Stargate SG-1 (often abbreviated as SG-1) is a Canadian-American adventure and military science fiction television series and part of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Stargate franchise. The show, created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, is based on the 1994 feature film Stargate by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. The television series was filmed in and around the city of Vancouver, Canada. In the United States, Showtime broadcast the first five seasons, from 1997 to 2002, and then the series moved to the Sci Fi Channel for its last five seasons, from 2002 to 2007. The final episode premiered on Sky1 in the United Kingdom on March 13, 2007, three months before its United States premiere. With ten seasons and 214 episodes, Stargate SG-1 surpassed The X-Files in 2007 as the longest-running North American science fiction series on television, before being surpassed by Smallville in 2011 with 218 episodes in ten seasons.
Amanda Tapping (born August 28, 1965 in Rochford, Essex) is an English-born Canadian actress, producer and director. She is best known for portraying Samantha Carter in the Canadian-American military science fiction television series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. She currently stars as Helen Magnus in the Syfy Channel series Sanctuary.
Born in Rochford, Essex, England, she moved with her family to Ontario, Canada when she was three years old. She attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute where she excelled in environmental science and drama. However, when she finished in 1984, she decided to focus her attention on drama, attending the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Arts in Windsor, Ontario.
As of 2004, Tapping lives with her husband, Alan Kovacs, in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has one daughter, Olivia, born on 22 March 2005. Tapping has two living brothers, Richard and Christopher. Chris is her fraternal twin, who works in Toronto as a database administrator. A third brother, Steven, died in December 2006.
Lieutenant General Jonathan J. "Jack" O'Neill, USAF is a fictional character in the Canadian-American military science fiction television series Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, three science fiction shows about military teams exploring the universe via a network of alien transportation devices. Played by American actor Richard Dean Anderson, O'Neill was a main character in the first eight seasons of Stargate SG-1 (1997–2005). O'Neill had a recurring role in Stargate Atlantis for the first three seasons (2004–2007), and he also appeared in the 2008 direct-to-DVD SG-1 film Stargate: Continuum as a minor character. Anderson reduced his character's status in season six to spend more time with his family, eventually leaving the show after season eight, thereby removing himself from the status of main character.
Colonel Jack O'Neill (spelled Jack O'Neil in the film, and given as John O'Neill in one case, and John J. O'Neill in another) makes his first appearance, played by actor Kurt Russell, in the 1994 military science fiction film Stargate, written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. Colonel O'Neill has extensive experience in special operations, and he led the first team through the Stargate on a reconnaissance mission. After the creation of Stargate Command (SGC) in "Children of the Gods", the pilot episode of Stargate SG-1, he is given command of the primary SG team, SG-1, which consists of Daniel Jackson, Teal'c and Samantha "Sam" Carter. Promoted to brigadier general in season 8, O'Neill is chosen as the Commanding Officer of Stargate Command after George Hammond's promotion to the Department of Homeworld Security. At the start of season 9, O'Neill is again promoted, this time to the head of Homeworld Security, so that Richard Dean Anderson could leave the show to spend time with his family. Colonel O'Neill appears in most episodes of the first eight seasons of Stargate SG-1; however, he only appears in 4 episodes of season 9 and 10.
Joseph Mallozzi (born October 16, 1965 in Montreal, Canada) is a Canadian writer and producer.
He is most noted for his contributions to the Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe television series. He joined the Stargate production team at the start of Stargate SG-1's fourth season in 2000. Since then he has been a writer and executive producer for all three series. He made a cameo appearance in the Stargate SG-1 fifth season episode "Wormhole X-Treme!" (the 100th episode of the series), in which he played a crew member lamenting the absence of doughnuts on the craft service table.
On television, he worked as a writer for Animal Crackers, The Little Lulu Show, Flying Rhino Junior High, Papa Beaver's Storytime, The Babaloos, Night Hood, The Lost World, Lassie, Turtle Island, Rotten Ralph, Marsupilami, Robinson Sucroe, Billy and Buddy, Caillou, Wimzie's House, Ivanhoe, Flight Squad, Mumble Bumble, Patrol 03, Largo Winch, The Busy World of Richard Scarry, The Baskervilles, The Adventures of Paddington Bear, George and Martha, The Wombles, Mona the Vampire, Sci-Squad, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Ripley's Believe It or Not!, X-DuckX, Space Cases, The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo, Chris Cross, Student Bodies, The Smoggies, Zombie Hotel, Jim Button, Iron Nose, Albert - the 5th Musketeer, Bizby, Birdz, The Twins, Arthur, Young Robin Hood, Chip and Charlie, Inuk, A Bunch of Munsch, A Miss Mallard Mystery, Dr. Xargle, Emily of New Moon, Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings, Wunschpunsch, Upstairs, Downstairs Bears, Big Wolf on Campus, The Country Mouse and the City Mouse Adventures, Cat Tales, The Intrepids, Creepschool, Treasure and The Legend of White Fang.
Michael Garrett Shanks (born December 15, 1970) is a Canadian actor who achieved international fame for his role as Dr. Daniel Jackson in the long-running Canadian-American military science fiction television series Stargate SG-1.
Shanks grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia. After graduating from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre in 1994, he appeared in several stage productions, serving a two-year apprenticeship with the prestigious Stratford Festival in Ontario. He made guest appearances on TV series like Highlander, University Hospital, and The Outer Limits, appeared in the TV movie A Family Divided and had a small role in The Call of the Wild, before winning the role of Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1.
Shanks played archaeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson throughout the first five seasons of Stargate SG-1 before leaving the show, citing creative differences concerning the under-use of his character and the direction of the show as a whole. He made several guest appearances throughout the sixth season playing his own character, as well as voicing the Asgard character Thor. Shanks returned for the seventh and subsequent seasons, winning the Leo Award for Best Lead Performance By A Male in a Dramatic Series in 2004 for the seventh season episode "Lifeboat". During the series' tenth and final season, he signed up for 16 of the 20 episodes, taking some time off in March 2006 for the birth of his third child (second with wife and occasional co-star Lexa Doig).
