The Voice UK's Ricky Wilson: 'I have a crippling competitive streak'

By
The Voice UK's Ricky Wilson has admitted that he said he wasn't returning to the show because that's the "cool thing" to do.

Speaking at the launch of the fourth series yesterday, Kaiser Chiefs frontman Wilson confessed that he "must have" been missing filming the series, prompting his decision to return.

"A few weeks after it finished, I thought, 'You know what, I wouldn't mind going back'," he said. "I was saying I wasn't going to go back because it's the cool thing to do, but I then had to figure out a way of telling the guys in the band that I was coming back.

"So yeah, I must have been missing it because I really enjoyed the first year. I think I've enjoyed this one more. I'm a lot more relaxed - not that confident, still, but a lot more relaxed."

However, Wilson explained that his return to The Voice does not necessarily rule out more Kaiser Chiefs music, saying: "The thing is, I've learnt from Tom and Rita and Will that successful people work every day. It's not actually working - they say playing in a band, not working in a band.

"So it's given me a real boost doing this, because I've realised that although I love sitting on the sofa watching crap TV, I love being in a band and singing more. No-one wants to hear a moaning popstar, do they, moaning about how hard it is? Because at the end of the day it's not bad. It's easy."

Wilson also revealed that he likes how competitive new coach Rita Ora is, admitting that he is the same.

"We wouldn't make it if we didn't have a massive competitive streak that was sometimes crippling, because you have to," he said. "That's what we tell everyone we coach as well - as soon as you lose that competitive edge, you've lost, because you've got to win it.

"I never enter a competition I don't think I can win, which is terrible. I won't play snooker in a pub because I'm not very good at it, even for fun, because losing would kill me. It's the same with this game, isn't it? You've got to think you can win it until you walk out there."

However, Wilson explained that he doesn't have a strategy to secure victory for one of his acts this year, saying: "No tactics at all. I thought about that a lot and then I eventually thought, 'You know what, if I start thinking about tactics - that's what Will does'. It works for him, though. It wouldn't work for me. I'm not that clever!"

The Voice UK returns for its fourth series on Saturday (December 10) at 7pm on BBC One.
