's easy to be, easy and free
When it doesn't mean anything
It doesn't mean anything you can take anything
You can take anything
So selfless, cold
So selfless, cold
So selfless, cold
I've only ever seen her name on the spine but that's enough. I want to make her mine!
Never heard her voice, never seen her smile, but I'm in love with Saskia Hamilton!
Well, shes a poet just like I want to be!
But her passport alone is great poetry, and I'm in love with saskia Hamilton!
Shes got more assonance than she knows what to do with. I am in love with Saskia Hamilton.
She's got two sibilants no bilabial plosivs.
Saskia Hamilton, Saskia Hamilton, yeah! Right!
Saskia Hamilton, Saskia Hamilton!
Saskia Saskia Saskia Saskia!
Already got a girl, but she sounds real bad. I am in love with Saskia Hamilton.
She's got alliterations and her surname's Dag.
Oh! Saskia Hamilton!
No hard consonents in my girl Saskia!
Every single syllable sounds like Shakespeare! And I'm in love with Saskia!
Gonna live with her and it will be harmonious!
How could it not be when she's that euphonious?
I'm gonna marry her and it'll be idyllic!
And my teacher just told me she's dactylic!
Saskia Hamilton, Saskia Hamilton! Yeah! Right!
Saskia Hamilton, Saskia Hamilton!
Saskia Saskia Saskia Saskia!
(Saskia!
Saskia Saskia Saskia Saskia!
If you want to be free
Then I want you to be
You?re not mine anymore
You?re public property
You?re a slave to these people who
Don?t even know you
You think they adore you
They do, then they throw you away
Give the people what they want
You?ve got to give the people what they want
Got to give the people what they want
Rock star
You can shine all alone
But you still need your friends
To remind you, you're nothing
Unless you're plugged in
'Cause baby the truth is
You need their approval
To tell you you're cool
Hey, but look how you pay for it
Give the people what they want
You?ve got to give the people what they want
Got to give the people what they want
Rock star
Rock star
Rock star
Oh, is that what you are?
There must be thousands of you
So you're time is encroached now
You?re image is dumbed down
You?re full of it now
What about when it runs out
Maybe you'll come back
Yeah, maybe I?ll be here
You?re already gone so just go
'Cause they're waiting for you
Yeah, you
You?ve got to give the people what they want
Got to give the people what they
Want
I'm gonna rock this bitch
I tell you what, I'm gonna rock this bitch
I'm gonna rock it like the bitch [Incomprehensible] been rocked before
I tell you what I'm gonna do
No, I'm gonna rock this bitch

And I don't give a shit about you
The pussy ass sounds of white people
Who'd look at that dump and see a home?
Why not move in somewhere easy?
Urinals where bedrooms ought to be
Who could be bothered,really?
You're really good at all that stuff
The nuts and bolts of living
Curtains, blinds and kitchen tables
I've got no time for dates and plans
No I'm too busy dreaming
You're the one with the attention span
You're not the free wheeler
Practical, practical
Amanda
Saved one life
And made two others
Practical Amanda
Who'd look at me
And see someone
That might be
Worth redeeming
Head and heart
And soul fucked up
Who could be bothered, really?
I've got no time for dates and plans
No I'm too busy dreaming
You're the one with the attention span
Practical Amanda
Practical, practical
Amanda
Saved one life
And made two others
They checked into the hospital New Year's Eve
Nothing to be done about that
Rainbows, daffodils; she's not naive
Symbolism's all crap
There's a big picture window in their room
On the ward, with a view of a parliament hill
But the view offers more joy than they can afford
When there's this much pain to kill
You know what hope is?
Hope is a bastard
Hope is a liar
A cheat and a tease
Hope comes near you?
Kick it's backside
Got no place in days like these
At dusk the darkness surrenders to color
As the fireworks streak the sky
And their window gives them the prettiest picture
Their useless luck makes her wanna cry
Then it turns midnight, the shitty old year spent
Another Mom gives her some sparkling wine
And she nearly gives in to the moment
But he'll still be sick in 2009
You know what hope is?
Hope is a bastard
Hope is a liar
A cheat and a tease
Hope comes near you?
Kick it's backside
Got no place in days like these
Just as she's thinking of pulling the blind down
A rocket bursts in front of her eyes
The city lit up like a crown on London
And she tries and fails to stop spirits rise
You know what hope is?
Hope is a bastard
Hope is a liar
A cheat and a tease
Hope comes near you?
Kick it's backside
Got no place in days like these
You know what hope is?
Hope is a bastard
Hope is a liar
A cheat and a tease
Hope comes near you?
Kick it's backside

Destiny was calling
Monday afternoon
Wednesday, you'll be crawling
And you'll pray to be there soon
With sports and wine, yeah, yeah
Sports and wine, no, no
Some men never grew up
Fortunate like you
Some men never found out
What it takes to be a dude
That's sports and wine, yeah, yeah
Sports and wine, no, no, no
The girls don't understand it
What you think is art
My, oh my, we're all impressed
How sensitive you are
Everybody's talking about you now
You know it's true
Because it always has been
Sports and wine for you
So you asked me how I think I know
Just what makes you tick
I don?t know what I know you know
I know you make me sick
Sports and wine, sports and wine
The girls don't understand it
Anything you say
I don't understand it either
Guess that makes me gay
Everybody's talking about you now
Everyone gather 'round now, sing us a song
Just in case by tomorrow it happens he is gone
For two weeks and seven days, our fair foreign friend
I have this feeling we might never see Steven again
But we thought he was gone and now he's come back again
Last week it was funny and now the joke's wearing thin
'Cause everyone knows now
That every night now will be Steven's last night in town
He's charmed everyone here
Except Tamara Easter who later revealed to him her innermost secrets
Won us over with stories about Linda McCartney
Lost points with the ladies for saying he couldn't love a woman with cellulite
But we thought he was gone and now he's come back again
Last week it was funny and now the joke's wearing thin
'Cause everyone knows now
That every night now will be Steven's last night in town
[Incomprehensible]
We were talking 'bout something, seems like was funny
And then Steven got quiet, I think Steven was mad
Maybe he wasn't mad but we felt very strange
In the moment but the moment was passed and forgotten about
We thought he was gone but he's come back again
Last week it was funny and now the joke's wearing thin
'Cause everyone knows now
I know that you're in there
I can see you
You're saying you're ok
I don't believe you
And now that the gig is off
The spell is broken
The fat lady sung
The president has spoken
These days that you were waiting for
Will come and go
Like any day
Just another day
There's never gonna be a moment of truth for you
While the world is watching
All you need is the thing you forgotten
And that's to learn to live with what you are
So freak out if you wanna
And I'll still be here
Don't call me for years and when you do
Yeah, I'll still be here
I'm not saying the effort is a waste of time - but I
Just love you for the things you couldn't change
Though you've tried
These hours of confusion they will soon expire
Like everything
Does
There's never gonna be a moment of truth for you
While the world is watching
All you need is the thing you've forgotten
And that's to learn to live with what you are
Sometimes
Everything you've ever wanted
Floats above
He's sticking out his tongue and laughing
While everything
Anyone can ever need
Is down below
Waiting for you
To know this
There's never gonna be a moment of truth for you
While the world is watching
All you need is the thing you've forgotten
And that's to learn to live with what you are
You got to learn to live with what you
You got to learn to live with what you
Yesterday I got so old I felt like I could die
Yesterday I got so old it made me want to cry
So go on
Just walk away
Go on, go on
Your choice is made
Go on, go on
Disapear
Go on, go on
Away from here
And I know it was wrong
When I said it was true
That it couldn't be me and be her
In between
Without you
Without you
Yesterday I got so scared I shivered like a child
Yesterday away from you, it froze me deep inside
Well
Come back, come back
No other way
Come back, come back
I'm back today
Come back, come back
We'll can't you see
Come back, come back
Come back to me
And I know it wrong
When I said it was true
That it couldn't be me and be her
In between
Without you
Without you
Go on
Go on
Go on
Go on
Without you
Go on
Without you
Uh, okay, we're going to do a new song then
It's about a man named, uh
Morgan Davis, Morgan
Morgan left the house to get some Cream of Wheat
And came back with a little bit more
All right, this features Joe DeLorenza
His wife is tired, she wants to sleep
But all that Morgan Davis wants is Cream of Wheat
He waits and when she turns out the lights
He tip-toes through the darkness
As he slips to the night
This boring life and he leads of buying and selling stocks
Makes him feel he's growing old and tired
There's no joy or strife just by passing time
In this boring life
He wants the lights, the Jaz, a piece of ass
A toothless bitch to blow him for a vile of crack
He cooks his junk in some Gatorade
And scores a bag of chronic on the East MLK
The secret life and he leads it
By selling drugs keeps him up at night
He's selling hash, screwing trailer trash
Hey, he's making cash, it's a whoring life
My friends are all salesman, my wife is a slut
There must be something bigger I can stick in my butt
The IRS is auditing, my life is in a rut
And so he's fired his heat, he's blown his blow
It's coming up on sunrise and it's time to go
He smells like barf, his hair's a mess
He wipes the coke and lipstick off his fat, hairy, chest
He stumbles home from a 'Lesie' show
He will be at work in an hour or so
He crawls in bed with his sleeping wife
Blue jean, baby, L.A. lady
Seamstress for the band
Pretty eyes, pirate smile
You'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her
Dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me
Tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back, she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man, he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums
Oh, how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly, slowly
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
Blue jean, baby, L.A. lady
Seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile
You'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you should have seen her
Dancing in the sand
Now she's in me, always with me
Tiny dancer in my hand
Oh, how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly, slowly
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
And count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
Come on
Your uncle Walter's goin' on and on
'Bout everything he's seen and done
The voice of fifty years experience
He's drunk watchin' the television
You know he's been around the world, last night
He flew to Baghdad in his magical armchair
With cigarettes and a six pack, yeah, he just got back
The spits flyin' everywhere, hey, hey, hey, hey
Your uncle Walter's goin' on and on
(Oh, you're back so late)
Where did you go that you were gone so long?
So, how could you leave me here so long with uncle Walter?
Your uncle Walter saw who fired the shots
He drove his chair in the cavalcade
He's flown from South Africa to countries where
They beat themselves on the backs with chains
There was a fleet of battleships and one reclinin' chair
Headed north on the Arabian sea, now he's back
To tell us what he and his oldest boy Blair
They're gettin' rich with a mail order scheme, oh, oh
Your uncle Walter saw who fired the shots
(We're so glad you're home)
Where did you go that you were gone so long?
How could you leave me here so long with uncle Walter?
Your uncle Walter told me
Everythin' he'd do if he was president
Now, what a perfect world this world would be
If he was president now but he's not
And he sees the children smokin' pot
He knows that in a moment they'll be
Shootin' up heroin, teardrops in his armchair
A fifty minute lecture, tobacco juice rollin' down his chin
Your uncle Walter's goin' on and on
(Oh, you're back so late)
Where did you go that you were gone so long?
So how could you leave me here so long with uncle Walter?
I was never cool in school
I'm sure you don't remember me
And now it's been ten years
I'm still wonderin' who to be
And I love to mix in circles
Cliques and social coteries
(That's me)
Hand me my nose-ring
(Can we be happy?)
Show me the mosh pit
(Can we be happy?)
We can be happy
Underground
Who's got the looks?
Who's got the brains?
Who's got everything?
I've got this pain in my heart
That's all
Hey you
With the long and lonely face
There's gotta be somethin' else
Let me tell you somethin' else
There was a girl who passed me by
She gave a smile but I was shy
I looked down, so down
Don't look there no no
Go go underground
And now there's a place to go
It's the mornin' now
It's the evenin'
It's everythin'
I click my heels and I'm there
(Underground, underground, ooh)
Everything's happy underground
(Underground, underground, ooh)
You been kicked around
Did life bring you down here?
Everything's heavy underground
We'll be decked in all black
Slammin' the pit fantastic
Officer Friendly's little boy's
Got a Mohawk
And he knows just where
We're coming from
It's industrial, work it underground
Get down, get down, get down yeah
(Underground, underground, ooh)
Everything's heavy underground
(Underground, underground, ooh)
You been kicked around
Did life bring you down here?
Everything's heavy underground
We can be happy
We can be happy
We can be happy
Underground
We can
We can
We can be
Everything's heavy
(Underground)
You been kicked around
(Underground)
Did life bring you down, here?
Everything's heavy underground
Bye bye
We can
We can
We can be
(Everything's heavy underground)
We can
We can
We can be
(Everything's happy underground)
We can, we can
We can be
We can, we can
We can be
Everything's heavy underground
Everything's heavy underground

If you wanna write a letter, write a letter
If you'd rather make a phone call, pick up the phone up...
and call me
But if you had to say it all with a pop song,
couldn't you at least have written me a good one?
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you, brainwashed you,
brainwashed you too. (repeat)
Was it just a simple rewind and erase?
Was your mind squeaky clean in the first place?
If you've gotta write an essay, do your research
Stick your nose in a boy and girl fight, hear both sides first
There's something wrong being copied in a memo
in the form of a big ugly demo
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you, brainwashed you,
brainwashed you too (repeat)
Is there a funnel from her mind to your mouth now?
'Cuz you don't edit anything, it just comes out.
I gotta say it's pretty gay trading jabs in pop song
So maybe next time, you should just have a dance off.
A dance off
I think there's something in the Bible about forgiveness and love.
And more importantly about those stones and what your house is
made of.
You might reflect upon your own arrangement.
94 gettin' blown in your basement.
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you, brainwashed you,
brainwashed you too. (repeat)
She's brainwashed you (integrity)
She's brainwashed you (family)
She's b-b-brainwashed you (online rhyming dictionary)
(The answer you seek my son only poses more questions.
Ask many women why relationship has failed.
Each woman offer unique reason for demise.
One woman may say, "man could not commit."
Or, "man is douche, and is now free to make love to himself instead."
Another woman may say, "man had changed,"
or even, "man no longer satisfactory lover."
But my son, ask many men same question all over the world, "why has relationship failed?" Each man, each time, will give same, simple answer.)
The bitch went nuts.
She stabbed my basketball.
And the speakers to my stereo.
She called me 'cunt'
But nothing prepared me for
what I found when I came home.
Oh and I made my own bed. I lie in it.
You lie in yours. You lie, you lie, in yours.
But they want more, they're at my door with torches. Please leave me alone, you know. Just shut it. Just shut it. Just shut it.
The bitch went nuts.
She photoshopped my face
onto every boy who'd done her wrong.
And as she burned I telepathically into the brains of all her embittered rooms.
Oh, now, now they want more. They're at my door with torches. Scores, and scores, and scores to settle with themselves.
You would have thought I'd scorned them all.
They've got a doll of me, they're burnin', they're burnin', they're burnin', they're burnin', they're burnin' their own memories.
Why do they all go?
Why do they all go?
The bitch went nuts, y'all.
But everyone said she might.
Holy f**king shit.
Seriously now.
Now they want more. They're at my door with torches.
Scores and scores.
You would have thought I'd scorned them all.
They've got a doll of me, they're burnin'.

Here in Cologne
I know I said it wrong
I walked you to the train
And back across alone
To my hotel room
And ordered me some food
And now I'm wondering why the floor has suddenly become a moving target
Four, three, two, one,
I'm letting you go
I will let go
If you will let go
(Four, three, two)
Says here an astronaut
Put on a pair of diapers
Drove eighteen hours
To kill her boyfriend
And in my hotel room, I'm wondering
If you read that story too?
And if we both might
Be having the same imaginary conversation
Four, three, two, one,
I'm letting you go
I will let go
If you will let go
(Four, three, two)
(Ohhhhh-aah)
Weightless as I close my eyes
(Ohhhhh-aah)
The ceiling opens in disguise
Such a painful trip
To find out this is it
And when I go to sleep
You'll be waking up
Four, three, two, one,
I'm letting you go
I will let go
Pale, pubescent beasts, roam through the streets
And coffee-shops, their prey gather in herds
Of stiff knee-length skirts, and white ankle-socks
But while they search for a mate, my type hibernate
In bedrooms above, composing their songs of love
Young, uniform minds, in uniform lines
And uniform ties, run round with trousers on fire
And signs of desire, they cannot disguise,
While I try to find words, as light as the birds
That circle above, to put in my songs of love
Fate doesn't hang, on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends, on the tone of your voice
So sing while you have time, let the sun shine down from above
And fill you with songs of love
Fate doesn't hang, on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends, on the tone of your voice
So let's sing while we still can, while the sun hangs high up above
I'm 'trolling food court for girls
Yeah, it's the best job in the world
They know they're safe with me
They love my little mustache
They love a man in uniform
With my sunglass they can't
See what I'm really looking at
And as they're walking by
I whisper through my doughnut
Hey baby, baby light that ass on fire
How long must this day go on?
I got to stand here two more hours till I
Punch the clock
How long must this day go on?
No kid, they don't give me a gun
I don't get paid enough to run
So you can call me what you want
I'll be hanging at the check out
Checking out your girlfriend
Figure out how she's going to fit all of that
Butt into that underwear - yeah
Yeah
Hey girl if you can't recall
Where you parked your daddy's car
Then I could help you out
All alone in this
Great big mall
How long must this day go on?
I got to stand here two more hours
Till it's Miller Time
How long must this day go on?
Whoa oh oh, oh oh
I'm 'trolling food court for girls
I whisper through my doughnut
I whisper through my doughnut
I whisper through my doughnut
Hey baby baby, hey baby baby baby
Light that
Light that ass on fire
Smile
Like you've got nothing to prove
No matter what you might do
There's always someone out there cooler than you
I know that's hard to believe
But there are people you meet
They're into something that is too big to be
Expressed
Through their clothes
And they'll put up with all the poses you throw
And you won't
Even know
That they're not sizing you up
They know your mom fucked you up
Or maybe let you watch too much TV
But they'll still look in your eyes
To find the human inside
You know there's always something in there to see
Beneath
The veneer
Not everybody made the list this year
Have a beer
Make me feel tiny if it makes you feel tall
But there's always someone cooler than you
Yeah, you're the shit
But you won't be it for long
Oh, there's always someone cooler than you
Yeah, there's always someone cooler than you
Now that I've got the disease
In a way I'm relieved
Cause' I don't have to stress about it like you do
I might just get up and dance
Or buy some acid washed pants
If you don't care
Then you got nothing to lose
And I won't
Hesitate
Cause every moment life is slipping away
It's ok
Make me feel tiny if it makes you feel tall
But there's always someone cooler than you
Yeah, you're the shit
But you won't be it for long
Oh, there's always someone cooler than you
Yeah, there's always someone cooler than you
Oh, there's always someone cooler than
Life is wonderful
Life is beautiful
We're all children of
One big universe
So you don't have to be
A chump
And you know
(You know)
That I won't
(I won't)
Hesitate
(Hesitate)
Cause every moment life is slipping away
(Away)
It's ok
(It's ok)
Make me feel tiny if it makes you feel tall
'Cause there's always someone cooler than you
Yeah, you're the shit
But you won't be it for long
But there's always someone cooler than you
Oh yeah, there's always someone cooler than you
Because there's always someone cooler than you
Cooler than you
Cooler than you
Girl
Cooler than you
Cooler than you
My Lady
Nerds gone wild
I must give the impression
That I have the answers for everything
You were so disappointed
To see me unravel so easily
It's only change
It's only everything I know
It's only change, and I'm only changing
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
You want something that's constant
And I only wanted to be me
But watch even the stars above
Things that seem still are still changing
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Because the Origami didn't work We gave you dancing lessons Because the dancing lessons made you bored We bought you a guitar
Because you said it made your fingers sore We found you a pony Because the pony broke your leg and ran away We got you drums
But the drums annoyed our neighbours so We gave you cooking lessons And the cooking lessons made you fat We bought you running shoes
If you hear this please We love you Tommy We know it never was about Origami
Because you took the shoes and ran away We gave them your description Now we haven't heard a thing in weeks
Because we don't know where you are We're putting out this song Because we think that you might hear And know where you belong So what did we do wrong?
If you hear this please we love you Tommy Please come home we've left your room Exactly Exactly
And if you ever hear this song Know we send our love Take your origami skills And make a paper dove Send a message home We promise not to teach you We don't care what you've done We hope that this will reach you..
If you hear this, please We love you Tommy We won't ask you anything We won't be angry

I'll not be screwed, I'll not be screwed like the people leaving early on, I'll be screwed, Ramalama ding-dong Shubop shubop shubop.

I paid my money, And I'm gonna see all the movie, I paid my money, And I'm gonna see all the movie, And it's gonna be good, I'm telling you people it's gonna be real good, 'Cause I paid my money, I paid my money.
I paid, I paid, I paid, Ramalamadinga Shibop shibop shibop. I paid my money. I paid my money. I paid my money. And I saw it all.
Sara spelled without an 'h' was getting bored
On a Peavea amp in 1984
While Zak without a 'c' tried out some new guitars
Playing Sara-with-no-h's favourite song
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
Zak and Sara
Often Sara would have spells where she lost time
She saw the future, she heard voices from inside
The kind of voices she would soon learn to deny
Because at home they got her smacked
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
Zak and Sara
Zak and Sara
Zak called his dad about layaway plans
And Sara told the friendly salesman that:
"You'll all die in your cars,
And why's it gotta be dark?
And you're all working in a submarine"
(Asshole)
She saw the lights, she saw the pale English face
Some strange machines repeating beats and thumping bass
Visions of pills that put you in a loving trance
That make it possible for all white boys to dance
And when Zak finished Sara's song, Sara clapped
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
Zak and Sara
You walked the earth
Talked and never spoke a word
She wonders who'll be the first to go
I said you know,
the biggest things we gotta face alone
Don't wanna waste time and go
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
A trace of me, it floats in my periphery
And every time I turn to see it goes
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Floating by like a satellite
To pass the time, you'll float by again
And I can tell you about the little things
So you don't think about the big things for a while
You walked the earth
Talked and never spoke a word
She wonder who will be the first to go
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Featuring: Regina Spektor
I wanna ask you do you ever sit and wonder?
It's so strange we could be together for
So long and never know never care
What goes on in the other one's head
Things I felt but I never said
You said things that I never said so
I'll say something that I should have said long ago
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You could have just propped me up on the table like a mannequin
Or a cardboard stand up and paint me
Any face that you wanted me to be seen with
Damned by the existential moment where
We saw the couple in the coma
And it was we who were the cliché
But we carried on anyway
So sure I can just close my eyes
Yeah sure, trace and memorize
But can you go back once you know
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me
If I'm the person that you think I am
Clueless chump you seem to think I am
So easily led astray
An errant dog who occasionally escapes
And needs a shorter leash then
Why the fuck would you want me back?
Maybe it's because
You don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me
So what I'm trying to say is
What I'm trying to tell you is
Not gonna come out like I wanna say it
'Cause I know you'll only change it, say it
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
You don't know me, you don't know me at all
Under some dirty words on a dirty wall
Eating takeout by myself
I played the shows
Got back in the van and put the Walkman on
And you were playing
In some other dive a thousand miles away
I played a thousand times before
And like pathetic stars, the truck stops and the rock club walls
I always knew
You saw them too
But you never will again
It's too late
Don't you know
It's been too late
For a long time
Elliott, man, you played a fine guitar
And some dirty basketball
The songs you wrote
Got me through a lot
Just wanna tell you that
But it's too late
It's too late
No, don't you know
it's been too late
for a long time
Oh no
Things were looking up
Least that's what I heard
Oh no
Someone came and washed away your hard-earned
Peace of mind
When desperate static beats the silence up
A quiet truth to calm you down
The songs you wrote
Got me through a lot
Just wanna tell you that
But it's too late
It's too late
No, don't you know
It's been too late
For a long time
It's too late
It's too late
No, don't you know
It's been too late
If there's a God, he is laughing at us
and our football team.
Effington could be a wonderful effing place
I can see it from the highway and I'm wondering
Are they effing in their yards?
Effing in their cars?
Effing in the trailers in the back roads and the parking lots
of Effington? Making my way to Normal, Illinois.
Maybe I should ditch this little white rental on the interstate,
start a new effing life in Effington.
I could change my name, grow a beard, start a family
or I could just keep on moving on, moving on, moving on, moving on....
and not stop 'til I get to Normal.
I want to live in Effington.
I want to die there too.
Please bury me in Effington
in Effington, in Effington, oh
I've got this movie in my mind of Effington
and the soundtrack to it sounds like this (da da da da da da)
I want to live in Effington.
I want to die there too.
Please bury me in Effington
in Effington, in Effington, oh
If there's a God he is laughing at us
and our football team.
And then the people who live in Normal
can buy the movies that I'll make in Effington
that's what Normal people do
Do Normal people do it too?
Normal people do it, people do it, people do it....
I want to live in Effington.
I want to die there too.
Please bury me in Effington
Have you seen that dog? I gotta get him back.
I had him tied to a tree, but he keeps getting out.
He's probably running loose with the bitches.
And when I catch him, I'll give him some stitches.
Oh I love him so much. Oh that stupid bitch is mine.
Errant dog! Errant dog!
They're talking down at the spa, now the word is out.
God damn I look like a jewel when he goes running around.
Gonna take him on Court TV
And show the world what he's done to me.
Oh I'll drag his ass back home, back where his ass belongs.
Errant dog! Errant dog!
He's my everything, he means the world to me.
He's my hopes and dreams, fungible property.
Sometimes I wonder why I put up with his shit.
If I could, I would become a lesbian.
I know I said dead or alive, but really dead is fine.
Just bring him here.
Is this the way to normal?
Is this the way to normal?
Show me the way to normal
Show me the way to normal
Show me the way to normal
Is this the way to normal?
You can blame it on the President
But what if it was you
Who was the White House resident?
Or could you save the starving children?
When there's so much else to do
With all the problems of the world
Coming down on you
So this is the way
This is the way to normal
Show me the way
Show me the way to normal
Alright
You can say my music's bullshit
In your uppity review
But if it was you here at this keyboard
With all the people waiting
To hear your next CD
And throw you in the garbage
Or hail your masterpiece
So show me the way
Show me the way to normal
This is the way
This is the way to normal
Alright
And all these corporations poisoning our air
The children sad and hungry
But they don't even care
Let's get together people
We've got problems here to solve
Let's make this world a better place
Before there is no world at
Is this is the way to normal?
Is this is the way to normal?
Show me the way to normal
Show me the way to normal
Show me the way to normal
She's a million miles away from me
Separated by a hollow wooden door
But some time we can't erase, serves me right
To let her in the first time she knocked
And all this wanderin', got you nothin'
You were ready to but never could
Things you never saw in me, she'll see
Observations that she'd heard from other people
That she never understood, serves her right
Not knowin' just exactly what she wants
And all this wanderin', got me nothin'
You were ready to but never could
Are you happy wanderin'?
Remember sittin' on your car, that night?
Clouds rolled out and vailing
Lights around the bay
And you told me all those things
Remember that you told me
You can't match your clothes?
Remember that, I confessed
How when I laugh sometimes, I'm cryin'
And we sat and didn't talk for half an hour
Remember that, alone 'cause I won't remember anymore
And all this wanderin'
Barren stares as they light up the screen
Bearing teardrops that shatter in slow motion
Novocaine our brains and we're out like lights
And as I'm growing older I'm bored
And I remember when misery thrilled me much more
When I can't relax and I'd like to go back
But that's gone, yeah that's gone
Turn around, turn the volume down
We're counting the days down
'Til the day when we'll live in a video
I'll be stone faced and pale you'll pout in stereo
Twenty four hours every day of the year
Now what fun, I can't wait 'til the future gets here
Closing in on the pain and the torture
He's slamming the door like it's something to strive for
The girl tearing curtains down, looks funny as hell
And of sense of humor can there be any doubt
Yeah well natural selection has weeded it out?
Just to keep me from laughing out loud
But that's gone, we don't think that way no more
That's gone, turn around, turn the volume down
We're counting the days down
'Til the day when we'll live in a video
I'll be stone faced and pale, you'll pout in stereo
Twenty four hours every day of the year
Now what fun, I can't wait 'til the future gets here
Well I've seen some old friends sort of die
Or just turn into whatever must have been inside them
And whatever all of us had then in common grew up and left home
We don't think that way no more
Turn around, turn the volume down
We're counting the days down
'Til the day when we'll live in a video
I'll be stone faced and pale, you'll pout in stereo
Twenty four hours every day of the year
It's just a thought, but where did it come from
What does she do with it if it comes back
A note from his assistant is there by the telephone
She sees it again as she turns out the lights
Kylie is calling from Connecticut
She says you've got the number
It said Kylie is calling from Connecticut
It's there on her mind as she closes her eyes
She believes there are things you should know about
When you've been married for thirty-five years
And her heart belongs to a man that she hadn't seen
Since a magical night when the children were small
Kylie is calling from Connecticut
She says you've got the number
It says Kylie is calling from Connecticut
It's back on her mind as she closes her eyes
Kylie is calling from Connecticut
It's probably nothing, yeah nothing at all
Kylie is calling from Connecticut
It's all coming back as she's reading old letters
That she'd hid in the closet with the pictures she cherished
She kept to herself for a good thirty years
Tread slowly from the car to the spa
Like a weary war-torn refugee
Crossing the border with her starving child
It's a struggle just to get to shiatsu
Present the waitress with your allergy card
and tell all of your problems.
Leave no tip at all
Down at the shoe store with your friends
Speculate who might be fucking a guru.
Rock on, rock on with your fashionable frown
Rock on, rock on. Spread the love around.
Rock on, rock on with a fashionable frown.
Spread the love around.
Hard to remember how we managed before
we could afford real and nervous breakdowns
Or before the anthropology store
was erected on Indian burial grounds
So really don't you see a little of yourself in the bathroom attendant that you just scowled at?
Or the child who's hiding inside as you wipe the smile off a teenage barista.
Rock on, rock on with my fashionable frown.
Rock on, rock on. Spread the love around.
Rock on, rock on with a fashionable frown.
Spread the love around.
Spread the love around.
Alright.
You're gonna be alright, baby.
You're gonna be alright, baby.
Floating back from the spa to the car.
State of bliss, and it wasn't the steam room.
Sometimes life's not so bad.
Now we know who's been fucking the guru.
Rock on, rock on with a fashionable frown.
Rock on, rock on. Spread the love around.
Rock on, rock on with your fashionable frown.
Spread the love around.
Smile for us now.
Do it upside down.
Called in sick one day
Stepped out my front door.
Squinted up at the sky
and strapped on my backpack.
Got into a van
and when I returned I had
ex-wives and children,
boxes of photographs
And they gave me some food
and they didn't charge me
and they gave me some coffee
but they didn't charge me
and when I was broke I needed it more.
But now that I'm rich, they give me coffee.
Eating an ice cream cone
texting with my thumbs
flippin' off the asshole
who pulled into my lane
life could be longer than it's often cracked up to be
We all get new cells every seven years.
I feel seven a day.
It's a good day to die again
Now they save me my place
Over there in the corner
And I never get tickets
Yeah, I only get warnings.
But when I was broke I needed it more
And now that I'm rich,
Oh-oh, Oh!
It was the start of the show
Hiroshima
and the people were shouting my name
as the house lights came down
and the spotlight followed me out
I waved down low to the crowd
as I busted ass on the front of the stage
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
Maybe it was the course of adrenaline
as the concrete rose to meet my face
Maybe it was the sheer embarrassment
that kept me concious and standing as I
crawled back on the stage
and started pounding out the first song
There was blood on the keyboard...
..Oh my God.
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
You wanna see what's in my head?
You wanna see what's in my head?
You wanna see what's in my head?
Check it out 'cause;
I got pictures of what's in my head
I got pictures of what's in my head
They took of me in Tokyo
And I brought 'em back with me to the USA
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
Alright, fall!
I'm not so bad I just hate to see a good time had By everyone but me On this lonely Christmas Eve I hear them up and down And up and down the street
They're making noise Noise, noise, noise How I hate their happy noise There's only one thing I hate more, come to think of it And that's the people who keep Makin' it
Feast, feast, feast, feast They'll have more than anyone could ever eat Me, I'm stuck here with my Cream of Wheat There's no one here to feast with me On this lonely Christmas Eve
Don't they know I'm up here all alone In my cave up in the hills? How I wish that this would go away This dreadful holiday That they call Christmas Day Oh...
When they're done with all their Christmas noise And they've had their Christmas feast Just when I think that I might finally Get a moment's peace They start to...
Oh, sing, sing, sing, sing Now I'll never get no sleep I'm screamin' out the window, but it don't do no good They sing and sing and sing all through the neighborhood
Sing, sing, sing They take their little break, then they do it all again
It's a lonely Christmas Eve
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail
A smile from a veil
Do you think you can tell
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts
Hot ashes for trees
Hot air for a cool breeze
Cold comfort for change
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found the same old fears.
Wish you were here
Do you not hear me anymore?
I know it's not your thing to care
I know it's cool to be so bored
It sucks me in when you're aloof
It sucks me in, it sucks, it works
I guess it's cool to be alone
Will you never rest?
Fighting the battle of who could care less
Every day you wake up late
Sometimes I wish I was that way
You think Rockford Files is cool
But there are some things
That you would change if it were up to you
So think about your masterpiece
Watch the Rockford Files and
Call to see if Paul can score some weed
Do you never rest?
Fighting the battle of who could care less
Unearned unhappiness
That's alright, I guess
I've got this great idea
Why don't we pitch it to the Franklin fucking Mint?
Fine pewter portraits of General Apathy and Major Boredom
Singing whatever and ever Amen
Oh well, maybe not, I'll try again
This should cheer you up for sure
See I've got your old I.D.
And you're all dressed up like the Cure
You never rest
Fighting the battle of who could care less
Unearned unhappiness
Well, she crept back in the house at half past three
Shook her head to see him snoring in his sleep
"If you really loved me", she said
"I wouldn't have to be so mean"
He's a heap of junk that pours from his top drawer
He sometimes likes to spread it out around the floor
It's evidence of what he was like
He likes to remember when
Sha la la, sha la la lo li
The end is growing near
We're treading water now
And holding back our tears
And the day is rising
We're sinking sha la la lo li
In a minute it will all be coming down
And they know it now but no one makes a sound
Such a shame to ruin this bright
Lazy sunny day
Sha la la, sha la la lo li
The end is growing near
We're treading water now
And holding back our tears
And the day is rising
We're sinking sha la la lo li
My my, the cruelest lies are often told without a word
My my, the kindest truths are often spoken, never heard
She said, "You've been pushing me like I was a sore tooth
You can't respect me 'cause I've done so much for you"
He said, "Well, I hate that it's come to this but baby, I was doing fine
How do you think that I survived the other 25 before you?"
Sha la la, sha la la lo li
The end is growing near
We're treading water now
And holding back our tears
And the day is rising
Could you get me some more, um, thumb, uh, finger, uh, tapes
[audience:] Band-Aids!
Band-aids! Thank you. I am losing... the... use... of...
[audience:] "Rock This Bitch"!
Thanks.
I've done, we've done
I personally, probably, have done
Maybe fifty different styles of "Rock This Bitch"
There's no more styles left
[audience member:] Don't do it! Make a new one right now!
I, I
[audience member:] Rock out with your cock out
I have sang this song so many times
In different styles
I think I will stop tonight
I'm not going to do this anymore
I am not going to play "Rock This Bitch"
No I'm not
No I'm not
No I'm not gonna rock the fucker rock, a-rock, rock rock-rock-rock
Rock this motherfuckin' bitch
I'm gonna rock out
I'm gonna rock out with
I'm gonna rock out
Rock out
Rock out
Rock out with this motherfucking
Cock out
Rock out with the cock out, yeah yeah
Rock out with the cock out
Rock out with the cock out, ba-baby
Rock out with the cock out
Rock out with the cock out
Rock out with the cock out
Rock out with the cock out
Rock out with the cock out
Baby baby ba-babay
Kick out some of that Weather Channel shit!
[plays jazzy piano solo]
He's not gonna rock out with his cock out really
But he might rock out without his socks on
He might rock it
Rock it
Rock it
Rock it
Rock it with this motherfuckin' blue shirt on
How distinctive is that?
He's not gonna rock out with his cock out, baby baby
You wait in the car on the side of the road
Let me go and stand a while
I wanna know you're there
But I wanna be alone
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna feel the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind
I walked out in a field, the grass was high
It brushed against my legs
I just stood and looked out at the open space
And a farmhouse out a ways
And I wondered about the people who lived in it
And I wondered if they were happy and content
Were there children and a man and a wife?
Did she love him and take her hair down at night?
If I stray away too far from you
Don't go and try to find me
It doesn't mean that I don't love you
It don't mean I won't come back and stay beside you
It only means I need a little time
To follow that unbroken line
To a place where the wild things grow
To a place where I always used to go
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Ran out of time
Running my mouth
Ran up a tab and
all the way from Kalamazoo
On my way back home
I was surely stoned
Now I'm sober in my yard
Can't believe I was there
Can't believe I've been anywhere else
If there was a time
I almost forgot
We had me drifting all the way from
Kalamazoo
and I said I love you too
All the way back home
There's an old joke
I just made up
How many of me would it take
to screw up your life?
One to settle down,
One to turn you 'round
Now I'm sober in my yard
I was gonna say you have to be there
but I forget that you're still there
Seems like you'd be frozen
Frozen there in time
Waving your goodbyes
Up to the sky
Place on the map
Is fading away
I must have been lost in more than one way
Kalamazoo
Don't you know that I've been there too?
And it'd put your mind more at ease
If you'd say these words and release
I'm getting down to the last pair of shoes
Can't even win the nickel bet
Because them that's got
Are them that gets and
I ain't seen nothing yet
I see folks with fine cars and fancy clothes
That's why they're called the smarter set
Because they manage to get
What them that's got supposed to get
And I ain't seen nothin' yet
Them that gots is
Them that gets
Is something I can't see
You got to get something
'Fore you can get something
How you get the first
Is still a mystery to me
I see folks with fine car and fancy clothes
That's why they're called the smarter set
Because they manage to get
What them that's got supposed to get
And I ain't seen nothin' yet
I ain't seen nothing yet
Awww!
Mommy!
She touched me mommy!
Awww!
Mommy!
He touched me first!

You make me mad!
You're bad!

You go to your room!
You make me Mommy!
You go to your room!
You make me Mommy!

You make me Mommy!
You go to your room!
You make me Mommy!
You make me Mommy!
You make me make you!

Kill me Mommy!
You go to your room!
Kill me Mommy!
You go to your room!
Kill me Mommy!
You go to your room!
Kill me Mommy!
You go to your room!
Kill me Mommy!
I'm not Mommy!
Kill me Mommy!
I'm Daddy!
Dr. Yang, help me mend this broken heart
You got to help me, doc, I don't know where to start
When she walked right out that door
And left me crying on the floor
She says she's only going to the store
Dr. Yang, what's the lovesick diagnosis?
'Cause she says she cannot cope with my neurosis
You would think I had chronic halitosis
Dr. Yang
Dr. Yang, now her voicemail box is full
If she won't call me I'm feeling like a fool
The last time I saw her in her car
I threw her shit out in the yard
Locked her out and headed to the bar
Dr. Yang, what's the lovesick diagnosis?
Cause she says she cannot cope with my neurosis
I could always hurt myself, doctor, she knows this
Dr. Yang
Dr. Yang
All the king's horses
And all the king's men
Couldn't get back my girlfriend
Dr. Yang, if you can't fix my heart in the end
Actually there is something you could do instead
Call my girlfriend from your number
Explain that you're a doctor
Tell her that I love her so
She hurt me more than she could know
And even with all your degrees
There's nothing you can do for me
Then she won't have to block my number any more
Dr. Yang, da da da da da
Dr. Yang, da da da da da
Dr. Yang, da da da da da
Dr. Yang, gonna kill myself tonight
Tell her that
I can do this, really, I'm good enough
I'm as good as them, but don't take it from me
Ask my friends, ask my sister
They all think my stuff is great
Up there with any of them
I just need a break
I'm a genius, really, I'm excellent
Better than them, I kick their asses
All of them, even that guy
Who thinks he's fuckin' cool
Gets all of the attention
He doesn't sell shit does he
Some guy on the net thinks I suck and he should know
He's got his own blog
I'm a loser
I'm a poser
Yeah really
It's over
I mean it and I quit
Everything I write is shit
Hey, hey
It's a working day
Hey, hey
Take a walk
out the gate you go and never stop
past all the stores and wig shops
quarter in a cup for every block
and watch the buildings grow
smaller as you go
Down the tracks
beautiful McMansions on a hill
that overlook a highway
with riverboat casinos and you still
have yet to see a soul
Jesusland
Jesusland
Town to town
broadcast to each house, they drop your name
but no one knows your face
Billboards quoting things you'd never say
you hang your head and pray
for Jesusland
Jesusland
Miles and miles
and the sun goin' down
Pulses glow
from their homes
You're not alone
Lights come on
as you lay your weary head on their lawn
Parking lots
cracked and growing grass you see it all
from offices to farms
crosses flying high above the malls
A longer walk
through Jesusland
I feel like a quote out of context withholding the rest
So I can be for you what you want to see
I got the gestures and sounds, got the timing down
It's uncanny, yeah, you'd think it was me
Do you think I should take a class
To lose my Southern accent?
Did I make me up or make the face 'til it stuck?
I do the best imitation of myself
The problem with you speech you gave me was fine
I liked the theories about my little stage
And I swore I was listening but I started drifting
Around the part about me acting my age
And now if it's all the same
I've people to entertain
You know I juggle one handed, do some magic tricks and
The best imitation of myself
Maybe I'm thinking myself in a hole
Wondering who I am when I ought to know
Straighten up now, time to go
Fool somebody else, fool somebody else
Last night I was east with them and west within
Trying to be for you what you want to see
But I can't help it with you the good and bad comes through
Hanging out with no one but me
If it's all the same it comes from the same place
And if my mind's somewhere else
You won't be able to tell
I do the best imitation of myself
Yes it's uncanny to see
You'd really think it was me
The best imitation of myself
Leaf by leaf and page by page
Throw this book away
All the sadness, all the rage
Throw this book away
Rip out the binding and tear the glue
And all of the grief we never even knew
We had it all along, now, it's smoke
The things we've written in it
Never really happened
All the things we've written in it
Never really happened
And all of the people come and gone
Never really lived all the people come have gone
No one to forgive, smoke
We will not write a new one
There will not be a new one
Another one, another one
Here's and evening dark with shame
Throw it on the fire
Here's the time I took the blame
Throw it on the fire
Here is the time that we didn't speak
It seemed for years and years
And here's a secret no one will ever know
The reasons for the tears they are smoke, smoke, smoke
We will not write a new one
There will not be a new one
Another one, another one
Where do all the secrets live?
They travel in the air
You can smell them when they burn
They travel
Those who say the past is not dead
Can stop and smell the smoke
You keep saying the past is not dead
Well, stop and smell the smoke
You keep on saying the past
Is not even past
And you keep saying
Well I thought about the army
Dad said, "Son you're fucking high"
And I thought, yeah there's a first for everything
So I took my old man's advice
Three sad semesters
It was only fifteen grand spent in bed
I thought about the army
I dropped out and joined a band instead
Grew a moustache and a mullet
Got a job at Chic-fil-a
Citing artistic differences
The band broke up in May
And in June reformed without me
And they'd got a different name
I nuked another grandma's apple pie
And hung my head in shame
I know, I've been thinking a lot today
I've been thinking a lot today
Oh, I think I'll write a screenplay
Oh, I think I'll take it to L. A.
Oh, I think I'll get it done yesterday
In this time of introspection
On the eve of my election
I say to my reflection
"God, please spare me more rejection"
'Cause my peers, they criticize me
And my ex-wives all despise me
Try to put it all behind me
But my redneck past is nipping at my heels
I've been thinking a lot today
I've been thinking a lot today
I've been thinking a lot today
Saw a silhouette across a fluorescent
Floating overhead, undoing his helmet
Through the murky beams and blue-green sea life
I saw him spinnin' towards the moonlight
I pull him in, he wasn't breathin'
His eyes were wide and I saw two of me there
There's an ugly buzz that hovers just above the quiet
Found a way to make it silent
I'm comin' up for air
I'm comin' up for air
They hold my hand and ask me to pull through
A voice I know says, "Dear, he probably can't hear you"
Comin' up for air
Comin' up for air
So you wanted to take a break
Slow it down some and have some space
Fuck you too
Give me my money back
Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back
And don't forget
And don't forget
To give me back my black T-shirt
I wish I hadn't bought you dinner
Right before you dumped me
On your front porch
Give me my money back
Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back
And don't forget
And don't forget
To give me back my black T-shirt
So you wanted to take a break
Slow it down some and have some space
Give me my money back
Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back
I want my money back
You wait in the car on the side of the road
Let me go and stand a while
I wanna know you're there
But I wanna be alone
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna feel the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind
I walked out in a field, the grass was high
It brushed against my legs
I just stood and looked out at the open space
And a farmhouse out a ways
And I wondered about the people who lived in it
And I wondered if they were happy and content
Were there children and a man and a wife?
Did she love him and take her hair down at night?
If I stray away too far from you
Don't go and try to find me
It doesn't mean that I don't love you
It don't mean I won't come back and stay beside you
It only means I need a little time
To follow that unbroken line
To a place where the wild things grow
To a place where I always used to go
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind
Good morning, son.
I am a bird
Wearing a brown polyester shirt
You want a coke?
Maybe some fries?
The roast beef combo's only $9.95
It's okay, you don't have to pay
I've got all the change
Everybody knows
It hurts to grow up
And everybody does
It's so weird to be back here
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We're still fighting it, we're still fighting it
And you're so much like me
I'm sorry
Good morning, son
In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things
Everybody knows
It sucks to grow up
And everybody does
It's so weird to be back here.
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We're still fighting it, we're still fighting it
You'll try and try and one day you'll fly
Away from me
Good morning, son
I am a bird
It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things
Everybody knows
Tt hurts to grow up
And everybody does
It's so weird to be back here.
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We're still fighting it, we're still fighting it
Oh, we're still fighting it, we're still fighting it
And you're so much like me
You can't fool me, I saw you when you came out
You got your momma's taste but you got my mouth
And you will always have a part of me
Nobody else is ever going to see
Gracie girl
With your cards to your chest walking on your toes
What you got in the box only Gracie knows
And I would never try to make you be
Anything you didn't really want to be
Gracie girl
Life flies by in seconds
You're not a baby Gracie, you're my friend
You'll be a lady soon but until then
You gotta do what I say
You nodded off in my arms watching TV
I won't move you an inch even thought my arm's asleep
One day you're gonna want to go
I hope we taught you everything you need to know
Gracie girl
And there will always be a part of me
Nobody else is ever gonna see but you and me
My little girl
Judy
Could anyone be loved anymore
than I love you
does it hurt you too?
But Judy
I've been feeling small too long
I love you so
but something's wrong
and I come running when you want me here
and when you want me to, I disappear
Give Judy my notice
I knew if I made it easy for you
you'd settle for me, yeah eventually
but Judy
I won't be your bitch anymore
and follow you 'round
and hold the door
and I can't do this any longer
the vacuum left is so much stronger
Give Judy my notice
Give Judy my notice
Judy you know I'm not mad anymore
at least most of the time
but that could take a while
I've been living just to see you smile
every once in a while
Tears fall
but that don't mean nothing at all
It's just cause I said it first
yeah, that's why it hurts
And I'm not sorry if you're not sorry
And you're not sorry until I make you
Give Judy my notice
Give Judy my notice
Give Judy my notice
Give Judy my notice
The old bastard left his ties and his suit
A brown box, mothballs and bowling shoes
and his opinion so you'd never have to choose
Pretty soon, you'll be an old bastard too
You get smaller while the world gets big
The more you know you know you don't know shit
The whiz man'll never fit you like the whiz kid did
So why you gotta act like you know when you don't know?
It's okay if you don't know everything
Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know?
It's okay if you don't know everything
Close your eyes close your ears young man
You've seen and heard all an old man can
Spread the facts on the floor like a fan
throw away the ones that make you feel bad
Kids today gettin' old too fast
they can't wait to grow up so they can get some ass
They get nostalgic about the last ten years
before the last ten years have passed
why you gotta act like you know when you don't know?
It's okay if you don't know everything
Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know?
It's okay if you don't know everything
Tears land on a hand on the chest
The old bastard had a paradigm arrest
You got smaller and the world got big
The more you knew we knew we didn't know shit
The whiz man never fit him the whiz kid did
Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know?
cause It's okay if you don't know everything
Why you gotta act like you know when you don't know?
Ran out of time, running my mouth Ran up a tab and all the way back to Kalamazoo All the way back home I was surely stoned, now I'm sober in my yard Can you believe I was there Can you believe I've been anywhere else
There was a time, almost forgot, we had been drifting all the way to Kalamazoo And I said that I loved you too All the way back home There's a little joke, I just made up How many of me would it take to screw up your life One to settle down, one to turn you around Now I'm sober in my yard I would say you had to be there, now I regret that you're still there
Seems like you've been frozen, frozen there in time Waving your goodbyes Up to the sky
You place on the, has faded away Used to be lost in more than one way Kalamazoo, don't you know that I've been there too And it'd put your mind more at ease If you'd say those words of release All the way back home doobie pants
Man in a wheelchair in the lobby of the Forrest With frighters, hustlers, hard-up millionaires
Mobsters, cops, whores, pimps and Marxists All human life is there
Man in a wheelchair listens to the chatter Writes down all the insane crap he hears
He can't move around but it doesn't really matter In the Forrest all you need is eyes and ears
And out they pour, the hits and misses Turn Me Loose, Lonely Avenue And down in Nashville Elvis sings Suspicion Pomus/Shuman, 1962
And he never could be one of those happy cripples The kind that smile and tell you life's OK
He was mad as hell, frightened and bitter He found a way to make his feelings pay
Back at the Forrest, in the steakhouse off the lobby Another diner gets three bullets in the head
Doc looks down and carries on eating his linguine Tries to think up a lyric for the dead
Fred Neil, Jack Benny, and crazy Phil Spector Pumpkin Juice and Eydie Gormé Damon Runyon Jr. and the Duke's orchestra All superhuman life was there
And he never could be one of those happy cripples The kind that smile and tell you life's OK He was mad as hell, frightened and bitter He found a way to make his isolation pay
Everything is changing You're looking for the cure And you feel like you're the loneliest girl in the world Trouble in your head now Don't know what to do Seems like up is down and red is blue
Red is blue Red is blue
Remember when we started Days when all was fun All that we could make when life was young Now you're getting older Nothing feels the same You can't even make sense of your own name
Because red is blue (Doesn't make much sense) But red is blue (Messing with your head now) Red is blue
Oohh Oohh
We'd hit the bottom,
I thought it was my fault
And in a way I guess it was
I'm just now finding out
What it was all about
Moved to the west coast away from everyone
She never told me that you called
Back when I was still, I was still in love
Till I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's bye-bye, goodbye, I tried
And I twisted it wrong just to make it right
Had to leave myself behind
I've been flying high all night
So come pick me up...I've landed
The daily dramas she made from nothing
So nothing ever made them right
She liked to push me and talk me back down
Until I believed I was the crazy one,
and in a way
I guess I was...
But I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's bye-bye, goodbye I tried
Treading a sea of a troubled mind
Had to leave myself behind
Singing bye-bye, goodbye I tried
If you wrote me off I'd understand it
Because I've been on some other planet
So come pick me up...
I've landed
And you will be so
happy to know
I've come alone,
it's over
But I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's by my goodbye I tried
Down comes the reign of the telephone czar
It's OK to call
Now I'll answer for myself
Come pick me up,
I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate that God himself did make us into corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces from the clay
And true, it may seem like a stretch but its thoughts like this that catch my troubled head when you're away when I am missing you to death
When you are out there on the road for several weeks of shows and when you scan the radio I hope this song will guide you home
They will see us waving from such great heights, "Come down now", they'll say But everything looks perfect from far away, "Come down now", but we'll stay...
I tried my best to leave this all on your machine but the persistent beat it sounded thin upon listening
And that shit just will not fly you will hear the shrillest highs and lowest lows with the windows down when this is guiding you home
They will see us waving from such great heights, "Come down now", they'll say But everything looks perfect from far away "Come down now", but we'll stay...
[Musical break]
They will see us waving from such great heights, "Come down now", they'll say But everything looks perfect from far away "Come down now", but we'll stay...
They will see us waving from such great heights, "Come down now" They will see us waving from such great heights, "Come down now"
Dr.Yang, Help me mend my broken heart
Gotta help me doc, I don't know where to start.
When she walked right out that door
Left me cryin on the floor
She said she's only going to the store
Dr.Yang, What's the lovesick diagnosis?
Cause she said she cannot cope with my neurosis
You would think I had chronic halitosis
Dr.Yang
Dr.Yang, now her voicemail box is full
and she won't call me, I'm feeling like a fool
The last time I saw her in her car
I threw her shit out in the yard,
Locked her out and headed to the bar
Dr.Yang, What's the lovesick diagnosis?
Cause she said she cannot cope with my neurosis
I could always hurt myself, doctor she knows this
Dr.Yang
All the kings horses and all the kings men
Couldn't get back my girlfriend
Dr. Yang, if you can't fix my heart and head (heart and head)
Actually there is something you can do instead (do instead)
Call my girlfriend from your number
Explain that you're a doctor
Tell her that I love her so
She hurt me more than she could know
And even with all your degrees
There's nothing you can do for me
She won't have to block my number any more
Dr. Yang
(da da da daaa da)
Dr. Yang
(da da da daaa da)
Dr. Yang
Gonna kill myself tonight
Tell her that, Dr. Yang

I don't get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns
The stumbles and falls brought me here
And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know that I am
I am, I am the luckiest
What if I'd been born fifty years before you
In a house on the street where you live?
Maybe I'd be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?
And in a wide sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know that I am
I am, I am the luckiest
I love you more than I have
Ever found a way to say to you
Next door, there's an old man who lived to his 90's
And one day, passed away in his sleep
And his wife, she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away
I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way
To tell you that I know we belong
That I know that I am
Pangs of silence
From the room upstairs
How's the view there?
Do you read what they're saying about you?
That you're no fun
Since the war was won
In fact, you have become all of the things you've always run away from
The ascent of Stan

All the time we had?
Being poor was not such a drag in hindsight
And you wonder why your father was so resigned
Now you don't wonder any more

Doctor, my eyes have seen the years
And the slow parade of fears without crying
Now I want to understand
I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good without hiding
You must help me if you can
Doctor, my eyes, tell me what is wrong
Was I unwise to leave them open for so long
'Cause I have wandered through this world
And each moment has unfurled
I've been waiting to awaken from these dreams
'Cause people go just where they will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems
Doctor, my eyes, tell me what you see
I hear their cries, just say if it's too late for me
Doctor, my eyes, tell me what you see
I hear their cries, just say if it's too late for me
Doctor, my eyes, I cannot see the sky
Sometimes I get the feeling
That I won't be on this planet for very long
I really like it here, I'm quite attached to it
I hope I'm wrong
All I really wanna say
You're the reason I wanna stay
I loved you before I met you
And I met you just in time 'cause there was nothing left
I sat here on my suitcase
In our empty new apartment until the sun went down
Then I walked back down the stairs
With all my bags and drove away, you must be freaking out
All I know is I've gotta be
Where my heart says I oughta be
It often makes no sense
In fact I never understand these things I feel
Don't change your plans for me
I won't move to L.A.
The leaves are falling back east
That's where I'm gonna stay
You have made me smile again
In fact I might be sore from it, it's been a while
I know we've been together many times before
I'll see you on the other side
But don't change your plans for me
I won't move to L.A.
The leaves are falling back east
That's where I'm gonna stay
All I really wanna say
You're the reason I wanna stay
But destiny is calling and won't hold
And when my time is up I'm outta here
All I know is I've gotta be
Where my heart says I oughta be
It often makes no sense
In fact I never understand these things I feel
I love you, goodbye
I wish it was last September
When we could lose ourselves in crowds every day
'Cause Emaline, she don't walk in time
She's not the same, that's all you can say
But when I've heard enough
I tell myself
That we've learned our lesson, but I
Don't wanna walk away from Emaline
They're talking now
Does she know what they're saying?
She's got the air to float above and
I'm sinking into summer champagne
She's dear to me and so expensive
Now I'm not talking 'bout money
When money talks I hate to listen
But lately it's been screaming in my ear
And when I've heard enough
I tell myself
That we've learned our lesson, but I
Don't wanna walk away from Emaline
It only took me one look
To understand Emaline
Sometimes I don't
Know what she's saying
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't know
What she's saying, but I know, I know
I know what she wants to believe
I wish it was last September
Don't let me walk away from Emaline, for stupid reasons
Now I'm talking 'bout money
When money talks I hate to listen
But lately it's been screaming in my ear
Oh what advice? Girls need attention
Well are you different than all mine?
For all it's worth she's got attention
From people like you who see black and white
I've heard enough
I'll tell you what
Really shouldn't sit here and whine
What I've kept with me and what I've thrown away
Know where the hell I've ended up on this glary random day
Where the things I really cared about, just left along the way
For being to pent up and proud
Woke up way too late feeling hung over and old
And the sun was shining bright, I walked barefoot down the road
Started thinking about my old man, it seems that all men
Wanna get into a car and go anywhere
Here I stand, sad and free
And I can't cry, I can't see
What I've done?
No, God, what have I done?
Don't you know I'm numb, man? No I can't feel a thing at all
'Cause it's all smiles and business these days and I'm indifferent to the loss
And I've faith that there is a soul somewhere that's leading me around
I wonder if she knows which way is down
Here I stand, sad and free
And I can't cry and I can't see
What I've done?
No, God, what have I done?
And I poured my heart out
And I poured my heart out
It evaporated, see
Blind man on a canyon's edge of a panoramic scene
Or maybe I'm a kite that's flying high and random dangling a string
Or slumped over in a vacant room, head on a stranger's knee
I'm sure back home they think I've lost my mind
Here I stand, sad and free
I can't cry and I can't see
What I've done?
If you wanna write a letter, write a letter
If you'd rather make a phone call, pick the phone up and call me
But if you had to say it all with a pop song
Couldn't you atleast have bring me a good one?
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you
Brainwashed you, brainwashed you too
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you
Brainwashed you, brainwashed you too
Was it just a simple rewind and erase?
Was your mind squeaky clean in the first place?
If you got to write an essay do your research
If you got to stick your nose in a boy and girl fight hear both sides first
There's something wrong being copied on a memo
In a form of a bad country demo
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you
Brainwashed you, brainwashed you too
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you
Brainwashed you, brainwashed you too
Is there a funnel from her mind to your mouth now?
'Cause you don't edit anything, it just comes out
I gotta say it's pretty gay trading jabs with pop songs
So maybe next time we should just have a dance off
A dance off
Isn't there something in the bible about forgiveness and love?
And more importantly about throwing stones
And what your house is made of
You might reflect upon your own arrangement
Ninety four, get it blown in your basement
While your wife slept
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you
Brainwashed you, brainwashed you too
She's brainwashed you, brainwashed you
Brainwashed you, brainwashed you too
She's brainwashed you, integrity
She's brainwashed you, family
6 a.m. day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold, car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping, I am numb
An' up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte
They're not home to find us out
And we drive
Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
They call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
Then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Than she ever has before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
As weeks went by it showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time to tell the truth
And she broke down and I broke down
'Cause I was tired of lying
Driving back to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
And she's alone and I'm alone
And now I know it
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
Fred Jones was worn out
From caring for his often
Screaming and crying wife
During the day
But he couldn't sleep at night
For fear that she in a stupor from the drugs
That didn't ease the pain
So she stands and waits and waits at the school gate
They're late, they come, so dumb
In two cars when they agreed one
And it's gone wrong on her birthday
So they go to Joe's for pizza and ice cream
They sit and stare and Claire just wants to be 9 and a half
Next year she'll tell them she only wants world peace
But Claire, Claire baby
I wish you knew how this all got twisted
I wish you could see right inside us
In all of this stuff, the best of us that we can't get out
What's the point of this
What's wrong with two birthdays
It's cool at school
Her friends, they all have two birthdays
Oh geez, he just asked the waitress out on a date on her birthday
But Claire, Claire baby
I wish you knew how this all got twisted
I wish you could see right inside us
In all of this stuff, the best of us that we can't get to
Here's the cheque
They pay with two cards like they've never met
Goodbyes outside; it's cold in LA
Claire, Claire baby
I wish you knew how this all got twisted
I wish you could see right inside us
The best of us for most of us
Or what we were, you're all that's left
Ho, ho, ho, play it grandpa
Yeah, play it, let's tell them a little story
About what happened this Christmas
Yeah, tell them, tell 'em 'bout Christmas
Christmas eve, I didn't get much sleep
I kept hearing things, heavy breathing from the chimney
Who could it be?
I'll tell you what it was
What happened then, Ben? Yeah, what happened?
Well, I went back to sleep
You went back to sleep? Back to sleep?
Shit tired man, went back to sleep
And in the morning, I couldn't believe my eyes
A whale of a corpe with a long white beard
Was dangling over the fire
Oh, Santa he's a big fat fuck
Went down the chimney got his fat ass stuck
Oh, honey, call the lawyers fast
'Cause Mrs. Clause is gonna sue my ass
Hey, hey, hey
Okay grandpa, step up
Sing in this thing right here
Tell 'em what you saw
Tell 'em what you saw grandpa
I gotta tell you folks
He wasn't wearin' no clothes
He musta rubbed a whole gallon of Crisco oil
From his back down to his toes
While I was talking to the cops outside
The dog was lickin' Crisco off of his thighs
They hauled him away in a double wide
What a sad, sad way to die
Hey, hey, hey
Santa, he's a big, fat fuck
Went down the chimney, got his fat ass
Oh, honey call the lawyers fast
Howard, the strangest things have happened lately
When I take a good swing at all my dreams, they pivot
And slip, I drop my fists and they're back laughing
Howard, my intention's become not to lose
What I've won, ambition has given way
To desperation and I lost the fight for my eyes
Boxing's been good to me, Howard
Now I'm told, "You're growing old"
The whole time he knew, a couple of years
I'd be through, has boxing been good to you?
Howard, now I confess, I'm scared and lonely and tired
They seem to think I'm made of clay, another day
I'm not cut out for this, I just know what to say, I say
Boxing's been good to me, Howard
Now I'm told, "You're growing old"
The whole time he knew, a couple of years
I'd be through, has boxing been good to you?
Well, sometimes I punch myself hard as I can
Yelling, "Nobody cares", hoping some one
Will tell me how wrong I am, Howard
Boxing's been good to me, Howard
Now I'm told, "You're growing old"
The whole time he knew, a couple of years
I'd be through, has boxing been good?

Oh no
Your love just leaves you bruised
If you want to know
You find something to lose
The world won't turn until something breaks
Who will make the first last mistake
You say good things come to those who
Wait
Into the spiral
Your world and my world
It's never final
Love just leaves you bruised
I went because you said you'd be there
A box of candy
Smoke in your hair
And I didn't know
I didn't care
But now I know
Ba ba ba ba baaaaaa
Ba ba ba ba baaaaaa
Ba ba ba ba baaaaaa
Ba ba ba ba
Love just leaves you bruised
Oh no
Did love just leave you screwed
You got to go slow
Cause love just leaves you bruised
Into the spiral
Your world and my world
It's never final
Love just leaves you bruised
I went because you said you'd be there
A box of candy
Smoke in your hair
When I didn't know
I didn't care
But now I know
Ba ba ba ba baaaaaa
Ba ba ba ba baaaaaa
Now I know
Ba ba ba ba baaaaaa
Ba ba ba ba
Love just leaves you bruised
And i've
Got the scars to prove it
I went because you said you were there
A box of candy
Smoke in your hair
Explain it to me
Again and again
Like I care
Ba ba ba ba baaaaa
Ba ba ba ba baaaaa
Like I care
Ba ba ba ba baaaaa
Ba ba ba ba baaaaa
Love just leaves you yeah
The world won't turn until something breaks
Who will make the first last mistake
Good things come to those who wait
Well I can't wait
I went because you said you'd be there
A box of candy
Smoke in your hair
I didn't know
I didn't care
Now I know
Ba ba ba ba baaaaaa
(extened version
Thats alright
How did that sound?)
Well my dog wears a path on the same line
And lately i'm thinking i might take his advice
Yeah yeah
Cause he sees through the fence and he thinks i'm free
Well, my brain and his chain look the same to me
All alone with a cage and a headrest
There's a thing I could get off of my chest
Cause I
Want to wear the path that's true
And I
Want to wear the path with you
Out on the cold off the leash four years or more
I don't even know what it was I was waiting for
Well maybe I barked up the wrong tree
That was then, now i'm back
Won't you see me?
Cause I
Want to wear the path that's true
And I
Want to wear the path with you
Oh it's true
I used to be afraid of growing old
And hanging around the same old place
But I got older anyway
So won't you
So won't you
So won't you brush my fears away
My dog wears a path and that's a good sign
Cause my dog wears a path on the same line
(same line)
All alone in this cage with a headrest
There's a thing I should get off my off chest
(I could get off of my chest)
Buy a house, go to work in the same car
Feed the dog, put our teeth in the same jar
Want to tell you that I
Want to wear the path that's true
And I
Want to wear the path with you
And I
Want to wear the path that's true
(you there?)
(yeah)
(what'cha doing?)
(you didn't even say hello)
(hello)
(haha, that's not normal way to answer your phone)
(well there's a lot of ways to answer the phone)
(you could say Gruss G--)
(you just picked it up and didn't say anything, "are you there?"
(i'm sorry)
(what are you doing?")
(making a record)
(you're a qumkwat)
(we were doing a vocal track, you are all over it now)
You are drunk and surly
In Latino lover mode
We all know what's on your agenda
You've broken the code
Oh, I've got no right to lay claim to her frame
She's not my possession
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Octoped, you've got six hands too many
And you can't keep them to yourself
You're too fat and too old to marry
So they left you on the shelf
Oh, I've got no right to lay claim to her frame
But you soiled my obsession
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Get your hands off my woman motherfucker
Get your hands
Get your hands
Get your hands
Get your hands
Motherfucker
Get your hands
Get your hands
Get your hands
Get your hands
It's funny I know
But I'm disappointed in you
I thought you could read my mind
But I came home early
And saw that a drawer'd been opened
Looks like you've been reading my diary instead
How does it feel to realize
You're all alone behind your eyes?
It seems to me if you can't trust
You can't be trusted
Caught in a dream
Picking up astral signals
Some of them psychic, you better watch what you think
Happens to be that everybody else's dreams are Freudian clues
You better watch what you dream
You wanna see the other side
What's going on behind the eyes
Still it seems if you can't trust
You can't be trusted
Didn't you know we're as close as we can be?
The sun's coming up
She's pulled all the blankets over
Curled in a ball
Like she's hiding from me and
That's when I know
She's gonna be pissed when she wakes up
For terrible things I did to her in her dreams
You wanna see the other side
What's going on behind the eyes
Still it seems if you can't trust
You can't be trusted
Didn't you know we're as close as we can be?
By the time the buzz was wearing off
we were standing out on the sidewalk
with our tattoos that looked like rings
in the hot Nevada sun
Kids piled high, our moms and dads shook hands
in a party of Polaroid friends
rented a pool and hired a band
Maybe they knew more then we knew
cause they danced and drank
while we jumped off the deep end
Oh I've got you to thank
for this
Christmas came around
yeah and everything was going to crap
and our moms and dads not a clue to be had
Yeah we put on a pretty good act
and they seemed to all need to believe it
so we danced and smiled and paddled hard beneath it
Oh I've got you to thank
for this
You can't say you've never had a doubt
and smoked it down but really wanted out
By the time the buzz was wearing off
we were standing out on the sidewalk
with our tattoos that looked like rings
in the hot Nevada sun
and they won't fade
Adelaide
On a plane
Far from the united states
Of LA
Dropping in from outer space
Takes a day
Now I see the Bogans
At the motor race
Here you know the world could turn
Or crash and burn
And you would never know it
Going where the air is clear
There's better beer in Adelaide
Charlie L. Smith's forty
Someone spiked my rice
The rest, history
Now I am a fixture down
Rundle Mall
Watching as the locals pass
Silver balls
I can see their eyes are round
They're pointed down
They scan the spanning sidewalks
Learning that there is no hurry
Fuss or worry
Adelaide
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
It's raining
In Adelaide
A face is waiting in a window
A voice says
Why Adelaide
You could live anywhere and I say
Because I want to
Because I want to
I really really want to
And you know the earth could turn
Or crash and burn
And you would never know it
Really got to make it to the finish line
Get the record done on time
Pack the bags
And catch a flight
And you can kiss my ass goodbye
I'm in Adelaide
Adelaide
Adelaide
Son, look at all the people in this restaurant
What do you think they weigh?
And out the window to the parking lot
At their SUV's taking all the space
They give no fuck
They talk as loud as they want
They give no fuck
Just as long as there's enough for them
Gonna get on the microphone down at Wal-Mart
Talk about some shit that's been on my mind
Talk of the state of this great nation of ours
People look to your left
Yeah, look to your right
They give no fuck
They buy as much as they want
They give no fuck
Just as long as there's enough for them
Son, look at the people lining up for plastic
Wouldn't you like to see them in the National Geographic?
Squatting bare assed in the dirt eating rice from a bowl
With a towel on their head, and maybe a bone in their nose
See that asshole with the peace sign on his license plate?
Giving me the finger and running me out of his lane
God made us number one because he loves us the best
Well he should go bless someone else for a while
Give us a rest
(They give no)
Yeah, and everyone can see
(They give no)
There's a moment in my mind
I scribbled and erased a thousand times
Like a letter never written or sent
These conversations with the dead
I used to be a sentimental guy
Now I'm haunted by the left unsaid
I never thought so much could change
Little things you said or did
are part of me, come out from time to time
Probably no one I know now would notice
But I never thought so much could change
You drifted far away
Far away it seems
Time has stopped, the clock keeps going
People talkin' and I'm watching
As flashes of their faces go black and white
And fade to yellow in a box in an attic
But I never thought so much
Could change, now I don't miss anyone
I don't miss anything
Think of me
Anyway you want
I can be
The problem if that's easier
In your head
Move the pieces around
Things I've said
Turn the memory upside down
And it makes it better I know
But sometimes it's hard to swallow
In time I will fade away
In time I won't hear what you say
In time, but time takes time you know
Tell your friends
The things they wanna hear and see
Start the drums
Band against the enemy
And in time I will fade away
In time I won't care what you say
In time, but time takes time you know
In your head
Move the pieces round
Things I've said
Turn the memory upside down
It might make it better, I know
But sometimes it's hard to swallow
In time I will fade away
In time I won't care what you say
In time, but time takes time you know
They even looked at each other once across a crowded bar
He was with Martha, she was with Tom
Neither of them really knew what was going on
Strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronized
and staying that way forever
Most of the time it was just near misses
Air kisses, once at a bookstore, once at a party
She came in as he was leaving
And years ago at the movies, she sat behind him
A 6:30 showing of 'While You Were Sleeping'
He never once looked around
[Chorus:]
It's so easy from above
You can really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there's nothing to be done for them
It doesn't work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk past them every day, oh no
And it's not like they were ever actually unhappy in the lives they lived
He married Martha, she married Tom
Just this vague notion that something was wrong
A naked absence, a phantom limb
An itch that could never be scratched
[Chorus]
Neither of them knew what was going on
A strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronized
And staying that way forever
Who knows whether that's how it should be
Maybe our ghosts live in that vacancy
Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Maybe we owe the unlucky ones
[Chorus]
Maybe that's how books get written
Maybe that's why songs get sung
Well, he shouted out his last word
And he stumbled through the yard
And she shattered her last China plate
And spun off in the car
When he lunched onto the hood
She stopped to tell him she'd been wrong
He was thrown head over heels
Into the traffic coming on but then
All is fair
All is fair in love
Did you get my other letters?
Sometimes I think I oughta call
'Cause you know I often
Wonder if you open them at all
Every couple nights or so
You know you pop into my dreams
I just can't get rid of you like you got rid of me
Ohh, but I send my best
'Cause God knows you've seen my worst
Well, all is fair
All is fair in love
All this breathing in, never breathing out
All this breathing in, never breathing out
All this breathing in, never breathing out
Well, I guess she made her way
Through the mob too late to hear him say
That he'd gotten all he wanted
A crowd to watch him bear the pain
He'd been keeping in, so what
All is fair
All is fair in love
Yeah, well all is fair
All is fair in love
Am I right? Am I right?
Not only am I right
I'm lonely and I'm right
Yeah, yeah
Girl, it's been a long time
Since we had it going on that way
Feelin's getting stronger each and every day
Wake up, oh yeah, I can feel you
But you're not there, holdin' on to thin air
'Cause you're dreamin' of somebody else
We're sexed-up, tongues curled
We used to have it goin' on, girl
Washed our worries from this hard world
Now you're dreaming of somebody else
Girl, it's been a long time
Since we had it going on that way
Feelin's getting stronger each and every day
Girl, it's been a long time
Since we had it going on that way
Feelin's getting stronger each and every day
And if you call me back, girl
I'll be there, I'll be there
Yeah, I will be your man
I'll be there, I'll be there
Well, you may lie your ass off [unverified]
You weren't there, you weren't there, girl
You say, "The longer we go
The more your friends freak out"
Well you oughta know
I wouldn't stand between you
But by deafness screams sometimes
My heart has gravity sickness
I just don't know, is it me, or is it you?
What are you trying to do?
Girl, it's been a long time
Since we had it going on that way
Feelin's getting stronger each and every day
Girl, it's been a long time
Since we had it going on that way
Tread slowly from the car to the spa
Like a weary war-torn refugee
Crossing the border with her starving child
It's a struggle just to get to shiatsu
Present the waitress with your allergy card
and tell all of your problems.
Leave no tip at all
Down at the shoe store with your friends
Speculate who might be f**king a guru.
Now we know who's been f**king the guru.
Rock on, rock on with a fashionable frown.
Rock on, rock on. Spread the love around.
Rock on, rock on with your fashionable frown.
Spread the love around.
Smile for us now.
My Name is Hiro I am 51
Since 1980 life has been no fun
And I don't want to die
I left my family for the secretary
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Her name is Yuko she is 22
She and my daughter were best friends in High School
They say I'm crazy and it's temporary
But I refuse to rot like my contemporaries
I wanna explode
In a Karaoke Supernova
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode
In a Karaoke Supernova, yeah
Last night she dressed me up in hip hop pants
The phat g-stylin rides below your ass
She wants to show me to her mom and dad
I told her I would not be down with that
cuz lately I can feel the years between us
I hope to God my friends at work don't see us
Tonight she asked me if I've ever seen Jesus
Cuz she had backstage passes for three of us
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode, oh oh
In a Karaoke Supernova, yeah
So now she's gone and broke my heart godd*mn her
Turns out she's been f*cking this drum programmer
She likes his style, she likes his rock start glamour
Well she's an infant! he can d*mn well have her!
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode
I don't wanna grow old
Won't you let me, Won't you let me explode
Once there was a way
To get back homeward
Once there was a way
To get back home
Sleep, pretty darling
Do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Golden slumbers
Fill your eyes
Smiles awake you
When you rise
Sleep, pretty darling
Do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Once there was a way
To get back homeward
Once there was a way
To get back home
Sleep, pretty darling
Do not cry
Stop the bus, I wanna be lonely
When seconds pass slowly and years go flying by
You gotta stop the bus and get off here
That's enough and I'm leaving this factory
And all she wants is food on the table
And I won't be able to bring it home
And all I want, come on
'Cause all I need , yeah is free, 'cause I'm a factory
Did mother nature tell you
"Boy, you come and go as you please"
That's what she said to me
But big brother got the keys and I got Jackson Cannery
Millionaires and mill rats live side by side here
Messed up my brother's mind, who's far from Earth
And tell me what's he worth?
The same as you, the same as me in this factory
Did mother nature tell you
"Boy you come and go as you please"?
That's what she said to me
But big brother got the keys and I got Jackson Cannery
It's 4 in the morning mother don't know
That I'm going far away
She's whispering to the moon
I hope you don't, join you soon
Baby boss, climbs up on his soapbox
Great Caesar's ghost
Knows what's best for me
Stop the bus
Did mother nature tell you
"Boy you come and go as you please"?
That's what she said to me
But big brother got the keys and I got Jackson Cannery
Big brother got the keys and I got Jackson Cannery
Oh-oh, Oh!
It was the start of the show
Hiroshima
and the people were shouting my name
as the house lights came down
and the spotlight followed me out
I waved down low to the crowd
as I busted ass on the front of the stage
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
Maybe it was the course of adrenaline
as the concrete rose to meet my face
Maybe it was the sheer embarrassment
that kept me concious and standing as I
crawled back on the stage
and started pounding out the first song
There was blood on the keyboard...
..Oh my God.
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
You wanna see what's in my head?
You wanna see what's in my head?
You wanna see what's in my head?
Check it out 'cause;
I got pictures of what's in my head
I got pictures of what's in my head
They took of me in Tokyo
And I brought 'em back with me to the USA
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
Oh-oh Oh!
They're watching me, watching me fall
I met this girl, she looked like Axl Rose
Got drunk and took her home and we slept in our clothes
And in the morning, put my feet on the floor and thought
"Being awake never felt like this before"
And Julianne, you know she wouldn't approve
Talked all day on the phone 'cause I had nothing to do
Got rid of Axl by the afternoon
Being awake never felt so clear and blue
That's all I knew
Guess that I was innocent too
I sing a song yeah, and it won't be the blues
'Cause I don't miss Julianne
My friend, she told me she felt sorry for me
She said the truth would come crashing down on me
That I'd feel sorry but the truth of it is
That I feel guilty for not giving a shit
That's all I knew
Guess that I was innocent too
I'll sing a song, yeah, and it won't be the blues
'Cause I don't miss Julianne
I got a bag of trash, I got my bag of trash
I drag it up and down, I drag it up and down the road
How could she miss a man
Who drags a bag of trash down the road?
This week, I feel like I been born again
You know that Julianne, she would have a fit
She'd find a reason for the things that I did
And gave me credit for the things that I've never been
That's all I knew
Guess that I was innocent too
I can try just as hard as I can
But I don't miss Julianne
That's all I knew
Guess that I was innocent too
I can try just as hard as I can
Jane be Jane
Better that way, not when you're trying
Imitating something you think you saw
So Jane be Jane
And if sometimes that might drive them away
Let them stay there, you don't need them anyway
You're worried there might not be
Anything at all inside but that you're worried
I should tell you that's not right
Don't try to see yourself
The way that others do
It's no use
You're worried there might not be
Anything at all inside but that you're worried
I should tell you that's not right
You've had it harder
Than anyone could know
So hard to let it go
But it's your life and you can decorate it
As you like, beneath the paint and armor
In your eyes the truth still shines
Jane be Jane
What would it take to make me happy today
A baby with a bagel or a hat that looks like hair
What could I see to make the sun come out for me
A dog that has to wear the leash before he can pee
(unfinished demo)
You walked the earth
Talked and never spoke a word
She wonders who'll be the first to go
I said you know,
the biggest things we gotta face alone
Don't wanna waste time and go
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
A trace of me, it floats in my periphery
And every time I turn to see it goes
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Floating by like a satellite
To pass the time, you'll float by again
And I can tell you about the little things
So you don't think about the big things for a while
You walked the earth
Talked and never spoke a word
She wonder who will be the first to go
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
Alone again
Alone
I must give the impression
That I have the answers for everything
You were so disappointed
To see me unravel so easily
But it's only change
Only everything I know
And even things that seem still
Are still changing
Mother misses her baby
But I only wanted to be me
She changed address and haircuts
And boyfriends and light bulbs, it's easy
But it's only change
Only everything I know
Even things that seem still
Are still changing
I stay focused on details
It keeps me from feeling the big things
But watch the microscope long enough
Things that seem still are still changing
Even the things that seem still are still changing
Even the things that seem still are still
Even the things that seem still are still changing
well, how come you say you will when you won't?
you tell me you do, Baby, when you don't
let me know, Honey, how you feel
tell the truth now, is love real?
oh, Honey don't
Honey don't
Honey don't
Honey don't
Honey don't
say you will when you won't,
oh, Honey don't
well, I love you, Baby, and you ought to know
I like the way that you wear your clothes
everything about you is so doggone sweet
you got that sand all over your feet
oh, Honey don't
no, Honey don't
Honey don't
Honey don't
Honey don't
say you will when you won't
oh, Honey don't, don't, don't
well, sometimes I love you on a Saturday night
early morning you don't look right
you've been out, Baby, painting the town
no Baby, been slippin' around
oh, Honey don't
Honey don't
please, Honey don't
Honey don't
Honey don't
say you will when you won't
oh, Honey don't
I love you!
say you will when you won't,
Bless my soul what's wrong with me
I'm itchin' like a man that's on a fuzzy tree
My friends say I'm acting as wild as a bug
I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm all shook up
Ah, ah, ah
All shook up most of the time
Well my knees are shakin'
And my hands are gettin' weak
Can't seem to stand on my own two feet
Who do you blame when you, oh, when you found such luck
I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love
I'm all shook up any old way
Yea please don't ask me what's up on my mind
I'm a little mixed up but I'm feelin' fine
But that's alright
Oh, when I meet a girl that I've love best
My heart beats so and it scares me to death
But that's alright
She touched my lips what a thrill I got
My heart beats like a volcano when it's red hot
I'm proud to say that she's my, oh, what a buttercup
I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love
I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love
I'm all shook up any old time
Ah, yeah
That's alright, listen
That's ok too
I'm in the mood for love, woman
I'm in the mood for love
My knees are shakin' and my elbows quakin'
I can't seem to stand on my own two feet
All shook up, oh yeah
Please don't ask me what's up on my mind
I'm a little mixed up but I'm feeling fine
I'm in the mood for love, woman, yeah
In the mood for love
Come on babe
Some summers in the evening after six or so
I walk on down the hill
and maybe buy a beer
I think about my friends
sometimes I wish they lived out here
but they wouldn't dig this town
no, they wouldn't dig this town
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
try not to think about it
anymore
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
anymore
no, not anymore, oh
Alice, the world is full of ugly things
that you can't change
pretend it's not that way
it's my idea of faith
you can blow it off
and say there's good in nearly everyone
just give them all a chance
now let's give them all a chance
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
try not to think about it
anymore
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
anymore
no, not anymore, oh
no, it didn't work out
no, it didn't work out the way we thought it would
no, it didn't work out
(an arranged marriage is not so good)
thank God it's you
ya know your timing is impeccable
and I'm not fooling you
I don't know what to do
some dude just knocked me cold
and left me on the sidewalk
took everything I had
and everything I had
try not to think about it,
Alice Childress
try not to think about it
anymore
it's getting late where you are,
Alice Childress
anymore
no, not anymore
anymore
You want... you wan...
You wanna play a country song?
I don't think we played...
I don't think we played this country song here,
before, actually in London.
Played it up North, didn't we...
I don't think we did.
(No we didn't - you're right.)
stop me, oh-a-oh stop me...
(I'm not gonna.)
how many special people change?
(An old American standard.)
how many lives are living strange?
where were you
when we were getting high?
slowly walking down the hall
faster than a cannonball
where were you
when we were getting high?
some day you will find me
caught beneath a landslide
in a Champagne Supernova
in the sky
some day you will find me
caught beneath a landslide
in a Champagne Supernova
a Champagne Supernova
in the sky...

yeah you can easily dispose of
your redneck past
you'll show them all back home
désolé,
je suis Américain
please cook my steak again
je suis Américain
désolé,
je ne parle pas Français
(yo!]
(yo!]
(break some up!)
(break some up!)
laws
vary from state to state
get ya some books on tape
to learn about holes in space
if you're afraid they might uncover
your redneck ass
there are a hundred ways to cover
your redneck past
home
it's good to be back home
home
home
home
home
home
(home)
I remember
the night we met
that night we sat
entwined
under summer skies
I looked into your eyes
and you looked into mine
you said, "you're not like the rest"
(Oleander holly)
and I nodded
(Crimson feet of Collie)
"no one understands me",
you said
and I nodded once again,
(Beautiful and lovely)
as if to agree that all men
are indeed the same
(my baby)
somehow, you said,
(the only one)
I was different
(who really understands me)
(Floating hand in hand we)
(whisper in the moonlight)
(and say that I'm)
(the things you want to see)
(Coda and her star child)
for months on end
I maintained
(Goddess of the moonlight)
a veneer of sincere interest
(hold me in the morning)
as if I were listening
as you relived every page
(and tell me I'm)
of self-help and new age
(the only one alive)
that you had read
and I went in for the kill
(who really understands you)
I'd read the same books
(tell me pretty stories)
I learned to ape the motions
of a "sensitive" human being
(say you understand me)
and we were "oh-so-happy",
(my baby)
but you found things too fixed
(the things you want to see)
and I knew it was time
to move on
(that I could never be)
(in love)
(in love)
so now you have me
completely figured out
you feel sorry for me
I can't express my feelings,
I can't tell the truth
we are all alike
at puberty I was sworn to secrecy
by the international brotherhood
of lying fickle males
I can't tell you anything
and I can't commit!
you're right!
I can't commit...
to you!
(hold me in the morning)
I will always treasure
our time together
(tell me pretty stories)
I don't feel enough of anything
to harbor the kind of disdain
(say that you're the only one)
that you'll maintain
you painted me into what you
(my baby)
wanted to see,
and that's fine,
(but I could never be)
but you will never know me
(in love)
(in love)
(Oleander holly)
(Crimson feet of Collie)
(beautiful to hold me)
(my baby)
(the only one)
Every night around this time
He has to sing 'Belinda'
"Belinda, I love you
Don't leave me, I need you"
He tried to stop a while back
But what is he without her?
A one hit wonder with no hits is what he is
And anyway
He always hears how much it means to people
There's a lot of fortysomethings
Who wouldn't be in the world without it
So now he does it with this lyric in his head
Belinda, I loved you
I'm sorry that i left you
I met somebody younger on a plane
She had big breasts
A nice smile
No kids either
She gave me complimentary champagne
No-one ever wants to hear the song he wrote for Cindy
"Cindy, I love you
I need you, don't leave me"
And he can't blame them, they can tell
His heart was never in it
And Cindy never liked it but
She never much liked him
Belinda, I loved you
I'm sorry that i left you
I met somebody younger on a plane
She had big breasts
A nice smile
No kids either
She gave me complimentary champagne
So every night about this time
He feels the old self loathing
While the old folks in the audience sing along
And he smiles and waves the mic at them
So they can do the chorus
But he's not there, he's somewhere else
He's with Belinda
In the days before he made it all go wrong
Belinda, I love you
She gave me complimentary champagne
