The Charlottetown Conference was held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for representatives from the colonies of British North America to discuss Canadian Confederation. The conference took place between 1 and 9 September 1864. The conference was originally planned as a meeting of representatives from the Maritime colonies: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Newfoundland agreed with the movement, but was not notified in time to take part in the proceedings. Britain encouraged a Maritime Union between these colonies, hoping that they would then become less economically and politically dependent on the Crown, and provide for greater economic and military power for the region in light of the American Civil War. However, another colony, the Province of Canada, comprising present-day Ontario and Quebec, heard news of the planned conference and asked that the agenda be expanded to discuss a union that would also include them. In August 1864 Newfoundland also asked to be allowed to attend the conference, but by then it was too late to change the plans. This video is targeted to blind users. Prince Edward Island is the smallest province of Canada. Despite this, it holds many treasures of both the natural kind and the man-made variety. These include white sand beaches, delicious seafood, enormous golfing grounds and numerous lighthouses. When it comes to history and culture, PEI also has the honor of being the birthplace of famous author L.M. Montgomery, while is capital city of Charlottetown has been baptized as the birthplace of Confederation. Travel Guide: Prince Edward Island This island is known as the Garden of the Gulf. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be continuing our travel series with a look at Prince Edward Island. Smallest Province Located in the east, Prince Edward Island is one of three Maritime provinces in Canada. It is country’s smallest province in terms of population, with just over 140 thousand inhabitants, and with respect to area, at just over two thousand square miles. Climate With a comfortable spring, warm summer, cool fall and crisp winter, PEI experiences four different seasons. Charlottetown Known as the Birthplace of Confederation, the capital city of Charlottetown is found on a harbor. Here you’ll find the Province House, which is the meeting place of PEI’s Legislative Assembly. Beaches As it is surrounded by sand, the island is home to Canada’s warmest beaches. Popular spots include Basin Head and Brackley Beach. Be sure to observe the sandy dunes at Cavendish or go camping at Panmure Island. Golfing The Rodd Crowbush Golf & Beach Resort offers both a lakeside beach and one of the island’s best golf courses. In fact, PEI is Canada’s number one golfing destination: try your skills on the champion courses at the Rodd Brudenell River Resort to see for yourself! Culture When it comes to art and culture, Prince Edward Island is famous for being the birthplace of Lucy Maud Montgomery. The “Anne of Green Gables” author was inspired by the beautiful agricultural lands of the Green Gables farm in Cavendish, and today the Green Gables farmhouse is considered a National Historic Site. Art If you’re interested creating some art of your own, there are many pottery classes and studios in PEI where you can learn the craft. Lighthouses The province is also well-known for its lighthouses, such as Point Prim and Panmure Head, and these were vital for early settlers traveling to the area by sea. Seafood A trip to PEI isn’t complete without a taste of its seafood. For fresh fish and oysters, visit the bay of Malpeque Harbour. If you want to devour delicious lobster in a sea captain’s home, head to the charming and historic village of Victoria-by-the-sea. Looking to do some of your own fishing? Try catching some tuna in North Lake! Bars After you eat, you can grab a drink at one of PEI’s many bars, like the Olde Dublin Irish pub. A Naturally Beautiful and Fun-Filled Destination From its gorgeous pastoral scenery, its pretty beaches and golf courses to its pottery classes, the famed Green Gables farmlands and numerous lighthouses, there’s certainly plenty to see and do in Prince Edward Island.
With its quaint, storied natural beauty and genuinely friendly, down-to-earth approach to hospitality, Charlottetown has long been an attractive tourism destination. But with a changing economic climate, the Prince Edward Island capital has had to shift its focus, deriving new and creative ways to introduce visitors to its vibrant, east-coast atmosphere. Today, Charlottetown is creating lasting impressions and earning rave reviews as an award-winning year-round host of cultural festivals, sporting events, major entertainment, and meetings/conventions - all while driving considerable economic and tourism prosperity to this small, historic city.

CBC 2015-03-26Charlottetown ( /ˈʃɑːrləttaʊn/; 2011 population: 34,562) is a Canadian city. It is both the largest city on and the provincial capital of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, Charlottetown was first incorporated as a town in 1855 and designated as a city in 1885. It was most famously the site of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian statesmen to debate the proposed Canadian Confederation. From this, the city adopted as its motto "Cunabula Foederis" -- "Birthplace of Confederation".
The population of the Charlottetown census agglomeration in the 2006 census was 58,625, slightly less than half of the province's population (135,851).
The first European settlers in the area were French; personnel from Fortress Louisbourg founded a settlement in 1720 named Port La Joye on the southwestern part of the harbour opposite the present-day city. This settlement was led by Michel Haché-Gallant, who used his sloop to ferry Acadian settlers from Louisbourg.
