As news broke that Japanese captive Haruna Yukawa had been executed by Islamic State (IS) today, Japanese social media users were still waging a meme war against the militants.
Memes are images or videos that are typically humorous in nature and are copied and spread by internet users, often with slight variations made to them.
The memes being generated by Japan against IS are darker than most. The photo being used in this case is a screenshot of the two hostages, Yukawa and Kenji Goto, and their captor, believed to be "Jihadi John".
In the past, Japan has sometimes responded to kidnappings in the Middle East by blaming the victims for getting themselves in the mess. But not this time.
Tens of thousands of tweets have been sent with the hashtag #ISISクソコラグランプリ (that translates to ISIS Crap Photoshop Grand Prix) over the past few days. Many of these tweets include photographs from the Islamic State's hostage videos, digitally altered in comical ways.
