Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, primarily from a combination of African American blues, country, jazz, and gospel music. Though elements of rock and roll can be heard in country records of the 1930s, and in blues records from the 1920s, rock and roll did not acquire its name until the 1950s.
The term "rock and roll" now has at least two different meanings, both in common usage. The American Heritage Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary both define rock and roll as synonymous with rock music. Encyclopædia Britannica, on the other hand, regards it as the music that originated in the mid-1950s and later developed "into the more encompassing international style known as rock music". For the purpose of differentiation, this article uses the second definition.
In the earliest rock and roll styles of the late 1940s and early 1950s, either the piano or saxophone was often the lead instrument, but these were generally replaced or supplemented by guitar in the middle to late 1950s. The beat is essentially a blues rhythm with an accentuated backbeat, the latter almost always provided by a snare drum. Classic rock and roll is usually played with one or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm), a string bass or (after the mid-1950s) an electric bass guitar, and a drum kit.
Avril Ramona Lavigne (pronunciation: /ˈævrɨl ləˈviːn/; AV-ril lə-VEEN; born 27 September 1984) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She was born in Belleville, Ontario, but spent most of her youth in the small town of Napanee. By the age of 15, she had appeared on stage with Shania Twain; by 16, she had signed a two-album recording contract with Arista Records worth more than $2 million. In 2002, when she was 17 years old, Lavigne broke onto the music scene with her debut album Let Go.
Let Go made Lavigne the youngest female soloist to reach No. 1 in the UK, and the album was certified four-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. By 2009, over 16 million copies had been sold worldwide. Her breakthrough single, "Complicated", peaked at No. 1 in many countries around the world, as did the album Let Go. Her second album, Under My Skin, was released in 2004 and was her first album to peak at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, eventually selling more than 10 million copies worldwide. The Best Damn Thing, Lavigne’s third album, was released in 2007, becoming her third No. 1 album in the UK Albums Chart and featuring her first U.S. Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, "Girlfriend". Lavigne has scored six number-one singles worldwide, including "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm with You", "My Happy Ending", "Nobody's Home", and "Girlfriend". With more than 30 million copies of her albums sold worldwide, Lavigne is one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the U.S., with over 10.25 million copies certified by the RIAA. Her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby, was released in March 2011. Goodbye Lullaby gave Lavigne her fourth top 10 album on the U.S. Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart and her third No. 1 album in both Japan and Australia. Three months after the release of Goodbye Lullaby, Lavigne began work on her fifth album, which will be released on Epic Records following her departure from RCA Records.
Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty (born October 20, 1950) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was a founding member of the late 1980s supergroup Traveling Wilburys and Mudcrutch. He has also performed under the pseudonyms of Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Muddy Wilbury.
He has recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which remain heavily played on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music, and notably his hits, have become popular among younger generations as he continues to host sold-out shows. Throughout his career, Petty and his collaborators have sold 60 million albums.
Tom Petty was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida, and attended Gainesville High School. His interest in rock and roll music began at age 10 when he met Elvis Presley. In the summer of 1961, his uncle was working on the set of Presley's film Follow That Dream in nearby Ocala, Florida and invited Petty to come down and watch the shoot. He instantly became an Elvis Presley fan and soon traded his Wham-O slingshot for a box of Elvis 45s. In a 2006 interview on the National Public Radio program Fresh Air, Petty said that he knew he wanted to be in a band the moment he saw The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. One of his first guitar teachers was Don Felder, a fellow Gainesville resident, who would later join the Eagles. As a young man, Petty worked briefly on the grounds crew for the University of Florida, but never attended as a student. An Ogeechee lime tree that he planted while employed at the University is now called the Tom Petty tree.
Jeffrey "Jeff" Lynne (born 30 December 1947) is an English songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer who gained fame as the leader and sole constant member of Electric Light Orchestra. He was later a co-founder and member of The Traveling Wilburys together with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. Lynne has produced recordings for artists such as The Beatles, Brian Wilson, Roy Orbison, Dave Edmunds, Del Shannon and Tom Petty. He has co-written songs with Petty and also with George Harrison, whose 1987 album Cloud Nine was co-produced by Lynne and Harrison. Among the many compositions to his credit are such well-known hits as "Livin' Thing", "Evil Woman", "Turn to Stone", "Do Ya", "Xanadu", "Strange Magic", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Telephone Line", "Shine a Little Love", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Hold On Tight", "All Over the World", and "Don't Bring Me Down".
In 2008, The Washington Times named Lynne the fourth greatest record producer in music history.
George Harrison,MBE (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who achieved international fame as lead guitarist of The Beatles. Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison became over time an admirer of Indian culture and mysticism, and introduced it to the other Beatles, as well as their Western audience. Following the band's break-up he was a successful solo artist, and later a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys. Harrison was also a session musician and a film and record producer. He is listed at number 11 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
Although most of The Beatles' songs were written by Lennon and McCartney, Beatle albums generally included one or two of Harrison's own songs, from With The Beatles onwards. His later compositions with The Beatles include "Here Comes the Sun", "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". By the time of the band's break-up, Harrison had accumulated a backlog of material, which he then released as the triple album All Things Must Pass in 1970, from which two hit singles originated: a double A-side single, "My Sweet Lord" backed with "Isn't It a Pity", and "What Is Life". In addition to his solo work, Harrison co-wrote two hits for former Beatle Ringo Starr, as well as songs for the Traveling Wilburys—the supergroup he formed in 1988 with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison.
It's been a long time since I rock and rolled,
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll.
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back,
Let me get it back, baby, where I come from.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Yes it has.
It's been a long time since the book of love,
I can't count the tears of a life with no love.
Carry me back, carry me back,
Carry me back, baby, where I come from.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.
Seems so long since we walked in the moonlight,
Making vows that just can't work right.
Open your arms, opens your arms,
Open your arms, baby, let my love come running in.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.
yeah it has yeah it has
ooh yeah ooh ooh yeah
ooh yeah ooh ooh yeah
It's been a long time since I rock and rolled
It's been a long time since I did the stroll
Ooh let me get back, let me get back
Let me get back, Baby where I come from
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
It's been a long time since the book of love
I can't count the tears of a life with no love
Carry me back, carry me back,
Carry me back, Baby where I come from
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
Seems so long since we walked in the moonlight
Making vows that just can't work right
Open your arms, opens your arms,
Open your arms, Baby let my love come running in
It's been a long time, been a long time,

Ginni said when she was five years old
You know there's nothing going down at all
She turned on that radio
And there was nothing happenin' at all
She turned on that LA station
Couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancing to that fine fine music
Her life was saved by rock and roll
Despite all the complications
You could just dance to that rock and roll station
And it was alright
It was alright
It was alright
It was alright, you betcha
Ginni said when she was five years old
You know our parents will be the death of us all
Two TV sets and two cadillac cars
Well they don't mean nothin' at all
She turned on that LA station
Couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
Her life was saved by rock and roll
Despite all the complications
You could just dance to that rock and roll station
And it was alright
It was alright
It was alright
Jenny said when she was just five years old
you know there's nothing happening at all
Every time she puts on the radio
There was nothing goin' down at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll
Despite all the amputations
You could just dance to a rock 'n' roll station
Jenny said when she was just five years old
My parents are gonna be the death of us all
Two TV sets and two Cadillac cars--
Ain't gonna help us at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She don't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll
Despite all the computations
You could just dance to a rock 'n ' roll station
Some’ll smile
Some’ll roll their eyes
Like it’s a lost dark heart that sees
This world is black
And we can’t get back
So feeing good feels good to me
You can call it my constitution
Call it the common need
Call it a strange devotion man
But if it gets ya what you need
It’s just rock and roll to me
Get it on
Get you what you want
You gotchya best last chance to feel
We gonna roll honey
We got gold, gotta whole damn world to steel
It’s like the drums of the revolution
The backseat scratch and scream
The whiskey shot burn IN the snake oil man
But if it brings you to your knees
It’s just rock and roll to me
Rock and roll, little mama
I got what you need
Rock and roll, motherfuckers
Get down on your knees
It’s like the drums of the revolution
The backseat scratch and scream
The whiskey shot burn in the snake oil man
But if it gets ya what you need
It’s just rock and roll
Rock And Roll, little mama
Rock And Roll, little mama
Rock And Roll
Rock And Roll, motherfuckers
Come on, come on,
[Dagha]
I be the headbanger with the double-edged razor
The breathtaker, dragon slayer slash savior
Assassinator, flame thrower, fascinator
My dagger blade cascade and catch you later
Captivator, spectator, activator
Palladium's packed, they pay me in stacks of paper
Aggravated assault, halt the path of strangers
The strangler, long ranger, the devil devastator
Educated rebel with the heavy metal flavor
Levels is elevated through decibels of danger
Volts from that generator blow the detonator
Decimate the place and left the radius a crater
I cater to the greater entertainer
And blaze the remainder with the energy of anger
Celebrate the maker, I mutilate later
And play a naysayer like a amplified bass player

The riders on the storm enter when The Doors open
To bring raw dosage in the form of swarmed locusts
beatles and byrds that seem evil and absurd
Gather with The Eagles who swerve to form herds
Butterflies made of Iron ride the horizon
Giving credence to the revival of Poseidon
Who feeds in the clearwater, you fear slaughter
But Lovecraft author pens the horror for tomorrow
Zombies and walking dead stalk the Talking Heads
Insects with awkward legs halt with awful dread
All along the web the thread remains red
With bloodshed that led to where the Little Feat fled
To lost places, thoughts lost for all ages
Where Small Faces sit on the walls of tall mazes
That overlook the 13th Floor with long gazes
Connected to the earthly core through elevators
Check it, the Underground is made of Velvet
Where butter-soft brothers talk tough on wax but ain't sell shit
Every cracker that rap ain't the Elvis
My Aqualung cultivates the Blue Öyster shellfish
I design my Pearls Before Swine
And form rhymes that take you to a world before time
Where living things coexisted with Crimson Kings
Who on the Moon's Dark Side painted Pretty Things
That illustrated lesson, conceived by the The Mothers of Invention
Who also built the Stairway To Heaven; it's a present
Only to be stolen by a thief, the Judas Priest
Who unleashed his devil magic
My mental fabric: too thick for Lenny Kravitz
Who imitates Jimi Hendrix in every facet

This is rock n' roll shouts out
Back to the rappers
A lot of people stake claims
Saying hip hop doesn't matter
But really what could be phatter than
Jungle J.B's beats and streetside sounds
Profound are the sounds
That i was hearing
When at the basketball league
This kid said "Yo come here and
Put these head phones on your ears"
I was converted then
And practiced it for years
Rap music, like Jazz, Funk and R&B;
Blues Reggae Rock n' Roll, and rock steady G.
Will be around forever
And its never going out
That's why I took this time to spell these lyrics out
I wanna give thanx to the lyricists MC's
And DJ's that brought me near to this
Blastmaster, KRS-One the teacher
Run D-M-C and the movie Beat Street
Erik B. and Rakim was Paid in Full
De La Soul came along and broke all the rules
I remember when my girl bought me Tribe Called Quest
We broke up later but I kept the cassette
Kool Moe Dee, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane
Main Source, Pharcyde and Dana Dane
Steady B on the hilltop
With Lady B on Power 99 West Philly
Cypress Hill, The Goats and Das EFX
Tupac, EPMD
Lets see who's next
Jungle Brothers, Gang Starr and Bizmarkie Jazzy Jeff, the Fresh Prince
Puts summer in my ears
Slick Rick, Funk Doobie and the Beastie Boys
And all the rest that make some noise
There's plenty more people that's comin on
And the list could run
Til the break of dawn
But right now yo
Its back to the bluesman
Trippin', Rollin', Flyin' or just cruisin'
Yeah fire it up
Eh yo do it right
We gonna go go until the mornin light
Its justa rock n' roll
A little bit of rock n' roll
I like a rock and roll
And give me some rock n' roll
Oh la Oh la yeah
Do you remember the times we spent
All of the old songs
And what they meant to you
Where did you go
Flip it to the b-side one more time
Singing ever word,
Singing every line with you
No they could never know
Around and Around
There's a rock and roll
Record spinning on my stereo
Around and around
There's a rock and roll
Record spinning
And I'm thinking about you
We were the hopeless, the wild ones
Ten years, it's been ten years gone
Now you're gone, and I'm all alone
But I can listen to the music and
It takes me back
Every note just like a photograph on my heart
Before it fell apart
I'm playing records on my stereo
With all the songs we used to know
Rock and Roll, R & B, Pop and
Rock, Reggae and DJ
You whiny, whiny, whiny
You shaky, shaky, shaky
Rock and Roll
We have to live,
Happy be strong,
Have the best of health.
We have to live,
Happy be strong,
Have the best of health.
You whiny, whiny, whiny
You shaky, shaky, shaky
Come, come, Rock and Roll.
The music is a art,
It makes people laugh,
It makes people love,
It makes people shout.
You whiny, whiny, whiny
You shaky, shaky, shaky
Come, come, Rock and Roll.
Come on, forget
About the fear,
We need more confidence
Come people, come.
The time is now, to make
The best of everything.
The time is now, to make
The best of everything.
You whiny, whiny, whiny
You shaky, shaky, shaky
Come, come, Rock and Roll.
No more sadness, It's good
To be happy - so happy.
No more sadness, It's good
To be happy - so happy.
You whiny, whiny, whiny
You shaky, shaky, shaky
Come, come, Rock and Roll.
Rock and Roll, R & B, Pop and

Mmm baby, where I come from
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time

It's been a long time since the book of love
I can't count the tears of a life with no love
Carry me back, carry me back, carry me back
Mmm baby, where I come from, whoa whoa
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
Ah, ah, ah
Oh, it seems so long since we walked in the moonlight
Makin' vows that just couldn't work right
Haw yeah, open your arms, open your arms, open your arms
Baby, let my love come running in, yeah
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
Ooh yeah, ooh ooh yeah, ooh yeah, ooh ooh yeah
It's been a long time, been a long time
Sometimes I sit and I wonder
Why things turned out this way
All the times she made me happy
But I couldn't make her stay
Now I need some lovin'
Don't want to spend my life alone
Yeah, yeah, I need somebody
It's so sad to be alone
It's so sad to be alone
