An investigation is under way after a bus hit a pedestrian on Wellington's notorious inner-city bus lane.

The accident, involving a Valley Flyer bus, happened on Manners St, between Victoria St and Cuba St, shortly after 8am today.

The female pedestrian suffered minor injuries, a police spokesman said.

NZ Bus chief operating officer south Tonia Haskell said the company, which operated the Valley Flyer buses, had started its own investigation into the accident.

This would include talking to the driver, the pedestrian, police, and passengers, as well as checking the bus for defects.

As a matter of course the driver, who was "quite shaken up", had been stood down from work for today.

The bus had also been taken off the road today for checks.Wellington City Council spokesman Clayton Anderson said the council would discuss the accident with Greater Wellington Regional Council and police.

"On first appearances the woman seemed alright and we hope this is the case."

The council was in the process of rolling out a pedestrian road safety "think, look, cross" campaign posters on streets and bus stops, sides of buses, videos online and in cinemas, and print advertisements.

An NZTA report revealed pedestrians were injured in 17 crashes on the street between January 2006 and December 2010.

In 2012, NZ Bus director Tim Brown suffered life-threatening head injuries and a collapsed lung after being run over near Mercer St.

In 2011, not long after the bus lane opened, a female jogger was struck and killed by a bus.
