On May 19th, more than a million people will watch the national PBS broadcast of God Loves Uganda, and millions more will be able to watch it on Netflix, iTunes, or DVD! The documentary, which powerfully depicts how U.S. evangelicals foment intolerance and homophobia abroad, leaves audiences shocked, enraged, and asking, "What can I do to stop this?"
PRA has a new tool to help audiences answer that question. Our guidebook, American Culture Warriors in Africa: A Guide to the Exporters of Homophobia and Sexism, exposes the American bad actors most responsible for this crisis and provides guidelines for concrete actions we can take here in the U.S. to stop the persecution of women and sexual minorities overseas. This guidebook—which includes profiles of key players, an overview of their culture war campaigns in Africa, and a case study in effective local organizing—will orient activists and all people of conscience to the global scale of this threat while empowering them to take meaningful action here at home. Many of the American culture warriors included in the guide actively campaign against the full equality of women, LGBTQ people, and other communities here in the United States as well, creating a shared agenda with human rights activist abroad.
This is an unprecedented opportunity to engage millions of Americans in stopping the U.S.-based roots of global homophobia, sexism, and discrimination—but we need your help to publish this guide and get it into the hands of activists! Political Research Associates
Political Research Associates (PRA) (formerly Midwest Research, Chicago, 1981–1987), named and known on the Web as PoliticalResearch.org, is a non-profit research group located in Somerville, Massachusetts.
Mission
PRA studies the U.S. political right wing, as well as white supremacists, and paramilitary organizations. It has a full-time staff of six. The Executive Director is Tarso Luis Ramos. Dr. Jean V. Hardisty was the founder and director from 1981 to 2004. Chip Berlet was the group's senior analyst from 1981-2011. Other staff members include Eric Ethington (Communications Director), Gabriel Joffe (Program Coordinator), and Kassia Palys (Development Coordinator). Staff researchers include Rev. Kapya Kaoma, Cole Parke, and Mariya Strauss. Fellows include Frederick Clarkson, Rachel Tabachnick, T.F. Charlton, and Spencer Sunshine.
PRA publishes a journal, The Public Eye, quarterly, which reports on specific and current movements or trends within the U.S. political Right, and also produces special reports, past examples of which include "Calculated Compassion: How the Ex-Gay Movement Serves the Right's Attacks on Democracy," authored by former PRA research analyst, Surina Khan," which details attacks on gays and lesbians, and "Decades of Distortion," which alleged scapegoating of welfare recipients.

Culture of the United States
The culture of the United States is primarily Western, but is influenced by African, Native American, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American cultures. A strand of what may be described as American culture started its formation over 10,000 years ago with the migration of Paleo-Indians from Asia, Oceania, and Europe, into the region that is today the continental United States. The United States of America has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore. The United States of America is an ethnically and racially diverse country as a result of large-scale migration from many ethnically and racially different countries throughout its history. Differing birth and death rates among natives, settlers, and immigrants are also a factor.
Its chief early European influences came from English settlers of colonial America during British rule. Due to colonial ties with Britain that spread the English language, British culture, legal system and other cultural inheritances, had a formative influence. Other important influences came from other parts of Europe, especially Germany.

Our guidebook, American Culture Warriors in Africa: A Guide to the Exporters of Homophobia and Sexism, exposes the American bad actors most responsible for this crisis and provides guidelines for concrete actions we can take here in the U.S. to stop the persecution of women and sexual minorities overseas. This guidebook—which includes profiles of key players, an overview of their culture war campaigns in Africa, and a case study in effective local organizing—will orient activists and all people of conscience to the global scale of this threat while empowering them to take meaningful action here at home. Many of the American culture warriors included in the guide actively campaign against the full equality of women, LGBTQ people, and other communities here in the United States as well, creating a shared agenda with human rights activist abroad.

Crossroads Fund and Political Research Associates hosted a discussion of the work of political scientist and social activist Jean Hardisty, who died March 16, 2015. Hardisty was a co-founder of Chicago-based Crossroads Fund, and founder of Political Research Associates; both agencies have been existence more than 30 years.
The focus of the discussion, held March 3 at Saint James Commons in downtown Chicago, was on “neoliberalism,” a belief system that is almost the opposite of what traditional political liberalism means. It is, rather, a support of privatization, austerity, deregulation and authoritarianism, according to Tarso Luis Ramos, PRA’s executive director. Ronald Reagan popularized the appoach during his presidency.
Tarso was the featured speaker at the event. PRA board member Lynette Jackson, an associate professor of Gender and Women's Studies and African American Studies at UIC, moderated the discussion. Crossroads Executive Director Jeanne Kracher also spoke about Hardisty and her support of her agency for so many years.
Hardisty founded PRA in 1981 as a research center based in Chicago. She moved its headquarters to Boston a few years later. Her mission was to "get people to take the right seriously.” For more than 35 years, she offered cogent and far-reaching analysis about its impact on women, people of color, immigrants, educators, and the LGBTQ community.
She served on the board of directors of the Highlander Research and Education Center, Ms. Foundation for Women, Center for Women Policy Studies, Grassroots International, Center for Community Change, and the Women’s Community Cancer Project. In addition, she was a consultant for 10 years to the Women Donors Network, where she led seminars on the political right wing. In 2010, she was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by Community Change, Inc., a Boston-based anti-racism organization.
Some audience members also paid tribute to the work of Hardisty, and her impact on their lives personally and professionally.
