In the summer of 1947, filmmaker Paul Gordon meets the violinist Yehudi Menuhin at a dinner in Zurich. Menuhin tells of his concert tours in the cities of the world and Gordon wants to know why he's not playing in smaller cities, where millions of people live who also love music. "The year has only 365 days," Menuhin's simple answer. So Paul Gordon had the idea of making a film, not a scripted film "but a concert on celluloid, on film!" After initial skepticism, Menuhin accepts. The filming of "Concert Magic", the first concert film in Hollywood history, begins in December 1947, for Yehudi Menuhin a privately very disturbing time: His first marriage had failed and he just had married his second wife Diana. The documentary "Menuhin in Hollywood" tells the story of the "Concert Magic" that had its premiere in October 1948 at the Stage Door Theatre in San Francisco. 50 years later, Menuhin meets with his biographer Humphrey Burton in Warsaw to get together and watch those legendary film recordings, of which he had seen not a single second up to that time. Yehudi Menuhin himself was particularly interested in his recording of the Violin Concerto by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, that due to its length could not be taken into account in "Concert Magic". Even experts did not know for a long time that Menuhin had recorded the concert in front of the camera. Visibly moved, the century violinist comments these and other rarities. The focus of the film is on previously unreleased footage from the legendary Hollywood music film, “Concert Magic” from the year 1947. In interviews and conversations with his biographer Humphrey Burton Yehudi Menuhin recalls the origin of the film, the war and post-war era in America and Germany. Special attention is paid to his commitment to the victims of World War II. These include great artists forced into American exile such as fellow musician Béla Bartók. During the Second World War Yehudi Menuhin helped to raise the spirits of war victims and refugee children with numerous concerts. He supported artists in American exile, performed for an audience of freed prisoners of the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, and in war ravaged Berlin he played demonstratively under the baton of Wilhelm Furtwängler. Looking back at the mid-1940's it is clear to see with what passion Menuhin linked his goals of musical excellence with a dedication to social causes. He used music to plead for justice and reconciliation often against strong resistance. A film by Günter Atteln Produced by: EuroArts, RBB/ARTE

We are proud to present the second Edition of the ultimate collection of films by Bruno Monsaingeon, probably the most outstanding music filmmaker, who has documented life and work of the greatest artists of our time: Yehudi Menuhin (1916 - 1999). The Bruno Monsaingeon Edition Volume 2 is a true gem for collectors, not only in terms of the design and content but also matching the personality of the artist portrayed, as well as of the director himself . In the edition 12 films on DVD and various bonus programs will be found, most of them published for the first time: the 3 part documentary “Menuhin returns to the USSR” (“Retour aux Sources”) and five concert programs in Leningrad and Moscow showing his triumphant appearance at the top of the Perestroika in 1987 and 1989, the third movement of the Elgar Concerto which has never been published, the big retrospective documentary film “The Violin of the Century”, and other films like “Four Seasons” and the Brahms Concerto, also the conversations in Mykonos exclusively edited for this edition, as well as an interview with Bruno Monsaingeon he gave in January 2014 in Berlin
Yehudi Menuhin, violine; Adolph Baller, Marguerite Campbell, Jakob Gimpel: piano; Eula Beal, Mezzo-Soprano Symphony Orchestra of Hollywood Antal Dorati The great master violinistYehudi Menuhin (1916 1999) joined a group of friends at the Charlie Chaplin Studios in 1947 to record the legendary Hollywood music film, Concert Magic. This DVD releases the film for the first time for home viewing. When it was premiered at the Stage door Cinema in San Francisco, it was the first ever concert filmed for movie audiences. Yehudi Menuhin was 32 years old and had already climbed to enormous heights of critical success and popularity. He and the other musician played classical and romantic works for the recording. The one hour long bonus track features The Story behind Concert Magic. In1997, 50 years after the creation of the film, Yehudi Menuhin and Humphrey Burton (director of a number of Leonard Bernstein concerts and an expert biographer of Menuhin) viewed the film in front of the cameras. Menuhin recalled the making of the film in an interview and added many interesting details with regards to music, filming, artists and the idea behind it all. http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=2054618
Lord Yehudi Menuhin has an interesting opinion relating to the multitude of differing cultures within the EU and how (we) should all be talking to each other. Given this small snippet of this audio interview was conducted during the later 1990's it is of some interest how the EU has developed since that time.

It was November 1945 in Moscow. The war had ended just a few months before. 29 year old Yehudi Menuhin came to Russia right after WWII to play in his parents' country of birth. The posters appeared: violinist Yehudi Menuhin is going to play three concerts, two solo recitals (with pianists Lev Oborin in Sonatas by Franck and Debussy, and Abraham Makarov accompanying ) and one with orchestra performing three concertos: Bach in D minor for two violins with David Oistrakh, Beethoven and Brahms, all with Alexander Orlov conducting. All income from these concerts would benefit wounded soldiers of the Red Army. At this time I was a student at the Music School of the Moscow Conservatory. The rumors that this great American violinist, whose parents had been from Russia, was now coming to Moscow, excited the Soviet musical establishment to the point of frenzy. Once the concert was announced, tickets were out of reach for ordinary Soviet citizens. In fact, Professor Alexander Feodorovich Goedike, a famous organist and composer with whom I studied chamber music, once told me: "My dear, all the tickets have been sent to the Kremlin Communists". What to do? And so, my friend and classmate Lelik Zisman, also a violinist (as matter of fact, he was from Odessa) and I decided to ask the Director of the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory Yefim Borisovich Galanter for tickets. We went to his office and Lelik with tears in his eyes said: "We are students of Professors Zeitlin and Yampolsky (the most important violin teachers in USSR), please, help us!" --"Nothing left"-said Yefim Borisovich, but as though sensing the desperation of two poor Jewish boys, and perhaps recalling his own childhood, he took a piece of paper and wrote, "Let two pass," and signed. That evening we heard this famous recital, which fortunately was recorded, and now you can hear the same on our "time machine"! London Evening Standard 2015-01-23Yehudi Menuhin, Baron Menuhin, OM, KBE (22 April 1916 – 12 March 1999) was an American violinist and conductor who spent most of his performing career in the United Kingdom. He was born to Russian Jewish parents in the United States, but became a citizen of Switzerland in 1970, and of the United Kingdom in 1985. He is often considered to be one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century.
Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York City, United States, to Bielorussian Jewish parents from what is now Belarus. His sisters were the concert pianist and human rights worker Hephzibah Menuhin and the pianist, painter, and poet Yaltah Menuhin. Through his father Moshe Menuhin, a former rabbinical student and anti-Zionist writer, Menuhin was descended from a distinguished rabbinical dynasty.
Menuhin began violin instruction at age four under violinist Sigmund Anker; his parents had wanted Louis Persinger to be his teacher, but Persinger refused. Menuhin displayed extraordinary talents at an early age. His first solo violin performance was at the age of seven with the San Francisco Symphony in 1923. Persinger then agreed to take Menuhin as a student. When the Menuhins went to Paris, Persinger suggested Yehudi go to his own teacher, Eugène Ysaÿe. He did have one lesson with Ysaÿe, but did not like his method or the fact that he was very old. Instead, he went to the Romanian composer and violinist George Enescu, after which he made several recordings with his sister Hephzibah. He was also a student of Adolf Busch. In 1929 he played in Berlin, under Bruno Walter's baton, three concerti by Bach, Brahms and Beethoven. In 1932 he recorded Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto in B minor for HMV in London, with the composer himself conducting, and between 1934 and 1936 he made the first integral recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin.
