Jhang (Punjabi, Urdu: جھنگ) is the capital city of Jhang District, in the state of Punjab, Pakistan. It is situated on the east bank of the Chenab river, about 210 kilometres from Lahore and 35 kilometres from Gojra. According to the 1998 census of Pakistan it had a population of 387,418
Jhang is situated at place where two rivers Jhelum and Chenab join together to make a great looking sight. It is situated on the left banks of both rivers. Jhang is the capital city of Jhang District located at the coordinates 31.30677 N, 72.32814 E.
Climate of Jhang has extreme summer and extreme winter like most areas of Pakistan, it has four seasons.
According to 1981 census of Pakistan population of Jhang was 1,970,944 with the 434,495 housing units in Jhang. In 1998 census, population of Jhang was 2,834,545, whose annually growth rate was 2.16%. Male population was 1,474,099 (52.00%) and female population was 1,360,446 (48.00%). Languages mostly spoken in Jhang are Punjabi and Urdu.
The area was inhabited at the time of Alexander but the present city of Jhang is said to have been founded in the twelwth century by Jalaluddin Surkh-Posh Bukhari. Its first inhabitants were sials who were his followers or murids. It was then destroyed by the river and re-founded during the reign of Aurangzeb by Mehboob Alam - called Shah Jewna - who asked his followers to settle again in that area in 1402. Under Mughal rule, the city flourished and was notable for commerce and trade.

Jhang District (Punjabi, Urdu: ضلع جھنگ) is a district of the Punjab province of Pakistan. The city of Jhang is the district's capital. According to the 1998 census of Pakistan, the district's population was 2.8 million, of which 23 percent lived in urban areas. By 2008, according to estimates, the population had risen to 3.5 million. The native language is Punjabi, though Urdu is also spoken in educational institutions.
Jhang is one of the oldest districts on the subcontinent, having been established around 2,000 BC, when it was known as Jhagi Sial. Jhang is bordered by Sargodha District to the north, Gujranwala District to the northeast, Faisalabad District and Toba Tek Singh District to the east, Khanewal and Muzaffargarh District to the south, Leiah District and Bhakkar District to the west, and Khushab District to the northwest.
The district comprises on four administrative units (tehsils) Jhang, Athara Hazari, Shorkot, and Ahmad Pur Sial.

May 30, 2010 greeted me again with brilliant sunshine. My host Lucas at the Posada de Babel, my rural hotel, had given me some tips as to where to go on this gorgeous day. So I set off and went eastwards along the Asturian coastline, past the golf course of Llanes and various coastal lookout points to the mountain town of Colombres. This scenic town is the location of the famous Museo del Emigrante. which focuses on the phenomenon of Asturian emigration to countries such as Cuba, Mexico and Argentina.
During the second half of the 19th and early 20th century Asturias experienced a major wave of emigration, and many of these emigrants, particularly those that had found great fortunes abroad, the so-called "Indianos", returned and built various mansions and grand villas. Indeed, the Emigrant Museum in Colombres itself is housed in an opulent villa built by a local emigrant who had struck it rich in Mexico.
The entire town of Colombres is a showcase of architecture created by these Indianos. Altogether the town features 12 major buildings that were created by these successful emigrants, which include the church and the city hall. Indianos would also often invest in and improve the local city infrastructure, for example, they would install the town's electrical supply and sewer system. After a visit to the Museum of Emigration I went on a walking tour of Colombres and visited many of these impressive manor houses that are conveniently signposted through town.
Then I headed back to the coastal village of Pimiango where I tried to find the Cueva del Pindal, a prehistoric cave. I never found the entrance to the cave, but I stumbled across a beautiful sea-side park with gorgeous views over a shoreline of steeply dropping rocks.
To return back to Llanes, I headed back into the mountains, part of the northeastern Picos de Europa, and drove through a serene landscape of high limestone peaks, covered with green meadows full of grazing cows and sheep. I returned back to my hotel, the Posada de Babel, in the early evening after a drive through the scenic Cares Gorge. Reyes, the hotel's chef, prepared a delicious vegetarian meal for me, consisting of baby potatoes and freshly harvested green beans, followed by my favourite dessert- rice pudding. I was joined by another hotel guest, an older gentleman from Mexico with Asturian roots who had come to do some business here in the land of his ancestors. Asturias had shown itself from its best side and I was sad that I had to leave tomorrow.

This is an update: Finally some GREAT news, thanks to efforts of private enthusiasts, civil society heritage bodies and the Culture and Tourism department of the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly NWFP) the fire engines rolled out of their shed in Gor Khatri for renovation in June 2010. Mohsin & Romano experts of the Vintage & Classic Car Club of Pakistan deserve credit for giving a new life to these priceless beauties, which were at the verge of turning into metal junk.
Maureen Lines' FHT, SCN, Albert Godin, Riaz Noor (ex Chief Sec NWFP) , Sufyan Kakakhel, Azam Khan MD STC and the museum authorities deserve credit for making this happen. A big thank you to all. Time line:- 2002: SCN report by Sufyan Kakakhel & Shaheen Buneri appeared in newspapers. 2005: Fire Engines were featured in Insight Travel Guide to Pakistan whose NWFP section was edited by me, 2007-8: Efforts to save the fire engines intensified. Albert Godin introduced Mohsin Ikram and Romano Karim Yusaf of VCCCP to SCN/ FHT. Ishrat Hayyat published a report in The News. 2009: FHT made a proposal for restoration and sent it to the Culture and Tourism Dept. Sarhad Tourism Coporation responded positively and recommended Culture Dept to sanction a sum of Rs 2 Million to FHT for their preservation. 2010: Fire Engines transported to a shed in University Town, Peshawar for renovation.

Travel Spain: Asturias -- Nature's Paradise
May 30, 2010 greeted me again with brilliant sunshine. My host Lucas at the Posada de Babel, my rural hotel, had given me some tips as to where to go on this gorgeous day. So I set off and went eastwards along the Asturian coastline, past the golf course of Llanes and various coastal lookout points to the mountain town of Colombres. This scenic town is the location of the famous Museo del Emigrante. which focuses on the phenomenon of Asturian emigration to countries such as Cuba, Mexico and Argentina. During the second half of the 19th and early 20th century Asturias experienced a major wave of emigration, and many of these emigrants, particularly those that had found great fortunes abroad, the so-called "Indianos", returned and built various mansions and grand villas. Indeed, the Emigrant Museum in Colombres itself is housed in an opulent villa built by a local emigrant who had struck it rich in Mexico. The entire town of Colombres is a showcase of architecture created by these Indianos. Altogether the town features 12 major buildings that were created by these successful emigrants, which include the church and the city hall. Indianos would also often invest in and improve the local city infrastructure, for example, they would install the town's electrical supply and sewer system. After a visit to the Museum of Emigration I went on a walking tour of Colombres and visited many of these impressive manor houses that are conveniently signposted through town. Then I headed back to the coastal village of Pimiango where I tried to find the Cueva del Pindal, a prehistoric cave. I never found the entrance to the cave, but I stumbled across a beautiful sea-side park with gorgeous views over a shoreline of steeply dropping rocks. To return back to Llanes, I headed back into the mountains, part of the northeastern Picos de Europa, and drove through a serene landscape of high limestone peaks, covered with green meadows full of grazing cows and sheep. I returned back to my hotel, the Posada de Babel, in the early evening after a drive through the scenic Cares Gorge. Reyes, the hotel's chef, prepared a delicious vegetarian meal for me, consisting of baby potatoes and freshly harvested green beans, followed by my favourite dessert- rice pudding. I was joined by another hotel guest, an older gentleman from Mexico with Asturian roots who had come to do some business here in the land of his ancestors. Asturias had shown itself from its best side and I was sad that I had to leave tomorrow.- published: 21 Jul 2010

Mohsin & Romano experts of the Vintage & Classic Car Club of Pakistan deserve credit for giving a new life to these priceless beauties, which were at the verge of turning into metal junk. Maureen Lines' FHT, SCN, Albert Godin, Riaz Noor (ex Chief Sec NWFP) , Sufyan Kakakhel, Azam Khan MD STC and the museum authorities deserve credit for making this happen. A big thank you to all. Time line:- 2002: SCN report by Sufyan Kakakhel & Shaheen Buneri appeared in newspapers. 2005: Fire Engines were featured in Insight Travel Guide to Pakistan whose NWFP section was edited by me, 2007-8: Efforts to save the fire engines intensified. Albert Godin introduced Mohsin Ikram and Romano Karim Yusaf of VCCCP to SCN/ FHT. Ishrat Hayyat published a report in The News. 2009: FHT made a proposal for restoration and sent it to the Culture and Tourism Dept. Sarhad Tourism Coporation responded positively and recommended Culture Dept to sanction a sum of Rs 2 Million to FHT for their preservation. 2010: Fire Engines transported to a shed in University Town, Peshawar for renovation.
