Birmingham (i/ˈbɜrmɪŋəm/ BUR-ming-əm, locally /ˈbɜrmɪŋɡəm/ BUR-ming-gəm) is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands of England. It is the most populous British city outside the capital London, with a population of 1,036,900 (2010 estimate), and lies at the heart of the West Midlands conurbation, the second most populous urban area in the United Kingdom with a population of 2,284,093 (2001 census). Birmingham's metropolitan area is also the United Kingdom's second most populous with a population of 3,683,000.
A medium-sized market town during the medieval period, Birmingham grew to international prominence in the 18th century at the heart of the Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw the town at the forefront of worldwide developments in science, technology and economic organisation, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society. By 1791 it was being hailed as "the first manufacturing town in the world". Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly-skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided a diverse and resilient economic base for industrial prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century. Its resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of broad-based political radicalism, that under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy.

He is also the Executive Director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT), a data-gathering center on Islamist groups. Emerson frequently testifies before Congressional committees on al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.
Emerson received a Bachelors of Arts from Brown University in 1976, and a Master of Arts in sociology in 1977.
He went to Washington, D.C., in 1977 with the intention of putting off his law school studies for a year. He worked on staff as an investigator for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee until 1982, and as an executive assistant to Democratic Senator Frank Church of Idaho.
Amanda Meta Marshall (born August 29, 1972, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian pop-rock singer.
She grew up in Toronto in a biracial family, with a White Canadian father and a Black Trinidadian mother. In several of her songs, Marshall has reflected on her racial identity "as a woman who looks white but is also half-black".
Marshall studied music extensively during her childhood, including at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. While performing on the Queen Street West bar scene in her teens, she met guitarist Jeff Healey, who was struck by her powerful voice and took her on tour.
Marshall signed a recording contract with Metalblade Records in 1991, but both parties agreed that they were not a good fit and went their separate ways. In 1994, Marshall signed to Epic Records, and contributed to the Neil Young tribute album Borrowed Tunes: A Tribute to Neil Young the same year. Her debut album Amanda Marshall was released the following year in 1995. The album was a major success in Canada, generating a great deal of airplay and spawning six Top 40 hits -- "Let It Rain", "Beautiful Goodbye", "Dark Horse", "Fall From Grace", "Sitting on Top of the World", and "Birmingham", her most successful hit in Canada and the only song to reach the US charts.
Adam Mitchel Lambert (born January 29, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter and stage actor. Born in Indianapolis but raised in San Diego, Lambert had dreamed of becoming a performer after appearing in numerous amateur productions in his childhood and adolescence. His passion overtook him when deciding to drop out of college, pursue his career, and perform in various professional theatrical productions across the world.
Lambert came to prominence following his appearance on the eighth season of American Idol. Although he was runner-up, Lambert launched a music career with the release of his debut studio album For Your Entertainment (2009) after signing with 19 in a joint venture with RCA. Debuting at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 198,000 copies in the U.S. in its first week, and reaching the top 10 in several countries worldwide, the album subsequently achieved international success with its singles "For Your Entertainment", "Whataya Want from Me" and "If I Had You". Soon after, he embarked on his first headlining worldwide concert tour, Glam Nation, making him the only American Idol contestant to do so in the year following his Idol season. The tour was followed by two live releases: an extended play entitled Acoustic Live! (2010), and a live CD/DVD Glam Nation Live (2011), which debuted at number one on the SoundScan Music Video chart. Lambert took executive producer credit and was a principal writer on his second studio album, Trespassing, which was released to critical acclaim on May 15, 2012.Trespassing made its debut in the number one spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, also topping the Billboard Digital Albums Chart and Canada's Digital Albums Chart. With this accomplishment, Lambert makes music history as the first openly gay artist to achieve the top charting position.
Penny Woolcock (born January 1, 1950, in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a British filmmaker, opera director, and screenwriter. She was raised in a British community in Montevideo, speaking English and going to English schools. Her father, an accountant, had wanted to be a writer.
In 1967, she founded a radical theatre group and was briefly arrested; her parents wanted to send her to Europe for safety. Instead, she fled to Spain with a man from the theater group and had a baby in Barcelona.
In 1970 she moved to England as a single mother. She did factory work and other jobs. In her thirties she enrolled in a filmmakers' workshop, borrowed film-making equipment, and sold the resulting feature to BBC Channel 4. She then was hired as a director and editor of a current-affairs program originating in Newcastle. From there, she went on to feature-making. Her first feature as a writer and director was Women in Tropical Places in 1989. Since then she has directed and/or written seven films. She adapted and directed Macbeth on the Estate in 1997.

I've never been so blue as I am now in this old town
You don't know how homesick I am to see the streets of my hometown
I left in search of greener grass but oh what a fool I am
There's just no place that I have found with greener grass than Birmingham
Birmingham Alabam a mighty pretty town the town from I am
And I'm gonna settle down in Birmingham
It's a town I'll soon be seein' then I'll feel like a human bein'
I'm southworth they're gonna pitch my tens in Birmingham
[ piano - guitar ]
I'm gonna buy some big red roses for my girl when I come home
There's nothing good enough to bring the little girl who wears my ring
And I'm goin' there just as soon as I can back to my hometown
And I'll never say goodbye to them that little girl in Birmingham
Birmingham Alabam...
Hey ya
Virgil Spencer's got a nineteen-inch Hitachi
And many demons lingering
Friday night he pulled a gun to change the channel
Something that he picked up from a kid
His wife remembers well the man she knew
Seems the dreams she had have all turned black and blue
She's wasted years, no time for tears
'Cause there's another chance and someday soon
Shining like the Alabama moon
She's looking for her promised land
Out beyond the lights of Birmingham
It's three A.M. and Virgil's passed out on the sofa
A fifth of Jim Beam on the floor
She's packed a bag she slips the keys out of his pocket
She's careful not to slam the door
And as she drives she rubs her rosary
She's never been so all alone, she's never felt so free
She's got miles to go, blind faith and hope
'Cause there's another chance and someday soon
Shining like the Alabama moon
She's looking for her promised land
Out beyond the lights of Birmingham
As the rain falls down upon the interstate
Any doubts she had are all but washed away
One long look back at Birmingham
'Cause there's another chance and someday soon
Shining like the Alabama moon
She's looking for her promised land
Out beyond the lights of Birmingham
Another chance and someday soon
Shining like the Alabama moon
She's looking for her promised land, yea
Out beyond the lights of, yea yea Birmingham, Birmingham, yea yea
Oh baby, yea someday soon
Baby someday soon, yea someday soon
Hey hey yea, keep on driving
Delta mama and a Nickajack man
Raised their Cumberland daughter in a Tennessee band
Played Springwater at Station Inn
Couldn't play fast, couldn't fit in
Caught a '66 Dodge in Caroline
Got her education on her mama's dime
She was singing in a bar called Comatose
Halfway rusted on the salty coast
Rock of Ages, cleave for me
Let me hide myself in Thee
Buried in the sand
Five hundred miles from Birmingham
Rock 'em out cowboy in a rock and roll band
Plugged his amplifier in all across the land
Athens, Georgia on a friday night
Saw that little girl, she could sing alright
Spent five years going from town to town
Waiting on that little girl to come around
Caught in the arms of New York City
To lose that gal seemed terrible pity
Rock of Ages, cleave for me
Let my heart forget a beat
Why do you demand
Calling me from Birmingham
Pulled her covered wagon off the BQE
Said this'll be the last you'll ever see of me
Well the cowboy laughed said I know it's not true
Cause there's nothing I could do to get loose from you
Made a little money playing in the bars
With two beat up drums and two old guitars
From the Crescent City to the Great Salt Lake
It ain't what you got, it's what you make
When the road got rough and the wheels all broke
Couldn't take more then we could tow
Making something out of nothing with a scratcher and our hope
With two old guitars like a shovel and a rope
Rock of Ages, cleave for me
Let me hide myself in Thee
Now I understand
say the words you'll say
and turn and walk away
hold your breath
for the last time
as you say goodbye
say goodbye to me
just one more dance
and i'll be gone for good, tomorrow
just one last chance
to hear your heart beating
next to mine
and if this is
the last time that i hold you
just know that i still meant
everything i said
when i said
'i still needed you'
and i won't forget
the day we met
how could i ever forget you
and these are the days
that we won't compromise
but you just needed
to do this on your own
but i won't make it through
this thunderstorm romance
just give me one last chance
to say
tonight i will breath the summer air
that reminds me of you
and i promised myself
that i would never drive past your old house
but sometimes i hate you
for leaving me as jaded as i am
and sometimes i miss you so much
that i can hardly breath
and is this what you want
and no more holding hands
walking on the warm sand
in the middle of july
and these are the days
that we won't compromise
and you just needed
to do this on your own
but i won't make it through
this thunderstorm romance
just give me one last chance
to say
goodbye
and these are the last steps i will take
from a northbound train
in the pouring rain
the pouring rain
and these are the last steps i will take
from a northbound train
in the pouring rain
the pouring rain
and these are the days
that we won't compromise
and you just needed
to do this on your own
but i won't make it through
this thunderstorm romance
just give me one last chance
to say goodbye
goodbye
goodnight, goodnight

Because we’re gonna take a step outside
You say that you’d like a cigarette
Well, hey man, I’m happy to oblige
We’re not from around here
And, I’m, I’m hoping that’s alright
See, we just left that pub right here
So far it’s been a pretty good night
Now, I see that you’ve been drinking
And honestly so have I
Did something I said just come off as rude?
I actually thought I was being quite polite
So when you punched me the first time
It came as a big surprise
But the second time that was your mistake
It sure as hell wasn’t mine, it was not mine
Two steps ahead and then you said
“You’re not from Birmingham”
Just what were you thinking?
Turned out to be a waste of time
You got to ride in a cop car
And that blood is yours it is not mine
Two steps ahead and then you said
“You’re not from Birmingham”
“You’re not from Birmingham”
Two steps ahead and then you said
“You’re not from Birmingham”
Two steps ahead and then you said
“You’re not from Birmingham”
“You’re not from Birmingham”
“You’re not from Birmingham”
“You’re not from Birmingham”
“You’re not from Birmingham”
Birmingham, don't mean the one over in Alabam
There is no-one who's been through more than you
And still come through with love to spare
You really care, you lovely lady you.
Birmingham, with your air so cosmopolitan
Well I don't mean that disrespectfully
For you have always shared you home
With all who've come to love you like I do.
INSTRUMENTAL
It's time you city people turned to look
And take a leaf out of this lady's book.
Birmingham, you may not be a Venice or a Cannes
But you have shown us what life's all about
It's time to shout your praises round
They'll never knock you down
We love you Birmingham.
Birmingham
Good old Birm
I didn't have a plan
I was running from all I can
Hoping to safely land in the keys somewhere
With my feet in the sand
But I finally made a stand
When I broke down in Birmingham
You kindly gave your hand
And I held on tight as if you were my prayer
You said "Stay with me
I will help you to breath"
I said "I'm not who you think I am
But I'll gladly be your man
In Birmingham"
You took me into your past
With letters and photographs
You told me your father left
When you were only ten and that he never came back
And I saw you wave your hand
As I was leaving from Birmingham
You said that if I can I should come back soon
I should remember that
You can stay with me
I will help you to breath
But I said "I'm not who you think I am
But I'll gladly be your man
In Birmingham"
And we stood face to face
Outside in the pouring rain
You said "don't forget my name
When you find your way"
"Cause you can stay with me
I will help you to breath"
But I said "I'm not who you think I am
But I'll gladly be your man
I guess I've been down this road before
I guess that I've seen these scars before
I wanna see just like I need to see
I wanna breathe just like I need to breathe
This whole thing makes me sick
I'm so tired of dealing with it
I am so mixed up
You stand, bruised up, right in all this
Looking for this to change
I don't know where this came from
This awkward limp
I got from myself
I wanna be just like I need to be
I'm gettin' free just like I've gotta be
This whole thing makes me sick
I'm so tired of dealing with it
I am so mixed up
You stand, bruised up, right in all this
Looking for this to change
This whole thing makes me sick
I'm so tired of dealing with it
I am so mixed up
This whole thing makes me sick
I'm so tired of dealing with it (I am all mixed up)
I am so mixed up
You stand, bruised up, right in all this
Looking for this to change
The Statue of Liberty outside of Birmingham
Stands by the highway, raises its lily white hand
Boatloads of people rush to America's Birmingham
And you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't
So you get yourself a job just to take something home
Now there's food on the table but nothing left over in Birmingham
Birmingham is just a place
Birmingham is just a place to be
And you're working for nothing, making a living
Meanwhile the kingpins are making a killing
Boatloads of people are ready and willing in Birmingham
We live on the edge of a brand new world order
Breaking down factories, breaking down borders
The only surprise is the dream's still alive down in Birmingham
Birmingham is just a place
Birmingham is just a place to be

Face the facts and don't look back
There's a hole in this middle town affair
There's a whole inquest
Like a hole in the rest
That I think I'm going to have to sit in
You're a sleeping bag
You're a rhyming slug
Pressure pressure
Man is sick of chairs
From the heart of the sins above ground
Around here I think I'm Jesus
And I'm sick of all the songs about love
There's a head hunt in Birmingham
We're going to hurry down the same old roads
I'm not going to think that I'm a Jesus
Sorry this and sorry that's the same old bone
Pressure pressure
