A bus turnout, bus pullout, bus bay, bus lay-by (UK), or off-line bus stop is a special zone on the side of the main roadway (or bus/tram lane) for primarily buses to stop for a designated bus stop in order to pick up and drop off passengers. The purpose of the bus turnout is avoid blocking a lane of traffic and to improve passenger safety during boarding and deboarding. Bus turnouts may also be the location of minor bus termini, and may be extended to accommodate bus stands.
Bus turnouts are most often lacking in cities with little or no usable right-of-way for their construction. In younger cities, particularly in the United States, where there is sufficient right-of-way bus turnouts are installed on roads either as part of upgrading the road or installed by requirement of the local government during development of the lot.
A disadvantage of bus turnouts is that buses must merge back into the flow of traffic after using the bus stop, which can cause delay to the bus. Although many jurisdictions worldwide have instituted yield to bus laws, motorist compliance with these laws is often non-existent.
Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is an American politician who has been the U.S. Representative for Texas's 14th congressional district, which includes Galveston, since 1997, and a three-time candidate for President of the United States, as a Libertarian in 1988 and as a Republican in 2008 and currently 2012. He is an outspoken critic of American foreign and monetary policies, including the Military–industrial complex and the Federal Reserve, and is known for his libertarian-leaning views, often differing from his own party on certain issues.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. He served as a medical officer in the United States Air Force from 1963 until 1968. He worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist from the 1960s to the 1980s, delivering more than 4,000 babies. He became the first Representative in history to serve concurrently with a child in the Senate when his son Rand Paul was elected to the United States Senate for Kentucky in 2010.
Peter Maitland Corroon (born July 16, 1964) is the current mayor of Salt Lake County, Utah, and a member of the Democratic Party. He was the Democratic candidate for governor in the Utah gubernatorial election, 2010, losing to Gary Herbert by a 33 point margin. He is first cousin to Howard Dean, former Vermont governor and former head of the Democratic National Committee.
Corroon graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1986. He obtained a law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law and a master's from New York University in real estate. For a time, Corroon ran a small development company.
In November 2008, Corroon was re-elected to a second term as Salt Lake County Mayor over Republican challenger Michael Renckert with 66% of the vote. In January 2010, Corroon announced his candidacy for governor of the state of Utah to challenge incumbent Republican Gary Herbert. In May, he announced his running mate would be Republican State Representative Sheryl Allen. Despite their eventual defeat in the 2010 Election, they were the first "bipartisan" gubernatorial ticket in Utah history.
