Stocks soar as Fed boost lingers

Stocks are jumping Thursday as good feelings about the Fed's Wednesday announcement that rate hikes aren't on the immediate horizon carry over into a second day. As of 12:30 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P; 500 and Nasdaq composite are up about 1.5% each. The blue-chip Dow's gain is about 260 points. "Fed-induced optimism sent the Dow to its best day of the year yesterday, and the blue-chip barometer is set to pick up right where it left off," Karee Venema of Schaeffer's Investment Research noted early in the day. European stock investors also were reassured by the Fed's comments. An easy Fed also benefits Eurozone companies as it suggests that the U.S. economy -- which has been growing at a roughly 4% clip the past two quarters -- will remain healthy, providing a demand boost to Eurozone firms that sell goods and services to the Americans. The good market news comes in the wake of volatility churned in recent days by a plunging Russian ruble and cratering oil prices. The ruble has stabilized somewhat, now trading for about 60 to one U.S. dollar. Oil has found a floor, at least for now: A barrel of West Texas intermediate crude is up slightly at a few cents above $58. Remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin in a long, three-hour news conference led the ruble to a 2.3% drop -- modest compared to a huge, 23% plunge on Tuesday. The surprising thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations announced by President Obama on Wednesday is having a two-day impact on the Herzfeld Caribbean Basin Fund, which invests in business related to the Caribbean island. The fund -- ticker, CUBA -- is up about about 3% after having soared 28.9% the previous session. Wednesday and Thursday's market action shows that after a brief bout of turbulence, a risk-on mentality has returned to financial markets largely due to the Fed. Investors' positive vibes spring from the Fed's Wednesday afternoon statement that it could raise near-zero short-term interest rates, but in a matter of months and amid an accelerating economy. In its final policy statement of the year, the Fed said that it "can be patient in beginning to normalize the stance of monetary policy." Stocks took a giant leap on the resulting perception that the Fed won't rush into rate hikes. The Dow had its best day of 2014, closing the day up 288 points, or 1.7%, to 17,356.87. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index gained 2% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 1%. The Shanghai composite fell 0.1%. Following the fallout of the slide in the Russian ruble, which has lost more than half of its value in recent months, Switzerland sought Thursday to prevent the Swiss franc from breaching upper limits imposed on the currency by introducing negative interest rates on commercial bank deposits.

Stocks are jumping Thursday as global markets advance and as investors' good feelings about the Fed's Wednesday announcement regarding interest rates are carrying over into a second day. As of 11:13 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P; 500 and Nasdaq composite are up 1.1% or a little more. The blue-chip Dow's gain is about 185 points. "Fed-induced optimism sent the Dow to its best day of the year yesterday, and the blue-chip barometer is set to pick up right where it left off," Karee Venema of Schaeffer's Investment Research noted early in the day. U.S. stocks are rebounding today. The catalyst: stabilization in the oil market and Russia’s battered currency. In late-morning trading the Dow Jones industrial average is up 153 points, or 0.9%, to 17,222. The Dow, which has been dragged down by fears related to the fallout of plunging oil prices, which are 50% from their highs and the worst slide ever for the Russian ruble, started the day 5% off its Dec. 5 record high. But stocks got a respite from the turbulence and all the selling — at least for the time being — thanks to signs of stabilization in the oil and currency markets. Thanks to intervention by the Russian government to prop up the ruble, the battered currency is up nearly 9% vs. the U.S. dollar. In today’s trading, $1 U.S. dollar only fetches 61.8696 rubles. At its weakest point Tuesday, a U.S. buck bought you nearly 80 rubles, marking a record low for the ruble versus the greenback. Similary, a barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude after a rocky start to trading today, is now up 0.6% to $57.50 a barrel. If the jitters in financial markets are to ease, oil prices and the ruble must stabilize.

Stocks are gaining Wednesday as rattled investors look forward to a 2 p.m. ET Fed announcement that is expected to signal a green-light for rate increases in the near future. As of 11:32 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P; 500 and Nasdaq are up 0.7% or a little more each -- the blue-chip index gaining more than 100 points. Plunging prices at the gas pump pulled down U.S. consumer prices by the largest amount in six years last month, the Labor Department said Wednesday. The consumer price index fell 0.3% as gasoline prices fell lower for the fifth straight month. European stocks are mixed as oil prices dip. Brent crude is down 0.3%, while West Texas Intermediate crude is off 0.9% to a few dimes above $56 a barrel. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index gained 0.4%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.4%.The Shanghai composite gained 1%. Russia's embattled ruble is stabilizing at about 62 to one U.S. dollar, an increase for the day of more than 8%. Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Moiseyev was quoted by the Interfax news agency Wednesday as saying that it is going to sell foreign currency from its treasury accounts "as much as necessary and as long as necessary." The hope is that it would relieve the pressure on the ruble, particularly against the dollar. The currency lost over 19% of its value this week as oil prices — the country's main source of revenue — continued to slide and Tuesday's massive interest rate hike by the Russian Central Bank failed to halt its steady fall. The Federal Reserve is due to issue a statement Wednesday following a a two-day policy meeting. Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com, said he expects the Fed to finally jettison from its post-meeting statement the phrase "considerable period of time," which refers to how long interest rates will be maintained at the current, near 0% levels. McBride says now is an "opportune time" for the Fed "to start conditioning markets" for the eventuality of interest rate hikes in 2015.

Falling Oil Prices Push Stocks Lower, Dow Slides 300 Points - TheStreet

It was a rough day for stocks. The S&P; 500 fell to its lowest level since October, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 315 points. Today's losses were largely on the heels of low oil prices, which closed under $60 at $57.72, down 3.7%. Falling fuel prices also sent shares of oil companies sharply lower. Exxon Mobil and BP fell almost 3%, while Chevron closed down 2.4%. While hurting stocks, falling oil prices is giving consumers a bit more confidence. The Reuters/University of Michigan's consumer confidence reading surged to 93.8 compared to an estimated 89.5.
