Kings was an American television drama series which aired on NBC. The series' narrative is loosely based on the Biblical story of King David, but set in a kingdom that culturally and technologically resembles the present-day United States.
Advance showings received mostly positive critical reviews. The Sunday March 15, 2009, premiere placed 4th in network television ratings for that evening. After four episodes aired, NBC moved it to a Saturday slot, but only showed one more episode before pulling the series until summer. The remaining seven episodes were aired on Saturdays in June and July; however, Kings was canceled after failing to find a sufficient audience.
Kings is set in the fictional Kingdom of Gilboa, a modern absolute monarchy. Gilboa is ruled by King Silas Benjamin, who originally formed the united kingdom two decades before from the three warring countries of Gilboa, Carmel, and Selah. He believes that he has been divinely anointed king, and often cites the day when a swarm of Monarch butterflies once landed on his head in the form of "a living crown" which called upon him to form the Monarchy and Kingdom.

[Verse 1:]
I drink the cloudy city rainwater, you can never save my soul. Painted glass on my soul, I don't break it for no one. Your blood runs like a river when your back's turned and hope don't float when it's chokin' on it's last word. Which one would you use to describe this, sick of fightin' everyone around me for silence, sick of tryin' to get inside of your silly blinded vision of what you though life was before you dived in. Take a look at me I'm piggin through my last meal, headin' to the gallows with a smile on my cracked grill and that's real. You can keep your little rap deals cause I don't give a damn about bein king of the crap hill. Stop, and let it fall where the chips lay and take the earth from underneath your fragile pride and kick stand. So when it all clears and the rain clouds fade you can stay with the rest of the skeletons in their grave.
[Chorus:]
This city (yeah) it's really got a hold on you. This city (yeah) it's really got a hold on you. You don't need to fight me off, I'm well on my way. Gonna leave these cobblestones and [?] in the back of my brain. I learned that you don't have a single word left that you can say. Better make me quiver when you wave it like a knife in my face. Your king is dead.
[Verse 2:]
You can change these bricks all day but not a single one will ever get you outta here, take you away. You want a throne that can never be claimed but standing there lookin' like another drone that lost his way. So take the broken crown off power in a kingdom full of fools gold, searchin' for a diamond in a pile full of bruised hopes. You're lookin' at me through those tiny little two holes that lie to you and force you to be blinded when the truth shows. Yeah I guess I'm nothin but a blood drop that fell out of your last black listed number one spot. Coagulating, I'm ready to be released, and how did your palms like the burgandy powdered breeze. How poetic, you all want change but won't let it, get a breath of any answer you decided it was ready to breath. Believe me, that's the nature of the beast. Break his little legs and watch it try to flee, watch it hobble out your aweful line of reach. Turn around and pull the cotton out it's mouth and pour it's heart out in the streets and when all of this is over you can sharpen up your teeth just to smile in the mirror while the rest of you depletes.
[Chrous:]
Ten thousand soldiers came
To take my love away
I turned to stand and fight
But I could not hold her tight... enough
Hold on till the night is done
Stand strong till the battle's won
Don’t you let me fall
My eyes lead me to fear
but I could not leave her here
I marched to face this king
Frozen... my feet keep moving
Hold on till the night is done
Stand strong till the battle's won
Don’t you let me fall
Don’t you let me fall
(Instrumental Bridge)
Oh... (x2)
Hold on till the night is done
Stand strong till the battle's won
Oh... (x4)
“Take your final bow, oh king,”
Sang the streets below.
And I held my love so close to me
See history fade, it's crystal clear
Aurora what you doing here
Buttering the mouths of theives
Shutter speed your bleeding leaves
In gardens in the orient
Liklihood is good and spent
Herod nods beneath the palms
Holds poor baby in his arms
Tunis and Sardinia
The oceans growing hungrier
Beneath these walls we'll sleep tonight
Beneath this sky we'll glide so bright
And kings will come, years will pass
Stars burn cold beneath the glass
And days will glow in distant time
In this storied haze the zephyrs graze
In deserts where the dust storm blows
And lush black swamps where mandrake grows
We're marching laughing to the drum
Waiting for those kings to come
And kings will come and years will pass
Stars burn cold beneath the glass
And days will blow in distant time
In this storied haze the zephyrs graze
An infant with the voice of a crone
In Nebuchanezzars parking zone
Calls out my lord your end is nigh
I didn't mean to make you cry
In deserts where the dust storm blows
And lush black swamps where mandrake grows
We're marching laughing to the drum
Waiting for those kings to come
The circus sun in Nero eyes
The lions and the christians rise
Software sings and hardware hears
You sent me a curse
Left for dead by the waters edge
You're the thorn in my side
I try to dig you out
Full of disgrace
Hate to admit it but lying was worth it to dig you out of my head
(To dig you out of my head)
Are we dust in the wind?
Look at all the things we lack
Running circles in the black
Are we dust in the wind?
Searching for security
Far from where I wanna be
I Tried to forget
Pictures burned in my memory
Keep closing my eyes yo wash the pain away
If I can believe the blind can see
Then God knows the trouble I'm in to dig you out of my head
(To dig you out of my head, head Head)
Are we dust in the wind?
Look at all the things we lack
Running circles in the black
Are we dust in the wind?
Searching for security
Far from where I want to
Far from where I wanna be
Look at all the things you lack (look at all the things you lack)
It's not just talk it's who you are
Look at all the things you left
Deep inside my every wound
I'll dig you out
I'll dig you out
Are we dust in the wind?
Look at all the things we lack
Running circles in the black
Are we dust in the wind?
Searching for security
Far from where I wanna be
Are we dust in the wind?
Look at all the things we lack
Running circles in the black
Are we dust in the wind?
Searching for security
Far from where I wanna
Far from where I wanna be
In the darkest of days
Men become kings and still die of old age
While the children become gods
At last the whole world begins to play
My body is adorned with thorns
King with a crown of thorns
I wash my feet and kiss the ground I'm on
I wash my feet kiss the ground I'm on, I'm on
Jump niggas cuz they thought I was a pawn
But knowin' I'm a king I'm about to get on
This the sirens for the quiet of the storm
Ring that alarm, R-r-ring that alarm
Yo her body was adorn adorned
And I adored her, so much that I had to ignore her
Her body I explored it, like an explor-her
Her first name was Dora, her first name was Dora
I opened up the door and saw
My queen getting raw, getting raw
So like me beatin Resevoir Dog
Had to hit it raw, no not raw dog
I was a, hog, but I don't eat the pork
She was a swine, crippling' my time
On the cast of my pearl, yo she wasn't my girl
This wasn't reality, this wasn't my world
Like Jimi or Kurt before
King with a crown I shall be adored
Even if I have, always been ignored
I was not the norm I will not be ignored
In the darkest of days
Men become kings and still die of old age
While the children become gods
At last the whole world begins to play
Young world this the story of the kings
A nigga couldn't decide should I rap or should I sing
And since God blessed me with my wings
I'm like a lil' nappy-head Bill Russell with the rings, feel me?
Lately globetrottin' through a lotta traps
Friends become rats, I'm talkin Judas in expensive slacks
Fuck em, to tell the truth now I'm over that
Sucker 'ill be suckers, it don't matter that you roll with pack
I steady grab my nuts and you can roll with that
Pardon my back, and the weight on my shoulders black
History's on my side, these niggas hard in they cars
But in the streets they can't look me in the eye
(Look me in the eye, look me in the eye)
(Champagne Champagne)
(Can I get em?)
Stand like a man, move like a legend
Talk but with action, that's how you'll be remembered
The greats learned that humility is a weapon
Sever ties with the part of you too big to learn a lesson
Sit in silence, to fight the mind and try to find the present
Cuz we only get a couple chances to be epic
And I'm connected, like God plugged my headphones
Directly into heaven and told me to go and get em with this
Mic cord, I am, nothing you can tell me
They bark when they talk but they walk like the legless
The purpose of my art, is for people to respect me
I'm not a king I'm a servant to the desires that tempt me
Only way to escape the cage in a valley of roots
Be a mirror to the people when they're searchin for truth
Only way to escape the cage in a valley of roots
Claim the mirror, my people, keep searchin for you
In the darkest of days
Men become kings and still die of old age
While the children become gods
[Hook:]

We're young and divine,
With a knack for a catchy phrase
We'll never divide
Or turn our backs on the ones who prayed
Well we'll travel far
And right from the start
We'll start up the car
And hit the road
We'll drive through the night
Away from the light
And into the sun
Yeah, we say what we want to say
'Cause we're on a throne
We are the gangs of the underground
Stay if you want to stay
Take a piece away
You are, despite of our daze
We lost track of time
But the scenery seems to change
We call it a sign
When the critics begin to pray
Well we'll travel far
And right from the start
We start up the car
And hit the road
We'll drive through the night
Away from the light
And into the sun
Yeah, we say what we want to say
'Cause we're on a throne
We are the gangs of the underground
Stay if you want to stay
Take a piece away
You are, despite of our daze
Yeah, we say what we want to say
'Cause we're on a throne
We are the gangs of the underground
Stay if you want to stay
Take a piece away
You are, despite of our daze
When it goes, yeah it goes, oh oh oh
You can take it or leave it to where we're miles apart
You can make it or break it but everywhere you go
You keep feelin' the beat, yeah, and everyone knows
Young and divine
With a knack for a catchy phrase (Yeah everyone knows)
We'll never divide
Or turn our back on the ones who prayed
We'll travel far
And right from the start
We start up the car
And hit the road
We'll drive through the night
Away from the light

Software sings and hardware hears
We are the products of hate
We are the ones that you blame
Attention is the poison you crave
We are the ones on the edge
We are the ones on the end
Now we're the ones that are taking over
You try to fit this circle in your square but
I'm living outside legalistic handcuffs
You try to tell me that I'm never gonna be enough
That's where you're wrong
And it's driving you mad that I'm free
Lie if you want in your bed of hate
We're not your slaves
We are the kings with a King
Lie if you want in your bed of hate
We're not your slaves
We are the kings with a King
Create your own decree
To seal our fate with a deed
You are the one that's screaming murder
We are the ones you expel
We are the ones you repel
As we're escaping from an execution
You can wear your own chains
You can build your own cage
You can dig your own grave
Their eyes were as a flame
Of fire and on their heads
Were many crowns they had
Names written that no man hath
Their voices were as a sound
Of many waters down and
When I saw them I fell
At their feet dead
Lo thy Kings
My sun became black
As sackcloth of hair and
The moon became as
Blood of the dead
All day snow covered us
Night-time: it was always night
The people on the street were made of meat
Black girl, trucks ran us down
Blue boy...
The people on the sidewalk were traced in chalk
Whale embryos filled your enormous room
Screech-owl kachinas built your spiritual room
We were kings, kings!
Seven strong we came
and Seven we were named
in an empire of irrepressibility
Dancing in the street
with heaven at our feet
in a circle of sustenance
And no one stopped to say
that we'd be gone someday
the reign was now
When no on cared about
finding a way out
the reign was now
was now
was now
was now
Throwing stones across
a river as we walked
a line of bliss, a clockless never neverland
Nothing stopped the dance
nothing stopped the dance
a circle, untouchable
And no one dared to say
maybe we'd fall away
the reign was now
was now
And we were kings
and we were kings
and we were kings...
And no one stopped to say
that we'd be gone someday
the reign was now
When no on cared about
finding a way out
the reign was now
And we were kings
and we were kings...
We danced and we danced
in open fields of our escape
we spun and we won
the day
we danced into the sun
we danced and we danced and we danced
into the sun
into the sun
into the sun
Well please, please, oh please
I'm beggin' on my knees
Put one in the cup
I got a fatal disease
Could you help me get back on my feet?
Why don't you give me something you don't need?
Oh girl, I won't ask for your love
But if you show me some love
I'm gonna sing you a song
Going to streetlight circle my home
I'm not a king of the world
But I'm a king of the boat
And I'm falling asleep
To escape this dream
Well they call me crazy
They say I'm alone
I'm not a king of the world
But I'm a king of the streets
I'm gonna rattle your bones
Don't call me lazy
Cause I'm a dangerous man
I'm not a king of the world
But I'm a king of the streets
I guess I'm good as dead
Well I am the pharmacist
I am the dirty fiend
I've got the coldest kiss
You are embarrassed of me
I've got blood on my shoes from another man
I can't walk
Here we're sleeping
But please don't tell them this
There's no mercy in their treatment
Mercy, mercy, mercy
We take the pills
Take the pills
Mercy, mercy, mercy
It's twice the thrill
And I'm falling asleep
To escape this dream
They call me crazy
They say I'm alone
I'm not a king of the world
But I'm a king of the streets
I'm gonna rattle your bones
Don't call me lazy
Cause I'm a dangerous man
I'm not a king of the world
But I'm a king of the streets
I guess I'm good as dead
Mercy, mercy, mercy
We take the pills
Take the pills
Mercy, mercy, mercy
Lean back and take the pills
Mercy, mercy, mercy
We take the pills
Take the pills
Mercy, mercy, mercy
Lean back and take the pills
And I'm falling asleep
To escape this dream
They call me crazy
They say I'm alone
I'm not a king of the world
But I'm a king of the streets
I'm gonna rattle your bones
Don't call me lazy
Cause I'm a dangerous man
I'm not a king of the world
But I'm a king of the streets
Now they lay his body down, sad old men who run this town
I still recall the way he led the charge and saved the day
Blue blood and rain, I can hear the bugle playin'
We seen the last of good King Richard
Ring out the past his name lives on, and on
Roll out the bones and raise up your pitcher
Raise up your glass to good King John
While he plundered far and wide all his starving children cried
And though we sung his fame we all went hungry just the same
He meant to shine to the end of the line
We seen the last of good King Richard
Ring out the past his name lives on, and on
Roll out the bones and raise up your pitcher
Raise up your glass to good King John
And though we sung his fame we all went hungry just the same
He meant to shine to the end of the line
We seen the last of good King Richard
Ring out the past his name lives on, and on
Roll out the bones and raise up your pitcher
Raise up your glass to good King John
Raise up your glass to good King John
You know the guy who gets his beauty tips from Maxim
And talks to his bros before he takes any action
And claims that your passion trumps his need for sex
But leaves you if you don't put out the day after next
He's got his ego on his chest, hat with the sticker on
Standin on a chessboard are the only bigger pawns
Loves nothing more than nut pumping giving orders
And thinks a big man but he packs a roll of quarters
Makes narcissism look humble by inspection
And gets off by whacking it in front of his reflection
Sensitive when you're alone, an asshole in public
Only you know what he means to say and doesn't
Jealous when you hurt his pride by talking to the other guys
Only lie he told you's when he said he never lies
He cries in your arms when you say it ain't workin
And tells you that you never understood him as a person
[Chorus:]
He's a great big douche, but you love him just the same
Because you're afraid of finding any change
You know the girl who gets her beauty tips from Cosmo
And leads you on at first then wants to take it slow
And if you don't slow your roll will leave you in an instant
Back together with her ex though she claims that she isn't
Drives a better car than you can ever afford
While you plug along bored in an 86 Ford
And claims that masturbation's something only for hos
Til you find a wardrobe stowed with lube and dildos
Slaps your mouth shut if you ever mention breakup
And goes two face with no makeup to make her face up
And claims trust is something that you earn in the end
Then you walk in on her in your bed with your friend
Hot and she knows it and acts like she don't
And questions your manhood when she says that she won't
She walks all over you and you worship that ground
No hope for your lost balls, they'll never be found
[Chorus:]
She's a great big witch, but you love her just the same
Because you're afraid of finding any change
You know the kid that sat in the back of the class
And was shy to grab ass at the middle school dance
And he rarely took a chance out of fear of rejection
And turned to words and music just to find some protection
A nice guy that always had girls as friends
Never as girlfriends, though he would pretend
Fashion tips from Goodwill, chivalry from a single mom
So if he didn't treat women well then she would break his arm
Daydreamed about meeting a queen, but missed the obvious
Common sense to be her king he simply needed confidence
Until that day came, he came on his own
Rock hard enough to turn Medusa to stone
But now he's grown, now he's boned, now he sits upon a throne
Overcompensating for what he's never owned
He wonders if his lovers will ever be his friend
And he's become the asshole he's always condemned
[Chorus:]
He's an imposter, and it seems he'll stay the same
All day snow covered us
Night-time: it was always night
The people on the street were made of meat
Black girl, trucks ran us down
Blue boy...
The people on the sidewalk were traced in chalk
Whale embryos filled your enormous room
Screech-owl kachinas built your spiritual room
We were kings, kings!
We were kings, kings!
Now they lay his body down
Sad old men who run this town
I still recall the way
He led the charge and saved the day
Blue blood and rain
I can hear the bugle playin'
CHORUS:

Ring out the past his name lives on
Roll out the bones and raise up your pitcher
Raise up your glass to Good King John

To the end of the line
