Umayyad family tree

This is a family tree of the Umayyad dynasty, whose name derives from Umayya ibn Abd Shams. Umayya's great-grandson Muawiyah I founded the Umayyad Caliphate in 661, and transferred its capital to Damascus, Syria. The Sufyanid branch to which Muawiyah belonged ceased to exercise power following the abdication of Muawiya II in 684. Power shifted to the Marwanid branch, which continued to rule the caliphate until the Umayyads were displaced and massacred by the Abbasids in 750 (see Battle of the Zab). An Umayyad prince named Abd ar-Rahman managed to escape the massacre, and fled to the Iberian peninsula (Al-Andalus) where he established an independent emirate ruled from the city of Córdoba. His descendants continued to rule the Emirate of Córdoba, which Abd-ar-Rahman III elevated to the status of caliphate in 929. The Caliphate of Córdoba disintegrated into several independent taifa kingdoms in 1031, thus bringing to a definitive end the rule of the Umayyads.

A family tree, or pedigree chart, is a chart representing family relationships in a conventional tree structure. The more detailed family trees used in medicine and social work are known as genograms.

Family history representations

Genealogical data can be represented in several formats, for example as a pedigree or ancestry chart. Family trees are often presented with the oldest generations at the top and the newer generations at the bottom. An ancestry chart, which is a tree showing the ancestors of an individual, will more closely resemble a tree in shape, being wider at the top than the bottom. In some ancestry charts, an individual appears on the left and his or her ancestors appear to the right. A descendancy chart, which depicts all the descendants of an individual will be narrowest at the top.

Family trees can have many themes. One might encompass all direct descendants of a single figure, or all known ancestors of a living person. Another might include all members of a particular surname (e.g. male-line descendants). Yet another approach is to construct a tree including all holders of a certain office, such as kings of Germany. This relies on dynastic marriage to hold together the links between dynasties.

Picking Up the Pieces (Jewel album)

Picking Up the Pieces is the twelfth studio album from American singer-songwriter Jewel, released on September 11, 2015, through Sugar Hill Records. Self-produced, the album is said to be a bookend to her 1995 debut album, Pieces of You.

Background and writing

The announcement for the album came on July 1, 2015, as part of Jewel's monthly "EDA INCLUSIVE" series on her website. In the same post she describes the writing process:

"My focus for this CD was to forget everything I have learned about the music business the last 20 years and get back to what my bones have to say about songs and words and feeling and meaning...It took real effort to clear my thoughts and have no rules and just create - going back to my folk/American roots that I began with."

The album features new material as well as songs Jewel has been playing live since the mid-nineties but never recorded. One of the new tracks, "My Father's Daughter," is a collaboration with Dolly Parton.
