When you’re in Ayutthaya, one thing you don’t want to miss is Ayutthaya freshwater prawns (shrimp). Here’s the article (but more details in another article coming soon): http://migrationology.com/2014/09/freshwater-prawns-ayutthaya-thailand/ Ayutthaya, the ancient Thai capital, and located about 1 - 1.5 hours drive from central Bangkok, is extremely famous throughout Thailand for its freshwater prawns. Thais that visit Ayutthaya come to visit the temples, but many would not miss the opportunity for a prawns feast. On my latest trip to Ayutthaya, Ying and I ate at a restaurant known as Ruay Goong Pao (ร้านรวยกุ้งเผา). Although it was located a bit out of the city, it was definitely worth the trip to get there - and if you love prawns / shrimp, you’re going to love this restaurant. The restaurant is located along the slow moving river, so the atmosphere for chowing down couldn’t be better either. There’s a dining room located in the house on the shore, but we chose to sit on the floating dining room, located in the river. The scenery was great, and the relaxing atmosphere was perfect for freshwater prawns feasting. For our trophy dish, we ordered the Goong Pao (กุ้งเผา), or roasted prawns. You could either choose, 3, 4, or 5 prawns for 1 kilo, and we chose to go for the biggest ones, just 3 prawns for 1 kilo - so these guys were monsters! All they did was slice them in half, and grill them on the shell side down until they were perfectly cooked. They were insanely delicious, some of the most amazing tasting things I’ve ever had in my life. The meat of the freshwater prawns was sweet and firm, and the yellow orange colored head oil was rich and creamy - the combination was outstanding. In addition to our platter of goong pao (กุ้งเผา), we also ordered a plate of kam goong pad cha (ก้ามกุ้งผัดฉ่า). Since these freshwater prawns were so jumbo big, they had equally huge tentacles (or maybe they are claws). So after the shrimp were roasted, the claws were then deshelled, and the meat from them was stir fried up with fingerroot, onions, garlic, and green peppercorns. It was an equally amazing tasting dish. For vegetables, Ying and I ordered Pad sai bua nam man hoy (ผัดสายบัวน้ำมันหอย), lotus flower stems that were just stir fried up nicely with garlic and oyster sauce. It was delicious as always, and made a nice accompanying dish to our roasted jumbo freshwater prawns. Ayutthaya is famous throughout Thailand (and for visitors), for its temples and its history, and while that is great to see too, when you’re in Ayutthaya, you should not miss the opportunity to have an insanely delicious freshwater prawns (กุ้งเผา) feast! Massaman curry is one of the most well known Thai dishes… but it’s not often my favorite dish… but then Grandma made it for me: http://migrationology.com/2014/09/grandmas-massaman-curry-ayutthaya/ So like I mentioned, Thai massaman curry is usually not my favorite dish in Thailand - mainly because it’s usually prepared quite sweet, and it’s also usually quite oily. However, it is one of the most famous dishes in Thailand, and a food that many people love - in fact - a few years back, CNN.com named it as one of the best Thai dishes, or foods, in the entire world! But anyways, Ying and I were in Ayutthaya filming for the Thai food TV documentary, and one day we went over to Grandma’s house (it was the house of a Grandma of a friend of someone on our TV filming crew) - so it was really cool to be able to film, and eat, at a local home. Ayutthaya is not just a city, but it’s a province in Thailand, so we weren’t right in Ayutthaya town, but were about 30 km outside of the town in a smaller town known as Ban Phaen (บ้านแพน). As soon as we arrived, and I saw the view of the home overlooking the calm water, I was excited. Our first step was to go to Ban Phaen Market (ตลาดบ้านแพน), which was just about a 10 minute walk from the house. I went along with Grandma’s daughter to the market to find all the ingredients we needed to make an authentic recipes for Thai massaman curry. Grandma, formerly sold massaman curry and other curries at the market in Ayutthaya, but she hadn’t sold in many years. She knew many original and authentic Ayutthaya recipes, included one for massaman chicken. After buying all the ingredients and spices we needed for the chicken massaman curry recipe, we then headed back home and started cooking. The first step was to prepare the curry paste (เครื่องแกงมัสมั่น) - which included chopping and roasted a bunch of different spices and herbs like shallots, garlic, galangal, dry chili, kaffir lime peel, and fingerroot (among many more things which you’ll see in the video). Then we used those roasted ingredients to pound a beautiful massaman curry paste. Next, we boiled chicken with peanuts and simmered it on low heat. In the meantime, we took the massaman curry paste and cooked it along with thick coconut cream until it turned into a beautiful, almost gravy like, sauce. We then added the coconut paste mixture to the chicken, threw in a bunch more spices like Siam cardamom and bay leaves, and simmered the massaman curry (แกงมัสมั่นไก่). Here’s something I didn’t know (and the reason there was already a full post of massaman chicken curry cooked and ready when we arrived in the morning): massaman is better the next day, and it should be cooked one day, left to set, and eaten the next day. So in order to film and eat all in one day, Grandma had cooked a pot the previous day, so we could eat it the same day. On this day, not only did I have an amazing time and a local Thai cultural experience, but I definitely gained a new appreciation for Thai massaman curry. It’s a complex dish, one that’s often shortcutted these days, but if made correctly can be very delicious. Massaman curry (แกงมัสมั่นไก่) is a blend of cultures, a fusion of Thai ingredients and Persian / Middle Eastern spices, all blended together in a harmony. Grandma made an authentic, no-shortcuts, recipe for massaman curry, an original Ayutthaya dish. It was so much better than just about every other massaman dish I had ever had previously - you just can hardly find the home-cooked quality at any restaurant as you would find at Grandma’s house. It was a wonderful day, a great cultural experience, and marvelous food! Thank you for watching this vlog, hope you enjoyed it. This travel video showcases the top 12 temples worth visiting in Southeast Asia including Buddhist temples, Taoist temples and Hindu temples just to name a few. Whether you're visiting Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar (Burma), Singapore or Brunei you'll see some magnificent temples. The following is a list of the best 12 temples we highly recommend you visit in SE Asia while traveling: 1) Angkor Wat Temple Angkor Wat temple is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia and is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu built by a Cambodian King who helped unify the country and to also spread the Khmer influence across Southeast Asia. 2) Wat Arun Temple Wat Arun temple is located in Bangkok, Thailand. This is the Temple of Dawn located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya river. 3) Banteay Srei Temple Banteay Srei is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This happens to be a Hindu temple and it is dedicated to the God Shiva. Most of the temples of Angkor were commissioned by powerful Kings but this temple in particular was not. It was commissioned by a Brahman, which makes it quite unique. There are many temples to choose from but this one in particular Banteay Srei is considered to be the crown jewel of Angkorian art because it has some of the most exquisite and intricate carvings. 4) Kek Lok Si Temple Kek Lok Si is located in Air Itam (George Town) Penang, Malaysia. Kek Lok Si temple, also known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss, is the biggest Buddhist temple in all of Southeast Asia. The temple complex combines Mahayana Buddhism and Chinese rituals. For anyone who would like to come you can take the bus 201, 203 and 204 from the Komplex Komptar - basically the main mall from George Town and it is about a 40 minute ride to here. 5) Batu Caves Temple The Batu Caves are located 13 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As an important Hindu shrine the Batu Caves takes its name from the Batu River and is dedicated to Lord Murugan. To get to the top you'll have to climb two hundred and seventy two steps. You'll notice lots of macaques or little monkeys. 6) Preah Khan Temple Preah Khan is located in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia as part of the Temples of Angkor. The temple means 'sacred sword' and this temple is believed to have been a University that housed over a 1000 teachers. It has that kind of eerie feeling to it similar to Ta Prohm but without all of the crowds. You can be walking through and you feel like you're going through a maze. It is really quite fascinating. People who have come to this temple have picked up some rocks and stacked them into a little formation and I do believe this has a special meaning in Buddhism. 7) Golden Mount Temple Golden Mount Temple is located in Bangkok, Thailand. You can find yourself having some of the best views of Bangkok from up here. It is normally not crowded; however, on a special Buddhist holiday it is packed with people - especially local Thais. 8) Doi Suthep Temple Doi Suthep Temple is located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Located on top of a mountain it is best reached by taking a red songthaew where you can have the best view of Chiang Mai on a clear day. 9) Angkor Thom Temple (Bayon) Bayon, also known as Angkor Thom Temple is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia an is part of the Temples of Angkor. The most fascinating thing about Bayon are the cold faces that have a hint of a smile. This massive complex has 54 towers with 216 faces on them. You can also visit the Terrace of the Elephants which is 350 meters long. 10) Cave Pagoda Temple Cave Pagoda is located in Vietnam along the Mekong Delta nearby the Vietnamese - Cambodian border in the far south near Chao Doc. To reach the summit you need to climb 400 steps and chances are you'll be sweating profusely. This temple has beautiful views. It is just rice fields as far as you can see. 11) Ta Prohm Temple Ta Prohm Temple is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia in the Angkor region. Ta Prohm is a Buddhist temple where the jungle just dominates the architecture. Indiana Jones would feel right at home here at this temple. In fact, it was used for the set of Tomb Raider staring Angelina Joli. It is decaying and it is crumbling but it is a great place to explore. This is an example of nature taking over the temple. 12) Temples to visit in Southeast Asia Transcript Playlist: This is part of our Travel in Southeast Asia series. noodls 2014-11-24The Botan River (Turkish: Botan Çayı, Botan Suyu aka Uluçay) is a tributary of the Tigris River in Siirt Province of southeastern Turkey.
It originates in the high mountains west of the Nordüz Plateau, which form the border of Siirt Province to Hakkari and Van, and flows eastwards before it turns to the northwest. The river has shaped a canyon on its way. The altitude difference between the valley and the top of the mountains reaches about 1,000 m (3,300 ft).
The rivers Çatak and Büyükdere join it at Çukurca in Hakkari Province, after which it is named Botan Suyu (Uluçay). Running westwards by east of Aydınlar and Siirt, it reaches Bostancık locality. Here, the rivers Zorava and Bitlis join the Botan. Finally at Çattepe in Siirt Province, it joins the Tigris River, after which the Tigris sharply turns southwards.
The discharge of Botan River from spring to mid-summer averages about 100–300 m³/s (3,500–11,000 cu ft/s), while it reaches in April and June about 400–600 m³/s (14,000–21,000 cu ft/s, and in May it peaks at about 700–1,000 m³/s (25,000–35,000 cu ft/s and sometimes more. At this time, it looks much bigger than the Tigris River. At the end of summer or in the fall, its depth is not less than 1 metre (3.3 ft), and its outflow not less than around 60–80 m³/s (2,100–2,800 cu ft/s).
