The Glascarnoch Dam to Altnaharra - The Scottish Adventure - Episode Five
Day two of our Adventure would see us travelling in a clockwise loop around the north Highlands visiting the hamlet of Altnaharra, the most northerly point on mainland Britain; Easter Head, on Dunnet Head, then travelling to John o' Groats and on to Brora, a village in the east of Sutherland and finally back to our camp in the village of Contin, a distance of 296 miles. In this Episode we will be travelling from the Glascarnoch Dam near our camp in Contin to Altnaharra. Altnaharra is a small hamlet in Sutherland in the Highland region of Scotland. The name Altnaharra is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Allt na h-Eirbhe, meaning Stream at the boundary wall. This is named after a stream that flows through the hamlet. Altnaharra is famous for the Altnaharra Hotel, which opened in 1820 and quickly became a popular place for anglers and mountain climbers to stay while visiting the area. The Glascarnoch dam was built in the 1950s and created the man-made Loch Glascarnoch, the dam is used to collect water from Loch Vaich and Loch Droma, which is then used to feed the Mossford power station via a five mile tunnel. The Retro Lab's Scottish Adventure is a two thousand mile road trip around Scotland in which we continued our mission to find Britain's (and maybe even the world's) best driving roads, also visiting many castles and other points-of-interest along the way, but it didn't go quite how we had planned.... Altnaharra to the most northerly point in mainland Britain - The Scottish Adventure - Episode Six
In this episode we visit the most northerly point on mainland Britain; Easter Head, on Dunnet Head! Dunnet Head is a peninsula in Caithness that includes the most northerly point of the mainland of Great Britain, Easter Head, about 11 miles west-northwest of John o' Groats and about 12 miles from Duncansby Head, on a clear day it affords excellent views of the islands Stroma to the east and Hoy and the Orkney Mainland, to the north across the Pentland Firth. The B855, which is the single track road that lead us to Easter Head is the most northerly road on mainland Britain. The Retro Lab's Scottish Adventure is a two thousand mile road trip around Scotland in which we continued our mission to find Britain's (and maybe even the world's) best driving roads, also visiting many castles and other points-of-interest along the way, but it didn't go quite how we had planned....
