A metaphor is a literary figure of speech that describes a subject by asserting that it is, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated object. Metaphor is a type of analogy and is closely related to other rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance including allegory, hyperbole, and simile.
One of the most prominent examples of a metaphor in English literature is the All the world's a stage monologue from As You Like It:
This quote is a metaphor because the world is not literally a stage. By figuratively asserting that the world is a stage, Shakespeare uses the points of comparison between the world and a stage to convey an understanding about how the world works and the lives of the people within it.
The Philosophy of Rhetoric (1936), by I. A. Richards describes a metaphor as having two parts: the tenor and the vehicle. The tenor is the subject to which attributes are ascribed. The vehicle is the object whose attributes are borrowed. In the previous example, "the world" is compared to a stage, describing it with the attributes of “the stage”; "the world" is the tenor, and "a stage" is the vehicle; "men and women" is a secondary tenor, "players" is the secondary vehicle.
Jane Hirshfield (born 24 February 1953) is an American poet.
Jane Hirshfield was born in New York City and received her bachelor's degree from Princeton University in the school's first graduating class to include women. She later studied at the San Francisco Zen Center, including three years of monastic practice at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. She received lay ordination in Soto Zen in 1979.
Hirshfield has worked as a freelance writer, editor, and translator. Her seven books of poetry have each received numerous awards. Her fifth book, Given Sugar, Given Salt, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and her sixth collection, After, was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize (UK) and named a "best book of 2006" by The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, and the Financial Times. She has written a book of essays, Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry. The Ink Dark Moon, her co-translation of the work of the two foremost women poets of classical-era Japan, was instrumental in bringing tanka (a 31-syllable Japanese poetic form predating the better known haiku) to the attention of American poets. She has three edited books collecting the work of women poets.
George P. Lakoff ( /ˈleɪkɒf/, born May 24, 1941) is an American cognitive linguist and professor of linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 1972. Although some of his research involves questions traditionally pursued by linguists, such as the conditions under which a certain linguistic construction is grammatically viable, he is most famous for his ideas about the centrality of metaphor to human thinking, political behavior and society. He is particularly famous for his concept of the "embodied mind", which he has written about in relation to mathematics. In recent years he has applied his work to the realm of politics, exploring this in his books. He is a member of the scientific committee of the Fundacion IDEAS, Spain's Socialist Party's think tank. He was the founder of the now defunct progressive think tank the Rockridge Institute.
Lakoff began his career as a student and later a teacher of the theory of transformational grammar developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Noam Chomsky. In the late 1960s, however, he joined with others to promote generative semantics as an alternative to Chomsky's generative syntax. In an interview he stated:
Anaal Nathrakh are a British extreme metal band formed in 1999 who fuse black metal, grindcore, death metal and industrial music. They are currently signed to Candlelight Records.
The name comes from Merlin's Charm of Making in John Boorman's 1981 film Excalibur. According to Michael Everson's transcription, Anaal Nathrakh means "serpent's breath".
Anaal Nathrakh are typically described as black metal, despite eschewing the aesthetic of many black metal bands, such as dressing in a casual manner, as opposed to the corpsepaint and spiked leather clothing traditionally favoured by the black metal subculture. The band does not publish their lyrics.
Anaal Nathrakh, like many black metal bands, draw much inspiration from the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, exemplified by such song titles as "Human, All Too Fucking Human" and "Revaluation of All Values". All of Anaal Nathrakh's music is written, recorded and produced by Mick Kenney.
Anaal Nathrakh started off in 1998 as a raw black metal band. Two demos were released in 1999, Anaal Nathrakh and Total Fucking Necro. Following this, the band were signed by indie record label Mordgrimm, who released the duo's debut album, The Codex Necro, in 2001. In 2002, Anaal Nathrakh's first two demos were compiled into a single disc entitled Total Fucking Necro. This was released by the UK underground metal label Rage Of Achilles. In 2003, Mordgrimm released the band's first EP, When Fire Rains Down from the Sky, Mankind Will Reap as It Has Sown.
Keith Matthew Thornton, better known by his stage name Kool Keith, is an American rapper from The Bronx, New York. A founding member of Ultramagnetic MCs, Kool Keith has recorded prolifically both as a solo artist and in group collaborations. Kool Keith is the self-proclaimed inventor of horrorcore.
Kool Keith began his rap career with the group Ultramagnetic MCs. After the release of Critical Beatdown, Thornton was reportedly institutionalized in Bellevue Hospital Center. However, he later said that the idea that he was institutionalized came from a flippant remark made during a stressful interview and he never expected the story to become so well-known.
Thornton released his first notable solo single, "Earth People," in 1995, under the name Dr. Octagon, followed by the release of Dr. Octagonecologyst the following year. The album's production by Dan the Automator and Kutmasta Kurt, with scratching by DJ Qbert was acclaimed by critics, and the album was released nationally by DreamWorks Records, which also issued an instrumental version of the album, titled Instrumentalyst (Octagon Beats). Thornton followed the album with Sex Style in 1997 under the name Kool Keith.

Stole my pure intentions
You are the sickness in between
Let me in, I'll bury the pain
You taught me to be sad as you
You almost made me take it all
Let me in, I'll bury the pain
Bend me and you shake me
Make me then you break me
Let me in, I'll bury the pain
You made me feel like a sinner
You fear you'll die alone
Let me in, I'll bury the pain
The sickness that you are
A plague that made me starve
Do you think you can show me
How I've come this far?
The sickness that you are
A plague that made me starve
Do you think you can show me
How I've come this far?
I feel it's taking over
Everything falls dark
Break me open, the desperate cry
The sickness that you are
A plague that made me starve
Do you think you can show me
How I've come this far?
The sickness that you are
A plague that made me starve
Do you think you can show me
(I'm ready now, I'm ready to fuck now)
I go down to the ocean
I take a walk upon your shores
I dig up a big ol' hairy clam
And then take out the pearl
Cause it's a metaphor
I'll marinate your flank steak
I'll bread your jumbo shrimp
I'll take your little brother to the zoo
And I'll marinate your flank steak
Cause it's a metaphor for fuckin
It's a metaphor for fuckin
I'll be the lounge band on your cruise ship
I'll fuck you with my dick
I'll put my magic wand inside your... car
Then I'll marinate your flank steak
Cause it's a metaphor for flank steak
It's a metaphor for flank steak
Flank steak is delicious
Wish I was eatin it right now
And every time that I see one
Wanna titty fuck the flank steak
Cause it's a metaphor for fuckin flank steak
Yeah it's a metaphor for fuckin flank steak
I don't what to call her!
She's too vibrant for a name!
Should I call her...Juliet!
Yes, dear
Helena!
Yes, dear!
And Cassandra, and Cleopatra, and Beatrice
And also Guenevere
What dear?
I think she's there.
Can you hear me?
(...)
Speak a little louder!
I love you!
Ah ah ah ah aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
If I were in the desert deep in sand,
And the sun was burning like a hot pomegranate:
Walking through a nightmare in the heat of a summer day,
Until my mind was parch-ed!
Then you are water...
Cool, clear water...
A refreshing glass of water!
What dear?
Water!
Ah ah ah aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Love! You are love!
Better far than a metaphor
Can ever, ever be.
Love! You are love!
My mystery of love!
If the world was like an iceberg,
And everything was frozen,
And tears turned into icicles in the eye!
And snow came pouring
And sleet and ice
Came stabbing like a knife!
Then you are heat!
A fire alive with heat!
A flame that thaws the iceberg with its heat!
Repeat!
You are heat!
Ah ah ah ah aaaaaaaaaaa!
Love! (I am love!)
You are love! (I am love!)
Better far than a metaphor
Can ever, ever be.
Love! (I am love!)
You are love! (I am love!)
My mystery (His mystery)
Of love!
You are Polaris,
The one trustworthy star.
You are! (I am!)
You are! (I am!)
You are September,
A special mystery
To me! (To he!)
To me! (To he!)
You are sunlight! Moonlight!
Mountains! Valleys!
The microscopic inside of a leaf!
My joy! (Yes, I am his joy!)
My grief! (Yes, I am his grief!)
My star! (Yes, I am his star!)
My leaf! (Yes, I am his leaf!)
Oh. Love! (I am love!)
You are love! (I am love!)
Better far than a metaphor
Can ever, ever be.
Love! (I am love!)
You are love! (I am love!)
My mystery (His mystery)
Of love...
Love...
Love...!
