Kenya’s economy has grown by 25% than earlier estimated following a rebasing of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The country’s growth for 2013 was calculated to have risen to 5.7% up from a previous estimate of 4.7% making Kenya the fourth biggest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa after Angola. However, the government is warning Kenyans against celebrating yet saying gains of the new found status would only be realized in the medium to long term.

The National Treasury and the International Monetary Fund have agreed on a stand-by loan deal to support the country's economic reforms. The deal worth between 700 million and 750 million dollars signed on Thursday will give the country a cushion against outside shocks, the IMF said on Thursday. The IMF plans to treat the loan as precautionary and is expected to be issued in late January 2015 after the fund’s board meets. The government had first asked for the emergency loan earlier in the year when IMF boss Christine Lagarde was in the country to protect against unforeseen shocks such as weather related problems in the agricultural sector.
