FCCHK2013 Danny Gittings Testing the Boundaries of the Hong Kong Basic Law
Matt Driskill presents Danny Gittings, Assistant Professor, University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education. From arguments over universal suffrage to controversies over Chief Executive Leung Chun Ying's governance, the boundaries of the Hong Kong Basic Law are being tested as never before. In recent years, China has tightened its grip on Hong Kong in some areas. But, drawing on research for his new book, Introduction to the Hong Kong Basic Law, Professor Gittings will highlight how many more of Beijing's powers remain, as yet, unused. With these powers still being held in reserve, the path remains open to either conciliation or a tougher approach than has been seen so far. He will also seek to shed light on what may happen to Hong Kong in 2047, when the 50-year-period that began in 1997 ends. Before joining the academic world, Danny Gittings worked in senior editorial positions at the South China Morning Post and The Wall Street Journal Asia for 15 years, reporting on Hong Kong's political and constitutional development. He is a co-host on Backchat, RTHK's English-language morning talk show.- published: 19 Oct 2013

CE's loyalty tied to Basic Law: CS (6.12.2013)
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says the idea that the Chief Executive must love the country and Hong Kong has been made clear in Basic Law provisions. Speaking to the media today, she said the the Central People's Government must appoint the Chief Executive, and under the Basic Law, the Chief Executive must be responsible to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as well as the Central Government. She said the Chief Executive must faithfully implement the Basic Law and act in accordance with Central Government-issued directives. "So the spirit underlying all these provisions is very, very clear: that this person can only effectively and faithfully implement the Basic Law, which of course underlines the 'One country, two systems' principle, and will ensure the long-term stability and prosperity of Hong Kong," she said. Communist Regime Turns Hong Kong Into City Of Political Struggle
Communist Regime Turns Hong Kong Into City Of Political Struggle
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews Recently, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) repeatedly criticized Hong Kong citizens of "engaging in political struggle". These words created anger in Hong Kong. Hong Kong's media condemned the CCP for using so-called "Voice of Loving Hong Kong", "Hong Kong Youth Care Association", the CCP representative, Leung Chun-ying, and conflict to vigorously differentiate Hong Kong. The media said actually, it is the CCP that turns Hong Kong to a political struggle city. Who indeed has created political struggle in Hong Kong? Let's take a look at Hong Kong scholars' analysis. Recently, the CCP officials and pro-communist media kept criticizing Hong Kong for being more politicized and being involved in political struggle. It will turn Hong Kong from a financial city into a political struggle city. These words provoked Hong Kong people to react in condemnation and the media also strongly responded. Hong Kong writer Zhang Chengjue: "I think the CCP blamed Hong Kong people, which isn't correct. Many issues belong to Hong Kong's domestic affairs, the Communist regime doesn't need to intervene. The CCP used People's Daily or other 'authority' media to attack the Hong Kong people.I think it is a very stupid way. Moreover, such move will only bring the opposite effect." Jin Zhong, chief editor of Hong Kong's Open magazine: "The CCP openly accused Hong Kong people of political struggle. Actually it is the CCP stirring up the political struggle. If the CCP didn't create the obstacles and stopped the peoples' legal appeal, or hold fraudulent elections, Hong Kong people will not come to protest. The Chinese regime is the one that created Hong Kong's political struggle." Sino-British Joint Declaration and Hong Kong's Basic Law have clearly stated principle of "One Country, Two Systems". The policy of democratic election in Hong Kong should remain unchanged. Jin Zhong: "Hong Kong people do have some political aspirations. It reflects in protest, parade and street events. These are the facts; there is nothing wrong with it. These political demands didn't conceal the nature of Hong Kong society, which has always been a commercial center." Over the past 20 years, the CCP's commitment to Hong Kong people has dragged on. It has never been fulfilled. However, now the CCP has run to a dead end. Jin Zhong: "Hong Kong people have political aspirations that are legitimate and reasonable. It is abide by Hong Kong Basic Law. So this is not political struggle, This is Hong Kong Basic Law that has provided legitimate rights to its people." On Sept. 19, Hong Kong's Apple Daily published an article titled "The CCP Turns Hong Kong Into A Political City". The article condemned the CCP as "absurd". The article said that Hong Kong citizens and pro-democracy Groups are using a peaceful protest for getting a fair, just and open election system. It is not aiming at any single group or individual person, It can't be regarded as political struggle. It can't be the same as the CCP's violent struggle. Jin Zhong: "The current signs showed that the CCP regime, its representatives in Hong Kong, pro-communist groups and Special Administrative govt. are dragging on 2017 election. Hong Kong people had no choice when they faced this obstacle. They have to stand up to maintain their rights, So political demands take place." The article said it is the CCP and its representative in Hong Kong Leung Chun-ying creating political struggle. Jin Zhong points out that to entirely infiltrate Hong Kong society, the CCP sent many spies to Hong Kong. They manipulated behind the scenes so as to influence the Hong Kong government. They established "Voice of Loving Hong Kong", "Youth Care Association" and other pro-communist groups to attack pro- democracy groups. Now the CCP claimed Hong Kong people are involved in political struggles, It seems like a thief shouting to catch thief. 《神韵》2013世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/- published: 21 Sep 2013
