Plot
Drawing on accounts of the conquistador Hernando Cortes' attempt to settle Baja California, as well as 16th Century cartographies and a romance adventure novel ripe with Amazons. 'California is an Island' uses lushly shot re-enactments, animations of re-appropriated map graphics, and text to investigate the fantasies, fears and fetishes of European explorers with a post-colonial, queer lens and a bawdy sense of humor to boot.

The Amazons were a legendary nation of female warriors in Greek mythology.
Amazon is an eponym, derived from the legend, for any woman warrior or athlete, including:

Jeffrey Preston "Jeff" Bezos (/beɪzəs/, born January 12, 1964) is an American entrepreneur who played a key role in the growth of e-commerce as the founder and chief executive officer of Amazon.com, Inc., an online merchant of books and later of a wide variety of products. Under his guidance, Amazon.com became the largest retailer on the World Wide Web and the model for Internet sales.
Bezos was born Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Jacklyn Gise Jorgensen and Ted Jorgensen. His maternal ancestors were settlers who lived in Texas, and over the generations acquired a 25,000 acre (101 km2 or 39 miles2) ranch in Cotulla. Bezos' maternal grandfather was a regional director of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in Albuquerque. He retired early to the ranch, where Bezos spent many summers as a youth, working with him. At an early age, Bezos displayed a striking mechanical aptitude – as a toddler, he tried dismantling his crib with a screwdriver.
Bezos was born to a teenage mother in Albuquerque. Her marriage to his father lasted little more than a year. When Jeff was five, she remarried, this time to Miguel Bezos. Miguel was born in Cuba, immigrated to the United States alone when he was fifteen years old, worked his way through the University of Albuquerque, married, and legally adopted Jeff. After the marriage, the family moved to Houston, Texas, and Miguel became an engineer for Exxon. The young Bezos attended River Oaks Elementary School in Houston from fourth to sixth grade. As a child, he spent summers at his grandfather's ranch in southern Texas, "laying pipe, vaccinating cattle and fixing windmills."
There is a river that runs from the mountains
That one river is all rivers
All rivers are that one
There is a tree that stands in the forest
That one tree is all forests
All trees are that one
There is a flower that blooms in the desert
That one blossom is all flowers
All flowers are that one
There is a bird that sings in the jungle
That one song is all music
All songs are that one
It is the song of life
It is the flower of faith
It is the tree of temptation
It is the river of no regret
There is a child that cries in the ghetto
That one child is all children
All children are that one
There is a vision that shines in the darkness
That one vision is all of our dreams
It is a vision of heaven
It is a child of promise
It is the song of life
It is the river of no regret
Let this be a voice for the mountains
Let this be a voice for the river
Let this be a voice for the forest
Let this be a voice for the flowers
Let this be a voice for the ocean
Let this be a voice for the desert
Let this be a voice for the children
Let this be a voice for the dreamers
By the time you're natural
By the time you die
I'll take my head and spin it for you
I'll just look around
And I call you liar
And I call you dead
You've come and poisoned all the things
That I once sat upon
Everybody's hungry
Everybody's high
We'll sit around and ask ourselves
If it was all a lie
And I already told you
And I already see
But you have got to know yourself
And so I let it slide
Can we be together
Can you hold my hand
It takes forever
For the sound to get around
And I already love you
And I already want
But will we all
Adam Ant/Marco Pirroni
Just stay out of my face
And get out of this place
Stop pulling my string
If you want a nice face
None so dull as spoken word
Things like "girls be seen not heard"
And when she fights you back
Don't call her Amazon
Be very quiet,
Nothing to say
Talk like a nice boy
And you'll be O.K.
You dig
A slice of heaven is what you are
Said Mary Joe in her little car
A slice of heaven is what you are
Now sensual big ladies are
Stranger in town
Plenty of cash
But you're in the wrong place friend
If you want to be flash
Dig it
The sweetest girl I ever knew
Was six feet four with eyes of blue
She's so wonderful
Don't call her Amazon
A slice of heaven is what you are
Said Mary Joe in her sports car
Such a darling child
Don't call her Amazon

Somewhere on the edge of time
You hear a plaintive song
Remembering a way of life
That seemed to go on and on and on
What can we offer them now
In a world that has turned from grace
The jungle is burning so fast
The smoke can be seen from space
I walk along these smokey city streets
Within these jungle walls it's so hard to breathe
I heard the news and it's been eating at me
They're tearing down the last of the amazon trees
The poor have need of the land, they say
But the soil is thin and ends up blowin' away
What about a million years of history
And the creatures who inhabit this great mystery
We've got to buy back the amazon
We've got to give the earth a chance to carry on
If it's money they need let's give them all that they want
We've got to buy back the amazon
Buy back the amazon
We carry on and keep it all inside
But the time will come when there'll be nowhere to hide
With all we're spending on our wars in space
Why can't we save the mother of the human race
We've got to buy back the amazon
We've got to give the earth a chance to carry on
If it's money they need let's give them all that they want
We've got to buy back the amazon
Buy back the amazon
Buy back the amazon
Save it now so we can pass it on
Wake up! our future's almost gone
We've got to buy back the amazon
We've got to give the earth a chance to carry on
Inside my dream
I hear the jungle parrots scream
Just me and you
Alone in our dugout canoe
We kiss
The snakes hiss
We drift on
Amazon
Each day we fight
To stay alive
Make love each night
Drunk with desire
Asleep beside the jungle fire
We are
Like jaguar
And python

In the morning we eat roast banana
In the evening we drink maté tea
And the waterfall water's sweet
In the green equatorial heat

Like the river we journey
Like the river we journey to the
I was missin' in action
On the side of a carton
I was taken in a Datsun
From a street in Action
I was sipping on a Rubicon
Thinking 'bout where I come
Its all this for revolution
Cuttin' up the coupon
Savin for a telephone
Can I call home
Please Can I go Home
Painted nails, sunsets on horizons
Palm trees silhouette smells amazing
Blindfolds under home made lanterns
Somewhere in the Amazon
They're holding me Ransom
Hello This is M.I.A.
Could you please Come get me
Smoking on a Benson
Tryin' to get me undone
Let Me Go
I don't want your attention
Under Submission
Out of frustration I'll do it
I'll scream for the nation
Painted nails, sunsets on horizons
Palm trees silhouette smells amazing
Blindfolds under home made lanterns
Somewhere in the Amazon
They're holding me Ransom
Hello This is M.I.A.
Could you please Come get me
Minutes turned to hours
And Became our dates
When We Shared raindrops
That turned into Lakes
Bodies started Merging
And the lines got grey
Now I'm looking at him thinking
Maybe He's okay
Hello This is M.I.A
There Was a place
Where man, women and children
Lived in peace with nature
Worshiped mother nature gods
Rain forest gave all their needs
They Drank water from it's Rivers
And ate all food they could collect
Now, the trees keep falling down
Trees are cuted down
Trees are falling down
Than came the white men
Colonizer with fire weapons and greed
Killed the man,
Raped the women,
Enslaved their children
Cutted down the trees
Poluted the rivers
(And) hunted like a predator

Is turning into a desert hell
They said the indians had no soul
As said their partners from crime the Pope.
They forced them to be bathized
So they could pacify them as sheep no risk of Rebelion
Now Companies profit with (forest ) royalties
Will they never stop?
