Following the release of their third album ‘I_CON’ which reached #2 in their homeland last year the Dutch alternative rock quintet De Staat return with their ‘Vinticious Versions’ EP out on 24 November on Vinyl/CD/Digital via Cool Green Recordings/Mascot Label Group.
Where I_CON combined instruments in such a way that you don’t immediately recognize which instrument you’re hearing, frontman Torre Florim described it as “very much guitar driven but weirder”, ‘Vinictious Versions’ takes you on another journey altogether. Made up of re-worked versions of their own songs off of their previous three albums ‘I_CON’ (2013), ‘Machinery’ (2011) and ‘Wait for Evolution’ (2009) the EP takes you on a trip down an alternative pathway with familiar surroundings…something that is a little more “dark and delicious” according to Florim.
When talking about breaking down the structure of their songs to re-work them the captivating frontman talks about the approach saying “we're a very sound based band so if we're going to make the song smaller, it's got to be different. In our recordings we’ve used sounds from the 60s and 70s, I like the Tarantino vibe on songs such as The George Baker Selections’ ‘Little Green Bag' – I really like the sound of that.”
Continuing about the backstory of the EP he recalls that the concept arrived when they were asked to play radio sessions and small in-store shows. “We started to think of different versions to play, its way more fun when you go into a radio station with a little guitar amp and an organ and try to do something a little different. We’re not really a chord based band – so when you take a song to a small setting you have to be creative with it.”
“It's not like an acoustic version, we didn’t want to do that, that sound is too sweet, it doesn’t work with our stuff, it's more mellow ...It's dark and delicious” he continues. With that feeling in mind combined with the retro feel of the recordings it brings together the vintage element with the deliciousness giving them the name ‘Vinticious Versions’.
Picking out highlights he opens up further; “one of my favourites is ‘Input Source Select’ – it’s like an old school hip hop track, it sounds like we’ve used lots of old loops but we recorded the drums ourselves and copy and pasted it so it has a drum machine sound – it’s a homage to the Wu-Tang Clan, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest and on Devil’s Blood we went all out and high pitched and was inspired by D’Angelo and stuff like that”.
Band history
De Staat debuted in 2009 with Wait for Evolution and shortly thereafter performed on all major Dutch stages and festivals such as Lowlands and Pinkpop, and internationally at Sziget and Glastonbury. The album was awarded various prizes, and in 2011 and 2012 the band received a 3FM Award for Best Alternative Act. Second album Machinery was released in 2011. Once again, De Staat toured a large number of European venues and festivals, this time with an extra element added to their live shows: a huge, specially built machine. In 2013 they released I_CON, which was awarded an Edison, Holland’s most prestigious music prize. Late 2013 they played three packed out riotous shows at the Black Heart in London.
