They have been threatened with deportation and imprisonment, even “elimination”... They are not the only ones at the receiving end of the ruling party's threats: Christians, men who drink in drinking dens, foreigners and those who marry them, have all been singled out as undesirable in the speeches of President Sam Nujoma. This is in strong contrast to Namibia's progressive constitution, which protects diversity and human rights. Despite the ongoing threats against them, gays and lesbians recently held Namibia's first-ever gay pride march through the streets of downtown Windhoek. We meet Ian, a local activist, and a group of gay men. They were all once supporters of SWAPO and the President, but now fear for their future in the country they helped liberate. They feel cast aside in the name of political expediency. “If we don’t do something about it now everybody is going to leave the country or go into hiding. I don’t want to live a lie”. This feature explores the worrying contradiction in Sam Nujoma: the kindly patriarchal figure whose utterances at times betray him as a man who will go to any lengths to cling to power and to avoid the AIDS pandemic of many other African nations...

Sam Nujoma
Samuel Daniel "Shafiishuna" Nujoma (/nuːˈjoʊmə/; born 12 May 1929) is a Namibian revolutionary, anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first President of Namibia from 1990 to 2005. Nujoma was a founding member and the first president of the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in 1960. He played an important role as leader of the national liberation movement in campaigning for Namibia’s independence from South African rule. He established the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) in 1962 and launched a guerrilla war against the apartheid government of South Africa in 1966. Nujoma led SWAPO during the Namibian War of Independence, which lasted from 1966 to 1989.
After World War I the League of Nations gave Southwest Africa, formerly a German colony, to the United Kingdom as a mandate under the title of South Africa. When the National Party won the 1948 election in South Africa and subsequently introduced apartheid legislation, these laws also extended into Southwest Africa which was the de facto fifth province of South Africa.

Cuban Five
The Cuban Five, also known as the Miami Five (Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González), are five Cuban intelligence officers who were arrested in September 1998 and later convicted in Miami of conspiracy to commit espionage, conspiracy to commit murder, acting as an agent of a foreign government, and other illegal activities in the United States. The Five were in the United States to observe and infiltrate the Cuban-American groups Alpha 66, the F4 Commandos, the Cuban American National Foundation, and Brothers to the Rescue. They were part of La Red Avispa (the Wasp Network).
In 2001 the Cuban government acknowledged—after denying the fact for nearly 3 years—that the 5 men were intelligence agents. It said they were spying on Miami's Cuban exile community, not the US government. Cuba contends that the men were sent to South Florida in the wake of several terrorist bombings in Havana organized by anti-communist terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative.

[The following press release was written with the production of this documentary in 1990]
After 23 years of bitter armed struggle against South African forces of occupation, on the 21st March 1990 Namibia attained independence.
With independence has come dignity, a strong sense of national pride and a constitution acclaimed as one of the best in the world with its emphasis on the protection of human rights and personal liberty.
Showing courage and optimistic enthusiasm, Namibians are tackling the task of rebuilding a nation dispossessed by a lifetime of colonial domination - and devastated by decades of occupation by South African Security Forces.
The challenge is daunting.
An estimated 44 000 Namibian exiles have returned home.
Housing is in desperate short supply and unemployment currently runs at around 50% of the adult population.
For the majority of Namibians, independence has had no meaningful effect on the quality of their day-to-day lives.
Recognising the need to pre-empt an exodus of white expertise, skills and investment capital, the new Namibian government introduced a policy of "national reconciliation".
In effect, this has meant that those who held the economic power under the past regime continue to do so.
In short, the new government has succeeded in reconciling with the "haves".
It remains to be seen to what extent this government - elected by the people after 23 years of liberation struggle - will be successful in meeting the aspirations of the majority - who remain the "have nots".
This challenge and the consistent refusal of the government to address the public outcry over SWAPO Detention Camps in exile and the fate of those who remain "missing in exile" will prove the biggest test for SWAPO in the years to come.

[The following press release was written with the production of this documentary in 1990]
After 23 years of bitter armed struggle against South African forces of occupation, on the 21st March 1990 Namibia attained independence.
With independence has come dignity, a strong sense of national pride and a constitution acclaimed as one of the best in the world with its emphasis on the protection of human rights and personal liberty.
Showing courage and optimistic enthusiasm, Namibians are tackling the task of rebuilding a nation dispossessed by a lifetime of colonial domination - and devastated by decades of occupation by South African Security Forces.
The challenge is daunting.
An estimated 44 000 Namibian exiles have returned home.
Housing is in desperate short supply and unemployment currently runs at around 50% of the adult population.
For the majority of Namibians, independence has had no meaningful effect on the quality of their day-to-day lives.
Recognising the need to pre-empt an exodus of white expertise, skills and investment capital, the new Namibian government introduced a policy of "national reconciliation".
In effect, this has meant that those who held the economic power under the past regime continue to do so.
In short, the new government has succeeded in reconciling with the "haves".
It remains to be seen to what extent this government - elected by the people after 23 years of liberation struggle - will be successful in meeting the aspirations of the majority - who remain the "have nots".
This challenge and the consistent refusal of the government to address the public outcry over SWAPO Detention Camps in exile and the fate of those who remain "missing in exile" will prove the biggest test for SWAPO in the years to come.
