Clowns are comic performers stereotypically characterized by the grotesque image of the circus clown's colored wigs, stylistic makeup, outlandish costumes, unusually large footwear, and red nose, which evolved to project their actions to large audiences. Other less grotesque styles have also developed, including theatre, television, and film clowns. Peter Berger writes that "It seems plausible that folly and fools, like religion and magic, meet some deeply rooted needs in human society". For this reason, clowning is often considered an important part of training as a physical performance discipline, partly because tricky subject matter can be dealt with, but also because it requires a high level of risk and play in the performer.
The humour in clowning comes from the self deprecating actions of the performer, rather than the audience laughing with the performer as is common with other forms of comedy.
The term coulrophobia has been coined to describe those individuals who report a fear of clowns.

Plot
Alexandria, 391 AD: Hypatia teaches astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. Her student Orestes is in love with her, as is Davus, her personal slave. As the city's Christians, led by Ammonius and Cyril, gain political power, the institutions of learning may crumble along with the governance of slavery. Jump ahead 20 years: Orestes, the city's prefect, has an uneasy peace with Christians, led by Cyril. A group from the newly empowered Christians has now taken to enforce their cultural hegemony zealously; first they see the Jews as their obstacle, then nonbelievers. Hypatia has no interest in faith; she's concerned about the movement of celestial bodies and "the brotherhood of all". Although her former slave doesn't see it that way.

Hypatia: Synesius, you don't question what you believe, or cannot. I must.
Hypatia: [Looks up at night sky] If I could just unravel this just a little bit more, and just get a little closer to the answer, then... Then I would go to my grave a happy woman.
Heladius Dignitary: The majority of us here... have accepted Christ. Why not the rest of you? It's only a matter of time and you know it.::Hypatia: Really? It is just a matter of time?... As far as I am aware, your God has not yet proved himself to be more just or more merciful than his predecessors. Is it really just a matter of time before I accept your faith?::Heladius Dignitary: Why should this assembly accept the council of someone who admittedly believes in absolutely nothing?::Hypatia: I believe in philosophy.
Hypatia: Ever since Plato, all of them - Aristarchus, Hipparchus, Ptolemy - they have all, all, all tried to reconcile their observations with circular orbits. But what if another shape is hiding in the heavens?::Davus: Another shape? Lady, there is no shape more pure than the circle; you taught us that.::Hypatia: I know, I know, but suppose - just suppose! - the purity of the circle has blinded us from seeing anything beyond it! I must begin all over with new eyes. I must rethink everything!... What if we dared to look at the world just as it is. Let us shed for a moment every preconceived idea - what shape would it show us?
Davus: I was forgiven but now I can't forgive.::Ammonius: Forgive? Who the Jews?::Davus: Well Jesus pardoned them on the cross.
Mrs. Murray: And now, ladies and gentlemen, to kick off tonight's entertainment I am pleased to present Max the magnificent and his equally magnificent assistant Traci Walker.
Mrs. Murray: Max I can't believe it, you made this fundraiser the most successful one the school has ever had. Thank you.
Rose: Working 'til I drop for an audience of four: three nuns and a mother.::Marcel Richard: It's no good complaining.::Rose: But she only bothered because it was raining.
Gulietta: If death were given a voice, that voice would scream through the sky 'Live while you may for I am coming.' So hand me the wine and the dice. I want my carnival now while I have thirst and lust for living. So gather all you can reap before you're under the plough. The hand of death is unforgiving.
George: Rose, I ought to strangle you!
Alex: Got a feeling George is watching us. Only he could make a wake this joyous.
Alex: God, what a fool I was to love you! What was all my searching for? It's never hard to find a whore!
Jenny: Say the word, say it now! Nice and loud!::Alex: What the hell, then. UNCLE! Jenny, you're a monster, you ought to be locked up.::Jenny: Before I am, I think I'll dress for dinner.
Young Jenny: Why don't you go and forge another masterpiece, instead.
George: I came to watch a circus, not an overgrown child!
Giulietta: Still, George, Rose would seem the kind of woman who could live through any blood bath.
Giulietta: Last year, he forgot my birthday so I rearranged his bookmarks.

I sorta noticed you were all over me
And never would I let you were a clown
And before I knew it, you were there
And you climb in the window and
Think you struck gold you didn't
You kinda ripped up my soul
And I held on for dear life
Hoped you would leave you did
You kinda ripped up my soul, soul
You wanted everything I got and you
Gave nothing at all, you held me down
And I hope you're dying but who isn't
And you put on your overcoat faking your business
You kinda ripped up my soul
And you're taking a liberty and now I
Hate you for it, you kinda ripped up my soul
And you're talking I hope, I cannot hear
And I'm hoping you go away and then let me be, yeah
And you climb in the window and
Think you struck gold you didn't
You kinda ripped up my soul
And I held on for dear life
Hoped you would leave you did
You kinda ripped up my soul
Is the music too loud
Is he eluding the crowd
Does he know how to sing
or it's terribly, terribly me
See that girl over there
Is she trying to get somewhere?
Don't you think she's a thrill?
Or is terribly, terribly me...
See that look in her eyes
Is she thinking that clown should die?
Does he know how to sing
or is terribly, terribly...
Why? Is it so hard to believe in those things that we need and
Why is it so?
Step inside thru the sounds recall
Distorted melody in the wall
Frightened as I came so close
Wandering if I want to do?
Secrets hidden calling
Afraid to see, it’s coming on
There’s a box appear in shadows
I can’t wait to open it all
The clown and its fate converges
As pride and death embrace
And his eyes will tell the story
His sorrow made the scene
And the crowd applaud
As the show starts to thrill
And his smile reveals the story
Staring thru his eyes
Sick and paralyzed
Mystery in his smile
Clenched inside a lie
Clown:
Sorry to cut your story!!!
It’s been so long
I drifted away
On this endless torture made me blind
All these times I can’t be with you,
But now it’s time to meet again
Something inside controls yourself
You’ll hope something to find in yourself
The clown and its fate converges
As pride and death embrace
And his eyes will tell the story
His sorrow made the scene
And the crowd applaud
As the show starts to thrill
And his smile lives inside me
You think it’s just a dream
You think I’m falling down
You think I’m just a smile
You think I’m just a dream but it’s not
You think I’m falling down but I’m not
Don’t think I’m lying you, ‘cos it’s right
You think I’m just a clown, but I’m not
Now you know the mystery
It’s time to know the rest
You’ll join inside this endless story
I should've left it at, how ya doin'
I should've left it at
I like your music too, and
I should've never called you back
When you pursued me
I should've never given you
My fucking N two way
I should've never listened
To your woeful stories
The ones I'm sure you
Told a thousand times before me
You should've never intimated
We were lovers
When you know very well
We never even touched each other
Who's gonna love you when
It all falls down, and
Who's gonna love you when
Your bankroll runs out
Who's gonna care when the novelty's over
When the star of the
Show isn't you anymore
Nobody cares when the tears of a clown
Fall down...
Nobody cares when the tears of a clown
Fall down
I gotta break it to ya delicately, dunny
Takin' my g5 twenty minutes wasn't nothin'
But I guess you wouldn't know
That's the way I roll
Consequently now your ego's fully
Overblown
You don't want the world to know
That you're just a puppet show
And the little boy inside
Often sits at home alone
And cries, cries, cries, cries
(Boo hoo. Who?)
Who's gonna love you
When it all falls down, and
Who's gonna love you
When your bankroll runs out
(When your bankroll runs out)
Who's gonna care when the novelty's over
When the star of the
Show isn't you anymore
Nobody (Nobody)
Your pain is so deep rooted
What will your life become
Sure you hide it
But you're lost and lonesome
Still just a frail shook one
Who's gonna love you
When it all falls down, and
(Tell me who's gonna love you? Who? I'd like to know)
Who's gonna love you when
Your bankroll runs out
(If you didn't have nothing)
Who's gonna care when the novelty's over
(Who, who'd still be there)
When the star of the show isn't you anymore
(Nobody, nobody, nobody, oh)
Nobody cares when the tears of a clown
(There ain't nobody baby)
Fall down...
(Bullies in the schoolyard)
(When they fall they fall hard)
Nobody cares when the tears of a clown
(Yeah... so you)
Fall down
(Better think twice, better play nice)
('Cause who's gonna be there)
Who's gonna love you when it all falls down, and
(When the jokes on you)
Who's gonna love you when your bankroll runs out
(A marionette show)
Who's gonna care when the novelty's over
(Who's makin' you move though)
When the star of the show isn't you anymore
(I know what kills you slow)
Nobody cares when the tears of a clown
(I'm gonna keep your little)
Fall down
(Secret though, mmmm, hmmmm)
(And you know that I know)
Nobody cares when the tears of a clown
(You're no superhero)
Fall down...
Could this please be the last time
could this time be just for me?
Make my hair put my make-up on
make me ready for my show
See the star see the star now
clap your hands clap your hands now
please don't cry I’ll make you laugh again
On the rope up high here
all these years such silence
where’s my home where are my sons?
all my life a funny wig
See the star see the star now
hail the clown hail the clown now
The lights have gone dim, and the people are gone.
And clown goes back into his caravan.
Hangs up his smile on a hook by the door
And lets his ragged coat slip to the floor.
With the sound of the children's laughter
Still ringing in his ears.
Laughing 'cause they're happy,
They laugh to hide their fears.
Clown loves the children
For, like him, they fear.
The world does not exist tonight,
And only the circus,
Only the circus is real.
As real as the elephants that trumpet in the ring.
Real like the trapeze, see it swing.
Real like the man who eats real fire,
Real like the lady on the high wire.
But the people have gone, his identity gone.
Clown peeps through he window of his caravan.
From the trees on the common
The town looks so small.
Clown puts on his coat and goes out the door.
And the distant neon lights
They shine above the town.
"It's almost like a circus", thinks clown.
Then half with fear
And half with delight,
Shivering, shaking.
Clown stands laughing,
Clown stands laughing,
Anything fades
and withers away
tomorrow is past. to dose to stay
l've never heard that voice before - nevermore
l've been trying to tease you
l've been trying to please you
how can l make your time worthwhile
Life's to be lived
the road shall be long
let's sing our fate
a happy song: l WANT TO BE A CLOWN
l WANT TO BE A CLOWN
FOOL AROUND
AND MAKE YOU LAUGH
Now what can l do. to catch a smile
Forever young
In sweet desire
It's but a law
We have to break
there must be more ways. we can take
How can l blame you
for l cannot save you
how can l make
your time worthwhile /The bitterest taste
of the years l waste
is that l spare my mind
You picked the perfect time to say you never loved me now, now
I heard you crept around and all that shit just broke me down, down , down
But we argue, then break up, have angry sex and make up
But something just ain't right this time, how long its gonna take us?
Well maybe you just tired of me and I won't let you go right.......?
Damn you know that's a joke right?
But I just play it off like ain't nobody hurting me
But I hope you find somebody that's worse than me
Then you can feel like I do, I hope he brings you down, down, down
You got me feeling like a clown
I can't get with this attitude and over the way that you act now (I don't know why you act an asshole)
And all your friends and family say I look like the douche bag, how? (But i just laugh and say is that so?)
Man we argue then break up, but now I got my cake up
And I know that you want me back
You hide behind that makeup
Well maybe we can start it fresh, lets give it a go, right....?
You know that's a joke right
But I just play it off like ain't nobody hurting me
But I hope you find somebody that's worse than me
Then you can feel like I do, I hope he brings you down, down, down
You got me feeling like a clown
Round and round, up and down we go (3x)
we go, we go, we go, ay yo
Where do I start, I'm jumping thru hoops while you throw the darts
With a smile on my face while you aim for the heart
Your temper is shorter than dwarfs
And the elephant up in the room is
I hear these rumors growing like tumors
Soon as I get up, you wanna knock me down
To humor yourself, i feel like a clown
But I just play it off like ain't nobody hurting me
But I hope you find somebody that's worse than me
Then you can feel like I do, I hope he brings you down, down, down
Crying loud, you are crawling on the floor
Just a beautiful baby
You're nothing more
Close your eyes
You are crawling into sleep
I swear I won't break you
If you let me take you
Where the willows never weep
Where the willows never weep
Coming quick into your wonderland
Flying high on bleached white sand
Tranquilized by lights
You'll lose your way
Well just come with me
And I'll make you see
With me you'll want to stay
Can baby come out to play
Down you're going
Down you're going
Down you're going
Down
Circus lights are shutting slowly down
But still you're up in the air
And loving your wings
My dear, you play the clown
You're still up in the air
And loving your wings
How does it feel
to do what you do?
Wandering around
in a costume that stinks
High above the clouds
trying to get by
You don?t make me smile
Even when you pass me by
You can?t make me smile
It?s plain and simple
what you have to do to get by
How does it feel
to do what you do?
Wandering around
In a complete misery
You don?t make me smile
Even when you pass me by
You can?t make me smile
It?s plain and simple

ORCHESTRAL RECAP OF SONG
VM SO, HIDE WHAT YOUR'RE FEELING INSIDE,
VM&CH; REMEMBER, YOU'RE JUST A CLOWN.
No minor love can make the darkness right;
Alone, deserted by the warm spotlight
I breathe the meaning of the words that I must need her.
The colder seas of my sleeping mind
Make muddy dreams until no peace I find;
Through fields Elysian beg to see my life again, once again.
And here at last I stand revealed a clown;
And who can doubt the painted fool upon this circus has always been a clown.
No mind to colour now, no page to write;
Cold pools of morning stain the virgin white;
Another day without her love, and I still need her.
And so the stage is set, the time is right,
And waves of laughter shake the gods this night;
Another day will make a fool delight the children.
And so I stand at last revealed a clown;
And who can doubt this painted fool
Who maybe has no mind at all
Would ever walk where he might fall
And gain the laughter of us all,
Oh, who would doubt the painted fool upon this circus stage has always been a clown
I see a clown painting his face once more
Before the show has started
He paints a smile on his face with his makeup now
Although he's broken hearted
But the rule of the clown is simple
And the show must go on as always
People are there to laugh at him
And he mustn't let them down
He's lost someone dear to him
And he's crying now although he doesn't show it
He gives the show of his life though he's breaking down
Although you'd never know it
But there's something different about his smile
An unfamiliar frown
Yes, there's something different about him now
I sorta noticed you were all over me
And never would I let you were
A clown
And before I knew it you were there
And you climb in the window and
Think you struck gold you didn’t
You kind ripped up my soul
And I held on for dear life
Hoped you would leave you did
You kind ripped up my soul, soul
You wanted everything I got and you
Gave nothing at all, you held me down
And I hope you’re dying, but who isn’t
And you put on your overcoat faking
Your business
You kinda ripped up my soul
And you’re taking a liberty and now I
Hate you for it, you kinda ripped
Up my soul
And you’re talking I hope I cannot hear
And I’m hoping you go away and then let
Me be yeah
And you climb in the window and
Think you struck gold you didn’t
You kinda ripped up my soul
And I held on for dear life
Hoped you would leave you did
You kinda ripped up my soul
Soul
Soul
Soul
Anger inside builds within my body
Why you hate me? What have I done?
You tried to hit me!
Scream at me again, if you like?
Throw your hate at me, with all your might
Hit me 'cause I'm strange, hit me
Tell me I'm a pussy and you're harder than me
What's with you boy? Think hard
A tattooed body to hide who you are
Scared to be honest, be yourself
A cowardly man
I don't run around trying to be what's not within me
Look into my eyes, I am free
You're just a wanna be
Scream at me again, if you like
Throw your hate at me, with all your might
Hit me 'cause I'm strange, hit me
Tell me I'm a pussy and you're harder than me
What's with you boy? Think hard
A tattooed body to hide who you are
Scared to be honest, be yourself
A cowardly man
To come out
Hit me clown because I'm not from your town now, hit me clown
Hit me clown because I'm not from your town now, hit me clown
Hit me clown because I'm not from your town now, hit me clown
Hit me clown because I'm not from your town now, hit me clown
Clown you ain't shit! Turn around! Get your face split!
Clown you ain't shit! Turn around! Get your face split!
Clown you ain't shit! Turn around! Get your face split!
Clown you ain't shit! Turn around! Get your face split!
Turn if you like
Throw your hate at me, with all your might
Hit me 'cause I'm strange, hit me
Tell me I'm a pussy and you're harder than me
What's with you boy? Think hard
A tattooed body to hide who you are
Scared to be honest, be yourself

I'm just too fucking little!
I'm just too fucking little!
I'm just too fucking little!
I'm just a fucking mental!
I'm just a fucking mental!
I'm just a fucking mental!
I'm just a fucking mental!
I guess it's funnier from where you're standing
'Cause from over here I've missed the joke
Cleared the way for my crash landing
I've done it again, another number for your notes
I'd be smiling if I wasn't so desperate
I'd be patient if I had the time
I could stop and answer all of your questions
As soon as I find out
How I could move from the back of the line
So I'll be your clown
Behind the glass
Go 'head and laugh 'cause it's funny
I would too if I saw me
I'll be your clown
On your favorite channel
My life's a circus-circus rounding circles
I'm selling out tonight
I'd be less angry if it was my decision
And the money was just rolling in
If I had more than my ambition
I'll have time to please
I'll have time to thank you as soon as I win
So I'll be your clown
Behind the glass
Go 'head and laugh 'cause it's funny
I would too if I saw me
I'll be your clown
On your favorite channel
My life's a circus-circus rounding circles
I'm selling out tonight
From a distance my choice is simple
From a distance I can entertain
So you can see me I put makeup on my face
But there's no way you can feel it
From so far away
So I'll be your clown
Behind the glass
Go 'head and laugh 'cause it's funny
I would too if I saw me
I'll be your clown
On your favorite channel
My life's a circus-circus rounding circles
