On October 26, 1979, South Korean president and dictator Park Chung-hee was assassinated by his intelligence chief Kim Jae-kyu. Many people had hopes of democracy until this happened on December 12, 1979.
Background: On the day of assassination, Kim Jae-kyu invited Army Chief of Staff Jeong Seung-hwa to KCIA safehouse where Park Chung-hee was to be assassinated in hope of getting his support. Gwangju Democratization Movement May 1980 - FISUHistory - 35th CAMPUS Sport TV Show - FISU 2015
The Gwangju Democratization Movement, alternatively called May 18 Democratic Uprising by UNESCO,[4] (Hangul: 광주 민주화 운동; hanja: 光州民主化運動; RR: Gwangju Minjuhwa Undong), refers to a popular uprising in the city of Gwangju, South Korea from May 18 to 27, 1980.
Estimates suggest up to 606 people may have died. During this period, Gwangju citizens took up arms (by robbing local armories and police stations) when local Jeonnam University students - who were demonstrating against the Chun Doo-hwan government - were fired upon, killed, and beaten in an unprecedented attack by government troops.
The uprising eventually ended in defeat on May 27, 1980.

Documents show former Japanese Emperor Hirohito expressed regret over history
″Inevitable″ - that was how Japan described a formal apology for its historical wrongdoings back in 1984.
That historical record comes from documents released by Seoul′s foreign affairs ministry on Monday.
The documents detail former President Chun Doo-hwan′s 1984 trip to Tokyo.
In the lead-up to the trip,... the main focus of the agenda was whether or not then-Japanese Emperor Hirohito would comment or apologize for Japan′s past.
The documents show that Japan agreed that it was ″inevitable″ to comment on its history.
In the end, Hirohito expressed regret over the country′s colonial rule from 1910 to 1945 and said its historical atrociti
