Johnston's Army of Tennessee withdrew toward Atlanta in the face of successive flanking maneuvers by Sherman's group of armies. In July, the Confederate president replaced Johnston with the more aggressive John Bell Hood, who began challenging the Union Army in a series of damaging frontal assaults. Hood's army was eventually besieged in Atlanta and the city fell on September 2, hastening the end of the war.
The Atlanta Campaign followed the Union victory in the Battles for Chattanooga in November 1863; Chattanooga was known as the "Gateway to the South", and its capture opened that gateway. After Ulysses S. Grant was promoted to general-in-chief of all Union armies, he left his favorite lieutenant, Sherman, in charge of the Western armies. Grant's strategy was to apply pressure against the Confederacy in several coordinated offensives. While he, George G. Meade, Benjamin Butler, Franz Sigel, George Crook, and William W. Averell advanced in Virginia against Robert E. Lee, and Nathaniel Banks attempted to capture Mobile, Alabama, Sherman was assigned the mission of defeating Johnston's army, capturing Atlanta, and striking through Georgia and the Confederate heartland.
Atlanta began as a settlement located at the terminus of a railroad line, and it was incorporated in 1845. Today, the city is a major business city and the primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States (via highway, railroad, and air), with Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport being the world's busiest airport since 1998. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Atlanta as an "alpha(-) world city." With a gross domestic product of US$270 billion, Atlanta's economy ranks 15th among world cities and sixth in the nation. The city is a center for services, finance, information technology, government, and higher education. Metro Atlanta contains the country's third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies, and is the world headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company, Turner Broadcasting, The Home Depot, AT&T Mobility, UPS, and Delta Air Lines. As of 2010, Atlanta is the seventh most visited city in the United States, with over 35 million visitors per year.

Howard, on the other hand, was a soft-spoken teetotaler whose devoutness had earned him the sobriquet, “the Christian Soldier.” Fate thrust these two very different men together in the spring of 1863, when Howard assumed command of the XI Corps under Ho

On October 10, 2014 Mark Bradley talked to the Chicago Civil War Roundtable about
“When East Meets West: Joe Hooker, O. O. Howard, and the Atlanta Campaign“ to the Chicago Civil War Round table.
Union generals Joseph Hooker and Oliver O. Howard were the Civil War’s true Odd Couple. “Fighting Joe” Hooker was brash, blustering, and profane, and he had a reputation as a hard-drinking ladies’ man. Howard, on the other hand, was a soft-spoken teetotaler whose devoutness had earned him the sobriquet, “the Christian Soldier.” Fate thrust these two very different men together in the spring of 1863, when Howard assumed command of the XI Corps under Hooker, the commander of the Army of the Potomac. In the Battle of Chancellorsville, Howard’s XI Corps was routed, paving the way for Confederate general Robert E. Lee’s greatest victory. Hooker blamed Howard for the defeat at Chancellorsville and never forgave him. Just two months later, Hooker dared President Abraham Lincoln to replace him while he was pursuing Lee’s army into Pennsylvania and promptly lost his command. A few days after that, Howard’s XI Corps was routed yet again, this time through the streets of Gettysburg. In July 1863, the prospects for Hooker and Howard appeared bleak indeed.
That fall, however, Hooker received command of two corps from the Army of the Potomac being sent to rescue the Union Army of the Cumberland, which was trapped at Chattanooga, Tennessee, after suffering a humiliating defeat in the Battle of Chickamauga. One of the units in Hooker’s command happened to be Howard’s XI Corps. In effect, the transfer provided Hooker and Howard with a fresh start and an opportunity for advancement in the Union armies of the Western Theater. Historian Mark Bradley will discuss how these two generals adapted to their new situation and how they exploited their opportunities in the West, particularly in the Atlanta Campaign. He will also note how their experiences underscore the differences between the war in the East and the West.
Mark Bradley is a historian with the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, DC. He received his BA in History from North Carolina State University and his MA and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His publications include Last Stand In The Carolinas: The Battle Of Bentonville, This Astounding Close: The Road To Bennett Place, and Bluecoats And Tar Heels: Soldiers And Civilians In Reconstruction North Carolina.

Oakland cemetery exemplifies the 19th century "rural garden" movement that was a backlash against the busy, overcrowded city cemeteries. Characteristic of these garden cemeteries are shady trees, flowers and pathways that were meant to be enjoyed by the living as well as provide a beautiful, final resting place for loved ones. Oakland cemetery started in the 1850's with an original 6 acres of land
purchased by the City fathers. Oakland was renamed in 1872 due to the large number of oak and magnolia trees growing on its grounds. The cemetery is best known for being

As a result, throughout the past three and a half decades, Iranian women have been subjected to countless acts of violence and injustice.

The Civil War and the Oakland Cemetery - Atlanta, Georgia
Learn more about the American Civil War at http://www.americancivilwar.ca
Oakland cemetery exemplifies the 19th century "rural garden" movement that was a backlash against the busy, overcrowded city cemeteries. Characteristic of these garden cemeteries are shady trees, flowers and pathways that were meant to be enjoyed by the living as well as provide a beautiful, final resting place for loved ones. Oakland cemetery started in the 1850's with an original 6 acres of land
purchased by the City fathers. Oakland was renamed in 1872 due to the large number of oak and magnolia trees growing on its grounds. The cemetery is best known for being the final resting place for over 3,000 Confederate soldiers who were disinterred from nearby battlefields.
By the early 1870's, the cemetery had expanded to 48 acres due to the pressures of the Civil War. With the onset of the Civil War, the City added land to bury soldiers who died in local hospitals. Atlanta hospitals overflowed with men wounded in battles and the largest number of wartime hospitals were within half a mile of the cemetery.
As deaths mounted, the land around the cemetery was secured as a Confederate burial ground. After the war, several thousand soldiers who had fallen in the Atlanta campaign were moved from battlefield graves to Oakland. The cemetery reached its present size by 1867.
Confederate Memorial Grounds
This section is the final resting place for approximately 6,900 Confederate soldiers including 3,000 unknowns. When you enter from the main gate, the massive spire of the Confederate Obelisk provides an orienting landmark. The 65-foot monument was made of Stone Mountain granite and dedicated on April 26, 1874 by the Atlanta Ladies Memorial Association. For many years it was the tallest structure in the city. Also included are the headstones of 16 Union soldiers who died in local hospitals. Another area of marked Confederate graves lies along Oakland's southern wall.
Lion of the Confederacy
To the Northeast of the Obelisk, lies the most famous marker being the massive "Lion of Atlanta" guarding approximately 3,000 graves of unknown Confederate soldiers disinterred from the battlefield. The Confederate section of Oakland is home to an estimated 6,900 burials, of which about 3,000 are unknown. The Lion was modelled after the Swiss "Lion of Lucerne"and was carved by T. M. Brady in 1894 from the largest block of marble quarried from Tate, Georgia. The dying lion rests on the Confederate flag they followed and "guards their dust," in the words of a commemorative poem.
To the Northwest, very close to the obelisk itself, are buried four Confederate generals, John B. Gordon, Lucius J. Gartrell, Clement A. Evans, and William Wright. Two historical markers in the cemetery explain its connection with important events during the Civil War.
The Great Locomotive Chase
The first is the site where seven spies of the Great Locomotive Chase were hanged near the south-east corner of the cemetery. On April 12, 1862, Union soldiers known as Andrews Raiders, led by civilian scout James J. Andrews, commandeered a train at present-day Kennesaw, GA and raced north to Ringgold, GA to cut telegraph lines doing as much damage as possible while pursued by other locomotives. They were captured and condemned as spies. Seven were hanged and temporarily interred in Oakland cemetery before being moved to the National Cemetery at Chattanooga. Andrews was tried in Chattanooga and found guilty. He was executed by hanging on June 7 in Atlanta. Andrews was hanged in downtown Atlanta and there is a plaque marking this historic event at the corner of 3rd Street and Juniper Street. On June 18, the seven others who had been convicted as spies were returned to Atlanta also hanged.
Confederate Headquarters
The second historical marker is north of the Bell Tower where a two-story farmhouse stood in the summer of 1864. It was a headquarters for Confederate commander John B. Hood during the Battle of Atlanta, which was fought to the east of the cemetery on July 22. In 1976, Oakland was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Oakland cemetery provides a look at the rich and vibrant Civil War past of the city of Atlanta and provides guided walking tours, twilight tours, and even boats a visitors centre and museum shop. It is an important part of Altanta's history and a must-see stop for any serious Civil War aficionado.

Welcome to Austin, home to nearly 900,000 people. The capital of Texas attracts a number of young, talented university students, which has prompted a good-natured culture war between the newcomers and the city’s longtime residents. So far, the latter group seems to be winning, thanks to their dedication to the Keep Austin Weird campaign. You’ll find elements of this movement throughout the city in the shape of various art installations, eclectic eateries, and murals.
An Austin tour means an adventure in the Live Music Capital of the World, home to festivals celebrating all kinds of tunes. Whether you’re here to listen to blues, country, or a little bit of rockabilly, you’re bound to find exactly what your musical palette desires in this quirky town.
Austin is proud of its citizens, and throughout the city you’ll find monuments of ranchers, prominent musicians, and Civil War heroes. Many of these monuments are located in Austin’s numerous parks, making it an excellent place to get in touch with nature. If relaxing by a fountain seems a little too bohemian for you, visit South Congress Avenue. “SoCo” is a veritable paradise anyone who loves vintage threads and just the right amount of “weird” that makes Austin unique.
Don’t worry about keeping yourself fed – as you’ll notice in your Austin sightseeing adventure, you’ll find a food truck on every street, and bistros, cafes, and restaurants just waiting for you to dive in and sample their culinary offerings.
Whether you’re here for music, food, or to take in the local art scene, you’ll find no shortage of things to do in downtown Austin. Have you been to any of its famous festivals?

RE: Coalition of Iranian Human Rights Activists Initiates Mobile Billboard Campaign in Washington D.C. in Support of Iranian Women’s Rights Movement
November 18, 2014, Washington, D.C. – Since the inception of the Islamic Republic (February 11, 1979), the Government of Iran and its instrumentalities have worked systematically to institutionalize oppression of, and discrimination against, Iranian women. As a result, throughout the past three and a half decades, Iranian women have been subjected to countless acts of violence and injustice.
Women’s rights issues in Iran have garnered unique focus in the last few months due to certain recent events, including the execution of Reyhaneh Jabbari, a 26-year old woman sentenced to death for killing a man who attempted to rape her. Also in recent weeks, several Iranian women were brutalized in a series of public acid attacks carried out as part of an intimidation campaign intended to achieve strict compliance with the Islamic Republic’s laws regarding female dress and appearance. While the affiliations of the perpetrators of these acid attacks are not clear, such events are another reminder of the tragic reality of life for women in Iran: that the Government of Iran has established, and continues to promote, a social and legal environment within which women are the targets of immeasurable oppression and discrimination based on their gender. To make matters worse, where such oppression and discrimination are not matters of formal policy but occur outside the bounds of Iranian law, the Islamic Republic routinely fails to provide, or actively denies, Iranian women the protection that is their most basic human right, leaving Iranian women all the more vulnerable to both official and unofficial acts of mistreatment and abuse.
On Wednesday, November 19, 2014, in recognition of the dire state of human rights in Iran, and with particular attention to the constant theme of injustice against women in Iran, a coalition of Iranian human rights activists from a variety of organizations (the “Coalition”) and Justice Through Music (JTM) will carry out a mobile billboard campaign in Washington, D.C. Trucks depicting billboards with images and messages designed to raise awareness of, and draw support for, the women’s rights movement in Iran, as well as broader concerns regarding human rights in Iran, will travel through the capital city’s streets.
The Coalition acknowledges and supports the demands of the Iranian people that their human rights be both respected and safeguarded by their government. The Coalition hopes that the American public will stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their continued struggle for human rights and will urge American leaders and policymakers to continue to focus on human rights issues in Iran, irrespective of the outcome of negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

CWRT Meeting October 2014 Mark Bradley - Hooker, O.O. Howard and the Atlanta Campaign

CAU Experience Day#1
CAU Experience Day#1
CAU Experience begins bright and early and I was able to record memorable moments featuring newly found friends, surroundings, OGs (Orientation Guides), and other footage. The video gives a brief look into the CAU spirit that so many of my fellow Panthers and I possess. For the support, unity, and education Clark Atlanta University provides is worthy of all appraisal. My Isabella T. Jenkins Honors Program Luncheon is also included in this video followed by the St. Jude's " Stay Up for Good" Community Service Event and Letter Writing Campaign. The concluding event, St. Jude's " Stay Up for Good" Community Service Event and Letter Writing Campaign, was CAU's fundraiser to contribute to St. Jude's patients, family, friends, faculty, staff, and administration's mission to not have to charge for the treatments and accommodations they provide for their patients.
