Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Medieval Latin Estonia, whence also Russian Эсто́ния (Estónija). Other early Latin forms were Estia and Hestia, possibly derived from the tribal name Aesti described by the Roman historian Tacitus in his Germania (ca. 98 AD). Compare also Old Norse Eistland (“Estonia”), German Estland (“Estonia”).
