Although the north face of the Col d’Izoard may not have had quite as much of the Tour de France limelight as its southern ascent, don’t let that little piece of trivia misguide your judgement towards this mythical mountain that stands centre stage of the Route des Grandes Alpes (Great Alpine Road) stretching 684km from Lake Geneva to the shores of the Mediterranean. Starting in Briançon it’s a stern test, just shy of 20km in length and cloaked in larch wood trees almost all the way up to its 2,360 metre summit. While they offer shelter from the elements they also obscure your view and hold you in suspense right until the very end, gradually peeling back their layers to reveal the 3,320 metre Pic de Rochebrune amidst a mountain landscape beyond words. Deep breath, relax and peace. Start: Briançon Length: 19.5km Summit: 2,360m Elevation gain: 1,145m Average gradient: 5.8% Max gradient: 9% Special thanks to our partners Mavic, Cannondale, Exposure Lights, Fi’zi:k, Haute Route, La Fuga, Lezyne, Map My Tracks, Muc Off, Scicon, The Sufferfest, Torq Fitness and USE for enabling us to bring these truly spectacular mountains to life for you all. Join us as we explore the top most parts of Europe and touch down in France to follow the path of the world famous Tour de France bicycle race. World Traveler, guide, and area native Uwe Krauss will show you many gems unique to the French Alps including Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe and Col de la Bonette, the highest paved road in the Alps. The tour visits the medieval fortress of Briançon, which also happens to be the city with the highest altitude in the European Union (4,350 feet). The route isn’t limited to France, however, as it follows the Alps through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. At the Swiss-Italian border the trip makes another memorable stop at one of Europe’s highest and most iconic peaks, the Matterhorn. The mountain’s steep pyramid-like sides face each of the four compass points as glaciers cling to its base making for an unforgettable alpine scene. Other highlights of the trip are the lavender fields of Provence and the Verdon Gorges. The gorges, created by the Verdon River, reach nearly 2,300 feet in depth and offer some of the most beautiful views in France.
Three day scenic drive in October 2012 from Lyon to Marseilles via Briancon and Nice. The route used many secondary and scenic roads through the alps and along the coast. The route was devised using Google Maps and other mapping software and downloaded on to a Garmin Extrex 20 GPS using an OSM map. 10 seconds of video were taken every 25km regardless of the scenery, weather or time of day. Great trip! Route maps are available at: https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B8OZsqleu3WyNlhFU3JtZ2M4S00/edit

Entry from: La Grave, France Entry Title: "Aux Alpes Francais" Entry: "Not surprisingly, a recent trip to the French Alps has totally reinvigorated and inspired me. It's amazing what nature can do for the soul, for the spirit. Four days in the Alps and I am a new woman. Bonnie used to work in a little town called Hope in Alaska. She was there for four summers in a row and made wonderful friends, some of whom I came to know as well. One of those friends is Jay, an American guy originally from Iowa, now living in Sunrise, Alaska who owns a white water rafting company and spends his winters skiing 7 days a week. For the last 20 years Jay has been coming to the tiny town of La Grave in the French Alps to ski its world-class mountains. This place draws serious skiers. I mean S-E-R-I-O-U-S skiers. These mountains aren't for beginners folks! But that didn't stop us of course... As lucky chance has it Jay's visit to France coincided with Bonnie's and we planned a visit to the small town in the high Alps to do some skiing ourselves. As an added bonus, two other friends of Bonnie's happened to be visiting Jay at the same time that we were so we were 5 in the tiny one-bedroom apartment in La Grave. But we were a hell of a group! Dave and Lana are also fellow Alaskans and die-hard skiers. They're married and I don't know that I've seen many couples who are as good together as these two are. It's sick. Anyway, I digress... Getting to La Grave from Montpellier involves a series of bus and train rides which take you through some beautiful country. I have to admit that as the last bus took us into the town itself, winding around sharp turns in the high Alps I couldn't stop thinking...."What the hell have I gotten myself into? I'm going to attempt to ski in these mountains???" Let me point out that I am NOT a skier. I had only been once in my life, in Colorado about nine years ago and the little resort we went to back then was cake-meal compared to these massive peaks. I soon realized why a Welsh friend of mine asked me a few weeks ago, "The Alps? Have you skied before, Graciela?" when I told him where I was headed for the second ski experience of my life... Anyway, first night was easy enough. Arrived at Jay's apartment right on time and they were waiting to take us to a wonderful Indian dinner just 10 steps from our front door. Our first night in La Grave was spent feasting on wonderful Indian food, French red wine, and a local liquor called Génépi that feels like paint thinner running down the esophagus as it goes down. It was everywhere and no one takes non for an answer so you will likely find yourself imbibing lots of Génépi in the French Alps. At least it serves to warm your internal organs... Since Jay has been going to La Grave for more than 20 years he knows the locals well and has all kinds of connections. Bonnie and I each had all the gear we needed...for free. It was awesome. Got up on Tuesday morning, had breakfast and then headed over to Chazlet, the "beginner" resort. Jay was kind enough to give up one of his priceless skiing days to come over with us and give me a lesson, help get us going. Thank God for his help. Chazlet was a great place for me to start out. Still a lot bigger and more intimidating than anything I saw in Colorado but doable I guess. It was very painful in the beginning. I think both Jay and Bonnie thought I was a lost cause. It took me 30 minutes and 30 falls to make it to the first lift! In my defense, the stupid catwalk to get to this lift is treacherous! It's a steep, narrow, ice-packed slope. I hadn't worn skis in 9 years and ..." Read and see more at: http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/gracielastanley/5/1236976500/tpod.html Photos from this trip: 1. The blizzard, named Storm Andrea by meterologists, has forced the closure of main roads and three railway lines, including a major route connecting the country to Switzerland, in the regions of Tyrol and Foralberg. The storm is also increasing the chances of avalanches in a region renowned for its ski slopes. Charlie Angela reports.

Briançon (Latin: Brigantium) a commune in the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department.
At an altitude of 1,326 metres it is the highest city in the European Union, based on the French definition as a community containing more than 2,000 inhabitants. Briançon's most recent population estimate is 11,645.
Briançon is built on a plateau nucleated around the confluence of the Durance and the Guisane rivers.
Briançon was the Brigantium of the Romans and formed part of the kingdom of King Cottius. Brigantium was marked as the first place in Gallia after Alpis Cottia (Mont Genèvre). At Brigantium the road branched, to the west through Grenoble to Vienna (modern Vienne), on the Rhone; to the south through Ebrodunum (modern Embrun), to Vapincum (modern Gap). Both the Antonine Itinerary and the Table give the route from Brigantium to Vapincum. The Table places Brigantium 6 M.P. from Alpis Cottia. Strabo mentions the village Brigantium, and on a road to Alpis Cottia, but his words are obscure. Ptolemy mentions Brigantium as within the limits of the Segusini, or people of Segusio (modern Susa), in Piedmont; but it seems, as D'Anville observes, to be beyond the natural limits of the Segusini. Walckenaer (vol. i. p. 540) justifies Ptolemy in this matter by supposing that he follows a description of Italy made before the new divisions of Augustus, which we know from Pliny. Walckenaer also supports his justification of Ptolemy by the Jerusalem Itinerary, which makes the Alpes Cottiae commence at Rama (near modern La Roche-de-Rame) between Embrun and Briançon.
I used to think that you were real clean, until I saw you in a magazine.
I always used to think that you were quite nice, but now I see that sex is your vice.
Penthouse, Mayfair, they're your scene, Porno, Porno, Porno queen.
Your new life is so obscene, Porno, Porno, Porno Queen.
Turn the pages, see your face, only dressed in see-through lace.

Quando te vejo na TV
Tomando Coca Diet e comendo bolachinha
Entro na tela com você
E fico imaginando cenas de pornografia
A boemia é meu mal
E a minha estrada é dura
Vivo encerrada nesse inferno
