The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted the book launch for The Revenge of Geography: What the Map Tells Us About Coming Conflicts and the Battle Against Fate by Robert D. Kaplan, CNAS Non-Resident Senior Fellow and Chief Geopolitical Analyst at Stratfor, on Thursday, September 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. David Ignatius, Associate Editor and Columnist at The Washington Post, interviewed Kaplan, followed by Q&A; with the audience.
In The Revenge of Geography, Kaplan builds on the insights, discoveries and theories of great geographers and geopolitical thinkers of the near and distant past to look back at critical pivots in history and then forward at the evolving global scene. Kaplan traces the history of the world's hot spots by examining their climates, topographiesand proximities to other embattled lands. Kaplan then applies the lessons learned to the present crises in Europe, Russia, China, the Indian subcontinent, Turkey, Iran and the Arab Middle East. The result is a holistic interpretation of the next cycle of conflict throughout Eurasia. Kaplan shows how timeless truths and natural facts can help prevent this century's looming cataclysms.

Anarchy Is Coming: Global Chaos, Environmental Degradation, Violence & Crime (2000)
The Coming Anarchy: How scarcity, crime, overpopulation, tribalism, and disease are rapidly destroying the social fabric of our planet is an influential article written by journalist Robert D. Kaplan, which was first published in the February 1994 edition of The Atlantic Monthly. It is considered to be one of the fundamental theses on the state of current world affairs in the post Cold War era, and is ranked on the same level of doctrinal importance as Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations and Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man theses. It has also been criticized as a Malthusian reading of the world, for blaming the situation on its victims and for overlooking alleged political and economical causes such as neoliberal policy.
Fukuyama believed that the end of the Cold War would bring about a new era of peace in world affairs. Kaplan argued that the Cold War was the closest the world would ever get to Utopia. The new struggles were no longer neatly ideological, but cultural and historical. New tensions such as population increases, urbanization, and resource depletion are undermining fragile governments across the developing world.
The article was republished as the first chapter of the book The Coming Anarchy in 2000. The book also included the controversial article Was Democracy Just A Moment? and several others by Kaplan.

Robert David Kaplan (born June 23, 1952 in New York City) is the author of many books on foreign affairs and travel, whose work over three decades has appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The New Republic, The National Interest, Foreign Affairs and The Wall Street Journal, among other newspapers and publications. His more controversial essays about the nature of US power have spurred debate in academia, the media, and the highest levels of government. Kaplan is the author of the influential article "The Coming Anarchy", published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1994. A frequent theme in his work is the reemergence of cultural and historical tensions temporarily suspended during the Cold War.
From March 2008 to spring 2012, Kaplan was a Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, which he rejoined in 2015.[1] Between 2012 and 2014, he was chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor, a private global forecasting firm. In 2009, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates appointed Kaplan to the Defense Policy Board, a federal advisory committee to the United States Department of Defense. In 2011, Foreign Policy magazine named Kaplan as one of the world's "top 100 global thinkers."

Rethinking Series 2014-15: Chinese Views, Strategy and Geopolitics
On January 7, 2015, as part of the JHU/APL Rethinking Seminar Series - Rethinking Global Security Constructs, Threats and Potential Responses (2014-15), Robert D. Kaplan (Senior Fellow, Center for a New American Security) discussed "Chinese Views, Strategy and Geopolitics."
Mr. Kaplan focused on China's own geopolitics and how the South and East China Seas, India, Korea, Russia, all look from a Chinese perspective. He also explored the concept that China's ability to challenge the US international order will depend on how China handles its near-abroad as well as its own economy.
Mr. Kaplan is the bestselling author of fifteen books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages, including Asia’s Cauldron, The Revenge of Geography, Monsoon, Balkan Ghosts, and Eastward to Tartary. He is a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and a contributing editor at The Atlantic, where his work first appeared three decades ago. He was chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor, a visiting professor at the United States Naval Academy, and a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board. Foreign Policy magazine twice named him one of the world’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers.”

Robert D. Kaplan: 'A More Crowded, Nervous, Anxious World'
NEW YORK, November 12, 2014 — Atlantic foreign correspondent and author Robert D. Kaplan argues that a host of factors, such as East Asian nationalism and capitalist growth, have contributed to the erosion of American naval dominance in Asian waters, and says that tensions surrounding the South China Sea indicate that we've entered "a more crowded, nervous, anxious world."

Robert D. Kaplan's The Revenge of Geography Book Launch Event
