Okeh Records - Sippie Wallace - Dead Drunk Blues 1927 Sippie Wallace (born as Beulah Thomas, November 1, 1898 – November 1, 1986) was an American singer-songwriter. Her early career in local tent shows gained her the billing "The Texas Nightingale". Between 1923 and 1927, she recorded over 40 songs for Okeh Records, many written by herself or her brothers, George and Hersal Thomas. Her accompanists included Louis Armstrong, Johnny Dodds, Sidney Bechet, King Oliver, and Clarence Williams. Among the top female blues vocalists of her era, Wallace ranked with Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter, and Bessie Smith. In the 1930s, she left show business to become a church organist, singer, and choir director in Detroit, and performed secular music only sporadically until the 1960s, when she resumed her career. Wallace was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1982, and was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 1993. Wallace was born in Plum Bayou, Arkansas, one of 13 children, and later moved with her family as a child to Houston, Texas. In her youth Wallace sang and played the piano in Shiloh Baptist Church, where her father was a deacon, but in the evenings the children took to sneaking out to tent shows. By her mid-teens, they were playing in those tent shows. By performing in the various Texas shows, she built a solid following as a spirited blues singer. Wallace came from a musical family: her brother George W. Thomas became a notable pianist, bandleader, composer, and music publisher; her other brother Hersal Thomas was a pianist and composer; and her niece (George's daughter) Hociel Thomas was a pianist and composer. In March 1986, following a concert in Germany at Burghausen Jazz Festival, she suffered a severe stroke, was hospitalized, returned to the US, and died on her 88th birthday at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She is buried at Trinity Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.

This legendary recording was first issued as a 78 rpm disc by OKeh Records in 1923. The Okeh Laughing Record is a recording of a man and woman laughing while a musician plays a funereal trumpet solo. It is so outrageous (and contagious) that you cannot help but laugh yourself when you hear it. My understanding is that this particular record has been pressed, purchased and enjoyed in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. The OKeh label is one of the very first recording labels that existed - it was launched by Mr. Otto K. E. Heinemann in 1916 (his initials formed the name "OKeh"), and became famous for it's recordings of ethnic and race artists. It continued until 1935 or so, and Columbia Records purchased it and revived it in 1940 through 1946. In 1951, Columbia revived the label once again as an outlet for Rhythm and Blues recordings (6800 series) - and in 1952, re-released the OKeh Laughing Record once again as a 78 record (6925) and a 45 rpm record (4-6925). The flip of the record had Bob Atcher, a country singer from the 1940s singing "I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes" - which had Mr. Atcher "sobbing" while he was singing (!) - the total opposite of "laughing". Enjoy this crazy bit of nostalgia from early in the 20th century. THEVICTROLAGUY@GMAIL.COM

Originally published February 14, 2005. New York City. Music by Cab Calloway, Harlem. Note from Rocketboom's creator, Andrew Baron ( http://rocketboom.com | http://dembot.com ] In the spirit of Rocketboom approaching its 10-year anniversary (launched October 26, 2004), welcome to the definitive “Best-Of” compilation, including videos which have never been seen on YouTube, or anywhere. Some videos will be remastered, some will include behind the scenes footage, some will include producer notes or contextual information and others will appear as if they were recorded on a potato. In 2004, the format for Rocketboom was efficient, effective and exciting as a means of delivering news stories online. That was pre-video iPod (i.e pre-portable video), pre-YouTube, pre-iPhone, pre-Twitter and pre-Facebook-era. Today? I’m not sure the eponymous Rocketboom news show with a keyboard and map is as effective as it once was for a rundown of the daily news though many of the staple Rocketboom content design qualities continue to hold their weight. If you are interested in reading more about this topic, please visit: http://dembot.com/?p=631 With regards to the full set of archives on the Rocketboom website, especially the first 7 or 8 years, you’ll find what I believe is the only, if not most extensive daily historical record of internet culture presented in video form. All videos and comments (including YouTube comments) have been preserved and will continue to exist on the rocketboom.com site. Thank you to the hundreds upon hundreds of people who contributed directly to the Rocketboom show over the years. I’ll never forget the day Amanda and I walked out of 30 Rock from a blunt $15 Million offer to buy Rocketboom, one which went in one ear and right out the other. For my mission with Rocketboom from day one was always about a rally for the democratization of the moving image over any other value. It has been a highlight of my life to participate with the energy of so many others from around the world who understood the cultural importance of tearing down the seemingly invincible control over the video medium. Avalon blues - The complete 1928 okeh recordings (full album)
A typing course set to metronomic music! Recorded in September 1925 by Okeh, probably in Chicago. Each of the 12 sides features a different tempo, increasing...
The Original Dixieland Jazz Band, who billed themselves "The Creators of Jazz", have long been been dismissed as the White guys who copied African-American music, and called it their own. There is a lot of truth to that statement, but on the other hand, The Original Dixieland Jazz Band's recordings still hold their own unique charm, over 80 years after their initial release. However unfair and indicative of the racism of the era, the record "Livery Stable Blues", coupled with "Dixie Jass Band One Step" became the first Jazz record ever released on February 26, 1917 for the Victor Talking Machine Company. It was wildly successful. Its release signaled the beginning of the Jazz age and helped define the wild, exuberent era we call the "Roaring Twenties". The Original Dixieland Jazz Band had recorded for Columbia in January 1917, but the session was unsuccessful and the band had to come back and re-record the songs, thus the release of the Columbia sides did not come about until after the amazing success of the Victor records. The group had formed in New Orleans, all of the musicians had played in Papa Jack Laine's Reliance Brass Band at one time or another. In 1916 the band moved from New Orleans to Chicago, just like so many of the African-American and Creole musicians from that city. In Chicago, they played a season at the Booster Club under the name of Stein's Dixie Jass Band. At the beginning of the following year the band ditched Stein and moved to New York where, on the recommendation of Al Jolson, they landed a gig at Reisenweber's Café on Columbus Circle and 58th Street, a fashionable restaurant and night-spot. The band created quite a stir and Columbia rushed to record the band only two weeks after they had arrived in the city. The band was an immediate success, with their wacky stage antics, like wearing top hats that spelled out "Dixie", playing the trombone's slide with the foot, and so on. The band's slogan was "Untuneful Harmonists Playing Peppery Melodies", and their leader Nick La Rocca and cornet player delighted in stirring up the press, describing themselves as musical anarchists and coining fun statements like "Jazz is the assassination of the melody, it's the slaying of syncopation". After the Reisenweber's Café engagement end the band played at the Alamo Cafe (148th Street) and the College Inn at Coney Island. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band went on to record and play in London, producing 20 tracks for Columbia, including another big hit, Soudan. They returned to America in July of 1920. They signed a new record contract with Okeh, but the public began to tire of them and they never regained the sales or popularity of their initial success. The group broke up in 1925 after La Rocca suffered a nervous breakdown. The surviving members briefly re-formed in 1936 and recorded some sides for Victor. In 1940 the band re-formed yet again, but this time without La Rocca and recorded six sides for Bluebird and played up until 1940. Eddie Edwards formed a version of the band that recorded a V-Disc during World War II and for Commodore Records in 1945 and 1946. Tony Sbarbaro was the only other original member to perform on those sessions.

'Liryka śpiącego' from "AURA" 2015 / OKeh Records/Sony Music Entertainment/ RGG Łukasz Ojdana - piano Maciej Garbowski - double bass Krzysztof Gradziuk - drums Since the year 2001 the RGG trio has been more and more often identified with the European taste of improvised music, performed by the piano trio. In 2013 after 12 years od RGG’s existence the pianist Przemysław Raminiak was replaced by Łukasz Ojdana, a young talented artist, who made the trio breathe deeper. The name RGG is no longer a short of the musicians‘ surnames, but it became a mark, thanks to the equal engagement of the artists in the musical creation. We are sure, that the RGG’s audience will never be disappointed. 14th of April, 2015 is the release date of the latest album of the trio entitled “Aura“, whose publisher is a prestigious label OKeh Records and Sony Music Entertainment. The origins of this label date back to the year 1918, when it was created by Otto K.E. Heinemann. The historic recordings signed OKeh are endorsed by the names: Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Erroll Garner, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ahmad Jamal. In the current catalogue the outstanding artists are: Sonny Rollins, Branford Marsalis, Dave Holland, Bill Frisell, Nils Peter Molvaer, Jeff Ballard, John Medeski, David Sanborn, Michel Camilo, The Bad Plus. The Artists – music ambassadors of the personalities, which significantly influenced the development of the jazz idiom in contemporary musical culture of the world. The seventh album in the trio’s discography is also a publishing debut on the international stage. Thus, the trio joined the exclusive team of Polish jazz artists, whose work has been recognized internationally. www.rggtrio.com www.okeh-records.com zdjęcia i montaż - Artur Dusza produkcja - Piotr Rajowski

By Marv Goldberg Based on an interview with Reese Palmer, Marvin Gaye was a member of this group. A Hey Little School Girl Conductor – Ellas McDanielWritten-By – McDaniel*, Ames*, Palmer* B Wyatt Earp Conductor – Joe ShermanWritten By – LarsenWritten-By – McDaniel*, Palmer* Credits Baritone Vocals [Uncredited] – James Nolan (2), Marvin Gaye Bass Vocals [Uncredited] – Chester Simmons Lead Guitar [Uncredited] – Bo Diddley Lead Vocals [Uncredited] – Reese Palmer Maracas [Uncredited] – Jerome Green Producer – Bo Diddley Marquees were from the East Capitol Dwellings of Washington, D.C.: Reese Palmer (first tenor), Marvin Gay (second tenor/baritone; he'd change the spelling to "Gaye" later on, when he became a soloist), James Nolan (second tenor/baritone; formerly of the Red Robin/Pilgrim Rainbows), and Chester Simmons (bass; formerly of the Rama Rainbows). All but James had attended Cardozo High School. The group formed in early 1957, when the guys were between 18 and 22. Marvin had just gotten out of the army, and Reese recruited him along with some other neighborhood friends. Listening to the music of the 5 Keys, Orioles, and Moonglows, they called themselves the "Marquees," a name picked out by Marvin (and, I suspect, it had something to do with the "Mar" in his name, although there has to be a reason why there were so many groups around with the same name, regardless of spelling, in such a short period of time). As groups do, they would sing on the street corners of the projects. They did talent shows at various D.C. high schools and also the ones held at the Lincoln Theater. ("We never won those, 'cause Billy Stewart would always beat us out," says Reese.) They had a neighbor named Peasie Adams, who not only listened, but occasionally joined in with them on the street corners. She had met Bo Diddley at shows (Bo was living in D.C. at this time), and introduced the Marquees to him. Bo and his manager, Phil Landwehr, listened to them and liked what they heard. Landwehr also became their manager, and, in the late summer of 1957, he landed a recording deal for them with Columbia Records' Okeh subsidiary. Bo Diddley Billy Stewart On September 25, 1957 the Marquees journeyed to New York City, where they recorded five sides at the CBS Building on Broadway. Two of these were as the Marquees: "Wyatt Earp" and "Hey Little School Girl," both led by Reese Palmer ("I wrote them and I sang them"). They were backed up by the Bo Diddley band (Diddley's maracas player, Jerome Green, is quite prominent on "Hey Little School Girl"). They also backed up for Billy Stewart on "Billy's Heartaches" and "Baby, You're My Only Love." After the session, Okeh decided that it didn't like the way Bo Diddley's band sounded on "Wyatt Earp." So on November 12, the Marquees returned to re-record the song using a studio band; this is the cut that was released. The two sides by the Marquees and the two by Billy Stewart were all issued in November 1957. "Wyatt Earp" got a good rating in the trades the week of December 9, along with Thurston Harris' "Do What You Did," the Casuals' "So Tough," Roy Hamilton's "Don't Let Go," the Teenchords' "Tell Me Love," the 5 Stars' "Dead Wrong," and the Vanguards' "Moonlight."

WOW! What an historic 62 year old vision of beauty! On everybody’s favourite label, in its full glory complete with the seemingly “always” push-out TRI-CENTER, this 45 looks completely irresistible. The twanging guitar on the intro of “Big Mary’s” instantly triggers visions of an distinctively attractive jolly n’ sexy Madame in charge of “dark” goings-on in a hideaway-den of iniquity. Smokey, blues man in the corner, turns a blind-eye to the choices of recreation; couples hanging onto the drinks-crowded bar as the Sax-Man suggestively blows his reed; Titus snarls with evocative excitement, presumably in anticipation of a good night ahead…at BIG MARY’S Who could not want to attend.. Equally who could not what to own such a gorgeous disc, bringing all manner of speculative-lusting with it’s R&B; Rhythms…cradling that growling vocal. Okeh records sent their mobile recording unit down to St. Louis to record several talented bands, including this one, which cut many hot sides, though this is arguably the hottest. Of serious note is cornettist Bob Pope's hot solo (he later rose to fame with the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks about a year later), with baritone sax accompaniment by Jules Schneider, which is easily the highlight of the recording. Also note Porter Brown's hot banjo and Jules Schneider's ability to solo on tenor as well as baritone saxophone. Chick Harvey's vocal is a nice transition from the boring studio singer's of New York. The hideout is especially hot, with excellent clarinet work from Bud Hassler. All and all an especially hot side from an incredibly hot dance band. Enjoy!

Lopez features his star cornettist Bob Effros, with an unstoppable rhythm section (talk about banjo-tuba synergy!) backing him up. Enjoy!
The lure of the Okeh Promo - never leaves you does it? Amazingly this beauty has never been bootlegged, re-issued or received enough turntable exposure for it to come under the “oldie” umbrella. Sounds just as fresh and exhilarating as the first time I heard it, circa 1972. Falling into the same category as a few other stand-out NS Okeh’s.. Johnny Robinson, Sandra Phillips jump to mind..truly wonderful Northern Soul that has bemusingly flown over the heads of too many NS jocks. Take a listen, this is exceptional stuff screaming to have it’s day in court. But there’s more, for the vocal group enthusiast “Baby If You Were Gone” is a drop-to-your-knees Soul ballad with a harmony enriching provided by an uncredited group. Shame on me, shame on you, shame on all of us…this should’ve been a Northern Soul Monster decades ago! Dayton Daily News 2015-04-14William "Count" Basie (August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. His mother first taught him piano and he started performing in his teens. Dropping out of school, he learned to operate lights for vaudeville and improvised to accompany silent films at a local theater in his town of Red Bank, New Jersey. By 16, he increasingly played jazz piano at parties, resorts and other venues. In 1924, he went to Harlem, where his performing career expanded; he toured with groups to the major jazz cities of Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. In 1929 he joined Bennie Moten's band in Kansas City, and played with them for years, until Moten's death in 1935.
That year Basie formed his own jazz orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others. Many notable musicians came to prominence under his direction, including the tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, the guitarist Freddie Green, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison and singers Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams. Basie's theme songs were "One O'Clock Jump," developed in 1935 in the early days of his band, and "April In Paris".
Cabell "Cab" Calloway III (December 25, 1907 – November 18, 1994) was an American jazz singer and bandleader. He was strongly associated with the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York City where he was a regular performer.
Calloway was a master of energetic scat singing and led one of the United States' most popular African American big bands from the start of the 1930s through the late 1940s. Calloway's band featured performers including trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Adolphus "Doc" Cheatham, saxophonists Ben Webster and Leon "Chu" Berry, New Orleans guitar ace Danny Barker, and bassist Milt Hinton. Calloway continued to perform until his death in 1994 at the age of 86.
Cab Calloway was born in a middle-class family in Rochester, New York, on Christmas Day in 1907. He lived there until moving to Baltimore, Maryland in 1918. His father, Cabell Calloway II, was a lawyer and his mother, Martha Eulalia Reed, was a teacher and church organist. When Cab was young, he enjoyed singing in church. His parents recognized their son's musical talent and he began private voice lessons in 1922. He continued to study music and voice throughout his formal schooling. Despite his parents' and vocal teachers' disapproval of jazz, Calloway began frequenting and eventually performing in many of Baltimore's jazz clubs, where he was mentored by drummer Chick Webb and pianist Johnny Jones.
