'Oh for a Closer Walk with God', arranged by CV Stanford, sung by the choir of Paisley Abbey. This is a recording from Songs of Praise (20 October, 2013) hence the wee clip of Steph Macleod's prayer at the beginning which leads nicely into the Anthem.
This is one of my favourite pieces of church music, and it is all the more moving for me to see this recording as it was my last involvement with the choir as a Choral Scholar. The Abbey has been a place of worship and music for 850 years: may there be 850 more!

The Abbey is unique in many respects. It was the cradle of the Stewart Dynasty. Robert, the second grandson of Robert the Bruce, was born on the premises. His mother, Princess Marjorie fell off her horse when coming to the Abbey to pray for the safe delivery of the child. She was brought to the Abbey and found to be dead. By a posthumous operation, the child was delivered and lived to be the first of the Stewart Kings.
In 1807 a musician and composer well known in Scotland, R.A. Smith was in charge of the music at the Abbey. Thorough his talents, the Abbey Band and choir became famous throughout the country. A feature of the Abbey choir has been the Boy's Choir. Joining the Paisley Abbey Choir is Kenneth McKeller who has been called "Scotland's greatest tenor".
The Boys' Choir was reformed at the beginning of the 20th century, robed in the red cassocks and white surplices which the choir still wears. In the mid 1990s, a girls' choir was formed and, in 2000, the girls' choir and boys' choir were amalgamated to form 'the choristers'. At the present time, there are some 20 choristers comprising 14 boys and 6 girls.

Paisley (/ˈpeɪzli/; Scottish Gaelic: Pàislig) is the largest town in the historic county of Renfrewshire in the west central Lowlands of Scotland and serves as the administrative centre for the Renfrewshire council area. The town is situated on the northern edge of the Gleniffer Braes, straddling the banks of the White Cart Water, a tributary of the River Clyde.
The town, a former burgh, forms part of a contiguous urban area with Glasgow; Glasgow city centre is 6.9 miles (11.1 km) to the east. The town came to prominence with the establishment of Paisley Abbey in the 12th century, an important religious hub in medieval Scotland which formerly had control over the other churches in the local area. It is regularly cited as 'Scotland's largest town' as it has yet to attain official city status.
By the 19th century, Paisley had established itself as a centre of the weaving industry, giving its name to the Paisley shawl and the Paisley Pattern. The town's associations with political Radicalism were highlighted by its involvement in the Radical War of 1820, with striking weavers being instrumental in the protests. As of 1993, all of Paisley's mills had closed, although they are memorialised in the town's museums and civic history.

Paisley Abbey
Paisley Abbey is a former Cluniac monastery, and current Church of Scotland Protestant parish kirk, located on the east bank of the White Cart Water in the centre of the town of Paisley, Renfrewshire, about 12 miles (19 km) west of Glasgow, in Scotland.
History
It is believed that Saint Mirin (or Saint Mirren) founded a community on this site in 7th century. Some time after his death a shrine to the Saint was established becoming a popular site of pilgrimage and veneration. The name Paisley may derive from the Brythonic Passeleg, 'basilica' (derived from the Greek), i.e. 'major church', recalling an early, though undocumented, ecclesiastical importance.
In 1163 Walter FitzAlan, the first High Steward of Scotland issued a charter for a priory to be set up on land owned by him in Paisley. It was dedicated to SS. Mary, James, Mirin and Milburga. Around 13 monks came from the Cluniac priory at Much Wenlock in Shropshire to found the community. Paisley grew so rapidly that it was raised to the status of abbey in 1245. Monks from Paisley founded Crossraguel Abbey in Carrick, Ayrshire, in 1244. In 1307, Edward I of England had the abbey burned down. However, it was rebuilt later in the 14th century. William Wallace, born in nearby Elderslie is widely believed to have been educated for some time when he was a boy in the abbey.

By a posthumous operation, the child was delivered and lived to be the first of the Stewart Kings.
In 1807 a musician and composer well known in Scotland, R.A. Smith was in charge of the music at the Abbey. Thorough his talents, the Abbey Band and choir became famous throughout the country. A feature of the Abbey choir has been the Boy's Choir. Joining the Paisley Abbey Choir is Kenneth McKeller who has been called "Scotland's greatest tenor".
The Boys' Choir was reformed at the beginning of the 20th century, robed in the red cassocks and white surplices which the choir still wears. In the mid 1990s, a girls' choir was formed and, in 2000, the girls' choir and boys' choir were amalgamated to form 'the choristers'. At the present time, there are some 20 choristers comprising 14 boys and 6 girls.

I did have a fantastic time on the other side of the world exploring China. The journey had it all, great wall, great food, great company. Take a look. There are many things I love about my job especially the travel. I'm going someplace I've never been before and I'm excited because I'm taking you with me. I'm going to be your eyes and ears. We are going to China. ♪ Go big or go home ♪ I took off for the adventure of a lifetime trekking over 7,000 miles and 13 hours across the globe. My journey began in beijing, the nation's capital and home to over 21 million people. I've been struck by all the hustle and bustle here in beijing. But also the beauty, there's so many parks here, over 300 and a rickshaw is the best way to take it all in. I was eager to learn about beijing's culture and my dear friend, bob woodruff who spent many years living and working here was the perfect tour guide. Bob woodruff. Hey. Bobby. Welcome to China, baby. I met bob in the heart of this market. The most famous shopping street located in the middle of town. These are scorpions. Reporter: Allegedly frying scorpions neutralizes the poison, the tail is the most nutritious part believe it or not. As my time was winding down it would not be complete without one last stop, the great wall of China. ♪ I'm on top of the world hey ♪ ♪ I'm on top of the world hey ♪ The great wall of China is also a great workout. 13,000 miles but I have one word for you, spectacular. Made of stone, brick and wood constructed over centuries, the stunning piece of architecture was built for protection against raids and invasions. My guide mei Jing showed me. This section of the wall is the newest section of the wall actually. How new? Considered a baby. The baby. 600 years old maybe. 600-year-old baby. Reporter: Chengdu was next up. A city known for its most beloved residents, the giant pandas. Come on. You can't come to China and not see the pandas. And here we are. The best part playing with these cuddly creature. Hey. And watching them in their natural habitat. You can't get more up close and personal than this. Oh, my goodness. The local cuisine is also another hot spot I didn't want to miss. Yes. Known for its spice and packed with szechuan pepper this traditional dish cooks meat and vegetables in a boiling broth. A nice kick to it. Whoo! But that wasn't all. I had a first Robert seat to a interetraditional changing of the mask performance. That is so cool. China, a wondrous and rich country I was thrilled to explore. ♪ Oh this is going to be a good life ♪ this is going to be a good life ♪ ♪ going to be a good life good good life ♪ And, you know, we are all so fortunate in our travels and getting to experience and bring it back and before I left some Chinese officials said what do you want us to convey and just to say the beauty of the people and the country there and I hope that we were able to do that. Those pandas. "Gma" and pandas go hand in hand. What was it like being up close and personal with them? They're very jealous if you're playing with one, the other -- Like kids.
