'Mamma Mia!' is more than just an Abba showcase

It may be written to showcase the music by one of pop music’s most iconic bands, but ‘Mamma Mia!’ is more than just a showcase of Abba songs.
“It is many things: a musical, a great love story and has a bit of a mystery as well,” said resident director Nick Evans.
For one thing, there is no mention of Abba at all in the script.
Instead, ‘Mamma Mia!’ tells the story of a young woman Sophie, raised on a Greek island by her mother Donna, and never knowing the identity of her father – until she finds a diary that suggests three possible fathers.
So she invites them all to her wedding without telling her mother or fiance. And as they all (including Donna's two best friends, Tanya and Rosie) gather on the island, the fun begins.
Written by founding Abba members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, with a story by Catherine Johnson, the production is a musical romp through the Swedish pop quartet's chart-topping playlist.
It opened in London in 1999 and in 2000 in San Francisco, before eventually moving to Broadway in 2001.
Seen by about 55 million people in 14 languages, the show returns to Singapore for a limited run at the Marina Bay Sands’ MasterCard Theatres. The show last played here in 2005.
With a stellar cast and crew of more than 60 people from London, ‘Mamma Mia!’ features 28 Abba hits including ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘I Have a Dream’, ‘The Winner Takes It All’, ‘Voulez Vous’ and ‘Super Trouper’.
