Secrets of the Castle with Ruth, Peter and Tom Episode 1 BBC Documentary 2014 Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Peter Ginn and Tom Pinfold turn the clock back as they learn how to build a medieval castle using the same tools, techniques and materials available in the 13th century. Although Britain has some of the finest remaining castles of the medieval period, many of their secrets have been lost in time. Peter and Tom set to work straight away learning the skills of the medieval stonemasons to construct a beautiful spiral staircase. After digging stone out of the quarry they take it to the tracing floor, where every stone is marked out using the most closely guarded knowledge of the medieval castle builders: geometry. Then each step is hand carved, a three-day task, before being winched into place using the treadmill-powered crane. Meanwhile Ruth sets about equipping the simple wattle and daub hovel that is to be their base. She experiments by laying a rush floor, and she commissions clay cooking pots and an oak grain arc to store their wheat and barley. Medieval saws were incredibly expensive, so the arc is carved with an axe and assembled without nails. It becomes clear that all the stone, wood, mortar, dyes, food and water required for the castle needed to be sourced from the surrounding landscape - transporting heavy goods in the 13th century was expensive. One of the most important resources on a medieval building site was water, so Peter visits a wood turner to make a pulley and Tom makes a rope to hoist the bucket from the well. As they enjoy a simple meal of barley and vegetable pottage, they reflect that there are no easy jobs in the medieval age!

It's been an exciting week at Rathnadrinna as the team investigate more of Cutting 3 in the middle of the fort, where the Bronze Age ditch intersects with the Early Christian ring fort. The team have discovered in situ fire pits with samples of sealed charcoal that give us an insight into the types of trees they would have used for burning during this period. Some of the branches still show cut marks! The same area has also unearthed a piece of iron slag, which helps us learn more about the type of metal working that was taking place onsite. A group for National Geographic also visited Rathnadrinna this week for a tour. Archaeological reconstruction of Early Medieval Cathedral, Saint Nicholas, built circa 1200’s AD in Famagusta, Cyprus. Modern Cypriots being ancestrally a synthesis of all the peoples whom occupied the island, reflected here in their French Lusignan (Frankish) heritage of the Middle Ages – the Lusignan dynasty colonised Cyprus from 1192 to 1489AD. The most significant archaeological remnants through material culture of this period and peoples on the island is of this great cathedral, later converted into a Mosque (Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque) following the Ottoman conquest. Now largely in ruins, I hope to show the viewer this monument in its former glory, emulating the early gothic architectural style of France (typical of crusader architecture) whilst accurately depicting its proportions to scale. Dr Richard Ashdowne, Editor, Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British Sources, talks about the completion of the most comprehensive study ever produced of the vocabulary of Latin in the medieval period in Britain. Begun in 1913, the finished dictionary is the culmination of a century-long enterprise which has had over 200 researchers working on it over the decades. The Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British Sources is based entirely on rigorous original research which has systematically surveyed the massive array of British Latin material that survives from the medieval period, including poetry, sermons, chronicles, scientific texts, legal documents, state records, accounts and letters. Researchers have scoured British medieval Latin texts written between the years AD 540 and 1600 by thousands of authors who were born or worked in Britain, including such well-known examples as the Domesday Book, Magna Carta and Bayeux tapestry.
