Plot: Alan Johnson has everything he needs to get through life: a good job, a beautiful and loving wife, and their wonderful children. Yet he feels isolated because he finds having a hard-working job and managing a family too much to handle and has no one to talk to about it. Charlie Fineman, on the other hand, doesn't have a job or a family. He used to have both until a terrible loss, and the grief caused him to quit his job and isolate himself from everyone around him. As it turns out, Alan and Charlie were roommates in college, and a chance encounter one night rekindles the friendship they shared. But when Charlie's problems become too much to deal with, Alan is determined to help Charlie come out of his emotional abyss.

Quotes:
Alan Johnson: I was stuck in Charlie world, I couldn't leave.
Charlie Fineman: Can he go out? Is he allowed out?::Alan Johnson: Don't do that, dont ask my wife permisson for me to go out.::Charlie Fineman: Alright, you're right. Can you go out?::[Alan looks at Janeane]
Sugarman: He likes you Alan, you know why? Because you know nothing about his family.
Charlie Fineman: You're a good husband Alan. You remind me of me.
Charlie Fineman: Are you a faggot?.::Alan Johnson: Don't say faggot, you just don't call people faggot that's rude.::Charlie Fineman: To a gay guy it is, to you it's just a funny word like poundcake or pickle... You really need some Mel.::Charlie Fineman: [ordering tickets] Take one adult and one faggot.
Alan Johnson: Better bring out the big guns on this one. She's crazy with a side of crazy!
Charlie Fineman: I don't need to talk about her or look at pictures... 'cause the truth is, a lot of times, I see her... on the street. I walk down the street, I see her in someone else's face... clearer than any of the pictures you carry with you. I get that you're in pain, but you got each other. You got each other! And I'm the one who's gotta see her and the girls all the time. Everywhere I go! I even see the dog. That's how fucked up I still am! I look at a German shepherd, I see our goddamn poodle. All right... All right...
Charlie Fineman: I have no one. At least you two have each other. [Charlie kisses Ginger Timplemen, his mother-in-law, on her cheek and walks away]
Charlie Fineman: [Charlie looks at Alan] I had three daughters.::Alan Johnson: [surprised] I... I know.::Charlie Fineman: Geena was five. Jenny was seven, she, uh... she liked boys already. Julie was 9. She was... she was older. They all looked alike, Johnson. Like Doreen. Doreen was my wife. DT. That was her nickname. Doreen Timpleman. She had a dog, Spider. Spider... the poodle. They'd wake me up all the time, Saturday mornings, you know, singing Beatles songs to me in harmony, the four of them... so cute, so cute. Doreen never judged me... never nagged like some wives do. Wanted me to take my shoes off so I didn't wreck the carpet. That's it. Doreen and the girls were VERY female. I... I... I was the oddball, you know. Mr. Man. They adored me, Johnson...::Alan Johnson: I bet they did... I know they did, Charlie.::Charlie Fineman: With the long brown hair... except little Geena. She kept the hair short... to be different from everybody... she, um, she had a birthmark, though. Looked like a burn... but it wasn't. She always said it was gonna go away, but it... it never did. Jenny, Jenny, this one... she wanted to be a gymnast. She was such a klutz, though. I didn't have the heart to mention it as a problem. They, uh, went to see Doreen's sister Ellen and her girls in Boston, and they took Spider, because... I had to work and they didn't trust me to feed her, but that was a joke. We were all going to DT's little cousin's wedding in Los Angeles, and I was gonna meet them out there... The kids wanted to go to Disneyland, but they... they uh, were already gonna miss a couple days of school, so we had to say no. You know. So I'm going out to meet them in Los Angeles, and on the way to JFK, I'm in a taxicab and I hear on the radio... [slowly starts to cry] I get there and the man tells me the plane's from Boston... another man tells me there's two planes. [sobs] Then I go inside the airport and I'm watching. I'm watching on the television... and I... and I... I... I saw it. I saw it and I felt it at the same time. I thought about Geena's birthmark, and I... I felt them burning...
Angela Oakhurst: I disagree strongly with that finding. Your Honor, I think that Charlie needs to find his own way. Not on our time, but on Charlie's time, and I think that will happen. He'll find people that will fill his life again. Not today, but soon... slowly.::Mr. Fallon: Can I just ask a question about your life experience in regard to this long-term illness? I'm curious, how old are you?::Charlie Fineman: What does that have to do with anything?::Judge Raines: Dr. Fineman...::Charlie Fineman: That question sucks, your Honor.::Mr. Fallon: It's actually a good question.::Charlie Fineman: No, no, no! It sucks. It sucks. You know if we're gonna talk about age... he's gotta go to little league practice.

Quotes:
James Mink: We have been to the Queen's militia, Lord Elgin, and to the American embassy and no one's been able to do a thing about it. Now then, I'm desperate. We need your help.::Lord Elgin: Well of course. I'll file letters of protest with President Fillmore and the Governor of Virginia. [sighs] But apart from that, there's little I can do.::James Mink: Are you saying that there's nothing you can do to get the Americans to co-operate?::Lord Elgin: Mr. Mink, please try to understand. Our relations with the States is - strained at best. Now, giving refuge to their fugitive slaves hasn't helped matters. We're in no position to make strong demands against Washington. I'm sorry.::James Mink: Lord Elgin, my daughter is being held against her will in a foreign country. Are you saying that the Governor General of Upper Canada is just going to *abandon* her!?::Elizabeth Mink: James, we've taken enough of Lord Elgin's time.
James Mink: We'll need lodging.::Risser: You'll stay here tonight but from now on, you will travel *only* by day. [points to map] There are safe houses here, here and here. Make sure you reach them by sundown. When you get to Newcastle, find the Quaker church first thing, and the Minister there will help you the rest of the way.::James Mink: Why the Quakers?::Risser: Down South, Mr. Mink, belief in Jesus is no sure sign of goodness; except among the foot-washers.
James Mink: So, Reverend, how far is this Clay plantation?::Rev. Eli Brennemen: A good hour's ride from here.::James Mink: Good. We can get there by nightfall.::Rev. Eli Brennemen: Mr. Mink, I caution you about being too hasty. Getting a slave off a plantation is very dangerous. Before we do anything, we're going to need a plan.::James Mink: Mary is not a slave, sir. And I already have a plan. We'll slip in there by nightfall, and we'll get Mary out.::Rev. Eli Brennemen: You might manage that. You might even get her all the way back to town. But how do you plan to get out of Virginia with every marshal and slave catcher from here to the border looking for a fair-skinned runaway, a colored man and a white woman? Mr. Mink, if you're caught, *you* could be sold as a slave, and Elizabeth could be jailed. And you don't want to know what will happen to Mary if they have to send her back to the Clay plantation.::Elizabeth Mink: Tell us what we must do.
