A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck south-west of Invercargill this morning.

GNS Science categorised the intensity of the quake as severe.

The quake was located 105kms west of Snares Island, which is 100kms south-west of Stewart Island, at a depth of 5km.

It was originally recorded as a 4.4, 50kms west of Invercargill but was later reviewed as stronger, and further away.

Geonet duty seismologist Anna Kaiser said there had been a cluster of quakes around the same size in the area, and it was not uncommon.

The coast in the immediate area should not be affected, and the quake itself was too small to cause a larger current or tsunami, she said.
