Hi friends!
Many of you might have recognized that this october the last commercial flying MD-11 is going to be retired. KLM was one of the last MD-11 operators still using this magnificent aircraft! I told myself since a view years to be on the MD-11 again some time. When I heard that it will be retired soon I didn't hesitate long and booked a flight with KLM. During the booking process I found out that my dates would fit with the final flight, so this is how I made it onto that last flight!
And of course I want to share with you my experience! Unfortunately this was a full night flight, which makes it even harder to get a good report about it! But I tried my best.
Initially I was supposed to be on another MD-11 flight from Amsterdam to Montreal, but due to bad weather conditions in Amsterdam I got rebooked onto Air France through Paris, what was a really disappointing experience! I lost my MD-11 dayflight window seat, had to fly through Charles de Gaule, no window seat in a crappy old B747 cabin, bad french attitude, Air France managed to lose my luggage and so on... all in all a day to forget!
So I was really looking forward to this last MD-11 flight after not getting onto my outbound MD-11. KLM did a great job on making this flight a special event, they offered a buffet, did some entertaining at the gate and so on. The KLM crew did a really great job and I would definitely book through KLM again in the future.(nope, never again Air France). Unfortunately KLM and Air France work together really close..

This time you told me to compare the Tri-holers. Someone asked if I could throw in a few 727 clips but I thought the 727 is a little so small to compare it to the L1011, Md11 and Dc-10.
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is a three-engine wide-body jet airliner manufactured by McDonnell Douglas. The DC-10 has range for medium- to long-haul flights, capable of carrying a maximum of 380 passengers. It had its first flight in 1970 and the first customer was American Airlines. Currently there are still lots of Dc-10`s (KC10`s) operating, especially for the US. Air Force.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a three-engine medium- to long-range wide-body jet airliner, manufactured by McDonnell Douglas and, later, by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Based on the DC-10, it features a stretched fuselage, increased wingspan with winglets, refined airfoils on the wing and smaller tailplane, new engines and increased use of composite materials. The Md-11 had its first flight in 1990 and the first customer was Finnair.
The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, commonly referred to as the L-1011 (pronounced "L-ten-eleven") or TriStar, is a medium-to-long-range, wide-body trijet airliner. It was the third widebody airliner to enter commercial operations, after the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The aircraft has a seating capacity of up to 400 passengers and a range of over 4,000 nautical miles (7,410 km). It had its first flight in 1970 and the first customer was Eastern Air Lines.

A Swiss pilot is expressly unhappy with his pay raise. Therefore, he steals an empty MD-11 and begins a furious run in order to break as many windows as he can. Air force pilots convince him that it was definitely NOT a good idea.
If I may recommend that you watch it in HD with strong bass speakers or headphones.
(MD-11s were in service till 2004 at Swiss. F-18 Tigers are later.)

It` s time for another "aviation battle". A few weeks ago someone came up with the idea to compare the B777 withe Md11. A good idea in my opinion cause both were built in the same decade and they both started as competitors. I decided to use only clips of the B777-200. The B777-300 is too big to compare it with the MD-11
The Boeing 777 had its first flight in 1994, since then 1360 planes have been built. The Md-11 had its inaugural flight in 1990 and since then only 200 aircrafts have left the production line.
The Boeing 777 is a family of long-range wide-body twin-engine jet airliners developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's largest twinjet and has a typical seating capacity for 314 to 451 passengers, with a range of 5,235 to 9,500 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,594 km). Commonly referred to as the "Triple Seven", its distinguishing features include the largest-diameter turbofan engines of any aircraft, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section and a blade-shaped tail cone. Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, the 777 was designed to replace older wide-body airliners and bridge the capacity difference between Boeing's 767 and 747. As Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, it has computer-mediated controls. It is also the first commercial aircraft to be designed entirely with computer-aided design.

It` s time for another "aviation battle". A few weeks ago someone came up with the idea to compare the B777 withe Md11. A good idea in my opinion cause both were built in the same decade and they both started as competitors. I decided to use only clips of the B777-200. The B777-300 is too big to compare it with the MD-11 The Boeing 777 had its first flight in 1994, since then 1360 planes have been built. The Md-11 had its inaugural flight in 1990 and since then only 200 aircrafts have left the production line. The Boeing 777 is a family of long-range wide-body twin-engine jet airliners developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's largest twinjet and has a typical seating capacity for 314 to 451 passengers, with a range of 5,235 to 9,500 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,594 km). Commonly referred to as the "Triple Seven", its distinguishing features include the largest-diameter turbofan engines of any aircraft, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section and a blade-shaped tail cone. Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, the 777 was designed to replace older wide-body airliners and bridge the capacity difference between Boeing's 767 and 747. As Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, it has computer-mediated controls. It is also the first commercial aircraft to be designed entirely with computer-aided design. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a three-engine medium- to long-range wide-body jet airliner, manufactured by McDonnell Douglas and, later, by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Based on the DC-10, it features a stretched fuselage, increased wingspan with winglets, refined airfoils on the wing and smaller tailplane, new engines and increased use of composite materials. Overtaking a Lufthansa Cargo MD11
Crossing the North Atlantic on NAT tracks has aircraft in the same direction separated by 1000' instead of the usual 2000' which makes for some great views. We were at Flight Level 310 and travelling at mach 0.84 only about 10-15kts faster than the MD11 which I guess was flying at 0.82. Unfortunately they didn't have cameras. Fed Ex MD-11 crash
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11F operated by FedEx departed Guangzhou, China on a cargo flight to Tokyo-Narita, Japan. The MD-11 landed in high winds. Two crewmembers were onboard (the captain and the first officer). The plane crashed on landing at Tokyo airport, killing both crewmembers. While landing on runway 16R/34L, the airplane bounced on first touchdown, then dropped from 50-100 ft onto the nosewheel at which point, the plane rapidly banked to the left. The port wing impacted the ground and a fire erupted. The MD-11 rolled further onto its back and slid off the runway. A bright orange fireball and black billowing smoke engulfed the plane as it flipped and skidded off the runway. Many of you might have recognized that this october the last commercial flying MD-11 is going to be retired. KLM was one of the last MD-11 operators still using this magnificent aircraft! I told myself since a view years to be on the MD-11 again some time. When I heard that it will be retired soon I didn't hesitate long and booked a flight with KLM. During the booking process I found out that my dates would fit with the final flight, so this is how I made it onto that last flight!
And of course I want to share with you my experience! Unfortunately this was a full night flight, which makes it even harder to get a good report about it! But I tried my best.
Initially I was supposed to be on another MD-11 flight from Amsterdam to Montreal, but due to bad weather conditions in Amsterdam I got rebooked onto Air France through Paris, what was a really disappointing experience! I lost my MD-11 dayflight window seat, had to fly through Charles de Gaule, no window seat in a crappy old B747 cabin, bad french attitude, Air France managed to lose my luggage and so on... all in all a day to forget!
So I was really looking forward to this last MD-11 flight after not getting onto my outbound MD-11. KLM did a great job on making this flight a special event, they offered a buffet, did some entertaining at the gate and so on. The KLM crew did a really great job and I would definitely book through KLM again in the future.(nope, never again Air France). Unfortunately KLM and Air France work together really close..

It was the third widebody airliner to enter commercial operations, after the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The aircraft has a seating capacity of up to 400 passengers and a range of over 4,000 nautical miles (7,410 km). It had its first flight in 1970 and the first customer was Eastern Air Lines.

It` s time for another "aviation battle". A few weeks ago someone came up with the idea to compare the B777 withe Md11. A good idea in my opinion cause both were built in the same decade and they both started as competitors. I decided to use only clips of the B777-200. The B777-300 is too big to compare it with the MD-11
The Boeing 777 had its first flight in 1994, since then 1360 planes have been built. The Md-11 had its inaugural flight in 1990 and since then only 200 aircrafts have left the production line.
The Boeing 777 is a family of long-range wide-body twin-engine jet airliners developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's largest twinjet and has a typical seating capacity for 314 to 451 passengers, with a range of 5,235 to 9,500 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,594 km). Commonly referred to as the "Triple Seven", its distinguishing features include the largest-diameter turbofan engines of any aircraft, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section and a blade-shaped tail cone. Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, the 777 was designed to replace older wide-body airliners and bridge the capacity difference between Boeing's 767 and 747. As Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, it has computer-mediated controls. It is also the first commercial aircraft to be designed entirely with computer-aided design.

Crossing the North Atlantic on NAT tracks has aircraft in the same direction separated by 1000' instead of the usual 2000' which makes for some great views. We were at Flight Level 310 and travelling at mach 0.84 only about 10-15kts faster than the MD11 which I guess was flying at 0.82. Unfortunately they didn't have cameras.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11F operated by FedEx departed Guangzhou, China on a cargo flight to Tokyo-Narita, Japan. The MD-11 landed in high winds. Two crewmembers were onboard (the captain and the first officer). The plane crashed on landing at Tokyo airport, killing both crewmembers.
While landing on runway 16R/34L, the airplane bounced on first touchdown, then dropped from 50-100 ft onto the nosewheel at which point, the plane rapidly banked to the left. The port wing impacted the ground and a fire erupted. The MD-11 rolled further onto its back and slid off the runway. A bright orange fireball and black billowing smoke engulfed the plane as it flipped and skidded off the runway. Firefighters sprayed foam onto the broken remains of the plane with its wheels in the air.
Strong winds gusts up to 75 km/h (40 kts) were lashing the airport area at the time of the crash, and that it had warned airlines of wind shear (sudden change in wind direction that can destabilize a plane). It is probable the plane encountered a wind-shear that caused the MD-11 to dive just before touching down, then hit violently the runway, bounced, and destabilized the plane.

This is not a PRODUCTION! It was a movie made just for the home use. Well, I've now decided however, to show the film to all fans. The film was made in 2004, and its filmed so very bad, very bad camera work (zooming and shaking) and music. As I said this is no production. Every Friday Night in the USA (Saturday Morning Australia, around 0000utc) one or two airports in the USA hosts "Friday Night Ops". On this particular occasion Memphis TN and Dallas Fort Worth TX were running full swing. For this event I flew in the MD11 with the FedEx livery (and configuration). I used the PMDG MD11 in FSX, departing from the Fedex Hub Memphis (Default scenery) to Dallas Fort Worth (FSDT Scenery) The PMDG MD11 was the last PMDG product released with an FS9 version, The real world only saw 200 of this venerable 3 engined aircraft, with the last passenger MD11 retiring from service at KLM in December 2014. Before you watch this please note I filmed this free hand on a blustery day with practically head on gusts so some footage is shaky but I tried my best to do what I could. This is not a PRODUCTION! It was a movie made just for the home use. Well, I've now decided however, to show the film to all fans. The film was made in 2004, and its filmed so very bad, very bad camera work (zooming and shaking) and music. As I said this is no production.
Nevertheless, i would like to share this emotional moment with all Ruesch Productions fans. It's the last flight, of a Swiss MD-11 (HB-IWE) in 2004. We flew to special Places in Switzerland, like Bern, Schaffhausen and much more.

In order to fly one last time on Malev’s legendary TU-154 aircraft in the last week of operation, I travelled once again from Japan to Europe, this time via Zurich onward to Budapest. This video features lots of cockpit footage onboard late Swissair MD-11 HB-IWQ “Valais/Wallis” from Osaka-Kansai to Zurich on a long 12 and a half hour flight. This flight was my last Swissair flight. At this time it was already obvious that the days of Swissair were numbered and the company was in a fundamentally bad shape, despite its glorious history. The friendly cockpit crew offered to take me into the cockpit to pursue my filming passion, because the Maitre de Cabin strictly prohibited filming in the cabin , so all footage in the cabin had to be done “under cover”.
History of MD-11 HB-IWQ VALAIS/WALLIS
Airframe 48541 was manufactured 1997 and delivered to Swissair, registered HB-IWQ, named “Valais/Wallis”, December 22, 1997. After the liquidation of Swissair HB-IWQ was transferred to
Swiss International Airlines on March 31, 2002. HB-IWQ was sold to Varig, Brazil, registered PP-VTU, September 15, 2004. This aircraft was converted into a freighter and sold to United Parcel Service (UPS), registered N284UP, January, 2006. This aircraft is reported to be active

Vacation time ! In September 1996 I travelled with my wife and daughter for three weeks to Switzerland, Turkey and Bulgaria. For me it was my first trip to Bulgaria, visiting the Black Sea resort of Nessebar and Sozopol again, after 24 years. Planning to film flights on board Balkan Bulgarian Airlines AN-24, I was very excited to capture these Soviet Classics on film, before they disappear for good. This video features the flight onboard Swissair MD-11 HB-IWB "Graubünden" from old Seoul-Kimpo Airport to Zurich, a long flight, more than 12 and a half hours, because the airspace on the direct route between Seoul and Beijing - the "Olympic Route" - could not be used. All flights to Europe were directed to the South, to Shanghai and then all the way up North to Beijing and then over Mongolia onward to Russia.
I hope you get an idea of the inflight feeling onboard Business Class on a longhaul flight onboard Swissair almost 20 years ago.
This was the second flight filmed with my "new" SHARP video camera, the first camera using digital recording technology.
Digital technology was a revolution in videography compared to the analog memory recording at that time. However I quickly learned to regret my decision to buy this SHARP camera. Frequent breakdowns, scene ruptures, problems with dust on the video head soon persuaded me to exchange this camera with a far more advanced model from SONY, two years later.
History of MD-11 HB-IWB
Airframe 48444 was manufactured 1991 and delivered to Swissair, registered HB-IWB and named “Graubünden”, March 30, 1991.
After the liquidation of Swissair, HB-IWB was transferred to Swiss International Airlines on March 31, 2002. HB-IWB was sold to Varig, Brazil, registered PP-VTF, October, 2003. This aircraft was converted into a freighter and operated for Federal Express, registered N625FE, owned by Central Air Leasing, after September 28, 2004. This aircraft operated for Transmile Air Services, Malaysia, and was registered 9M-TGP on April 26, 2005. Her new operator Federal Express registered her N644FE on January 18, 2011. N644FE has been reported stored at Victorville (VCV), California, November 8, 2014.

In order to spend X-Mas with my family in Switzerland and to visit friends later in Leipzig and Berlin in December 1996, another longhaul flight onboard Swissair's MD-11 was on the agenda back in December 1996, my second flight from South Korea to Europe within one month.
This video features a flight onboard the ill-fated Swissair MD-11 HB-IWF "Vaud" from old Seoul-Kimpo Airport to Zurich, using the "Olympic route" the first time, saving a full hour flying time, because flights to Europe were allowed to use the direct route between Seoul and Beijing.
Even though this is old footage, I do hope, you get an idea of the inflight feeling onboard Business Class on a longhaul flight onboard Swissair almost 20 years ago, despite the tragic circumstances of this aircraft.

Airframe 48448 was manufactured 1991 and delivered to Swissair, registered HB-IWF, August 5, 1991. HB-IWF was named “Schaffhausen”, later “Vaud”. Every Friday Night in the USA (Saturday Morning Australia, around 0000utc) one or two airports in the USA hosts "Friday Night Ops". On this particular occasion Memphis TN and Dallas Fort Worth TX were running full swing.
For this event I flew in the MD11 with the FedEx livery (and configuration). I used the PMDG MD11 in FSX, departing from the Fedex Hub Memphis (Default scenery) to Dallas Fort Worth (FSDT Scenery)
The PMDG MD11 was the last PMDG product released with an FS9 version, The real world only saw 200 of this venerable 3 engined aircraft, with the last passenger MD11 retiring from service at KLM in December 2014. All MD11's still flying are now in the freight configuration, and the largest operator of the type by far is FedEx.

2014 has been a sad year of aviation history. Both the DC-10 and the MD-11 have flown with passengers for the last time. We are never going to fly a McDonnell-Douglas widebody jet again. There is no place in the world left. No place to go to. It's so unbelievable and sad :(

Flying in the VATSIM Asia Hong Kong - Taipei New Year event on the 31st of January 2015, I haul some freight out of Hong Kong bound for Taipei in the livery of EVA Air Cargo, dressed in a white shirt and (very dark blue) tie, in the PMDG MD11
The PMDG MD11 was the last PMDG product released with an FS9 version, The real world only saw 200 of this venerable 3 engined airliner, with the last passenger MD11 retiring from service at KLM in December 2014. Several MD11's still fly in Cargo operations. You can purchase the PMDG MD11 for FS9 or FSX at http://www.precisionmanuals.com/pages/product/FSX/md11.html
All insets, including charts and facecam, have been edited into the video using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 11.0
During the flight, weight loadings, weather briefings and airway SID STAR approach and ground charts were read off a second computer/monitor.

Before you watch this please note I filmed this free hand on a blustery day with practically head on gusts so some footage is shaky but I tried my best to do what I could. I'm still developing free hand filming skills and the hill at Stansted isn't big enough for a tripod and an operator otherwise I would have done that.
Anyway this video includes 2 MD11's! Martinair Cargo and FedEx, I also managed to catch the stunning China Southern Cargo 77F. In addition to these beauties I caught Flybe's ATR 72 and their leased BMI E135 on the NCL route, Pegasus Airlines 738, SAS 737-600, Germanwings A319, a Private 757 and GLEX, Ryanair Crew LJ45, Thomson 737, Swiss RJ100 doing flight training and of course a few of the regulars of EasyJet and Ryanair :)
