This video was made as part of an assignment for the MOOC 'Miracles of Human Language' from the University of Leiden. This is my mother in Frisian (as it is spoken in the north of the Netherlands). She started learning Frisian at the age of six, after her family moved to the city of Drachten. At home she spoke Dutch. So strictly, she is not a native speaker. Still, I decided to do this instead of filming myself speaking Dutch, because I expect several other participants in the course will upload Dutch language video’s, and thought it would be more fun to contribute another language. Subtitles are by me. I don’t speak Frisain (I can only read it), so pardon me if I made any mistakes in the transcription.

About 1300 years ago the Frisians inhabited the dutch Coast, but also parts of Germany and Denmark. These days, they're largely contained in their own province of Frisia. They have their own flag, their own sports and in particular their own language: Frisian, or to put it in Frisian: it Frysk. Frisian is a mandatory subject in school and is therefore spoken by three quarters of the population. Most Frisians also speak Dutch, but as Frisian is an official language you can use it when dealing with the government and even in a court of law. Though it helps if your lawyer also speaks Frisian. If not, there's always Google Translate. Frisian is closely related to both English and Dutch. You can even take a university course in it, but oddly enough you have to go to Frisia’s neighbour, the pr...

Neste momento
E neste lugar
E aqui quando tudo acabou
Vou declarar o meu amor
E agora eu devia mais amar, amar, amar
Pra ver como eu estou
Pois nao dá mais
Pare de brincar
Com meu coraçao
Não vou segurar
Também nao vou
Sair desse lugar
Enquanto tu nao falar
Paro de brincar
Minha amiga
