Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is 1085m at its summit and has some of the best views in the UK which are reached using several well used paths. This was a walk we made up to the summit from Pen-y-Pass using the Pyg Track to ascend and the Miner's Track to come back down. We went up on the 25th May 2012 starting at about 9am, and got to the top at about 12.15pm. Weather was absolutely fantastic, no clouds, and the views were outstanding. However, I did get eaten alive by the midges which were crowding around the people at the summit. Will definitely be back to Snowdonia and Snowdon. Our video shows our ascent of Snowdon via the Watkin Path. This is the longest route to the summit and definitely not the easiest route. The walk starts in Nant Gwynant and continues through the picturesque Cwm Llan before climbing the lower slopes of Y Lliwedd towards the summit of Yr Wyddfa, - Snowdon, Bear in mind it was a particularly fine day, not a typical mountain day by any means. It is classed as a hard mountain walk and the last section to the summit is particularly hard going. One of Britain's favourite hill-walks, the Snowdon Horseshoe involves some exposed ridge walking and fabulous airy scrambling to reach the highest mountain in Wales. In the weather we had, it was a truly exhilarating experience and there was even time for a very leisurely lunch at the Hafod Eryri Summit Shelter where we feasted on Welsh oggies and Snowdon beer! The second part of the horseshoe descends over the steep and slippery Watkin Path and then traverses the equally impressive ridge and twin peaks of Y Lliwedd giving fantastic views of the gaping chasm of Cwm Uchaf with its mysterious lake, Llyn Glas, and the twin lakes of Llyn Llydaw. -

Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is 1085m at its summit and has some of the best views in the UK which are reached using several well used paths. This was a walk we made up to the summit from Pen-y-Pass using the Pyg Track to ascend and the Miner's Track to come back down. We went up on the 25th May 2012 starting at about 9am, and got to the top at about 12.15pm. Weather was absolutely fantastic, no clouds, and the views were outstanding. However, I did get eaten alive by the midges which were crowding around the people at the summit. Will definitely be back to Snowdonia and Snowdon. Our video shows our ascent of Snowdon via the Watkin Path. This is the longest route to the summit and definitely not the easiest route. The walk starts in Nant Gwynant and continues through the picturesque Cwm Llan before climbing the lower slopes of Y Lliwedd towards the summit of Yr Wyddfa, - Snowdon, Bear in mind it was a particularly fine day, not a typical mountain day by any means. It is classed as a hard mountain walk and the last section to the summit is particularly hard going. One of Britain's favourite hill-walks, the Snowdon Horseshoe involves some exposed ridge walking and fabulous airy scrambling to reach the highest mountain in Wales. In the weather we had, it was a truly exhilarating experience and there was even time for a very leisurely lunch at the Hafod Eryri Summit Shelter where we feasted on Welsh oggies and Snowdon beer! The second part of the horseshoe descends over the steep and slippery Watkin Path and then traverses the equally impressive ridge and twin peaks of Y Lliwedd giving fantastic views of the gaping chasm of Cwm Uchaf with its mysterious lake, Llyn Glas, and the twin lakes of Llyn Llydaw. It was possible to see the tiny silhouettes of people tackling the knife edge arête on Crib Goch. A steep path involving some mild scrambling leads down to the shore of Lyn Llydaw where it eventually joins the Miners' Track back to Pen y Pass car park.

The Pyg and the Miners Tracks start at the same point. The car park here gets very full, and an early start is essential. It is not known how the Pyg Track got its name - it could be as it passes over the Pigs's Pass (Bwlch y Mocl), because it is close to the Pen y Gwryd Hotel, or because pyg, in welsh, also means pitch, and part of the surface of the path looks like black pitch. Whatever the origin, this path starts 1,170 feet above sea level which gives you a helpful start on the way. Much of this walk is rugged, and very challenging, but the scenery is interesting. The first part of this video shows views from the Pyg Track during the ascent to the summit. Once past the Pigs's Pass, the view down to the left shows the Miners' Track below. The Miners' Track is a good walk to try if you want to walk on Snowdon but don't want to try to reach the summit as the first part is fairly gentle. Views from the descent using the Miner's Track are featured. It was built during the 1800's to serve Britannia Copper Mines which were abandonned in 1917. Mine Manager Arthur Lockwood drove his car to Llyn Glaslyn, and the track to this point at the lake still resembles a road so is a good walking surface. The track does get considerably steeper towards the summit but was fairly easy on our descent.

Snowdon (Welsh: Yr Wyddfa, pronounced [əɾ ˈwɪðva]) is the highest mountain in Wales, at an altitude of 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) above sea level, and the highest point in the British Isles outside Scotland. It is located in Snowdonia National Park (Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri) in Gwynedd, and has been described as "probably the busiest mountain in Britain". It is designated as a national nature reserve for its rare flora and fauna.
The rocks that form Snowdon were produced by volcanoes in the Ordovician period, and the massif has been extensively sculpted by glaciation, forming the pyramidal peak of Snowdon and the arêtes of Crib Goch and Y Lliwedd. The cliff faces on Snowdon, including Clogwyn Du'r Arddu, are significant for rock climbing, and the mountain was used by Edmund Hillary in training for the 1953 ascent of Mount Everest.
Snowdon boasts some of the best views in Britain, and the summit can be reached by a number of well-known paths. The summit can also be reached on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a rack and pinion railway opened in 1896 which carries passengers the 4.7 miles (7.6 km) from Llanberis to the summit station. The summit also houses a visitor centre called Hafod Eryri, built in 2006 to replace one built in the 1930s.
