The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35°25′16″N 77°06′34″E / 35.421226°N 77.109540°E / 35.421226; 77.109540, just north of the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. At 70 km (43 mi) long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It falls from an altitude of 5,753 m (18,875 ft) above sea level at its head at Indira Col on the China border down to 3,620 m (11,875 ft) at its terminus.
The Siachen Glacier lies immediately south of the great watershed that separates the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent in the extensively glaciated portion of the Karakoram sometimes called the "Third Pole". The glacier lies between the Saltoro Ridge immediately to the west and the main Karakoram range to the east. The Saltoro Ridge originates in the north from the Sia Kangri peak on the China border in the Karakoram range. The crest of the Saltoro Ridge's altitudes range from 5,450 to 7,720 m (17,880 to 25,330 feet). The major passes on this ridge are, from north to south, Sia La at 5,589 m (18,336 ft), Bilafond La at 5,450 m (17,880 ft), and Gyong La at 5,689 m (18,665 ft). The average winter snowfall is 10.5 m (35 ft) and temperatures can dip to −50 °C (−58 °F). Including all tributary glaciers, the Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 km2 (270 sq mi).

Narendra Damodardas Modi (Gujarati: નરેન્દ્ર મોદી; born 17 September 1950) is the current Chief Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat. Born in a middle class family in Vadnagar, he was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife Heeraben. He has been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since childhood also having interest in politics since adolescence. He holds a master's degree in political science. In 1998, he was chosen by L. K. Advani, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to direct the election campaign in Gujarat as well as Himachal Pradesh.
He became Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001, promoted to the office at a time when his predecessor Keshubhai Patel had resigned, following the defeat of BJP in the by-elections. His tenure as chief minister of Gujarat began on 7 October 2001, and he is the longest serving Chief Minister of the state of Gujarat. In July 2007 he became the longest serving Chief Minister in Gujarat's history when he had been in power for 2063 days continuously. He was elected again for a third term on 23 December 2007 in the state elections, which he had cast as a "referendum on his rule".

Harish Kapadia (Born 11 July 1945) is a distinguished Himalayan Mountaineer from India. He has been awarded the Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographic Society, UK and the Life Time Achievement Award for Adventure by the President of India and the King Albert Mountain Award presented by The King Albert I Memorial Foundation. He has written numerous books and articles on the Indian Himalaya.
He began climbing and trekking in the range around Bombay, the Western Ghats. His first visit to the Himalaya was almost 40 years ago[when?]. His main contribution to Himalayan climbing has been to explore unknown areas and, in number of cases, to open up climbing possibilities. Some of his major ascents have been of Devtoli (6788 m), Bandarpunch West (6102 m), Parilungbi (6166 m), in 1995, Lungser Kangri (6666 m) the highest peak of Rupshu in Ladakh. He led five international joint expeditions, four with the British and two with the French, to high peaks, such as Rimo I (7385 m), Chong Kumdan Kangri I (7071 m), Sudarshan Parbat, and the Panch Chuli and Rangrik Rang groups.

The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35.421226N 77.109540E, just northeast of the point NJ9842 where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends. At 76 km (47 mi) long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It falls from an altitude of 5,753 m (18,875 ft) above sea level at its head at Indira Col on the China border down to 3,620 m (11,875 ft) at its terminus.
The Siachen Glacier lies immediately south of the great watershed that separates the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent in the extensively glaciated portion of the Karakoram sometimes called the "Third Pole". The glacier lies between the Saltoro Ridge immediately to the west and the main Karakoram range to the east. The Saltoro Ridge originates in the north from the Sia Kangri peak on the China border in the Karakoram range. The crest of the Saltoro Ridge's altitudes range from 5,450 to 7,720 m (17,880 to 25,330 feet). The major passes on this ridge are, from north to south, Sia La at 5,589 m (18,336 ft), Bilafond La at 5,450 m (17,880 ft), and Gyong La at 5,689 m (18,665 ft). The average winter snowfall is more than 1000 cm(35 ft) and temperatures can dip to -50 C (-58 F). Including all tributary glaciers, the Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 km2 (270 sq mi).

Indian PM Narendra Modi visits Siachen glacier
Indian PM Narendra Modi has made a brief visit to the Siachen glacier on his way to Indian-administered Kashmir to spend the Diwali festival looking at damage caused by last month's floods.
The glacier, claimed by both India and Pakistan, is known as the world's highest battlefield.
Mr Modi tweeted he was going to Siachen to "spend time with our brave soldiers on this special day".
He is the the second PM after Manmohan Singh to visit the contested site.
Mr Singh visited the glacier in June 2005 and had said it should become a "peace mountain" between India and Pakistan.
More soldiers have died from the harsh weather conditions in Siachen than in combat. Soldiers have been deployed at heights of up to 22,000 ft (6,700m) above sea level on the glacier.
Indian troops snatched control of the glacier in northern Kashmir in April 1984, narrowly beating Pakistan. Three decades later, the two sides remain locked in a stand-off.
Mr Modi will later travel to Kashmir where floods last month killed 281 people and left Srinagar city under water. More than a million people were displaced. He had called the deluge a "national disaster".

He also took part in IPKF and Kargil operations. Prior to retirement he was the Financial Advisor to the Air Officer Commanding in Chief of Western Air Command which is responsible for operations in the entire northern sector including J & K and Siachen Glacier.
Gp Capt Vijayakumar was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal by the President of India for distinguished service of very high order. He was also awarded Commendation Medallion by the Chief of Air Staff and Air Officer Commanding in Chief on four occasions in recognition of service of high order.
Group Captain has deepened MMA’s relationship with its members and Indian Inc. and raised the organisation’s public profile. MMA now attracts top industry leaders and policy makers on its platform.
Under his dynamic leadership MMA has won the National Excellence Award of All India Management Association for the year 2008-09 and Best Management Association in India for three years in a row 2010, 2011, 2012 & AIMA’s National Excellence Award for the year 2013.
Gp Capt Vijayakumar is a keen Golfer, accompanied Indian Golf Team to take part in International Golf Tournament.

The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35.421226°N 77.109540°E, just northeast of the point NJ9842 where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends. At 76 km (47 mi) long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It falls from an altitude of 5,753 m (18,875 ft) above sea level at its head at Indira Col on the China border down to 3,620 m (11,875 ft) at its terminus. -

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent his Diwali morning on Thursday at the Siachen glacier, lauding India's armed forces and saying "125 crore Indians can celebrate Diwali today and go about their lives in comfort because the jawans guard the borders."
He also tweeted that he was wishing the entire country on the occasion "from the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier & with the brave Jawans & Officers."
This was the third time in less than a month that Modi was using a public holiday to connect with the people. On October 2, that is Gandhi Jayanti, he launched the Swachh Bharat campaign, and on Dussera, he delivered his first radio speech on the government-run All India Radio.
Modi made a day-long visit to Jammu & Kashmir which was hit by floods in September. Addressing troops at Siachen ahead of his visit to the state capital Srinagar, he said all of India was behind them. "As the country's pradhan sewak, I have the opportunity to be with you here. I have come to spend my first Diwali as prime minister with you," he said.
"The nation," Modi said, "sleeps in peace because you are awake and prepared to make every sacrifice."
He said he had come unannounced to the glacier posts but "one does not need to announce arrival when coming to meet one's own."
Pointing out that jawans had done exemplary work during the floods, the PM pointed to the inhospitable conditions at what has often been described as the world's highest battlefield.

Siachen: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent some time on Thursday morning rallying soldiers at Siachen, the world's highest battlefield, where he made a surprise visit as India celebrated the Diwali festival.
"From the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier & with the brave Jawans & Officers of the Armed Forces, I wish all of you a Happy Diwali," he tweeted to the nation.
PM Modi took a special Indian Air Force aircraft to Siachen and was flown by helicopter to the base camp at about 12,000 feet. Accompanied by Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhaag, he made an aerial survey of the glacier before interacting with officers and jawans posted at one of the most inhospitable places on earth.
"I have come to spend my first Diwali as prime minister with you. 125 crore Indians can celebrate Diwali today and go about their lives in comfort because the jawans guard the borders, prepared to make every sacrifice for the nation," PM Modi told the troops.
The Prime Minister said he had come unannounced but "one does not need to announce arrival when coming to meet one's own."
In pictures posted on his twitter account, PM Modi was seen mingling with the jawans, sharing sweets and exchanging gifts with them.
Mr Modi, who took office in May, is the first prime minister to visit Siachen in 10 years.
The visit is being seen as a strong message to Pakistan, which has been pressing for the pullout of troops from the glacier since 2012, when 130 Pakistani soldiers died in an avalanche on their side of the slopes. India has been opposing the demand given the strategic importance of the 71-km glacier, where the army has been posted since 1984.
"If you don't see this glacier, you can't imagine the hostile weather and the circumstances under which our jawans are serving the motherland," PM Modi said.
The soldiers posted here were no less than sages, he wrote in the visitors' book at Siachen before leaving for a visit to flood-hit Srinagar.

Siachen Glacier
The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35.421226N 77.109540E, just northeast of the point NJ9842 where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends. At 76 km (47 mi) long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It falls from an altitude of 5,753 m (18,875 ft) above sea level at its head at Indira Col on the China border down to 3,620 m (11,875 ft) at its terminus. The Siachen Glacier lies immediately south of the great watershed that separates the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent in the extensively glaciated portion of the Karakoram sometimes called the "Third Pole". The glacier lies between the Saltoro Ridge immediately to the west and the main Karakoram range to the east. The Saltoro Ridge originates in the north from the Sia Kangri peak on the China border in the Karakoram range. The crest of the Saltoro Ridge's altitudes range from 5,450 to 7,720 m (17,880 to 25,330 feet). The major passes on this ridge are, from north to south, Sia La at 5,589 m (18,336 ft), Bilafond La at 5,450 m (17,880 ft), and Gyong La at 5,689 m (18,665 ft). The average winter snowfall is more than 1000 cm(35 ft) and temperatures can dip to -50 C (-58 F). Including all tributary glaciers, the Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 km2 (270 sq mi).- published: 12 Oct 2014

Gp Capt Vijayakumar voluntarily retired from the Indian Air Force after a highly decorated and colourful career spread over three decades. The highly accomplished Gp Capt Vijayakumar is a B.Com graduate from Loyola, Chennai and an LLB with a Masters Degree in Industrial Relations & Personnel Management (IRPM) from Nagpur University and a Master of Management Studies from Osmania University. Gp Capt Vijayakumar had held very important assignments in Indian Air Force which included as Director of Financial Planning responsible for Planning and Budgeting of Capital Acquisition of Indian Air Force amounting to Rs.15,000 crores per annum. He also took part in IPKF and Kargil operations. Prior to retirement he was the Financial Advisor to the Air Officer Commanding in Chief of Western Air Command which is responsible for operations in the entire northern sector including J & K and Siachen Glacier. Gp Capt Vijayakumar was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal by the President of India for distinguished service of very high order. He was also awarded Commendation Medallion by the Chief of Air Staff and Air Officer Commanding in Chief on four occasions in recognition of service of high order. Group Captain has deepened MMA’s relationship with its members and Indian Inc. and raised the organisation’s public profile. MMA now attracts top industry leaders and policy makers on its platform. Under his dynamic leadership MMA has won the National Excellence Award of All India Management Association for the year 2008-09 and Best Management Association in India for three years in a row 2010, 2011, 2012 & AIMA’s National Excellence Award for the year 2013. The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35.421226°N 77.109540°E, just northeast of the point NJ9842 where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends. At 76 km (47 mi) long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. He also tweeted that he was wishing the entire country on the occasion "from the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier & with the brave Jawans & Officers." This was the third time in less than a month that Modi was using a public holiday to connect with the people. On October 2, that is Gandhi Jayanti, he launched the Swachh Bharat campaign, and on Dussera, he delivered his first radio speech on the government-run All India Radio. Modi made a day-long visit to Jammu & Kashmir which was hit by floods in September. Addressing troops at Siachen ahead of his visit to the state capital Srinagar, he said all of India was behind them. "As the country's pradhan sewak, I have the opportunity to be with you here. I have come to spend my first Diwali as prime minister with you," he said. "The nation," Modi said, "sleeps in peace because you are awake and prepared to make every sacrifice." He said he had come unannounced to the glacier posts but "one does not need to announce arrival when coming to meet one's own." "From the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier & with the brave Jawans & Officers of the Armed Forces, I wish all of you a Happy Diwali," he tweeted to the nation. PM Modi took a special Indian Air Force aircraft to Siachen and was flown by helicopter to the base camp at about 12,000 feet. Accompanied by Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhaag, he made an aerial survey of the glacier before interacting with officers and jawans posted at one of the most inhospitable places on earth. "I have come to spend my first Diwali as prime minister with you. 125 crore Indians can celebrate Diwali today and go about their lives in comfort because the jawans guard the borders, prepared to make every sacrifice for the nation," PM Modi told the troops. The Prime Minister said he had come unannounced but "one does not need to announce arrival when coming to meet one's own." In pictures posted on his twitter account, PM Modi was seen mingling with the jawans, sharing sweets and exchanging gifts with them. Mr Modi, who took office in May, is the first prime minister to visit Siachen in 10 years. The visit is being seen as a strong message to Pakistan, which has been pressing for the pullout of troops from the glacier since 2012, when 130 Pakistani soldiers died in an avalanche on their side of the slopes. India has been opposing the demand given the strategic importance of the 71-km glacier, where the army has been posted since 1984. "If you don't see this glacier, you can't imagine the hostile weather and the circumstances under which our jawans are serving the motherland," PM Modi said. The soldiers posted here were no less than sages, he wrote in the visitors' book at Siachen before leaving for a visit to flood-hit Srinagar. In 1984, Indian army’s Operation Meghdoot gave India control over the Siachen Glacier located in the Karakoram range, including its tributaries and ever since then both countries have deployed troops there ... Siachen glacier is also the proud owner of the world’s highest helipad, which is again used only by the army to refill their stocks....
