As part of an ongoing and productive relationship, a delegation from Maine visited its' sister-state of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, in 2010. Part of the trip was to re-visit the Japanes scallop aquaculture industry, with a highlight of stopping at the manufacturing facility of a premier gear supplier, specific to the scallop aquaculture technique called 'ear-hanging.'

This machine was demonstrated during a trip to Aomori Prefecture Japan - Maine's sister state - and is courtesy of Dr. Christoper Davis, at the Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center. During production of scallops by this method, fouling organisms grow on the shells, and are cleaned off once or twice per year. This machinery performs that task efficiently, and allows the scallops to stay in the water as much as possible.

This video shows the harvest of farmed Peruvian scallop, Argopecten purpuratus (fan shell) in Peru. The culture of fan shell (sea scallop) in Peru was developed as small projects in the 1980s; then progressing to much larger number of bigger projects during the 2000s.
The suspended method of scallop culture is favored –compared to bottom culture- due to its easiness in management and de-attachment upon harvest, higher production, better survival, and satisfactory growth rates.
