A lamellophone (also lamellaphone or linguaphone, from the Latin root lingua meaning "tongue", i.e., a long thin plate that is fixed only at one end) is any of a family of musical instruments.
The name comes from the Latin word "lamella" for "plate" and the Greek root "phonos" for "sound". The name derives from the way the sound is produced: the instrument has a series of thin plates, or "tongues", each of which is fixed at one end and has the other end free. When the musician depresses the free end of a plate with a finger or fingernail, and then allows the finger to slip off, the released plate vibrates.
The lamellophones constitute category 12 in the Hornbostel-Sachs system for classifying musical instruments.
A large number of lamellophones originate in Africa, where they are known under different names including mbira, sanza, kisanji, likembe, kalimba, and kongoma. They play a role in southeast African Music. They were reported as early as the 16th century, but there is no doubt they have a much longer history. The Caribbean marímbula is also of this family. The marímbula can be seen as a bass variant of the mbira and is sometimes used in hiphop music.
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise, centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away".
The first film in the series, Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope), was released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. It was followed by the similarly successful sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); these three films constitute the original Star Wars trilogy. A prequel trilogy was later released between 1999 and 2005, which received a more mixed reaction from critics and fans, compared to the original trilogy. All seven films were nominated for or won Academy Awards, and were commercial successes, with a combined box office revenue of $4.38 billion, making Star Wars the fourth highest-grossing film series. The series has spawned an extensive media franchise—the Star Wars expanded universe—including books, television series, computer and video games, and comic books, resulting in significant development of the series's fictional universe. Star Wars also holds a Guinness World Records title for the "Most successful film merchandising franchise." In 2012, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at USD $30.7 billion, including box-office receipts as well as profits from their video games and DVD sales.
Available at http://coloradosoundscapes.com/ .This handmade instrument has a neat design, highly esthetic look and the most pure sound I have heard in kalimbas. The tines are made of very hard steel and because of that they ring like little silver bells. Their sound resembles glockenspiel rather than lamellophone, which is very cool and unique. The body has an excellent resonant soundbox capable of producing strongly marked wah-wah effect. No electronic effects were used on this recording. This is the dry sound, recorded as is. Visit my blog to get free tuning charts and MP3: http://saregama-music.blogspot.com/

The Anywaa, an ethnic group in Gambella in Western Ethiopia, call this instrument the "thoom otieno" or sometimes just "thoom." The term "thoom" by itself may refer to either this lamellophone or a five-stringed lyre. Adding "otieno" identifies the lamellophone specifically. It was named after a man called Otieno, who lived many years ago in the Pochalla area. In the Anywaa kingdom, he was well-known for his metal working. “Otieno” means “spider,” which denotes a crafty guy: spiders are good at spinning webs, as Otieno was good at metal working.
This month's video is a soundtrack featuring the music box, an instrument that I enjoy to watch as much as I do hear. So much so that I like to take old jewellery boxes (especially the cardboard type ones made for children) apart so that I can watch the mechanics as they turn. Thanks for listening! Don't forget... HD..! Concerning the title: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lamellophone The music and image are both mine.

Guns N' Roses composed the song. I arranged and recorded this version. THANK YOU BRIDGET FOR THIS AWESOME BIRTHDAY PRESENT!!!!!!! The instrument is a lamellophone, 'thumb piano' or kalimba but I call it Thumbelina. It's a coconut hemisphere from Indonesia and I tune it with pliers and a screwdriver. Kalimba is the name for the african equivalent. They can get pretty big and complex. Using head phones or proper (not laptop) speakers will make my bass voice sound (slightly) less pathetic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thumb_piano http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamellophone http://shop.kalimbamagic.com/ http://thumbelina.org/
