Protesters carried placards reading 'Communists have already ruled Thuringia' and 'Thuringia needs no Linke Prime Minister.' Protesters voiced their disagreement with Die Linke politician Bodo Ramelow, who on Friday is likely to be elected as Minister-President at a Thuringia state assembly vote. If elected, Ramelow would succeed Christine Lieberknecht, who hails from German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Die Linke was founded in 2007 from the merger of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) - a successor to the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) that ruled the former East Germany - and the Electoral Alternative for Labour and Social Justice (WASG), which had broken away from the Social Democratic Party (SPD).
