Since the end of the age of sail a ship has been any large buoyant marine vessel. Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size and cargo or passenger capacity. Ships are used on lakes, seas, and rivers for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing, entertainment, public safety, and warfare. Historically, a "ship" was a vessel with sails rigged in a specific manner.
Ships and boats have developed alongside mankind. In armed conflict and in daily life they have become an integral part of modern commercial and military systems. Fishing boats are used by millions of fishermen throughout the world. Military forces operate vessels for combat and to transport and support forces ashore. Commercial vessels, nearly 35,000 in number, carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2007.
Ships were key in history's great explorations and scientific and technological development. Navigators such as Zheng He spread such inventions as the compass and gunpowder. Ships have been used for such purposes as colonization and the slave trade, and have served scientific, cultural, and humanitarian needs. After the 16th century, new crops that had come from and to the Americas via the European seafarers significantly contributed to the world's population growth. Maritime transport has shaped the world's economy into today's energy-intensive pattern.
We walked to the sea
just my father and me
and the dogs played around on the sand
Winter cold cut the air
hangin' still everywhere
Dressed in gray, did he say
"hold my hand"?
I said "love's easier
when it's far away"
We sat and watched a distant light
(chorus)
We're two ships that pass in the night
We both smile and we say it's alright
We're still here
It's just that were out of sight
Like those ships that pass in the night
There's a boat on the line
where the sea meets the sky
there's another that rides far behind
And it seems you and I are like strangers
a wide ways apart as we drift on through time
He said "it's harder now, we're far away"
We only read you when you write
(chorus 2x)
We're just two ships that pass in the night
We both smile and we say it's alright
We're still here
Mariyln Monroe was so tired,
She was so tired, she was so tired
City girl lost in a field of rye
And see what she has done
Now she's out on a boat on the ocean
Turning around and around
Sail for a dress and her hand on her breast
Out on the rolling sea
Out on the rolling sea
John Wayne was so sick
He was so thick, he was up a crick
Cowboy lost in a long steel hall
And see what he has done
Now he's out on a boat on the ocean
Turning around and around
Lashed to the mast and free at last
Out on the rolling sea
Out on the rolling sea
Elvis Presley was so fat
They gave him all that, just to stand pat
Jaguar lost in a living room
And you see what he has done
Now he's out on a boat on the ocean
Turning around and around
The dolphins gather to hear him moan
Out on the rolling sea
Out on the rolling sea
And will you rock the boat, Mr. Presley?
Will you let us see it, Miss Monroe?
Will you save us, Mr. John Wayne, sir?
We come so far to go back alone
We come so far
All the long ships are sailing away
With one little candle to light the way
'til they come to a place where the sun goes down
And they all start turning around
And they all start turning around
(Gretchen Peters)
Eddie had a few days comin'
So he took a Las Vegas jaunt
Out to the land of supply and demand
Where you can get anything you want
He wasn't lookin' for true love
No, he didn't believe in that stuff
Eddie LeGrande was a hard workin' man
Who just needed a little good luck
His shoes were a little worn
His hair was a little thin
Just another old sailor
Waitin' on his ship to come in
Lily was a two time loser
Who said that love was just a roll of the dice
She acted real tough, said once ain't enough
For me I learned my lesson twice
But deep in her heart lived a young girl
Dreamin' a young girl's dream
And that young girl was who Eddie ran into
Over by the slot machines
Her face was a little pale
Her dress was a little thin
Oh but lookin' at her was like
Watchin' his ship come in
Well, he bought her a cup of coffee
With the quarters he meant to play
They went for a bite and they talked all night
'Til they said what they needed to say
Then they found 'em an all night chapel
With a heart shaped honeymoon suite
And somewhere tonight in the neon light
Two hearts can't be beat
And he's singin' a little song
She's grinnin' a little grin
And they're holdin' each other
Watchin' their ship to come in
Her face was a little pale
His hair was a little thin
But they're two young lovers
Watchin' their ship to come in
Just holdin' each other
Watchin' their ship to come in
We walked to the sea, just my father and me
And the dogs played around on the sand
Winter cold cut the air, hanging still everywhere
Dressed in gray did he say hold my hand?
I said love's easier when it's far away
We sat and watched the distant lights
We're two ships that pass in the night
And we smile when we say it's alright
We're still here, it's just that we're out of sight
Like those ships that pass in the night, yeah
There's a boat on the line where the sea meets the sky
There's another that rides far behind
And it seems, you and I are like strangers
Wide ways apart as we drift on through time
He said it's harder now, you're far away
We only read you when you write
We're two ships that pass in the night
We both smile when we say it's alright
We're still here, oh, it's just that we're out of sight
Like those ships that pass in the night
We're just two ships that pass in the night
We're just two ships that pass in the night
We're just two ships that pass in the night
We're just two ships that pass in the night
We're just two ships that pass in the night
We're just two ships that pass in the night
Ships that pass in the night
Even ships of the night
Send out the alarm
My face is turning white
In case of emergency
I wonder if I might slow down rest up
I'd like to get away
If my doctor lets me
Here in my waiting room
I'm pacing nervously
But I'm no give-away
Deep down messed up
Hit town dressed up
To the nines, to the nines, to the nines, to the nines
Some people pop a pill, when they feel exposed
Long as I'm dressed to kill
I'll make sure no-one knows
Disguised in fancy-dress
Deep down, messed up
Hit town dressed up
To the nines, to the nines, to the nines, my disguise
(mind your step)
Deep down, messed up
Hit town dressed up
To the nines, to the nines, to the nines, to the nines
The tide is on the brink of extinction
The sky is on the verge of collapse
The birds and the trees all are falling like leaves
The memories are floating away
The cabins on the shore are abandoned
The streets are just a river of dust
The ships on the bay all go sailing away
Hey! How are you?
It's been such a long time
How've you been
You're looking just fine
Like the day we met
Was that '78?
Funny how quickly we forget
Ships that pass
In the night
Changing signals
See the light and they're gone...
They're gone
You're standing there
We both struggle for things to say
Like we're strangers
I guess we are anyway
Ships that pass
In the night
Changing signals
See the light and they're
Ships that pass
In the night
Changing signals
See the light and they're gone...
They're gone
Funny how little we knew about each other
When all the time we both thought we were lovers
But those were good times we had
I can remember
How we'd walk down by the bay
And talk about tomorrow
Now tomorrow is yesterday
Ships that pass
In the night
Changing signals
See the light and
Ships that pass
In the night
Changing signals
See the light and
Ships that pass
In the night
Changing signals
See the light and they're gone...
They're gone
Know your lover
Get to know her
Know your lover
Ships Lyrics
Just like ships, we float through each other's lives
Through the waters of beauty and grace
We will one day dock at the same port
And give rest to our weary legs
There is a light placed up in the sky
Like the stained glass, time slows down
I wish I could sleep, I wish I could dream
I love the sound of my feet against these empty streets
I saw the whole town burn down
I'm walking away
Nothing stays, these feelings have wings
Our arms outstretched, we are soaring
There is a light placed up in the sky
Like the stained glass, time slows down
I wish I could sleep
I wish I could dream
There is a light placed up in the sky
Like the stained glass, time slows
I wish I could sleep
I lay my head on your thighs
And close my eyes
And think of
All of our days
Fast moving months
They pass us by
For me things take time
To seep in, into this mind
All over this place
My opinions fly
We went blind
Into this standing
No pattern to follow
Only, go here now
All over this place
I am not my own
I want to be just like you
And I, I want to be free on my insides
And prefer to raise others
Above, above myself
When you're asleep
I miss you the most
You're already five years
I feel tossed to and fro
All over this place
Playing is calling my name
Papa, papa, papa, papa
Papa, papa, papa, papa
Papa, papa, I am not my own
All over this place
Playing is calling my name
I want to be just like you
And I, I want to be free on my insides
And prefer to raise others
Above, above myself
When it comes to you I?ve been lazy
But now I need you
I put down myself just to hide
Right behind, oh you, you
When it comes to you I?ve been lazy
But now I need you
I put down myself just to hide
Right behind, oh you, you
I want nothing
Of the world in me
