Dylan Akio Smith and Kris Elgstrand's slyly funny, absurdist Doppelganger Paul is a comedy about alienation, plagiarism and identity in an increasingly fragmented world. The hero, a fiercely lonely, would be writer named Karl (Tygh Runyan) is convinced that Paul (Brad Dryborough), the last man he saw before a near death experience, is his doppelganger --even though they could hardly be more dissimilar. Although it's never explicitly asked, Doppelganger Paul constantly poses the question: in a fragmented world, is any sense of belonging so valuable we'll give up anything to hold on to it?
In his classic 1979 pop-culture critique The Culture of Narcissism, author Christopher Lasch argued that we had entered an age in which personality was so ill-defined and unmoored that it was no longer recognizable in the traditional sense. As a result, people accept fragmented or bloated identities in a desperate effort to define themselves. Dylan Akio Smith and Kris Elgstrand's slyly funny Doppelgänger Paul updates Lasch's thesis for our own era of faux celebrities and fake autobiographies.
The hero, Karl (Tygh Runyan), is a fiercely lonely would-be writer who has just had a near-death experience and is now fixated on the last person he saw before blacking out: Paul (Brad Dryborough), a frustrated and equally alienated former copy editor whom Karl believes to be his exact double. After a series of comically polite and solicitous notes, the two arrange to meet. It doesn't exactly go swimmingly, but Paul does agree to look over Karl's twenty-thousand-page manuscript, entitled A Book about How Much I Hate Myself. When months pass and he hears nothing, Karl moves on — until he discovers other people promoting a book curiously like his on a local television chat show. Determined to expose the plagiarists, Karl demands that Paul drive him to Portland to intercept the imposters on their book tour.
Daft and goofy, and presented in a low-key, floating style in which the most ludicrous events seem plausible, Doppelgänger Paul has the bemused, absurdist lilt of an American indie movie of the nineties, and shares some of the same thematic concerns. (No one in the film is capable of engaging in what might be deemed a normal interaction with another human being.) The film's aesthetic is comforting, but suspiciously so. There are darker forces at work here, evident in the lead performances, especially that of Runyan, whose Karl is always nearing his boiling point. Although it's never explicitly asked, Doppelgänger Paul constantly raises the question: in a fragmented world, is a sense of belonging so valuable that we'll give up anything to hold on to it?

Carol, an emotionally repressed woman, loses friends and alienates people when she begins singing songs she wrote about people she knows. But she unexpectedly inspires her boss, to whom she dedicates the song Asshole Dave, to attempt to reignite his dream of becoming a rock star.
Carol, an emotionally bottled up woman, begins writing and singing songs she wrote about people she knows as a sort of therapy. Her songs alienate her friends and co-workers except for her boss, Dave. Dave fires Carol with a large severance package so she can pursue her music, and then Dave quits his job so he can chase rock star dreams with her. The two misfits begin working with an unusual record producer, Silent G, but this form of self-expression might not be as cathartic as Carol had hoped.

Val Kilmer
Val Edward Kilmer (born December 31, 1959) is an American actor. Originally a stage actor, Kilmer became popular in the mid-1980s after a string of appearances in comedy films, starting with Top Secret! (1984), then the cult classic Real Genius (1985), as well as the blockbuster action film Top Gun (1986) and the swords and sorcery fantasy film Willow (1988).
Some of his other notable film roles include Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991), Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993), armed robber Chris Shiherlis in Heat (1995), Bruce Wayne / Batman in Batman Forever (1995), Simon Templar in The Saint (1997), astronaut Robby Gallagher in Red Planet (2000), and a meth-using informant in The Salton Sea (2002).
Early life and education
Kilmer was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Gladys (née Ekstadt) and Eugene Kilmer, an aerospace equipment distributor and real estate developer. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley with his two siblings, older brother Mark and younger brother Wesley (1962–1977), who died at 15 due to an epileptic seizure in a swimming pool. His parents divorced when he was nine years old. His father died while Val was filming Tombstone. Kilmer's grandfather was a gold miner in New Mexico, near the border with Arizona; The poet Joyce Kilmer is a distant cousin of Kilmer. His mother was of Swedish descent. His father's ancestry included English, Scots-Irish, French, German, and Cherokee Native American.

MarVista Entertainment is an American independent entertainment distribution and production studio, based in Los Angeles.
History
MarVista was founded in 2003 by Fernando and Joseph Szew as a commission-based distributor of third party programming. As of 2015, MarVista had expanded its library of 250 hours of licensed programming to over 2,500 hours of programming to television broadcasters and other global distribution channels in its 125 territories, including video on demand (VOD), subscription video on demand (SVOD), and broadband platforms through MarVista Digital Entertainment (MVDE).
MVDE was launched in 2014 to handle distribution and licensing of the company's digital content in North America.
Beginning after acquiring capital investments in 2011, the company also began creating its own television and feature film content.

Tygh Runyan
Tygh Runyan (born June 13, 1976) is an American/Canadian actor and musician.
Life and career
Runyan was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. His father is a retired instructor of Environmental Technology at Kwantlen Polytechnic in Vancouver and his mother is a poet. As a teen, Runyan studied at Emily Carr College of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art and Design) at the same time as he was getting into acting.
Runyan was nominated for a Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award for his work in Various Positions.
As a musician, Runyan has been a member of The Beans and The Awkward Stage.
In 2008 he married Sarah Lind.

Carol, an emotionally repressed woman, loses friends and alienates people when she begins singing songs she wrote about people she knows. But she unexpectedly inspires her boss, to whom she dedicates the song Asshole Dave, to attempt to reignite his dream of becoming a rock star. Carol, an emotionally bottled up woman, begins writing and singing songs she wrote about people she knows as a sort of therapy. Her songs alienate her friends and co-workers except for her boss, Dave. The hero, Karl (Tygh Runyan), is a fiercely lonely would-be writer who has just had a near-death experience and is now fixated on the last person he saw before blacking out: Paul (Brad Dryborough), a frustrated and equally alienated former copy editor whom Karl believes to be his exact double. After a series of comically polite and solicitous notes, the two arrange to meet. It doesn't exactly go swimmingly, but Paul does agree to look over Karl's twenty-thousand-page manuscript, entitled A Book about How Much I Hate Myself. When months pass and he hears nothing, Karl moves on — until he discovers other people promoting a book curiously like his on a local television chat show. Determined to expose the plagiarists, Karl demands that Paul drive him to Portland to intercept the imposters on their book tour.
Daft and goofy, and presented in a low-key, floating style in which the most ludicrous events seem plausible, Doppelgänger Paul has the bemused, absurdist lilt of an American indie movie of the nineties, and shares some of the same thematic concerns. (No one in the film is capable of engaging in what might be deemed a normal interaction with another human being.) The film's aesthetic is comforting, but suspiciously so. There are darker forces at work here, evident in the lead performances, especially that of Runyan, whose Karl is always nearing his boiling point. Songs She Wrote About People She Knows - Official Trailer - MarVista Entertainment
Carol, an emotionally repressed woman, loses friends and alienates people when she begins singing songs she wrote about people she knows. But she unexpectedly inspires her boss, to whom she dedicates the song Asshole Dave, to attempt to reignite his dream of becoming a rock star. Carol, an emotionally bottled up woman, begins writing and singing songs she wrote about people she knows as a sort of therapy. Her songs alienate her friends and co-workers except for her boss, Dave. Dave fires Carol with a large severance package so she can pursue her music, and then Dave quits his job so he can chase rock star dreams with her. The hero, Karl (Tygh Runyan), is a fiercely lonely would-be writer who has just had a near-death experience and is now fixated on the last person he saw before blacking out: Paul (Brad Dryborough), a frustrated and equally alienated former copy editor whom Karl believes to be his exact double. After a series of comically polite and solicitous notes, the two arrange to meet. It doesn't exactly go swimmingly, but Paul does agree to look over Karl's twenty-thousand-page manuscript, entitled A Book about How Much I Hate Myself. When months pass and he hears nothing, Karl moves on — until he discovers other people promoting a book curiously like his on a local television chat show. Determined to expose the plagiarists, Karl demands that Paul drive him to Portland to intercept the imposters on their book tour.
Daft and goofy, and presented in a low-key, floating style in which the most ludicrous events seem plausible, Doppelgänger Paul has the bemused, absurdist lilt of an American indie movie of the nineties, and shares some of the same thematic concerns. (No one in the film is capable of engaging in what might be deemed a normal interaction with another human being.) The film's aesthetic is comforting, but suspiciously so. There are darker forces at work here, evident in the lead performances, especially that of Runyan, whose Karl is always nearing his boiling point. Carol, an emotionally repressed woman, loses friends and alienates people when she begins singing songs she wrote about people she knows. But she unexpectedly inspires her boss, to whom she dedicates the song Asshole Dave, to attempt to reignite his dream of becoming a rock star.
Carol, an emotionally bottled up woman, begins writing and singing songs she wrote about people she knows as a sort of therapy. Her songs alienate her friends and co-workers except for her boss, Dave. Dave fires Carol with a large severance package so she can pursue her music, and then Dave quits his job so he can chase rock star dreams with her. The two misfits begin working with an unusual record producer, Silent G, but this form of self-expression might not be as cathartic as Carol had hoped.
