German mother and daughter die after Matakana crash

A German mother and daughter have both died following a fatal car crash in Matakana.

Janine Baer, 19, died in hospital last Thursday night after the crash on Wednesday, police said.

Her mother, 48-year-old mother Romy Reinhardt-Baer, died at the scene.

Baer's parents had travelled to New Zealand on holiday for a visit with their daughter. Her father was also injured in the crash and remains in Auckland Hospital.

Inspector Mark Fergus said Baer had been living and working in New Zealand since July last year.

Interpol have assisted police to advise next of kin living in Germany.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

It was raining at the time of the crash and police will look at whether this played any part.

The Serious Crash Unit said the investigation was expected to take several weeks.
