Baron Peter Piot, MD, PhD FRCP (born 1949 in Leuven, Belgium) is a former Under Secretary-General of the United Nations, former Executive Director of the UN specialized agency UNAIDS, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a professor at Imperial College London. In 2004, he was awarded the Vlerick Award.

After he qualified as a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Ghent (Belgium) in 1974, he co-discovered the Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976. In 1980 Peter Piot received a PhD degree in Microbiology from the University of Antwerp (Belgium). He was also a Senior Fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle.

In the 1980s, Dr. Piot participated in a series of collaborative projects in Burundi, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Tanzania and Zaire. Project SIDA in Kinshasa, Zaire was the first international project on AIDS in Africa and is widely acknowledged as having provided the foundations of our understanding of HIV infection in Africa. He was a professor of microbiology, and of public health at the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine, in Antwerp, and the Universities of Nairobi, Brussels, and Lausanne.

James Chau (Chinese: 周柳建成 Zhōuliú Jiànchéng^{[citation needed]}) (born 11 December 1977)) is a journalist, television presenter, and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. He anchors the main evening news on China Central Television, which broadcasts from Beijing to more than 80 countries, and reports live on location worldwide. As a correspondent, he has covered breaking news on the Asian Tsunami and global SARS outbreak, and has interviewed world figures: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,Nobel Laureate Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, and King Constantine II. He is one of the few journalists to have interviewed Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. In 2009, he was appointed by the United Nations as China's first UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador.

Chau was born in England and educated at City of London School and Cambridge University, where he was Varsity News Features Editor. He also studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music under Professor Graeme Humphrey. In interviews, he has cited the photographer Lord Snowdon for encouraging him as a writer, and guiding him to his first journalistic internship at Vogue. His parents were born in Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Jean Mayer (February 19, 1920 – January 1, 1993) was a renowned French-American nutritionist and the tenth president of Tufts University from 1976 to 1992. During his lifetime, Mayer was known as a leading expert and activist on hunger issues.

Mayer was born in Paris the son of French physiologists Jeanne Eugenie Mayer and Andre Mayer, himself notable for being one of the founding members of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. After obtaining bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Paris, Jean Mayer served as an officer in the French Army during World War II, receiving fourteen military decorations for his heroism. After being captured by the German Army, Mayer escaped from prison and used forged papers to get into the United States.

After the war, Mayer earned doctorates from Yale University and the Sorbonne, while serving as a Food and Agriculture Organization nutrition officer in Washington, DC. Upon completion of his doctoral work, Mayer became a member of the Department of Nutrition of the Harvard School of Public Health, where he taught for 26 years. In 1976, he was appointed the tenth president of Tufts University in Massachusetts, where he proceeded to establish the first graduate school of nutrition in the United States. Shortly after being appointed Chancellor of the University, Mayer died of a heart attack at age 72.
