Charles is a masculine given name, the English and French form of a Germanic name first recorded in the Anglo-Saxon period as Cearl or Ceorl, as the name of king Cearl of Mercia. The corresponding Old Norse form is Carl, the German form is Karl. The name was notably borne by Charlemagne (Charles the Great), and was at the time latinized as Karolus (as in Vita Karoli Magni), later also as Carolus.
The name's etymology is a Common Germanic noun *karlaz meaning "free man", which survives in English as churl (< Old English ċeorl), which developed its deprecating sense in the Middle English period. In the form Charles, the initial spelling ch- corresponds to the palatalization of the Latin group ca- in Central French and the final -s to the former subject case of masculine words in Old French (< Latin -us).
The name is atypical for Germanic names as it is not composed of two elements, but simply a noun meaning "(free) man". This meaning of ceorl contrasts with eorl (Old Norse jarl) "nobleman" on one hand and with þeow (Old Norse þræll) "bondsman, slave" on the other. As such it would not seem a likely candidate for the name of a Germanic king, but it is attested as such with Cearl of Mercia (fl. 620), the first Mercian king mentioned by Bede in his Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum. It is a peculiarity of the Anglo-Saxon royal names that many of the rulers of the earliest period (6th to 7th centuries) have monothematic (simplex) names, while the standard dithematic (compounded) names become almost universial from the 8th century. Compare the name of king Mul of Kent (7th century) which simply translates to "mule".
Charles Wade Barkley (born February 20, 1963) is a former American professional basketball player and current analyst on the television program Inside the NBA. Nicknamed "Sir Charles" and "The Round Mound of Rebound", Barkley established himself as one of the National Basketball Association's (NBA's) most dominating power forwards. He was selected to the All-NBA First Team five times, the All-NBA Second Team five times, and once to the All-NBA Third Team. He earned eleven NBA All-Star Game appearances and was named the All-Star MVP in 1991. In 1993, he was voted the league's Most Valuable Player and during the NBA's 50th anniversary, named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic games and won two gold medals as a member of the United States' Dream Team. In 2006, Barkley was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Barkley was popular with the fans and media and made the NBA's All-Interview Team for his last 13 seasons in the league. He was frequently involved in on- and off-court fights and sometimes stirred national controversy, as in March 1991 when he mistakenly spat on a young girl, and as in 1993 when he declared that sports figures should not be considered role models. Short for a power forward, Barkley used his strength and aggressiveness to become one of the NBA's most dominant rebounders. He was a versatile player who had the ability to score, create plays, and defend. In 2000, he retired as the fourth player in NBA history to achieve 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists.

In his professional career, Smith scored 9,397 points and recorded 4,073 assists. He won two NBA championships with the Rockets in 1994 and 1995. In the first game of the 1995 Finals against the Orlando Magic, Smith made seven three-pointers, including a game-tying shot which sent the game into overtime. The Rockets won the game 120–118.
Smith joined Turner Sports in 1998. He has teamed with Ernie Johnson, Jr. and Charles Barkley on Inside the NBA, a winner of the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Studio Show. Smith has been described as a "straight man" to Barkley, known for his offbeat antics. He occasionally appears on NBA TV as an analyst. He also served as an analyst during the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournaments.

I didn't mean to get you involved in this
I didn't think that it would come This far
Before I let you know
With every falling word I could not resist
What kind of person do you take me for
Charles you're so frightened by life
Been shy all my life
Don't come in between us
When we started to explain Ourselves to you
When we started to erase the pain from
Where we go no one will know
For we'll be alone
On this road
You've been whispering in corners telling jokes
But I've been plotting my revenge very carefully
___________ was mistaken then so was hope
So go ahead and crucify me more
Charles you're so frightened by life
Been shy all my life
Dont' come in between us
When we started to explain Ourselves to you
When we started to erase the pain from
Where we go no one will know
Where we'll be alone
The straw that broke your back
Was one you couldn't see
It came so silently
Left you with no time to react
Pick up your broken bones
Drag them behind you home
Maybe they're tools that you will need
So I don't have to watch you bleed
No I don't wanna watch you bleed
When we started to explain Ourselves to you
When we started to erase the pain from
Where we go no one will know
Where we'll be alone
You're so afraid
You're so alive
No one that sees
Kill you inside
Where do we go
You won't be alone
Charles holds his picture up to show 'Excuse me did I do this wrong?' Tugging at my pantleg I tell him there¹s no wrong in art He frowns and squints in disbelief Answer: Unsatisfactory Always asking me for the right and wrong Charles wants to know how to sing the songs How to sing along Can I make him love his own melodies? Children scattered Œround the classroom floor Like blank pages on tablecloths I tried to sing them all to sleep Charles at my chair, he can¹t lay down Too excited to be alive And he wants some answers out of me A blank sheet of paper and the crayons clutched tightly in our hands This is what we dream This is what we dream Wipe the slate clean Now let¹s begin Used to thing I could save the world With a sign and my fist up in the air Now the blank page is in front of me And the task has me so fuckin¹ scared Scrubbing the paint from my fingers Stains bled from a child¹s psyche Mixes like blood into water Secretly, as if someone¹s watching Regurgitate like a machine? I strive for more than leading sheep Scribbling wildly on their futures How did I become the teacher? I¹m struggling hard not to return To teachings I¹ve tried to unlearn
Charles got a job in a factory
Drilling sheet metal from six till three
Worked extra hours for a better wage
Got lost in his task quite needlessly
I noticed his brain was a plastic box
His work rate improved 'cause he couldn't stop
He couldn't eat lunch with those metal hands
His legs were supports for new inner glands
Next when I saw him his face was gone
A stainless steel spine now instead of bone
His arms became grafted onto the switch
Six months without food made it quite a trip
His wife soon returned from her open grief
She told his employer she had kids to keep
They gave her the scrap price of his machine
