At least 23 people have been killed and around 50 are missing from deadly floods in Chile. The rains, which started on Tuesday, were the worst in 80 years to fall in the Atacama region, one of the driest on Earth. Rivers burst their banks after heavy rains in the Andes sent floodwater down into the valleys and towns below. Almost 11,000 people have been affected and more than 4,500 are in shelters. Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo said entire towns had been left without drinking water. … READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/04/01/deadly-floods-wreak-havoc-in-chile What are the top stories today? The heaviest rains to hit Chile in 80 years have left at least seven people dead and many more missing. The extreme weather has caused widespread destruction and flooding in the country's north. Towns have been overwhelmed and roads cut off. "Sadly, we lost everything. There is nothing to recover. So now we have to wait and see what there is, although you can see how little there is to rescue. We have to wait for the mud to go down," said one resident in the small coastal city of Chanaral, … READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/03/26/seven-dead-as-devastating-floods-hit-chile What are the top stories today? A raging forest fire has forced thousands of people to flee their homes in Chile. Around four-and-a-half thousand people have been evacuated from the port city of Valparaiso and neighbouring Vina del Mar. That number could almost quadruple, if the blaze continues to burn out of control. Three firefighters have been injured and a woman has died. A state of emergency has been declared. The focus is on stopping the fire reaching populated areas of Valparaiso, a hilly city of mostly wooden h… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/03/14/chile-thousands-flee-raging-forest-fire What are the top stories today? The military fought to save stranded villagers and tourists in Chile after rains battered the north and caused flooding on Thursday (March 26). The Republic of Chile is an overwhelmingly Spanish-speaking country, with the exceptions of isolated native and immigrant communities. According to Ethnologue, Chile has nine living languages and seven extinct.
Of the 17 million Chileans, some 14 million speak Chilean Spanish as their first language. It is a Spanish dialect which is sometimes difficult for speakers of the Castilian variant of Spanish to understand. It is very similar to Andalusian Spanish in pronunciation but it does have a lot of local slang.
There are some 700,000 Mapuche living in Chile, whereof 200,000 still speak Mapudungun.
Chilean Quechua has some 8,200 speakers in the far northeast high planes. It is believed to possibly be identical to South Bolivian Quechua or at the very least highly intelligible with it.
Rapa Nui, the Polynesian language of Easter Island, is spoken by some 3,400 Chileans, whereof 2,200 live on Easter Island and some 200 live on the mainland.
Some indigenous languages of Chile now extinct are Diaguita, Kakauhua, Kunza and Selknam.
Chile (i/ˈtʃɪliː/ or /ˈtʃɪleɪ/), officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: República de Chile [reˈpuβlika ðe ˈtʃile] ( listen)), is a country in South America occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Along with Ecuador, it is one of two countries in South America that do not border Brazil. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas and Easter Island. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty.
Chile's distinctive shape—4,300 kilometres (2,700 mi) long and on average 175 kilometres (109 mi) wide—makes it the longest country in the world, north to south, with the fifth lengthiest coastline at over 78 thousand kilometers. The diverse climate of Chile ranges from the world's driest desert in the north—the Atacama—through a Mediterranean climate in the centre, humid subtropical in Easter Island, to an Oceanic climate, including alpine tundra and glaciers in the east and south. The northern desert contains great mineral wealth, principally copper. The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands.
