The cover features the Prophet Muhammed holding a sign that says "Je Suis Charlie," the popular slogan being used by many in support of the magazine. Above Muhammed's head are the words "All is forgiven." Guantanamo prisoners released: United States sends five Yemeni detainees to Oman and Estonia

  • Duration: 1:06
  • Updated: 15 Jan 2015
The United States transported five Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo on Wednesday. Four of the men were sent to Oman, while the fifth was sent to Estonia. The five men were cleared for release five years ago but could not be sent back to Yemen because of the fear that they would join Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks in Paris this month. Al Khadr Abdallah Muhammad al-Yafi, Fadhel Hussein Saleh Hentif, Abd Al-Rahman Abdullah Au Shabati and Mohammed Ahmed Salam, each held in Guantanamo for almost 13 years, were transferred to Oman. Akmed Abdul Qadei, captured by Pakistani authorities in 2002 when he was 17, was transferred to Estonia. Oman, despite its proximity to Yemen, is considered stable and has so far avoided the emergence of violence linked to militant Islamic fundamentalism that plagues its neighbors. Separated from Yemen by a large desert, Oman has been a U.S. ally for years. U.S. officials said the released detainees will have an easier time integrating into Omani society than a European one. The men’s release has been hotly disputed in Congress as several Republican senators remain opposed to the sudden influx of releases from Guantanamo. Thirty-three prisoners have been transferred in the past year alone. Several of the senators, including John McCain, proposed a moratorium on Obama’s ability to release prisoners from Guantanamo for the remainder of his term. Following the men’s release this week, the number of prisoners in Guantanamo is down to 122, a tremendous decrease from the 680 prisoners the complex held a decade ago. Seventy-six of the 122 current detainees are Yemeni. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates. In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants. This movie was built thanks to the data collected by ESA's Huygens Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) on 14 January 2005, during the 147-minutes plunge through Titan's thick orange-brown atmosphere to a soft sandy riverbed. In 4 minutes 40 seconds, the movie shows what the probe 'saw' within the few hours of the descent and the eventual landing. At first the Huygens camera just saw haze over the distant surface. The haze started to clear only at about 60 kilometers altitude, making it possible to resolve surface features as large as 100 meters. Only after landing could the probe's camera resolve little grains of sand millions and millions times smaller than Titan. The movie provides a glimpse on such a huge change of scale. credit: ESA/NASA/JPL/University of Arizona source: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA08118

Turkish opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet has printed a special section of excerpts from French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The section does not feature the cover cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad although small black-and-white versions of the image do appear on opinion columns inside.

Police cordoned off Cumhuriyet\'s Istanbul headquarters over security concerns and searched trucks leaving its printing press.

At the paper\'s Ankara offices, protesters hung banners on a nearby wall that read…

Since January 2002, the US has released just over 260 prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. One of them is Moazzam Begg, a British national who grew up in Birmingham. Since his release, he\'s been campaigning for the release of other prisoners and has written a book about his own experiences.

We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates.

In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region\'s violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America\'s war on terror is falling flat on its face. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it\'s all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants.

This movie was built thanks to the data collected by ESA\'s Huygens Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) on 14 January 2005, during the 147-minutes plunge through Titan\'s thick orange-brown atmosphere to a soft sandy riverbed.
In 4 minutes 40 seconds, the movie shows what the probe \'saw\' within the few hours of the descent and the eventual landing. At first the Huygens camera just saw haze over the distant surface. The haze started to clear only at about 60 kilometers altitude, making it possible to resolve surface features as large as 100 meters. Only after landing could the probe\'s camera resolve little grains of sand millions and millions times smaller than Titan. The movie provides a glimpse on such a huge change of scale.
